It is my pleasure to announce that the 2012 Talkin Turkey Tennis Tournament is a go!!!! As you know it will be held at the Deerfield Beach Tennis Center on Thanksgiving Eve starting at 6:30 PM.

Please feel free to bring your family members, friends or guests that may be staying with you during the holiday.  Of course tennis will be played in a round robin format so be sure to bring your racket.

This year there will be an entrance fee of 1 new package of mens, ladies or childrens underwear that will be donated to the Miami/Broward Rescue Mission which helps the homeless population in both counties.

I have worked with this organization for 15 years and the need for CLEAN underwear for both women, men and children is certainly overwhelming. I hope that you will agree that to help the cause in this small way we will be doing a great service for the homeless.

The recipient of our raffle donations this year is the Florida Breast & Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program which is run by the Florida Department of Health.

This year’s raffle will be awesome so bring lots of $$. 😉   As always if everyone can bring a dish, nothing to elaborate or too much trouble for you, that would be great.  If all goes well we can expext 35-50 people

Please feel free to contact me with any questions. My cell number is 954-650-4127.

Thank you so much and I look forward to seeing everyone!!

The group lesson on Black Friday is aimed at introducing the instrument to the children and allowing them to learn first chords and songs. Ukuleles will be provided for use during the class.

We will be starting our free holiday arts and crafts session at 3:00pm.

These are all free and included in price of admission.

December, 2012 – Ribbon Cutting for Re/Max Direct

The Wellington Chamber of Commerce Had a
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony For REMAX Direct

A big red, white, and blue RE/MAX “Grand Opening” Balloon was well inflated and lit up Thursday night, November 8, 2012, on the grounds of the Mall at Wellington Green.  REMAX Direct just opened up their new office located at 10240 Forest Hill Boulevard and it was an evening full of people with smiles, live saxophone music, and plenty of food and drink.

L-R: Bob Salerno (peach shirt), Partners Andrew Burrow and Brian Russo, Gary Corvino, Rona Klein.

Entering into this new REMAX Direct office, one steps into a refreshing, modern, airy, open environment unlike most real estate offices.  Floors are wood; walls are white; the furniture is modern as is the lighting.  There is a general flow of positive energy in the air.  There are cozy booths to do business in and chat.  The conference room is divided with glass walls and doors; the table is made of concrete which is unique and fits in well with the decor.  Computer access is everywhere. The office has a feel of high tech combined with simple, neat, and modern.  This location of REMAX Direct is owned and operated by Brian Russo and Andrew Burrow who own other locations as well.

Brian Russo was born in Queens, New York and raised on Long Island.  He went to college in Rhode Island and earned a Business Finance Degree in 1993.  Soon after he moved to Palm Beach County, he started buying and investing in real estate.  He was buying single family and multi-unit properties.  This worked well for him so he decided to get more involved in the real estate industry.

Brian spoke with a good friend who was a real estate broker and decided to open up his first REMAX Direct location in Boynton Beach in 2001.  In 2003, he opened another office in Lake Worth.  Both offices became successful very quickly so in 2004 he purchased another four REMAX Direct offices which were already operational.  Shortly after, he added on a seventh office in Delray Beach.  “Then the market changed and it turned on us so we quickly went from expansion to cost cutting consolidation.”  Brian said he told his partner Andrew Burrow; “We need a fresh start.”   So he and Andrew developed a new concept for their office that would include more location visibility, more light, and more openness.   They also wanted to move the activity up to the front of the office so clients could feel the energy and get excited.

Andrew Burrow was born in South Florida.   He grew up in Coral Springs and Parkland and then graduated from the University of Florida in 1999 with a Business Degree.  He got his real estate license in Gainesville before he moved back to South Florida where he had a job lined up in real estate.  He said, “I loved it.  I was always interested in architecture, houses, and looking at houses.”   So in 2002 he went to work for Brian at REMAX Direct.  After 9 years they became partners in 2012.  Today, Andrew and Brian have two offices open and 2 in the process of being opened.

Regarding the new location Andrew said “We modeled this office after the Apple Store – clean, simple, modern, open and inviting.  We want our agents to meet clients here instead of at Starbucks.   We provide the coffees, espressos, and the atmosphere along with the technology to showcase our business. ”

Brain noted that in the past, clients would sit with agents for hours.  They would research properties with their clients in an old conference room, determine which ones they wanted to look at, make appointments to visit properties, then go out and physically look at them.  He stated, “Today the flow of information has increased and has become less time consuming.  Now buyers are very informed about the inventory that’s out there that is specific to their needs and desires before they come into the office. They are on their computers at home researching the properties and they have a real good grasp of where they want to be.  We used to have an interview process between the agent and the client that used to last a couple of hours.  This has now shortened down to 10 – 15 minutes.”

Brain added “Most of our agents are doing business on their iPads and signing documents on DocuSign.   Clients and agents are no longer inundated with mounds of paperwork and we are now a paperless office.  Technology speeds things up and makes everything more efficient which makes things easier for agents and clients.”

Both Andrew and Brian noted that REMAX Direct is the #1 real estate company in the world and has the most brand recognition.  Brain said, “It is the #1 company regarding online presence and all other media.  They have the best resources available regarding technology, knowledge of the business and support.  REMAX will provide the most advertising of your property.”

For more information about REMAX Direct contact Brian Russo at 561.880.2660 or 561.702.8870.  Email him at BRusso@HomesByDirect.com and visit the website at www.Direct.Florida.Remax.com.  Also check out The Wellington Chamber of Commerce website at http://WellingtonChamber.com for all types of business and community information.

Radio Hour Brings Historic Christmas Flair to the Playhouse

November 1, 2012 – The Lake Worth Playhouse brings The 1940’s playRadio Hour to life. Radio Hour is a fun-filled, family-friendly evening of theatre just in time to summon up the holiday spirit.

Synopsis

The play portrays the final holiday broadcast of the struggling Mutual Manhattan Variety Cavalcade as it takes to the air during World War II to record its broadcast for the troops overseas. It features hit songs from the era, dancing and old time sound effects. It’s the story of a harassed producer whose lead singer is often drunk, a delivery boy who wants a chance behind the mic, a second banana who dreams of singing a ballad and a trumpet-playing sound effects man who chooses a fighter plane over Glenn Miller.

play2Cast

  • Clifton Feddington: The announcer and general manager (head of everything at WOV). He has ulcers from it all and is sometimes hysterical.
  • Ann Collier: The ‘old standard’ in the Radio show since its start in 1936. She sings like Dinah Shore, Doris Day and Peggy Lee (all rolled into one). She is a secretary by day and at looker by night who is dating Johnny.
  • Johnny Cantone: Featured vocalist with the Cavalcade who is on Sinatra’s bandwagon. He’s an ex-boxer and a rough guy who drinks too much and has a voice like velvet.
  • Ginger Brooks: A bubble-headed waitress-turned-singer. She has a pinup, Betty Grable look with lots of makeup and speaks with a Gracie Allen vacancy.
  • Geneva Lee Browne: The southern Belle of WOV got her start in music at age 17 performing in local Swing ballrooms around the Atlanta area.
  • B.J. Gibson: The third of the Gibson brothers to work for the Cavalcade. He is squeaky-clean, good looking, and a preppy student at Yale.
  • Connie Miller: A 17-year-old bobbysoxer from Ogden, Utah. She is perennially in love and runs an elevator by day.
  • Pops Bailey: A crotchety, wizened stage doorkeeper who is a racing bookie on the company phone and reads hidden copies of Show Girl magazine.
  • Lou Cohn: A big shot (at least in his own mind) who tries to impress the girls and is sometimes obnoxious. He runs the show and is the sound effects man.
  • Wally Ferguson: Young hopeful from Altoona, Pennsylvania who came to NYC to work for his uncle at the drugstore to get his big show-biz break.
  • Zoot Doubleman: WOV Orchestra Leader

The 2013 Dressage Summit – A Rare Opportunity For Dressage Enthusiasts To Engage with an Unprecedented Lineup Of the World’s Top Trainers

Wellington, FL (November 13, 2012) – For dressage enthusiasts, parellisummitwinter in Wellington is the best way to usher in the new year. Each year, familiar faces and new ideas, steeped in long standing traditions, are a big part of the equestrian community celebrations.  2013 will be no exception, especially with the debut of the Dressage Summit, a 3-day unprecedented event bringing together the best of classical dressage, competitive dressage training and natural horsemanship methods presented by five of the top names in the business.  Featuring Klaus Balkenhol, Walter Zettl, Christoph Hess, and Linda and Pat Parelli, The Dressage Summit, will focus on working together to build stronger horse/human partnerships in classical dressage. These renowned presenters will demonstrate how to apply the fundamental principles of classical dressage to every level of the sport while respecting the dignity of both horse and human. This groundbreaking collaboration between dressage masters and top horsemen provides an exciting new perspective where dressage and natural horsemanship converge to enhance the training of the dressage athlete.

“Dressage is not only about the fancy piaffe,” states Christoph Hess, “It is about the art of the simple essentials like transitions, good riding and the careful training and development of the equine athlete.”  Hess is an FEI ‘I’ judge in both dressage and eventing, and is currently the Head of Instruction and Head of the Personal Members Department at the DOKR, or German National Federation, which is the German equivalent to the United States Equestrian Federation. He is actively involved in the education of judges and instructors in Germany and worldwide. He has written and co-authored several books, videos, and articles, and conducts workshops, forums, and symposiums for judges, trainers, and riders throughout the international dressage and eventing communities.  Hess will be presenting a tremendous amount of information gained over his years of experience throughout the event.

Klaus Balkenhol will also share his insight during the Dressage Summit.  “Don’t force the horse, it’s all about the seat,” he instructs.  Balkenhol is a German dressage trainer and rider with multiple Olympic medals to his name. He won Team Gold and Individual Bronze at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, and Team Gold at the 1998 Atlanta Olympics. He also won the Team Gold and Individual Silver at the 1994 World Equestrian Games, and has trained many champion riders. He is the author of several dressage books and he also served as coach of the US Olympic team in 2008.

Linda and Pat Parelli will also be contributing their vast experience with equine behavior, psychology, and training.  In recent years, Linda Parelli has devoted herself to the study of classical dressage with dressage master Walter Zettl. Through this collaboration, and using her extensive knowledge of equine psychology, she has developed a systematic way to teach contact with the horse. Following the classical training scale, Linda Parelli’s “Game of Contact” provides a step-by-step method to train a horse to willingly seek contact with the bit, as well as solve problems associated with the bit.

Pat Parelli is known worldwide as the founder of Parelli Natural Horsemanship, and his ability to transform extremely challenging horses in any discipline into willing partners has kept him constant demand.  The Parelli’s have had an impact on thousands of horses and riders from pleasure riders to some of the world’s most decorated riders such as American Olympic eventers Karen and David O’Connor, Spanish Olympic dressage rider Luis Lucio, and British Olympic show jumpers Robert and John Whitaker, to name a few.  During the Summit, the Parellis will focus on the mental and emotional aspects of training horses, and how to use this knowledge to train successful, willing athletes at any level of competition.  Their collaborative work with Walter Zettl has opened the door for their training techniques to merge with classical dressage principles for truly astounding results.

“It’s a matter of trust and we need to make it playful so the horse enjoys his training,” states Zettl. “You should be able to train the most complicated maneuvers without the horse even realizing it is difficult.”  Zettl has a lifetime of valuable experience that he will be sharing at the Summit, including his belief in the importance of cross training for the horse, patience for the rider, and the development of trust between them.  His long list of global accomplishments includes numerous awards and medals.  In 1984, he coached dressage for the Canadian 3-day event Team at the Los Angeles Summer Olympics. During this time he was recognized by the Province of Ontario for his Distinguished Performance in the field of amateur sport. For the last twenty-eight years Zettl has continued his lifelong work of teaching riders the art of dressage combined with communication with the horse. In 1998 his book “Dressage In Harmony” was published. He has also written many articles for German and US publications such as USDF Connection and Dressage Today. He also released a five-volume DVD library, an instructional series called “A Matter of Trust.” His latest work is a book entitled “The Circle of Trust”. In 2013 Walter will release his third book titled “Ask Walter”.

Topics for the Dressage Summit range from developing the basics in any horse, overcoming training issues, developing a confident, willing horse, practical application of the dressage training scale for any horse, developing a physically and emotionally fit athlete to for competition, and applying psychology for the horse (and rider) to improve the partnership.  Whether you are dressage competitor or a horse owner with a desire to use dressage principles to improve your horse’s training, the Dressage Summit offers a once in a lifetime opportunity to add to your training tool box.

Along with an unparalleled experience at the Dressage Summit, attendees will also have the opportunity to experience the resort destination of Palm Beach County, Florida.  Wellington, Florida is known as the Sport Horse mecca of the US and world-class show jumping and dressage CDI competitions are taking place with in minutes of the Dressage Summit.  In addition, there are pristine beaches, international polo, golf, shopping, fine dining and posh Palm Beach all in a 15-mile radius.

The Dressage Summit sponsors, Premier Equestrian, Dressage Today and the United States Dressage Federation will also be onsite to ensure attendees are treated to three days of elegant, exciting education.  3-day tickets for the 2013 Dressage Summit are available for only $195, and one-day tickets are $95.  Limited VIP tickets are available for $395 and include catered food, complementary beer and wine, as well as the chance to mingle with Dressage Summit presenters.  For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.dressagesummit.com or call 1-855-727-3554.

The New Kid on the Block: Cheddar’s Casual Café

By Saucy Sarah

Cheddar’s Casual Café has opened its doors in Wellington just in time for the holiday season. Cheddar’s is a chain restaurant, hailing from Texas, that boasts handmade food at budget-friendly prices. I was eager for the grand opening to arrive and have the chance to try out their menu; a collection of homespun family favorites, with a touch of Tex-Mex.

2012-11-02_18-50-33_858The restaurant is a cozy combination of rich dark woods and stone. I was pleasantly surprised by the wide open main dining room and huge paddle fan lazily rotating over the bustling dinner crowd. The tables are made of real butcher block and there is a delightful lack of the typical “kitschy” collections of old Americana we see littering the walls at most local bar& grills.

There is something for everyone on Cheddar’s menu. A good way to2012-11-02_19-56-24_483 begin is to order the plate of three hot buttered croissants ( $1.99). They arrive warm and fluffy with a light drizzle of gooey sugar icing. They are addictive, so be careful not to spoil your dinner! We also tried the Homemade Onion Rings ($4.50). Thin and crispy, they come with a Cajun and a ranch dipping sauce. I was delighted that the onion rings were not greasy at all. I also tried the house salad, just $1.99 with entrée purchase, with Cheddar’s famous homemade ranch dressing. The salad is filled with fresh vegetables and the ranch is creamy and tastes homemade.

2012-11-02_20-02-12_915For our entrée’s, I tried the Rib & Shrimp combo platter ($13.59). The shrimp can be ordered fried or grilled, I opted for the fried. The shrimp was fried perfectly, a bit spicy, but not greasy at all and the cocktail sauce was fresh and a good complement. A half rack of nicely smoked ribs came with the shrimp. The BBQ sauce is sweet and tangy and they do a good job of not over-saucing the ribs. My companion had the Bacon Cheeseburger ($5.79). You have to tack on $1.99 if you want fries, or any side, they do not come with the meal. The burger was tasty, but we questioned if the patty was actually fresh and handmade or if it was frozen. When a restaurant’s mission is “from scratch” food, you do not want your customers wonder if that is really the case.

We were too full to try one of Cheddar’s tempting desserts, but I am 2012-11-02_20-13-56_144looking forward to returning for a second visit and trying the Monster Cookie Sundae ($4.99). A chocolate chip cookie baked in a cast iron skillet and topped with ice cream and all the fixings. That doesn’t sound bad at all.

Cheddar’s cozy atmosphere and good food and great prices make it an idea place to take the whole family, and visiting holiday guests, without breaking the bank. I look forward to trying more of their menu on a second visit.
