Forest Bathing—also known as Nature Therapy—is an immersive experience in nature that gives participants an opportunity to reset their outlook on life and have an encounter with nature in a way that they have never-before experienced. It is a sensory practice away from phones, computers, and social media and back to what the body yearns for—a connection with nature, a sense of peace, a sense of relaxation, and a sense of being in the present moment. It provides the perfect time to become a human “be-ing” instead of a human “do-ing”. During a Forest Bathing experience, attendees will be invited to slow down and reconnect with nature’s perfect balance using their senses to see the sunlight playing through the leaves, smell the flowers, and feel and hear the gentle wind whispering to return to one’s native roots and discover a deeper self. The nature encounter concludes with a tea ceremony to connect with other like-minded nature lovers. May 11 is World Bonsai Day. Celebrate by attending this fantastic presentation where participants will walk away not only with a wealth of knowledge about bonsai, but also with a lot of inspiration. Questions to be answered include:

· How did bonsai come about, and what do they signify?
· How do you style a bonsai?
· What’s special about bonsai pots?
· What’s the best way to kill a bonsai?
Along with a stunning photo presentation, there will be a live demonstration of how to transform a nursery tree into a beginning bonsai. Visitors will learn how to remove organic potting soil, selectively prune the roots and branches, and finally replant it in bonsai soil in a classic-style pot. Mount Botanical Garden is pleased to offer a special hands-on Ikebana class with Sensei Stephan Eberhagan, who will teach the guidelines and the spiritual meaning of these extraordinary arrangements and will allow participants to discover their own creativity in the process. Spaces are limited, please sign up for one session only. Flowers and greens will be provided. Students will need a Suiban and Kenzan to participate in class. Attendees can order the complete kit, consisting of one 13-inch Suiban, a 3.3-inch Kenzan, and a pair of stainless steel floral shears. The kit will be waiting the day of the class. OR people can purchase each item separately on their own to bring to class. The required dimensions: one flat container (Suiban) 8-10 inch diameter and 2-3 inch height; flower pin holder (Kenzan) with at least 3-inch diameter. Ikebana flower scissors (Hasami) are recommended, but optional – as scissors will be provided for use in class.

ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN EXHIBIT
The monumental ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN exhibit now on display at Mounts Botanical features 20 larger-than-life sculptures merging art and nature. From traditional soaring cranes and gliding planes, to galloping ponies, emerging butterflies, and even boats, artist Kevin Box takes origami to another level, transforming traditional Japanese topics into museum-quality metal sculptures. Created by Santa Fe artists Jennifer and Kevin Box, the exhibit features Kevin Box’s own compositions, as well as collaborations with world-renowned origami artists Robert J. Lang, Te Jui Fu, Beth Johnson and Michael G. LaFosse.

West Palm Beach (April 11, 2024)— As the opioid crisis continues to affect communities nationwide, Hanley Foundation is taking steps to raise awareness and save lives in Palm Beach County and beyond. On May 7, National Fentanyl Awareness Day, the community is invited to join the Hanley team and help prepare Narcan kits that will be distributed throughout the county. The event will take place from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Hanley Resource Center, 933 45th Street, West Palm Beach.
Fentanyl is a significant contributor to the opioid epidemic, causing more than 70,000 Americans to overdose in 2023. Narcan, also known by its generic name naloxone, is used to rapidly reverse opioid overdose. By equipping individuals with these kits, Hanley aims to empower people to offer assistance in overdose situations and potentially save lives.
“National Fentanyl Awareness Day is the perfect time to shed light on this urgent public health crisis and take tangible steps toward saving lives,” said Dr. Rachel Docekal, CEO, Hanley Foundation. “We’re honored to partner with our Palm Beach County neighbors on this critical initiative.”
The goal is to prepare 300 kits for distribution throughout the county. The event also includes Narcan training sessions, and a complimentary light lunch. Additional information can be found HERE.

The Conrad-Sunrise Chapter of the American Hibiscus Society – Hibiscus Show & Sale

ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN EXHIBIT
The monumental ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN exhibit now on display at Mounts Botanical features 20 larger-than-life sculptures merging art and nature. From traditional soaring cranes and gliding planes, to galloping ponies, emerging butterflies, and even boats, artist Kevin Box takes origami to another level, transforming traditional Japanese topics into museum-quality metal sculptures. Created by Santa Fe artists Jennifer and Kevin Box, the exhibit features Kevin Box’s own compositions, as well as collaborations with world-renowned origami artists Robert J. Lang, Te Jui Fu, Beth Johnson and Michael G. LaFosse.

Offering Drug and Alcohol Literacy and Prevention Programming in honor of National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week
West Palm Beach FL (April X, 2024)—Hanley Foundation and Glades Middle School collaborated for the third year in a row for the annual Youth Summit, which was recently held at the school’s Miramar, FL campus. In honor of National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week (March 18 through March 24), 18 Hanley Foundation staff members provided age-appropriate programming and tools to educate 630 Glades Middle School students about this critical topic.
Two key programs shared at the Youth Summit include Hanley Foundation’s Alcohol Literacy Challenge (ALC) and Marijuana and Vaping Prevention (MVP). The Alcohol Literacy Challenge provides students with facts about the physical effects of alcohol, and knowledge and awareness about alcohol-related health issues, in an effort to reduce underage drinking, promote responsible drinking behaviors as adults, and reduce abuse and misuse of alcohol. The Marijuana and Vaping Prevention program functions similarly, to illustrate the harms of marijuana and e-cigarettes, to correct misconceptions, and to promote healthy behaviors in youth.
Hanley Foundation staff also hosted mindfulness and Zumba sessions to teach and encourage positive ways to deal with stress.
Hanley staff presented some interesting facts to the students during the sessions, such as:
· Alcohol is the most commonly used substance among Florida youth. However, from 2012 to 2023, past 30-day alcohol use among Florida middle and high school students declined from 24.6% to 11.0%.
· Approximately 1 in 10 people who use marijuana will become addicted. When they start before age 18, the rate of addiction rises to 1 in 6. However, from 2014 to 2023, past 30-day marijuana use for Florida youth decreased from 12.4% to 7.4%.
“We believe that with continued outreach programs like this one, we can continue to reduce these percentages and keep our children on a positive path, free of addiction,” said Diamond Howard, Hanley Foundation’s Corporate Director of Prevention.

If you’ve been “around Wellington” for a while, you know very well that the winter months are also the equestrian months. You have easy access to all the great equestrian events including polo, dressage and the Winter Equestrian Festival (hunter/jumper competitions). But when do you ever get a window into the real world of those who live the equestrian lifestyle and bring these beautiful horses to us to enjoy? Fortunately, the Wellington Garden Club presented a private tour of five of the most lovely equestrian farms on Saturday, April 6th.
The full day tour began at 10am at Village Hall in Wellington, where we were greeted by friendly members of the Wellington Garden Club, handing out tour booklets and pink wristbands. Tour goers were allowed to visit the five equestrian farms in any order they wished.
Santa Rita Polo Farm
So, we (my photographer Monica and I) began with the Santa Rita Polo Farm, owned by Melissa Ganzi, a polo player herself. There was a polo game going on at one of the four polo fields on the property, which we caught the tail end of. We were given access to a golf cart to explore the property on our own. The beautiful, modern looking barns were covered in bright pink and purple Bougainvillea. We enjoyed walking through the barns, seeing the many polo ponies and seeing some of them during their tail braiding session. We also strolled by the bright pink sign “Polo is beautiful” amidst the stables.
Mida Farms
Our second stop was nearby at Mida Farms, home of 17 champion Clydesdales, other horses, sheep and donkeys, owned by Victoria McCullough. The entrance of the property leads to a gorgeous stone mansion, covered in ivy, and includes a grand prix field. We were in luck – Victoria was on hand to answer questions and even to open up refreshments for all of her visitors. Victoria was happy to answer questions and guide us to the “cookies,” so that we could give her Clydesdales a snack. Beautiful, gentle horses with an unending appetite. Chandeliers hanging from the stable ceilings. A wonderful experience.
Eagle Tree Farm
The next stop was Eagle Tree Farm, which included a large, covered arena for practicing dressage and a dressage barn, owned by Lourdes Fernandez Miranda. The dressage arena includes a mirrored wall, so the rider and horse can see themselves as they practice their “dance” routines. We had the luck of watching someone practice during our visit. United States Dressage Olympian Robert Dover is the trainer here and the barn space is rented out to many dressage riders.
Helgstrand Farm
Next up on our tour was Helgstrand Dressage USA, covering more than 45 acres of beautiful fields and gardens. The property includes a large, covered arena, a grand prix grass field and an all-weather ring. Managed by Olympic Dressage champion Lars Peterson, the farm includes dressage horses as well as show jumpers.
River Run Farm
Our last, but not least stop was River Run Farm, owned by Phoebe Wesley, who was on hand to give group tours. Phoebe has won many championships, including amateur hunters and hunter derbies. Phoebe showed us how the stables were wider and more comfortable for the horses because they were built in the 80’s when wider stables was the norm. She also stopped by a groomer, who was giving an acupuncture-type treatment to one of the horses. She explained that her horses are given many treatments like this, including showing us a machine that the horses stand on and receive vibrations from the ground up. Phoebe also explained that they intentionally built several areas within the farm with different kinds of surfaces for the horses to walk on, and that the variety is good for them. These are some of the best hunters in Florida, and she spares no expense in caring for them. Meanwhile, the beautiful farm included many native plants and a small koi pond.
Our tour concluded right around 4pm, as planned. Monica and I realized we were both exhausted -in a good way – from the great day, including the walking around and the bright sun. I also really enjoyed the in-between moments, when we saw the many other equestrian farms, in between our official stops. As the winter equestrian capital in the world, Wellington is rich in equestrian culture. This beautiful tour, presented by the Wellington Garden Club, is really the best way to get an inside peak into that world.
