December, 2011 – A Thank You

Mommy Moments

Sometimes Being Sick is not So Bad – A Thank You!

By Krista MartinelliKrista Martinelli and kids

Sometimes when you’re a parent and you get sick, you can’t get a break.  It’s not like the good old days when you were single and could take a day or two off from work, actually resting.  Actually doing nothing.

So this past month when I felt a lump in my throat and the beginning stages of either a cold or the flu, I was not looking forward to the usual running around, doing homework, disciplining, cooking and all of those things that you never stop doing for your kids.

And this time, the not-so-lovely feeling of an oncoming cold was worse than usual. Scratchy throat, aching muscles and a gripping headache at the back of my head like I’ve never experienced before. If only I could get a little extra rest somewhere in my day or night, maybe I could get through it quickly and shake it off.  That wish is almost laughable though, because I’ve never been able to do it as the parent of young kids and the owner of a business. Yeah, right…rest!

This is really a “thank you” to my terrific friends and family who made that possible. Yes, I rested this time.  And I recovered quickly!  First, thanks to my friend who always comes in for the hug, even when I’m sick. “Bring it on” is her attitude toward germs, and it’s kind of nice to have a reliable friend who will hug you even when you’re at the sickest stage of being sick.

This is also a thank you to my friend who eagerly asked to pick up my daughter from elementary school on the worst day of my being sick. This gave me an extra hour to rest, which was priceless.  She also gave me some medicine to help me through the next few days. It doesn’t hurt that she’s a nurse and is able to explain what to take and what not to take, etc.

So I’m feeling some relief already because of a little nap. Then one of my neighbors surprises me by knocking on the door and delivering warm butterscotch oatmeal cookies – yum!  She notices that my voice is very scratchy and offers to have both our kids come over to her house to “entertain” her one-year-old baby boy.  My kids think this is a great idea and suddenly I get to rest some more. “This is amazing,” I’m thinking to myself.  Still miserable with congestion and the huge headache, but – wow!  The kindness of people around me is overwhelming.

Normally on a Friday afternoon I take the kids to visit their grandparents, my husband’s parents. I never want to stand in the way of grandparents getting to see the kids and vice versa. However, I’m vaguely remembering that the last time we accidentally brought sickness into their home, Grandma was sick for over three weeks.  We can’t have that happen again!  Since Grandma and Grandpa are approaching ninety years old, I come up with a plan that they agree to – so I’m not spreading the germs. I drop off the kids at their house just before dinner time and get out immediately. Knock on wood, it worked.  And I want to thank these grandparents for the energy that they still have, being able to keep up with a six-year-old girl and a four-year-old boy. They are terrific!

Again I’m finding myself with something I haven’t had much of since the kids were born – “alone time.” I’m happy to know that they (Grandma, Grandpa, my husband Joe and the kids) are having a wonderful dinner.  Meanwhile, I’m recovering and doing all of those things that people tell you to do – like drinking tea with honey, relaxing, spending a little time being quiet. For the first time in ages, I go to bed early.

My husband is looking out for me and brings home a little leftover lobster.  The next morning I wake up and feel 95% better.  I have enough energy to clean up the house, play games with the kids and get some work done. My throat still sounds scratchy, but now the headache is gone. And I know what I’m making for lunch – a lobster roll!  My taste buds are already coming back, so as I’m squeezing a lemon over the mix of lobster, mayo, salt and pepper, I’m getting excited about it.

So yes, life is good.  “Life is Good” is also the name of the Komen Race team that I usually walk with. And I haven’t even yet mentioned several other terrific people who offered to do nice things for me when they heard my sick-sounding voice.  Thank you!  It’s good to feel like everyone around you is looking out for you! After this experience, I just might turn into a hypochondriac.

Breakfast Networking Meeting in Boynton Beach

This is an invitation to a networking meeting Thursday December 15th, from 7:30-8:45 AM. We meet on a Thursday each month sometimes the third, sometimes the fourth so you can always check if you don’t hear from me.

We are meeting in Boynton Beach at The Greek Grocer/Cafe & Deli. It is in the Quantum Town Center 1 Block West of I-95 on the south side of the street. Actual address is 1034 Gateway Blvd. #110. This is a new location this month and should be fun.

You can find us on www.meetup.com as well. Everybody should check that out for other great groups as well or even start your own if you have a particular interest or topic.

We socialize and have coffee and a bite to eat until about 8. Then there is a conference call with Fran Tarkenton ( former NFL quarterback) for about 15 minutes and then we get to introduce ourselves and talk about our business a little bit. Very informative. Bring cards, flyers, coupons etc.

No charge for the meeting. Not one person specific so come one come all!

Bring another business owner that could benefit from the exposure.

Appreciate your time. Please call with questions.

Thanks,

Linda

November, 2011 – 14th Annual WXELTV and PBS KIDS Holiday Book Drive

14th Annual WXELTV/PBS KIDS Holiday Book Drive launched on Nov. 28, 2011

West Palm Beach–In the traditional spirit of giving, the 2011 WXELTV/ PBS KIDS Holiday Book Drive (14th Annual) launched following the Thanksgiving holiday on Monday, November 28th and it will continue through Friday, December 30th.  The drive benefits the WXEL PBS KIDS/Ready To Learn service (RTL)—the early childhood educational service which is public television’s contribution toward our nation’s most urgent educational goal: preparing children for success in school, particularly in reading skills, through the reach of public broadcasting.

WXEL’s Education Specialist, Samantha Conde, trains parents and educators to prepare at-risk children in literacy skills development, always emphasizing the importance of

co-viewing and of the RTL Learning Triangle to caregivers (view/do/read).  This facilitation process is based on the award-winning educational and violence-free PBS KIDS/Ready To Learn television programming.  The specialist regularly distributes new children’s books (Scholastic or Random publications) on a complimentary basis to designated sites in the community.

This annual holiday book drive will allow WXEL to distribute hundreds of additional NEW & USED children’s books to parents and educators of at-risk children ages 2 – 8.  The books collected during this holiday drive will be distributed by the WXEL Education Specialist at sites throughout the community through January 2012.  Thanks to the generosity of many individuals and groups, WXEL expects to celebrate another successful book drive.  This year’s main sponsor continues to show its generous support: The Gold Coast and the Treasure Coast chapters of the Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP)/www.hftp-florida.org.  WXEL TV is pleased to announce that the Hispanic Leads Group – Greater Boynton Beach Chamber of Commerce has joined as a sponsor for the first time/www.hispanicleadsgroup.com.

Additional sponsors which will serve as collection sites for this year’s book drive include the following: Plastridge Insurance Agency/www.plastridge.com in Delray Beach at 820 N. Federal Hwy. (1-800-290-1143) and Hoffman’s Chocolate Shoppes at:  888-281-8800

Once again, WXEL’s collection site will be located at the WXEL studios in the lobby, weekdays between November 28th and December 30th.  The studios are located at

3401 S. Congress Avenue, Boynton Beach (Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm);

561-737-8000.  Again, this year’s drive collects both NEW and USED children’s books, including Scholastic/Random House publications, for children ages 2 – 8.

For more information, please contact the WXEL Community Affairs Department at

561-737-8000 x 4406 or send a message to Samantha Conde at education@wxel.org.

Thank you for your support.

December, 2011 – Magical Ponies at Good Earth Farm

The Magical Ponies Program at the Good Earth Farm

Making a Difference

Interview by Shawn Thompson

An Interview with Maureen (Reenie) Brewer, founder and director of Magical Ponies.  She answered some questions about this special new animal assisted therapy program.

Magical Ponies is a very special program for kids ages 3 to teen and for adults and seniors that love fluffy, small ponies.  This program is sponsored by The Good Earth Farm in Loxahatchee, FL, and they have found that these ponies possess some magical qualities of healing.  They work with emotional and psychological parts of our brain and make magic!  They also find that some people with severe problems, even physical ones, heal and change for the better just by visiting with these ponies for a half an hour, once a week!

AW:  Please tell us about yourself.

I am an ordained Minister and was a certified day care provider

Reenie Brewer of the Magical Ponies Program

for special children in my 20’s.  I also am President of the board of Directors for a non-profit organization that assists misplaced children. Much of my history is in listening and offering kind truths and suggestions.  Kids, when you have their attention, listen better because they trust us to have the answers.  I have four children, 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.  My life is full of kids and STUFF, we struggle with it as well, but I know when one is aware, one can prepare!

AW:  How did you get involved with The Good Earth Farm?

Nancy Fried, owner of the Good Earth Farm
Nancy Fried, owner of the Good Earth Farm

Nancy Fried, the owner of the Good Earth Farm, invited me to join her because her plate is so full running the farm.  Her ability to work with the animals has always impressed me.  I love them and I love kids.  I want the world to be a much kinder place.  If we start with the very young, maybe we’ll get there.  My gift is keeping things balanced and copasetic.  I actually have that gift with people of all ages.  The program was Nancy’s idea since she has everything we need right at her farm!  My grandson Michael Brewer has greatly benefited from working with horses and is now helping with this wonderful program.

AW:  What are some of the things someone will do during their visit with a pony?

The pony time will be one of bonding and learning to trust and earn trust.  You will get to spend time with the pony and dress them up in a costume!  Dressing up the pony without a fight is a lesson in itself, talking and walking with them continues that relationship.  Sometimes kids need a buddy such as a small, little fluffy mini horse just to hang out with, read to, eat a snack with, love on…maybe unconditional love from one of our 10 minis who understand kids!

AW:  How can someone find out more about this program?

If you would like to visit with us at the farm and spend time with your very own lovely pony, please call Reenie at (561) 727-6001 or Nancy at (561) 792-2666.  We charge by donation only for a half hour session (a session is $25 and a minimum donation is $10 and a bag of carrots).  We are located at 2141 B Road, Loxahatchee, FL.  Please don’t hesitate to call us – we have sponsors to help you too!

The Good Earth Farm will be holding a yard sale on Saturday, December 10th from 8-2 to raise money for the Magical Ponies program.  Spaces are available for $20 or they are accepting any items for donation to sell.  Please call (561) 792-2666 for more information.

A really cool offer! When you call Smith Heating & Air to schedule a precision 20-point A/C system tune-up for $60 per system, the entire cost of the tune-up will go directly to the Magical Ponies program at the Good Earth Farm. When they present the invoice, just write your check directly to: The Chocolate Chip Animal Rescue, Inc. (for Magical Ponies). Be cool and make a difference in the lives of young children. Leeta Clark at ULTA Beauty Salon

Finding the Perfect Hairstyle for You

leetaclark
Leeta Clark, Manager at The Salon at Ulta Beauty

The first time I had master stylist Leeta Clark cut my hair I noticed that she asked more questions than anyone else had ever asked about my hair.  I found it very helpful, especially as she presented me with different ideal hairstyles that I might like – whipping through pages of magazines and carefully looking at celebrity hairstyles together with me.  Since I am not well-versed in hair style lingo, this was really a good way to start out.  All I had to do was point to what I wanted, narrow it down and voila!  She did the rest and it came out beautifully.

Leeta Clark, manager of The Salon at ULTA Beauty (which is located on 441 just north of Forest Hill), explains that finding out what someone wants for their hair is one of her favorite parts of the job.  “I can adapt it to their lifestyle, after a thorough consultation,” she says. At The Salon at ULTA, they also specialize in corrective color, able to fix even really bad hair mistakes.

If you haven’t yet stepped into ULTA Beauty, it’s a unique shopping experience.  Inside the very large, very well-organized store, you will find a huge selection of beauty products from discount to high-end. In the back of the store, you will find the salon, where you can get a variety of hair care and skin care services.  New, as of this month, you can also receive an OPI Gel Polish service (which lasts up to two weeks).

The salon offers virtually everything you could look for in color services, using Redken for their color products – glaze, color, highlights, corrective color and dimensional highlights. See the Salon Menu. They also provide formal hair services along with make-up, make-up lessons, facials featuring Dermalogica ® professional skin care products, waxing services, all texturizing services including relaxers, perms and Kerastraight® smoothing treatment. Their hair cutting services are designed to suit your whole family. Extras include feathers and “glam strands.”

ulta salonSalon Manager Leeta Clark brings a great deal of experience to the salon, including 25 years in the hair business. She owned a popular salon in Miami Beach. She also spent a couple of years doing celebrity hair on Fisher Island. She did hair for Demi Moore, Meg Ryan, Anne Bancroft, Beth Burdine (of Burdine’s), various political people and sports figures. It’s terrific to have such a pro hairstylist right here, located in our Wellington/ Royal Palm Beach area!

All of the hair designers at The Salon at ULTA are well-skilled – they go through a rigorous initial training and must demonstrate their ability by doing color on a model. They update their knowledge and skills seasonally, learning the latest trends and techniques from Redken ® professionals.

I asked Leeta what the biggest challenge is in the world of hair styling today. “Right now, it’s the economy,” she replied without hesitation. “People feel that they cannot have the services that they want, but we can work with them without breaking the bank. People want celebrity hair. We can provide less expensive techniques like spotlighting certain areas, using highlights and lowlights, instead of doing the whole head, for example. At ULTA, we provide creative solutions, able to take it down a notch, if needed, for financial reasons.”

Customers really seem to appreciate this. They know, ahead of time, what services they are going to need to maintain their hairstyle and the cost impact in the long run. They love getting individualized hair care and finding a unique look that fits them personally.

Leeta explains that using the right products for your hair type at home is key. “Don’t overuse hot tools – like curling irons and flat irons,” she says. She also recommends that women with long hair remember to get their hair trimmed regularly, even if growing out their hair. “It keeps the ends fresh and keeps the style going.”

ULTA Beauty and Cosmetics is an international company of beauty product stores with many benefits to its members. You can become an ULTA Beauty member for free and receive their weekly circular with all of the specials. ULTA Beauty Club members also receive 20% off one salon service on their first visit.

They also offer a great referral program at ULTA.  Send a friend to The Salon at ULTA and they get $20 OFF one salon service – and also the referring customer gets $20 off of one $50 service for every new customer they refer.  Check it out!

When it comes to giving back, ULTA strives to make a difference in impactful ways to all who we serve – our guests, our employees andulta stores our communities. ULTA’s key initiative in 2011 is its commitment to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® (BCRF).  ULTA’s efforts fund research related to the causes, treatment and possible prevention of breast cancer in our lifetime. Read more about ULTA’s social responsibility.  In October, they had a Cut-a-Thon in the salon and did 62 haircuts and styles. The minimum donation was $10 and 100% of the proceeds went to the BCRF!

ULTA Beauty Store and The Salon are open Sundays from noon to 6pm and Monday thru Saturday from 10am to 9pm. Stop by and say hi to Leeta Clark and the salon staff.  You will enjoy the high quality of hair care they provide, as well as the ULTA Beauty shopping experience!
