Felix Mendelssohn (18091847) was born just 18 years after Mozart’s death and many regarded him as Mozart’s heir. Like Mozart, he too would have a very short life span but during his brief 38 years he composed some of our bestloved masterpieces. In addition to his brilliant musical creativity he was a wonderful correspondent writing about his visits with such people as Queen Victoria and Goethe.

ROBERTA RUST In Recital:

Celebrating 20 Years

With this program, pianist Roberta Rust celebrates 20 years of service as artist and educator at the Conservatory. The recital features the Mozart Fantasy in C minor, K. 475, Beethoven Sonata Op. 110, and Chopin Etude Op. 10 No. 12 Revolutionary, Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2, and Scherzo No. 2. Rust will also mark the John Cage centenary(19122012) at this concert, with performances of his 4’33’’, A Room, Quest, and In a Landscape.

Lynn Philharmonia

The Lynn University Philharmonia sets the standard for conservatory level symphonic training. Now in its 19th season as a full symphony, the Philharmonia continues to present high-quality concerts with a wide range of repertoire. The Philharmonia is directed by Albert-George Schram, who is also resident conductor of the Columbus and Nashville Symphonies.

Piano Master Class with Anne Epperson

Pianist Anne Epperson enjoys a distinguished career as a performer, recording artist, teacher and clinician. Newly appointed as Professor of Collaborative Piano at the University of Colorado at Boulder’s School of Music, she has been Professor of Music and Director of Collaborative Arts at the University of California – Santa Barbara since 2001. From 1985 – 2001 she was head of the Collaborative Piano Department at the Cleveland Institute of Music. She has been a guest performer and coach at the Sarasota Music Festival, the Garth Newel Summer Festival, the Taos Chamber Music Festival, the Scotia Festival, Chamber Music Northwest and the Aspen Music Festival, among others. Lynn Conservatory piano students will perform.

Back to Baroque

This Baroque infused concert features gifted Conservatory piano students in works by Baroque masters and composers from later generations inspired by the era. Roberta Rust will provide commentary about the music throughout the program.

Feb. 27 – 4 p.m. (Monday)

Piano Master Class with David Northington

David Northington, professor of music at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has performed concerts and concerto engagements throughout the United States, eastern and western Europe, Canada, China and Russia and led master classes at many of the leading conservatories in these countries. Northington has been a professor of music at UT Knoxville since 1977. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from Yale University School of Music. Students performing are from the studio of Roberta Rust.

Local Artist Celebration: Kathy Morlock

If you have a sweet tooth and know how to use it, then this competition is for you!  We are looking for 6 sugar lovin’ customers to compete in our first ever cookie decorating competition.  Sign up at the customer service desk to reserve your spot.  Each customer will have 15 minutes to perfect their sweet treat.  All ingredients (including the cookie) will be provided.   First place winner will receive a $50 Whole Foods Market gift card and all participants will receive an extra sweet gift just for playing. Stick around after the customer competition to watch Whole Foods Market Team Members compete for bragging rights and a $50 Gift Card for the winner!

The Top 24 contestants advance to the Semi-Finals on Friday, February 10th beginning at 7:30 pm at the Wellington Amphitheater. The Top 12 performers will return to the Amphitheater for the Finals on Saturday, February 11th at 7:30 pm for one last performance and the dramatic announcement of the winners. The Finals will be taped and broadcast at a later date on Comcast Channel 18.

 

The Grand Prize winner of Wellington Idol will go home with a $750 cash prize as well as a full scholarship sponsored by Talent INC to attend the Talent INC National Talent Conference & Showcase at the Hilton Walt Disney World Resort in March – a prize valued at $1,950! This conference will afford the Wellington Idol winner the ability to perform in front of 25 top talent agencies. Three Runners-Up will each receive a $250 cash prize.

Learn about the expansive world of growing herbs with Dennis Gretton of D&D Growers. This workshop will cover herbs that grow well in our unique climate. Everything from the right conditions, selection, growing, harvesting, and uses of culinary and medical herbs will be discussed. Recipes and tastings will be featured and a large selection of herbs will be for sale. The Evening Herb Society of the Palm Beaches will be on hand to facilitate this informative and tasty workshop.

 

Designing, Creating & Maintaining a Home Landscape

Saturday, February 18 & 25 – 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Mounts Auditorium

Members $50; Non-members $60

Running on consecutive Saturdays through March 3, this three-session workshop will take participants through all the steps needed to improve a home landscape.

+ Session One (February 18) includes an evaluation of site conditions, how to avoid common landscape mistakes and a review of good design principles.

+ Session Two (February 25) will begin with a tour of Mounts Botanical Garden to see and discuss a large number of plants suitable for South Florida. Attendees also will learn about purchasing, planting and establishing the plants.

+ Session Three (March 3): Master Gardeners will work closely with participants to address individual landscape problem areas, evaluate ideas and discuss options. Tips and techniques to conserve water, reduce pesticide use and minimize maintenance will finish the program.

Mounts Botanical Garden is Palm Beach County’s oldest and largest public garden.  Mounts displays tropical and subtropical plants from around the world, including plants native to Florida, exotic trees, tropical fruit, herbs, citrus, palms and more. As a component of the Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Service, and through its affiliation with the University of Florida IFAS, Mounts is the place to connect with Extension Horticulturists, Master Gardeners, the Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Program, and professional horticultural advisors.
