NRI Institute of Health Sciences Scholarship will be awarded to Wellington resident

 

The Village of Wellington is proud to join the NRI Institute of Health Sciences to announce a scholarship award of $15,000 to one Wellington resident.  The Licensed Practical Nurse program at the Royal Palm Beach campus of Nursing Resources International begins March 2013. The scholarship will cover the entire cost of the 10 ½ month training program offered by NRI. Applications for the scholarship will be available at Village Hall located at 12300 Forest Hill Blvd in Wellington or can be downloaded from the Village website at www.wellingtonfl.gov. The completed application must be at Village Hall no later than February 14, 2013 at 5:00pm. The Village Council will make the final determination of the scholarship winner. Student Artists Invited to Enter Artwork for New Display in Wellington

 

There’s a new opportunity for youthful Wellington artists to see their creations on public display! The Village is teaming up with the Wellington Art Society for the “Student Art Program,” which puts youth artwork on display at the Wellington Community Center.

 

Middle school students who either live in Wellington or attend a Wellington school are invited to deliver their original works of art to the Wellington Community Center (12150 Forest Hill Boulevard, Suite 100) on Wednesday, January 23rd between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm. All submitted artwork must be framed.  The Wellington Art Society will select the artwork for the exhibit.

 

The exhibit will open the following day on Thursday, January 24th and artwork chosen will be on display for a four-month rotation ending in May 2013.

 

Information and entry forms with program dates and guidelines are available from the Wellington Art Society (561-791-2194) as well as art teachers of Wellington’s middle schools.

(West Palm Beach, FL – December 21, 2012)  The Friends of Mounts Botanical Garden will once again be hosting “Palm Beach County’s official Arbor Day celebration” next month:

 

Florida Arbor Day – For the Love of Trees

Friday, January 18 – 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Throughout the Garden

FREE for members and Suggested Donation of $5 for non-members

For the seventh year in a row, Mounts will celebrate Florida Arbor Day. The Garden will salute trees with the planting of a native mastic tree, guided tours and a special Tree Trek for children. Vendors will be on hand selling trees suitable to south Florida yards. Youngsters will enjoy the kids’ activities and the visit from Smokey Bear, who will share tips on fire prevention. Free tree seedlings will be given to the first 100 attendees, who can also picnic in the Pavilion and obtain the latest information on how to properly select and maintain trees.

 

At the 11 a.m. tree planting ceremony, Palm Beach County Commissioner Shelley Vana will issue the official Arbor Day proclamation.  Participating in Florida Arbor Day at Mounts Botanical Garden will be the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs Inc., District X, a member of the Deep South Region and the National Garden Clubs.

 

In addition, Allen Sistrunk, Director of Mounts Botanical Garden, will introduce honoree Gloria Blake, the chairman of the NGC Deep South Region Penny Pines project and Director-elect of the Deep South Region.  The Penny Pines program of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs provides donated funds to plant trees in Osceola National and John Bethea State Forest that had more than 11,000 acres destroyed during the Okefenokee fires in 2010 and 2011.  Currently, the U.S. Forest Service is trying to reforest up to 500 acres per year to replace trees destroyed by these fires.

PALM BEACH, FL (January 10, 2013) – Jeanne Phillips, aka writer Abigail Van Buren, author of the legendary “Dear Abby” syndicated advice column will be speaking at the Annual KidSanctuary Campus Luncheon January 22, 2013.  Billed as “the most widely syndicated newspaper columnist in the world” by Universal Syndicate, the Dear Abby daily advice column feature appears in 1,400 newspapers worldwide, boasting a daily readership of more than 110 million people.

The annual luncheon will take place from 10:30 AM – 2:00 PM at legendary Club Colette in Palm Beach.  Chair Persons for the event include Hayden HosfordJan Malley and Gail Worth with Honorary Chairs Connie M. PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL. – (January 11, 2013) As a follow up tounknown-7 their successful run of cabaret shows this past Fall, the Plaza Theatre is bringing back fan favorites for another run this Winter.

Kicking off with A Tribute to Judy Garland, the Theatre will produce a fun-filled and moving tribute to one of the greatest singers of all time. Melissa Jacobson, one of South Florida’s top cabaret performers, will command the stage in this performance that runs at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 29 and Monday, February 25, and features hits like The Trolley Song, Get Happy, You Made Me Love You, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, and many more.

The Lake Worth City Tree Board, along with the City of Lake Worth, is proud to sponsor its 8th annual Festival of Trees on Saturday February 16th from 9 am to 4 pm. This is a free family event and will feature live music throughout the day and educational opportunities stressing the environmental benefits of trees and plants. Local nurseries and plant societies will sell a stunning array of plants, native trees and palms, flowering and fruit trees. 20 fruit trees will be given away to Lake Worth residents via drawing names.

 

Attendees will also have the opportunity to view the colorful nylon banners depicting native leafs and flowers which line the light poles on Dixie and Federal highways. These banners were commissioned by the Lake Worth City Tree Board and handcrafted by renowned American Artist Bill Godfrey.

 

Informational materials will be available to all and educational opportunities will be provided by the Sierra Club, Arthur R. Marshall Foundation and Energize Lake Worth to name a few.

 

This is one of Lake Worth’s most popular events.  It’s a great opportunity to green up your yard, get good quality plants at a good price, learn more about gardening, and have a good time meeting friends and listening to great live music!

January 16, 2013, WEST PALM BEACH, Florida – Be one of the first visitors to see three new babies at the Palm Beach Zoo during a special event called Super Baby Saturday.

 

Baby giant anteater, Delilah, was born on September 28. A baby Chinese muntjac was born December 19. A baby spider monkey was born December 30. The muntjac and spider monkey have yet to be named.

Super Baby Saturday on January 26 will celebrate their births, the Zoo’s success in a national effort to increase the population of vulnerable species. The event will include family-friendly activities and conservation talks. Here’s the schedule:

 

·         9:30 a.m. – Giant anteater cloth-diapering contest. Prize from Lalabye Baby.

·         10:30 a.m. – Keeper talk on giant anteaters, check out Mom and baby, Delilah.

·         11:30 a.m. – Stroller walking race. Prize from The Learning Express.

·         1:30 p.m. – Keeper talk on Mexican spider monkeys, check out Mom and baby.

·         Safe Kids Palm Beach County will be at the Zoo all morning handing out information on how to keep your children safe in the car.

The Sidekicks,” a rocking teen sibling band, will be performing at the SFL Fair on Friday, Jan 25th from 8:30-10:30pm.


Featuring Ryan Medina, who is 13 on lead vocals and guitar, Melanie Medina, 17, on bass and Jean Paul Lemos on drums.  They will perform a wide range of classic rock, modern rock, and popular punk hits.

THE SIDEKICKS band is a rocking group that has performed throughout Florida.  The group includes two siblings, Ryan Medina, a multitalented 13 year old that started performing at the age of 11 is the lead singer and lead guitar player.  Melanie Medina, his 17 year old sister, owns the Bass as she commands the stage during the show. Jean-Paul Lemos, 20 and experienced beyond his years, is a master on the drums. Crowds of all ages are amazed as the young group performs a wide variety of music featuring Rock, Classic Rock, Alternative, and Punk hits. Original songs are currently being developed and recorded.  Recent performances include the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino at Murphy’s Law, Acreage Festival, Bru’s Room RPB, SFL Fair 2012, Cancer benefits and private events.
