WHS Wolverines Baseball Team Holds their 17th Annual Golf Tournament at Madison Green

 

The Wellington High School Wolverine Baseball team is holding their 17th Annual Golf Tournament fundraiser on November 18, 2012 at Madison Green Golf Club.  The monies raised from this tournament directly benefit the High School Baseball Team to purchase new uniforms, field equipment, replace dugouts on the field, participate in Spring Tournament in Sarasota, and many other needs.

On Thursday, October 18th, The Panther Run Elementary PTA held its first “Monster Mash.” Students and families as well as faculty came dressed in their best Halloween attire. Pure Energy Entertainment kept everyone up and dancing all night.   It was a “sold out” event!

Norton celebrates Veterans Day with a salute to WWII Veterans    

Free admission to all veterans during Art After Dark on Nov. 8

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (Oct. 24, 2012) – The Norton Museum of Art is celebrating Veteran’s Day early with a tribute to WWII veterans at Art After Dark on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012. Highlights of the celebration include screenings of the new WWII documentary Shot Up & Shot Down, focusing on the harrowing war experiences of three B-17 crewmen (who eventually retired to Palm Beach County), and the special exhibition Keep Calm and Carry On: WWII and the British Home Front, 1938-1951, which examines how Britain’s creative class rallied the public to persevere during the Blitz.

 

 Admission to the Museum is free to all veterans with a valid ID. The Norton’s weekly Art After Dark, a blend of culture and entertainment, runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Museum also will honor veterans with free admission on Veteran’s Day on Nov. 11, 2012.

 

The schedule for the Nov. 8 Art After Dark is:

4:30-5:30 p.m. – Screening of Shot Up & Shot Down, a new documentary by local director Scott Messmore. The film focuses on three members of the U.S. Army Air Force who served on three different B-17 bombers, were all shot down, survived, sent to three different POW camps, and ended up in the same retirement community in Palm Beach County. A discussion following the screening will feature director Messmore, and one of the crewmen, Irwin Stovroff, who lives in Boca Raton.

5:30 p.m. “Art of the Time,” a docent–led tour of the Museum Collection, featuring works from the 1940’s by Jackson Pollock, Edward Hopper, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Henry Moore, and others.

6:30 p.m.: Docent-led tour of special exhibition Keep Calm and Carry On.

7:45 p.m. Scott Messmore introduces a second screening of Shot Up and Down.

Throughout the evening, jazz trio Porcelain Ensemble performs American popular music of the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s in the Atrium.

The Norton Museum of Art is a major cultural attraction in Florida, and internationally known for its distinguished Permanent Collection featuring American Art, Chinese Art, Contemporary Art, European Art and Photography. The Norton is located at 1451 S. Not just for teens!

 Did you have a Bat Mitzvah? Well, if you didNOTnow is your chance! Regardless of your age, whether you are 12, 22 or (G-d bless you) 102, Now’s your chance!

 This year The Wellington Jewish Center will be marking our 13th year here in Wellington, yes our Bar Mitzvah year. We will be instituting many great programs that will encourage everyone in the community to participate and celebrate with us. So please join us.

 This class is geared for all women that haven’t had their Bat Mitzvah. Would you like to learn the meaning behind the symbols? What does it mean to light up the world with one candle? What makes a Jewish woman so special?

 Cost for the 7 week course is $180 and includes books and materials (does not include celebratory party to follow).

 Teens will have meet at a seperate time and will be geared for teens, the Bat Mitzvah series for adults will be directed with adults in mind.

 Course consists of seven class meetings beginning in October; Teens at 5:30-7:00pm and Adults 7:30-9:00pm on Thursday evenings at The JWC, 13860 #4 Wellington trace, Wellington, Florida 33414.

KIDS CANCER FOUNDATION PROVIDES HALLOWEEN FUN FOR LOCAL KIDS BATTLING CANCER 

 

The Kids Cancer Foundation is sponsoring an evening of Halloween fun for local kids and their families who are battling childhood cancer. On Friday, October 26th from 5 pm to 8 pm the Kids Cancer Foundation will be hosting a Halloween Family Fun Night.

The young patients and their families will come to the party dressed in their best costumes and will be treated to an evening of fun made possible thanks to the following generous local sponsors:

Once A Month Charity, Inc.

Mike Collins, will be volunteering his services as a DJ for the event. There will be a variety of Halloween games and crafts for the children to take part in. Once A Month Charity, Inc. will provide all the delicious food and tasty treats that the children and families will be able to munch on throughout the event.

This is a wonderful event that comes about thanks to a community effort and provides these children and their families with an evening where they can just come relax, have fun and at least momentarily, forget their daily struggle battling cancer.

Tomorrow evening (October 25th) the Relay For Life of Wellington will be holding a kickoff at Binks Forest Country Club, here in Wellington. Below is a picture of the invitation for the event. If you attend you will learn about what Relay For Life does and hear about the American Cancer Society who is behind Relay For Life. All of us have been impacted by cancer, whether it be directly, or through a loved one, friend or neighbor. The big event to be held at Wellington High School will be on April 6, 2013 and we are all hoping for an exciting and successful event. Please try to make it out tomorrow evening, but also please RSVP to Mr. Shank so he can know how many people to expect. To those of you who know Bill Smith, RJ Terlep and others from the neighborhood, they will be there too and Bill Smith will be one of the speakers. SMART Ride Breaks Fundraising Record

 

On Tuesday, October 19, 2012 SMART Ride announced a new record as fundraising hit and broke the $500,000 mark. Glen Weinzimer, Founder with excitement sent out a note to all participants congratulating them for breaking a fundraising record with 20+/- days until the actual event this November 16-17 2012.  Organizers believe with the current level of enthusiasm reaching and exceeding last year’s record of  $681,000 is well within reach and is on target to hit $800,000 this year.

 

The SMART Ride is a 2 day, 165 mile bicycle ride from Miami to Key West with 100% of all proceeds raised by the participants going back to help AIDS Service Organizations throughout the state. The SMART Ride sold out in July for riders and in September for support crew.

 

SMART Ride benefits 7 AIDS Service Organizations in Florida. The recipients are AIDS Help in Key West, Center for Positive Connections in Miami, The Pride Center and Children’s Diagnostic Center in Fort Lauderdale, Comprehensive AIDS Program in West Palm Beach, Miracle of Love in Orlando and Metropolitan Charities in Tampa/St Pete.  This year a new program, the 10% Lifeline has been established where 10% of all funds raised will remain in a pool to be given out throughout the year where the needs exist throughout the state.

FAMILIES INVITED FOR SOUTH FLORIDA SCIENCE MUSEUM FUN FEST ON NOVEMBER 23

 

While moms shop till they drop at all the early morning doorbustergirlwithcraft-email-sfscience deals, dads can be a hero and take the kids to burn off their turkey at the South Florida Science Museum’s Family Fun Fest. The event on Friday, November 23 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. will feature many hands-on, science activities as well as the Mobile Learning Adventure (MLA) traveling exhibit for children birth to five-years-old, courtesy of PNC.

 

“This is the second year we will have PNC’s Mobile Learning Adventure at the Museum and it’s a great way to entertain the kids after Thanksgiving,” said Lew Crampton, CEO of the South Florida Science Museum. “We agree with PNC that early childhood education is important and we are happy to offer various early childhood classes right here at the Museum. We look forward to a great crowd on November 23 and thank the Junior League of the Palm Beaches for providing volunteers for the day.”

 

The Museum will overflow onto the front lawn for Family Fun Fest. Guests of all ages will enjoy entertainment, crafts, interactive science labs and exploration of the Museum’s exhibitions, aquarium and current traveling exhibit Treasure! The Mobile Learning Adventure and vendors will be set up outside the Museum. At 3 p.m. guests can head inside to hear kid’s entertainer Patty Shukla giving a free musical performance.

 

The Mobile Learning Adventure is a traveling exhibit that provides an opportunity for parents and caregivers to learn about the importance of early childhood education while engaging in fun activities with their children. The MLA will provide fun, interactive and educational activities for children and parents and demonstrate that everyday activities are learning opportunities. The children can transform into what they want to be when they grow up including an astronaut, fireman, ballerina scientist or doctor. When they are all dressed up, they will have their picture taken to remember the day. The interactive exhibit will also include activities, crafts, giveaways as well as information for parents about early childhood education.

 

Founded in 1961, the South Florida Science Museum is currently in the process of an expansion anticipated to be complete June 2013, and is open while under construction. Featuring fun and educational programming for all ages, the South Florida Science Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to exciting curiosity and furthering the understanding and appreciation of science and technology. The Museum features more than 50 hands-on exhibits, a digital planetarium, fresh and saltwater aquariums, as well as natural history exhibitions. Each year the Museum welcomes more than 125,000 visitors and reaches more than 45,000 students through workshops at the Museum and outreach programs to local schools.

 

Family Fun Fest and Mobile Learning Adventure is free with Museum admission. Admission is: Adults $11.95, Seniors 62+ $10.45, children ages three to12 are $8.95, and children under three years and Museum members are free. Event does not include additional fees for planetarium shows and miniature golf.
