18th Annual Lake Worth Street Painting Festival

Watch art emerge February 25– 26 in downtown Lake Worth

More than 600 artists will use the asphalt as their canvas to transform the streets of downtown Lake Worth into a temporary outdoor museum February 25 – 26 during the 18th Annual Street Painting Festival. The paintings – made only of chalk – range in style from Renaissance Classicism to Cubism and Pop Art, and include both original artwork and masterpiece reproductions. These pieces of art remain only until the next rain washes them away.

The Lake Worth Street Painting Festival claims bragging rights as the world’s  largest, covering more area than any other festival of its kind. This  “outdoor gallery” will be located on Lake and Lucerne Avenues, spanning between  Dixie Highway   and  Federal Highway .  It all starts at 10:00 AM and ADMISSION IS FREE. Parking is available throughout the downtown area, and valet service will also be available. Free festival transportation will make timely loops from the Lake Worth Tri-Rail station to City Hall during festival hours.

The event is produced by Street Painting Festival Inc., a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, and the Greater Lake Worth Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with the City of Lake Worth . Proceeds benefit the Street Painting Festival scholarships offered to graduating Palm Beach County high school students, as well as other community projects associated with the arts.

The Tradition of Street Painting

Traced back to 16th century Italy when itinerant artists would use their chalks to transform pavement into a makeshift canvas, street painting has retained its appeal through the centuries. As in ages past, crowds still gather to watch as fine works of art emerge. The “paintings” last only until the next rain, but the lively spirit and accessibility of the exhibition captivates new audiences each year and inspires lasting memories.

And be sure to join us downtown on Friday, February 24 for a pre festival taste of Lake Worth as the merchants and restaurants kick off the weekend festivities. All day and into the night with activities, music, food and drink.  And  a “Taste of Lake Worth ” Block Party at 6pm.  Enjoy our downtown and many of the Lake Worth restaurants, shops and galleries.

February, 2012 – Norton Museum of Art Receives $1.5 million Grant for Women Artists Exhibitions

0

Norton Museum of Art receives ‘Transformative’ $1.5 million grant FOR A series of exhibitions by women artists

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (May 3, 2011) – The Norton Museum of Art is thrilled to announce a $1.5 million grant from The Leonard and Sophie Davis Fund/ML Dauray Arts Initiative for a six-year project called RAW (Recognition of Art by Women). RAW’s mission is to discover, highlight, showcase, and promote living women artists, a group the grantors believe has been substantially underrepresented, and that the Museum wishes to champion.

With this grant, the Museum will organize six special exhibitions, one in each of the next six years (2011-2016). The inaugural exhibition will premier this fall and feature the rarely-exhibited paintings and drawings of British artist Jenny Saville, It is being organized by the Norton’s Curator of Contemporary Art, Cheryl Brutvan. The grant encompasses exhibition, publication, research, and education programming, and includes the funding of the first Sophie Davis Curatorial Fellow, which the museum is now recruiting, and will allow the Museum to expand its research and exhibition development.

“This is a spectacular gift,” said Museum Executive Director Hope Alswang. “This grant not only represents an incredible opportunity for the Museum to continue a relationship with the Davis family — a family that has been an important part of its history and development over the past two decades — but it is also completely transformative to our contemporary collection. It gives us a dynamic new platform from which to engage our many audiences, and affords our curators the opportunity to speak and publish on important topics. In short, it allows the Museum to influence the way art is being discussed today.”

Alan Davis, son of Leonard and Sophie Davis, who directs the fund, said, “My wife (Mary Lou Dauray) and I discussed opportunities to make a statement about the gender discrimination that still exists today, and the lack of representation of women artists in many museums. We came up with a program that made sense for both the Norton and for us. I have to say it wasn’t very difficult because the Museum was already there in terms of their ideas about women artists, and working with living artists in particular.”

Davis added that, “The grant also provides a perfect opportunity to continue my parents’ support of an important institution. The Norton was one of my mother’s great passions. She was very interested in public access to the arts, and very proud of her association with the Museum.”

The late Leonard and Sophie Davis were among Palm Beach’s most prominent philanthropists. Sophie Davis also served on the Norton Museum’s board, and the couple’s contributions included $2.5 million toward the Museum’s expansion, and a gift of Chinese art. Sophie Davis died in 2000 and Leonard Davis in 2001. Their children established the Leonard and Sophie Davis Fund in 2001.

The Norton Museum of Art is located at 1451 S. Olive Ave. in West Palm Beach, FL., and  is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Closed on Mondays and major Holidays). General admission is $12 for adults, $5 for visitors ages 13-21, and free for Members and children under 13.  Special group rates are available. West Palm Beach residents receive free admission every Saturday with proof of residency. Palm Beach County residents receive free admission the first Saturday of each month with proof of residency. World Renown Violinist Elmar Oliviera to Perform Recently Discovered & Rarely Performed Schumann Violin Concerto

March 5 Concert at Lynn University’s Wold Performing Arts Center Will Be Recorded Live and Released Worldwide on Artek Record Label. Concert Will Be Atlantic Classical Orchestra’s Inaugural Performance in Palm Beach County.

(Boca Raton, FL – February 3, 2012) World famous violinist Elmar Oliviera, Distinguished Artist-in-Residence at the Lynn University Conservatory of Music, will perform the recently discovered and rarely heard Schumann Violin Concerto on Monday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m., at Lynn’s Wold Performing Arts Center in Boca Raton.

This performance will be recorded live and released on the Artek Record Label.  Led by Grammy-nominated conductor, Stewart Robertson, this concert also marks the first performance in Palm Beach County by the highly acclaimed Atlantic Classical Orchestra.

Unsurpassed in his combination of elegance and impeccable artistry, Elmar Oliveira is one of the world’s most distinguished musicians, and he remains the only American violinist to win the Gold Medal at Moscow’s prestigious Tchaikovsky International Competition. He was also the First Prize winner at the Naumburg International Competition and the first violinist to receive the coveted Avery Fisher Prize. Mr. Oliviera’s rigorous concert schedule includes appearances with many of the world’s great orchestras, including the Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, and the Seattle Symphony, to name a few. Mr. Oliveira remains

A prodigious recording artist, Elmar Oliveira’s discography on Artek, Angel, SONY Masterworks, Vox, Delos, IMP, Naxos, Ondine and Melodiya covers a wide range of works from the Baroque period to the present. His best-selling recording of the Rautavaara Violin Concerto with the Helsinki Philharmonic (Ondine) won a Cannes Classical Award and has appeared on Gramophone’s “Editor’s Choice” and other “Best Recordings” lists around the world. He was also a Grammy nominee for his CD of the Barber Concerto with Leonard Slatkin and the Saint Louis Symphony.

The Violin Concerto of Robert Schumann, written in 1853 but not premiered until 1937, represents something of a conundrum.  It was put away for over 80 years because Schumann’s great friend and violin virtuoso, Joseph Joachim, felt that the piece was not representative of his friend’s musical greatness.  The concerto was the last major work to be completed by the composer before the onset of mental illness.  It is a three-movement work that today, is slowly gaining a footing into standard classical repertoire as a powerful and dramatic piece containing some of the most beautiful, lyrical melodies in the classical music genre.

In addition to the Schumann Violin Concerto the Atlantic Classical Orchestra will perform Schumann’s Overture to Hermann und Dorothea and the Overture, Scherzo and Finale.

About the Atlantic Classical Orchestra:

Now in its 22nd season, the Atlantic Classical Orchestra is one of the premiere chamber ensembles in the United States.  With one Grammy Award nomination under his belt, Atlantic Classical Orchestra Artistic Director and Conductor Stewart Robertson is excited to lead the dynamic group of 38 musicians for its first commercial recording and performance in Palm Beach County.

“The making of this CD and the performance in the beautiful new Wold Performing Arts Center marks a very significant step in the development of the Atlantic Classical Orchestra,” says Robertson.  “Our home audiences in Vero Beach and Stuart are already proud of the orchestra’s sophistication, and recording will enhance our reputation in a much wider context and before a much larger audience.”

Robertson is in his eighth season as Artistic Director and Conductor of the Atlantic Classical Orchestra.  The former music director of the 70 year-old Florida Grand Opera and New York’s prestigious Glimmerglass Opera, Robertson has earned an international reputation for artistic excellence that attracts top musicians from some of the world’s leading conservatories from as far away as Chicago, Hartford and South America.
