November, 2011 – Grandparents’ Circle at JOI

How to Nurture the Jewish Identity of Interfaith Grandchildren

The Grandparents Circle comes to the Greater Palm Beaches

September 8, 2011 – It’s no secret that intermarriage rates in the North American Jewish community are higher than ever before.  When an interfaith couple has children, the grandparents often feel unsure of how they can cultivate the religious identities of their grandchildren, especially when it is not always clear as to how the children will be raised.  The Jewish Outreach Institute (JOI) has created a program called the Grandparents Circle that offers Jewish grandparents the skills and techniques to nurture, and in some cases establish, their interfaith grandchildren’s Jewish identity.  The program, which was piloted in Los Angeles, is rapidly expanding to new communities across the country, and this fall the Grandparents Circle lands here, in the Greater Palm Beaches at various locations.

“I’m excited to be able to bring the Grandparents Circle to my community,” said Amy Bergman, Director of Jewish Family Life at the Friedman Commission for Jewish Education.  “Grandparents can have such a strong influence on the religious identity of their grandchildren, even from a long distance, and this course will help them share Judaism with their grandchildren in an engaging and interesting way.”

The Grandparents Circle program, funded by The Fine Foundation, has a number of components. Our local Grandparents Circle (a 5-session educational course) will meet Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m. on November 1, 8, 15, and December 6, 13. The course is free but registration is required.  Family-friendly events for grandparents and their grandchildren, often held during or close to Jewish holidays or school breaks, supplement the course.

The Grandparents Circle also offers a national email discussion listserve for all grandparents, including those who have not yet taken the course or live in a city where it is not offered.  The listserve provides a supportive online community of peers from across the country to share their experiences, thoughts, and questions.

Jewish Outreach Institute program officer Marley Weiner, who is National Coordinator of the Grandparents Circle, explains that “the Grandparents’ Circle provides a safe, open-minded environment where people can share their achievements, express their concerns, and acknowledge their challenges.  It serves the Jewish community’s needs by empowering grandparents who might be questioning their role in regard to their grandchildren who are being raised in interfaith homes. But more importantly, it gives grandparents the tools to help ensure that their family’s Jewish identity is carried on for another generation.”

The program is free of charge and open to all grandparents whose grandchildren are being raised in intermarried homes.  Again, registration is required.

The Jewish Outreach Institute (JOI)—is an independent, national, trans-denominational organization reaching out to unengaged and intermarried Jewish families, and helping the organized Jewish community better welcome them in.  JOI conducts research, runs programs, and serves as a national training institution and network for outreach professionals, guiding and supporting innovative outreach in communities throughout North America.

October, 2011 – I Tried to Be Normal…

Not Your Ordinary Comic

Frannie Sheridan’s comedy has been coined Femedy. She is seen as a more feminine version of a comic who appeals equally to

men and women. Although she doesn’t shy away from sexual references, Frannie keeps crowds laughing without cursing or attack humor and has woven a gentler touch into the normally masculine dominated craft of stand-up. Her act has been described as Rita Rudner meets Richard Lewis.

Her new show I TRIED TO BE NORMAL…but it was taken! is a stand-up comedy about Frannie’s comedic struggle to feel normal despite having to deal with members of her family, most notably her analysis obsessed father who studied under Sigmund Freud. But constant analysis can actually make you feel that something is wrong with you when it isn’t, and in her case, the nonstop diagnosis was so nerve wracking to everyone and everything that even her vibrator developed Parkinsons! Some of the other colorful characters and subjects in Frannie’s show include her controlling German mother who is obsessed with telling inappropriate secrets, her sister a Food Sculptor who got her family kicked out of church, her stripper cousin, her past boyfriends, plastic surgery and Martha Stewart woven together in Frannie’s uniquely funny and clever skewed look at the world.

Some of Frannie’s past comedic performances includes the recurring role of Nefertitti on ’THE UNPROFESSIONALS’ broadcast for two seasons on The Comedy Network, Host of ‘FRANNIE’S WACKY HEALTHY COOKING SHOW’ produced by Whole Foods, and she has written for and performed for oodles of television, film, live and talk shows and spent twelve years working with legendary film director Arthur Hiller(Love Story). In addition to spreading joy and laughter through performances at Yuk Yuks, The NY Comedy Club,Wellington Amphitheater, and dozens of local comedic venues, her live performances have been pivotal in raising substantial amount of money for a slew of nonprofits and foundations.

Her past dramatic shows, The Waltonsteins(published by Blizzard/IRT’96) broadcast internationally though NPR garnered her the prestigious GABRIEL award. Her most recent show Confessions of A Jewish Shiksa, produced at The Kravis Center, the Colony in Miami and by dozens of theaters internationally has been the recipient of numerous mayoral awards and rave reviews and headlined the Lipservice Festival in Miami which will be broadcast in October on WEXL(WPBT2). www.franniesheridan.com

September, 2011 – Zero Tolerance Domestic Violence Walk

Zero Tolerance Domestic Violence Walk
In honor of Maria Aguilar on the one-week anniversary of her death from Domestic Violence

Gather at Lake Worth City Hall, 6pm, Thursday, September 8, 2011. Walk begins at 6:30 pm.

LAKE WORTH:  On Thursday, September 8, at 6:00pm, residents, elected officials and members of Maria Aguilar’s family will gather at Lake Worth City Hall to prepare to walk to the site where Maria Aguilar was shot and killed last week by her husband. The walk will be seven blocks.  While Lake Worth residents grieve her loss, Ms. Aguilar lost her life to a world-wide epidemic: Domestic Violence. Vice Mayor Suzanne Mulvehill and former Commissioner Cara Jennings organized the walk to both respect and grieve Ms. Aguilar’s death and to acknowledge that Lake Worth has Zero Tolerance for Domestic Violence. The Walk is set one week following Ms. Aguilar’s murder.

It is well documented that the most dangerous time for a victim of domestic violence is when he/she tries to leave the relationship. Ms. Aguilar was in the process of getting a restraining order when she was murdered.

Vice Mayor Suzanne Mulvehill commented, ” Each year I have been a commissioner, our community has experienced the death of residents due to domestic violence. We have Zero Tolerance for Domestic Violence.”  Vice Mayor Mulvehill established the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month in 2009, following a triple homicide in Lake Worth that stemmed from domestic violence. She will be preparing a Zero Tolerance Policy for the commission to consider and will be organizing the third annual Domestic Violence Awareness Month for October 2011. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office already has a Zero Tolerance Policy on Domestic Violence.
