one session as “The Reinvention Guy” know as Peter Fogel discussed personal introspection, improving oneself on many different levels, and strengthening teamwork at the workplace.  The event took place Thursday evening, September 13, at Binks Forest Golf Club in Wellington, Florida.

Prior to entering corporate America and reinventing himself into a Direct Response Copywriter, Marketing Consultant, Corporate Business Speaker, Radio Host and Best Selling Author – Peter Fogel was one of America’s top stand-up comedians.  For over 25 years, he was an improvisational performer who worked or appeared on many major television shows.  In addition, he was a standup comic in Las Vegas working with big name comedians.  His published information states that it is his “in-the-trenches” experience that allows him to help others in balancing work/life and being the best one can be in their chosen career.  As the evening unfolded, that statement appeared to be true.

Peter explained the meaning of re-invention as a complete make-over, bringing back into existence or use, recast something familiar and old into a different form.  He applied this definition to people and discussed how they can utilize this principle in their lives to improve their situations.  He discussed his definition of the “golden handcuffs” to be “making a lot of money and having a good lifestyle however, hating what you do.”  To get out of these handcuffs, he reviewed the Four Modes of Learning which were: Unconscious Incompetence; Conscious Incompetence; Conscious Competence; Unconscious Competence.   Everything he discussed was sprinkled in humor.

There was also a funny, interesting, interactive group exercise with seven volunteer participants.  The purpose was to demonstrate how teamwork starts and how it gets better over time.  The people attending began getting involved with this exercise as well.  They jumped in to help the volunteers so the whole room eventually got involved.

This was the 5th session of the Small Business RoundTable series.  The 6th and final series will be in October and the information on that session will be provided shortly.

For more information about the Small Business RoundTable, contact Executive Director Michela Perillo-Green at 561. 792.6525 or write to SmallBusinessRoundTable@WellingtonChamber.com.  Also visit The Wellington Chamber of Commerce online at http://WellingtonChamber.com.

January, 2013 – Apply Today to Be a Part of the PB Poetry Festival in January of 2013

I too, having lost faith / in language, have placed my faith in language. So writes Terrance Hayes in his poem “Snow For Wallace Stevens,” from his National Book Award winning collection “Lighthead.”

Doesn’t “language” in the context of this poem also mean poetry? Returning to earlier lines in the poem, Hayes asks us an important question, “How, with pipes of winter / lining his cognition, does someone learn / to bring a sentence to its knees?”

In the context of the upcoming festival, my response to this question is to suggest you indicate Terrance Hayes as your first choice of a workshop on your festival application! It isn’t just this poem that demonstrates the art and energy we find in the work of the award-winning poet, Terrance Hayes. Explore our website faculty bios and workshop descriptions. Take a moment to enjoy the entire poem “Snow for Wallace Stevens.”

The festival is a time when poets can put their faith in poems and language and the power of poetry like no other time of the year. We our events so that everything we do supports the work of poets, and celebrates poems and poetry.

Read more about Terrance Hayes at The Poetry Foundation , and The Academy of American Poets. Or read and listen to Hayes reading, introduced by David Wojahn at Blackbird.

Won’t you join us in January in Delray Beach? The dates are January 21-26, 2013, at Old School Square Cultural Arts Center in Delray Beach. In addition to Terrance Hayes, the festival faculty includes: B.H. Fairchild, Jane Hirshfield, Tony Hoagland, Laura Kasischke, Thomas Lux, Tracy K. Smith, and Lisa Russ Spaar.

Seize this opportunity to focus on your work in the extraordinary atmosphere of Delray Beach in January! We can’t guarantee the weather, but you can leave snow behind! Visit the workshop descriptions on our website–choose up to four poets with whom you would like to study. The more choices you list on your application, the better your chances of acceptance in a workshop of your choice. Workshops are limited to 12 participants and three auditors.

TAI CHI HEALTHY CHOICE FOR PEOPLE WITH ARTHRITIS

Arthritis Foundation Offers New Joint-Safe Activity

[W.P.B.] – For centuries, Tai Chi has been practiced in China as an effective exercise for physical and mental well-being.  Now, the Arthritis Foundation is launching a new joint-safe Tai Chi program designed to improve the quality of life for people with arthritis, as more and more people turn to alternative approaches to address chronic conditions.

Tai Chi from the Arthritis Foundation is designed for people of all ages seeking a joint-safe exercise routine, but particularly those with mild to moderate arthritis.  Research shows moderate physical activity helps people with arthritis feel better and relieves pain.  Tai Chi may be especially suitable for people with joint problems because its movements are slow and gentle, and the level of exertion can be adjusted to suit each person’s physical condition.  In addition, the movements in the style of Tai Chi used by the Arthritis Foundation are performed at higher stances, which make it easier and more comfortable to learn.

The benefits of Tai Chi may include reduced pain and stiffness, improved concentration and memory, greater balance, increased flexibility, enhanced muscle strength, along with improved ability to cope with stress and depression.

Tai Chi from the Arthritis Foundation will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays – beginner class 10:00 am, advanced class (for those who have completed Part 1 & Part 2) 11:00 am,  beginning October 9, 2012 at the Arthritis Foundation, 400 Hibiscus Street, West Palm Beach.   The sessions will run for 5 weeks, and the cost is $66.   All classes are taught by instructors who have undergone a special Arthritis Foundation instructor-training workshop.

To register for Tai Chi from the Arthritis Foundation or for more information, contact Susie Rhodes at 561-833-1133.
