March, 2013 – SPRING CLEANING

YOUR CLOSET’S NOT THE ONLY THING THAT NEEDS

SPRING CLEANING

Looking to make Palm Beach County a cleaner, greener, more livable place? Local non-profit, Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful, Inc. and the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County encourage you to get involved in the 2013 Great American Cleanup™, a national campaign organized by nonprofit Keep America Beautiful.

In what continues to be the nation’s largest grassroots community improvement program, Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful’s volunteers will clean up litter and debris from public spaces, neighborhoods, roadways, waterways, parks, and schools.  Additional community improvement activities include tree and landscape plantings, and other beautification projects. Moreover, the Great American Cleanup is a significant opportunity for local organizations to coordinate activities that encourage civic engagement and action.

The Great American Cleanup will take place in Palm Beach County officially on Saturday, April 13, with additional dates. Volunteers can visit the Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful website at www.keepPBCbeautiful.org for further details and sites or call (561) 686-6646 for more information. Volunteers are encouraged to pre-register by contacting the volunteer coordinator at their chosen location. All supplies will be provided and commemorative t-shirts will be given away to volunteers while supplies last. Community service hours will be given.

Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup takes place throughout the country from small, rural communities to large, urban areas, reaching its apex during the spring months. From March through May, an anticipated 1,200 KAB affiliates and partnering organizations will bring together more than 4 million volunteers to create more vibrant, beautiful, cleaner and safer towns and cities.

“Each and every day, we are singularly focused on transforming public spaces into beautiful places in communities across the country,” said Matt McKenna, KAB president and chief executive officer. “Whether the place is a neighborhood park, a river shoreline or a vacant lot, public places provide a neutral space in which people can come together, share ideas and establish meaningful relationships. When provided with the right tools and resources, we’ve found that people tend to take better care of these places, resulting in even greater community benefits.”

The national sponsors of the 2013 Great American Cleanup to date are: The Dow Chemical Company; The Glad Products Company; LG Electronics U.S.A., Inc.; Nestlé® Pure Life® Purified Water; PepsiCo’s Pepsi-Cola and Gatorade companies; Solo Cup Company; Troy-Bilt® Lawn and Garden Equipment; Waste Management, WM Recycle Service; and Wrigley.

The Wellington Chamber of Commerce Has A
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony For
Psychological Wellness Center

The Wellington Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce img_6308Psychological Wellness Center as one of its newest members.  They are located at 12008 South Shore Boulevard, Suite 207 in Wellington, Florida and the practice is co-owned by Dr. Diane Kelly and Dr. Stephanie Lippman.  In a nurturing and comfortable environment, Psychological Wellness Center’s skilled and supportive psychologists use techniques that are rooted in effective, scientifically tested methods, while keeping up with the latest advances in psychological research.

Diane Kelly was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and raised in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.  After high school, Kelly attended University of Miami where she majored in Psychology.  She then attended Nova Southeastern University where she received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.  Kelly did her internship at Oklahoma Health Consortium.  She then returned to do her post-doctoral residency with University of Miami Mailman Center for Child Development.  Kelly went on to work for the Palm Beach County Youth Affairs Division for approximately ten years.

Stephanie Lippman was born and raised in Toronto, Canada.  She received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from York University in Toronto.  She then moved to Tampa to do her graduate work.  She received her Psy.D. in clinical psychology from the Florida School of Professional Psychology and completed both her pre-doctoral internship and post-doctoral fellowship at Palm Beach County Youth Affairs Division.  While interning at the Palm Beach County Youth Affairs division, Lipppman worked with Kelly who was her supervisor.  They soon decided to start their own practice.  Lippman writes for parenting magazine and has done consulting work for television news anchor Roxanne Stein. She and Kelly recently joined the lecture team at Palm Beach Pediatrics.

Psychological Wellness Center focuses on services to everyone from individuals, families, couples and group therapy. They work with all ages.  Lippman said, “We have a number of groups that we are running.  We have an Aspergers social skills group; an ADHD group for parents to help them learn how manage their kids behaviors; a bullying group as well as an adjustment group for kids and adolescents.  We are piloting a bio-feedback program where people can come learn strategies for relaxation and anti-anxiety strategies.  We also do psychological evaluations, gifted testing, learning disabilities testing and diagnostic testing.”

The doctors stated that they are piloting a program with Wellington Regional Hospital which they hope will be up and running by April.  They will be running a group for new mothers who will come in with their babies eight weeks post-partum and talk about the challenges and successes in adjusting to life with the new baby.  There will also be a group for moms and dads to come in together and talk about the changes in their family structure after having had a new baby.

Psychological Wellness Center also runs a group called Building Blocks.  This is a one hour “mommy and me” type of class to give new parents a chance to socialize with other parents and learn ways to play with their children to help them in their development.  More importantly, qualified professionals are there to evaluate the babies’ behaviors and skills while playing and socializing with other babies in the group.  Both doctors are moms so they know the worries that may come with a new baby.  If they recognize that a child is not developing properly, they have screening tools to clearly define if there is a problem.  If there is, they will recommend things such as games the parents can play with the child to help development in the problem area.  Lippman said, “We’re moms and we know that a lot of moms have questions about whether or not their child’s development is normal.  We have qualified professionals there to give advice or to screen the babies.  It gives us an opportunity to have parents’ fears assuaged where we can say, it’s fine, this is normal.”

Describing their practice, Kelly said, “We’re both passionate about kids and families.  We’re both moms; I have a 4 year old and she has a 3 year old so it’s something that’s close to the heart.  We’re passionate about that and we’re both good at what we do.  We use all of our tools to really help people.  Our perspective is very much strength based; when you come to us we will work with you to find out what you are good at.  Once we define what that is, we define how we are going to get you down the path you need to go in a successful way.  We work real hard to help people.”

Psychological Wellness center believes that no client in need of treatment should be turned away.  They offer a number of sliding scale slots per week for clients with little means and a big need for treatment.  For information about Psychological Wellness Center call 561-207-7625.  Email to dianekelly@psywellness.com  or stephanielippman@psywellness.com.  Their website is www. psywellness.com.  For information about area business, call the Wellington Chamber of Commerce at 561.792.6525 and visit their website at www.WellingtonChamber.com.

Lake Worth Non-Profits Present

Woody Guthrie- 100 Years of Song

Sunday, March 24

2:00 PM Matinee Concert / 7:00 PM Evening Concert

Lake Worth Playhouse : Downtown Lake Worth

Woody Guthrie, dustbowl refugee and father of Arlo Guthrie, would woody2-ehave turned 100 years old this year.  Concerts in celebration of Woody, his songs and his life are being held all over the country.  On Sunday, March 24th, a troupe of Palm Beach County’s finest performers will be singing and telling his story.  Projected behind the performers will be a montage of photos reflecting his stories, as well as the words to all of the songs.  The concert will take place at the Lake Worth Playhouse. Tickets are on sale at the Playhouse, 713 Lake Avenue or through LakeWorthPlayhouse.org.  Discount prices are available with advance purchase. Full price will be charged at the door.

Woody Guthrie wrote over 3000 songs in his short life (1912-1967).  Best known for This Land is Your Land and Union Maid; his songs recorded the history of this country as it happened.  His prolific pen poured out so many songs, many are still being discovered.  From his children’s songs that are still sung to the songs of working men and women, migrant workers, the environment and the dustbowl, Woody Guthrie is as relevant today as he was in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.

Woody traveled this country from coast to coast hopping freight trains and working in the fields with Okies and migrant workers.  He performed on the radio, hobnobbed with New York intelligentsia, performed with Pete Seeger, The Almanac Singers, Leadbelly, Cisco Houston and scores of the leading performers of the era.  Bob Dylan made pilgrimages to Woody’s bedside as he lay dying, learning his craft at Woody’s feet. Rambling Jack Eliot was also among his many disciples.

The full theater production of Woody- 100 Years of Music has been scripted by Joan Friedenberg and Bill Bowen (PinkSlip).  Appearing with them on stage is narrator Charlie Birnbaum and performers Suzanne Cannon, Rick Cohen, Scott Goldblatt, Kat Mahoney, Ginny Meredith and Tracy Sands.  All have active duo and solo careers throughout the region.  This concert will see them on stage throughout the entire performance showing their vocal virtuosity  with killer harmonies, and instrumentally with guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, keyboard and flute.

Woody Guthrie, 100 Years of Song benefits four of Lake Worth’s non-profit organizations. Included are LULA (Lake Worth’s Arts District), The Downtown Cultural Alliance, Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery and the Lake Worth Playhouse.

Concert ticket holders are invited to a reception in-between Matinee and Evening Concert with the performers at the Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery.  South Shores Tavern will be offering 15% discount on meals all day with proof on concert tickets.  Posters and Concert CD’s will be available at the Lake Worth Playhouse and Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery for purchase during and after the concert.
