Breakfast Networking Meeting in Boynton Beach

 

This is an invitation to a networking meeting Thursday December 15th, from 7:30-8:45 AM. We meet on a Thursday each month sometimes the third, sometimes the fourth so you can always check if you don’t hear from me.

We are meeting in Boynton Beach at The Greek Grocer/Cafe & Deli. It is in the Quantum Town Center 1 Block West of I-95 on the south side of the street. Actual address is 1034 Gateway Blvd. #110. This is a new location this month and should be fun.

You can find us on www.meetup.com as well. Everybody should check that out for other great groups as well or even start your own if you have a particular interest or topic.

We socialize and have coffee and a bite to eat until about 8. Then there is a conference call with Fran Tarkenton ( former NFL quarterback) for about 15 minutes and then we get to introduce ourselves and talk about our business a little bit. Very informative. Bring cards, flyers, coupons etc.

No charge for the meeting. Not one person specific so come one come all!

14th Annual WXELTV/PBS KIDS Holiday Book Drive launched on Nov. 28, 2011

 

West Palm Beach–In the traditional spirit of giving, the 2011 WXELTV/ PBS KIDS Holiday Book Drive (14th Annual) launched following the Thanksgiving holiday on Monday, November 28th and it will continue through Friday, December 30th.  The drive benefits the WXEL PBS KIDS/Ready To Learn service (RTL)—the early childhood educational service which is public television’s contribution toward our nation’s most urgent educational goal: preparing children for success in school, particularly in reading skills, through the reach of public broadcasting. 

 

WXEL’s Education Specialist, Samantha Conde, trains parents and educators to prepare at-risk children in literacy skills development, always emphasizing the importance of

co-viewing and of the RTL Learning Triangle to caregivers (view/do/read).  This facilitation process is based on the award-winning educational and violence-free PBS KIDS/Ready To Learn television programming.  The specialist regularly distributes new children’s books (Scholastic or Random publications) on a complimentary basis to designated sites in the community. 

 

This annual holiday book drive will allow WXEL to distribute hundreds of additional NEW & USED children’s books to parents and educators of at-risk children ages 2 – 8.  The books collected during this holiday drive will be distributed by the WXEL Education Specialist at sites throughout the community through January 2012.  Thanks to the generosity of many individuals and groups, WXEL expects to celebrate another successful book drive.  This year’s main sponsor continues to show its generous support: The Gold Coast and the Treasure Coast chapters of the Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP)/www.hftp-florida.org.  WXEL TV is pleased to announce that the Hispanic Leads Group – Greater Boynton Beach Chamber of Commerce has joined as a sponsor for the first time/www.hispanicleadsgroup.com.

Interview by Shawn Thompson

An Interview with Maureen (Reenie) Brewer, founder and director of Magical Ponies.  She answered some questions about this special new animal assisted therapy program.

Magical Ponies is a very special program for kids ages 3 to teen and for adults and seniors that love fluffy, small ponies.  This program is sponsored by The Good Earth Farm in Loxahatchee, FL, and they have found that these ponies possess some magical qualities of healing.  They work with emotional and psychological parts of our brain and make magic!  They also find that some people with severe problems, even physical ones, heal and change for the better just by visiting with these ponies for a half an hour, once a week!

AW:  Please tell us about yourself.

 for special children in my 20’s.  I also am President of the board of Directors for a non-profit organization that assists misplaced children. Much of my history is in listening and offering kind truths and suggestions.  Kids, when you have their attention, listen better because they trust us to have the answers.  I have four children, 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.  My life is full of kids and STUFF, we struggle with it as well, but I know when one is aware, one can prepare!

AW:  How did you get involved with The Good Earth Farm?

Nancy Fried, the owner of the Good Earth Farm, invited me to join her because her plate is so full running the farm.  Her ability to work with the animals has always impressed me.  I love them and I love kids.  I want the world to be a much kinder place.  If we start with the very young, maybe we’ll get there.  My gift is keeping things balanced and copasetic.  I actually have that gift with people of all ages.  The program was Nancy’s idea since she has everything we need right at her farm!  My grandson Michael Brewer has greatly benefited from working with horses and is now helping with this wonderful program.

AW:  What are some of the things someone will do during their visit with a pony?

The pony time will be one of bonding and learning to trust and earn trust.  You will get to spend time with the pony and dress them up in a costume!  Dressing up the pony without a fight is a lesson in itself, talking and walking with them continues that relationship.  Sometimes kids need a buddy such as a small, little fluffy mini horse just to hang out with, read to, eat a snack with, love on…maybe unconditional love from one of our 10 minis who understand kids!

The first time I had master stylist Leeta Clark cut my hair I noticed that she asked more questions than anyone else had ever asked about my hair.  I found it very helpful, especially as she presented me with different ideal hairstyles that I might like – whipping through pages of magazines and carefully looking at celebrity hairstyles together with me.  Since I am not well-versed in hair style lingo, this was really a good way to start out.  All I had to do was point to what I wanted, narrow it down and voila!  She did the rest and it came out beautifully.

Leeta Clark, manager of The Salon at ULTA Beauty (which is located on 441 just north of Forest Hill), explains that finding out what someone wants for their hair is one of her favorite parts of the job.  “I can adapt it to their lifestyle, after a thorough consultation,” she says. At The Salon at ULTA, they also specialize in corrective color, able to fix even really bad hair mistakes.

It’s terrific to have such a pro hairstylist right here, located in our Wellington/ Royal Palm Beach area!

All of the hair designers at The Salon at ULTA are well-skilled – they go through a rigorous initial training and must demonstrate their ability by doing color on a model. They update their knowledge and skills seasonally, learning the latest trends and techniques from Redken ® professionals.

I asked Leeta what the biggest challenge is in the world of hair styling today. “Right now, it’s the economy,” she replied without hesitation. “People feel that they cannot have the services that they want, but we can work with them without breaking the bank. People want celebrity hair. We can provide less expensive techniques like spotlighting certain areas, using highlights and lowlights, instead of doing the whole head, for example. At ULTA, we provide creative solutions, able to take it down a notch, if needed, for financial reasons.”

Customers really seem to appreciate this. They know, ahead of time, what services they are going to need to maintain their hairstyle and the cost impact in the long run. They love getting individualized hair care and finding a unique look that fits them personally.

Leeta explains that using the right products for your hair type at home is key. “Don’t overuse hot tools – like curling irons and flat irons,” she says. She also recommends that women with long hair remember to get their hair trimmed regularly, even if growing out their hair. “It keeps the ends fresh and keeps the style going.”

WEST PALM BEACH (November 29, 2011) – The Palm Beach County Medical Society will host a groovy evening of dinner & dancing at the Hippie Holiday Gala, the Annual Installation of the Palm Beach County Medical Society and fundraiser for Project Access. The event will be held at the Kravis Center Cohen Pavilion on Saturday, December 3, 2011, 6:30pm. Jack Zeltzer, M.D. will be installed as the 2012 Palm Beach County Medical Society President. Come out and enjoy a walk after you open presents and celebrate with your family. The Refuge grounds will remain open all day. 

The Refuge is located off U.S. 441/SR 7, two miles south of SR 804 ( Boynton Beach Blvd. ) and three miles north of SR 806 ( Delray Beach ’s Atlantic Avenue ). The refuge is currently open from 6 am to 7:30 pm, seven days a week. Refuge hours change seasonally and are posted at each entrance. 

The Visitor Center hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., seven days a week. An entrance fee of $5.00 per vehicle or $1.00 per pedestrian is charged. A variety of annual passes, including a $12.00 refuge specific annual pass, are available. For additional information, please visit the refuge website at 

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the principal Federal agency responsible for conserving, protecting, an enhancing fish and wildlife habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. The Service manages the 150-million-acre National Wildlife Refuge System comprised of over 553 national wildlife refuges, thousands of small wetlands, and other special management areas. It also operates 70 national fish hatcheries, 64 fish and wildlife management offices, and 78 ecological services field stations. The agency enforces Federal wildlife laws, administers the Endangered Species Act, manages migratory bird populations, restores nationally significant fisheries, conserves and restores wildlife habitat such as wetlands, and helps foreign governments with their conservation efforts. This program’s focus is on establishing and managing small vegetable projects. Tips on site preparation, seedling establishment, planting, maintenance and harvesting also will be covered. Recommended for the intermediate level gardener. Register early, this popular workshop has sold out quickly in the past.

Come to Mounts and celebrate trees and the importance they have in our lives and world. Various environmental organization will be on hand with activities and exhibits throughout the Garden. Meet Smokey Bear from the Florida Forest Service to learn about fire prevention. Additional activities include Storytime in the Garden provided by the Palm Beach County Library, ceremonial tree planting  of a Paradise Tree and guided tours of the Mounts tree collection, including Florida’s State tree, the Sable Palm. Attendees will receive a complimentary seedling to nurture in their own landscape. Plants from Mounts Nursery Guild will be for sale. Mounts Botanical Garden is Palm Beach County’s oldest and largest public garden.  Mounts displays tropical and subtropical plants from around the world, including plants native to Florida, exotic trees, tropical fruit, herbs, citrus, palms and more.
