April, 2011 – Wellington’s First Builder Celebrates 35 Years

Wellington’s First Builder Celebrates 35 Years in Business

Mark B. Miles, the general contractor who built the very first house in the Aero Club and many of Wellington’s first neighborhoods, celebrated his 35th year in business on April 1, 2011.

Miles was originally hired by Alcoa/Breakwater Housing in 1977 to build the communities of Hidden Landings, Hidden Pines, Tree Tops and Bedford Mews as people discovered Wellington and chose their homes from the models.

“After we remodeled the original models, they sold 60 units in 60 days and hired me to build them,” said Miles. “At the time, Wellington had only one stoplight and the nearest grocery store was at Military Trail and Forest Hill Boulevard.”

Miles continued building Wellington when Gould Florida Inc. took over from Alcoa.

“We were a grassroots neighborhood on every level,” remembers Miles. “I used to play pick-up games of polo with the guys from Gould on the field along Forest Hill Boulevard that now holds the Wellington Municipal Complex. We called it The Hubcap Open and passed a beat-up old hubcap back and forth as the trophy.”

Over the last 35 years, Miles has seen a lot of changes. His original company, Miles Construction, built over 50 new custom homes in the area as well as numerous stalls, barns and grooms’ quarters for Wellington’s fabled equestrian community. He survived the crash of the savings & loans in 1982, then morphed his company into Wellington Remodeling Inc. as the community reached build-out.

“It was interesting to find myself remodeling the very same houses I had built 25 years before,” said Miles. “But each new owner comes with their own wish list – today’s clients want bigger kitchens, specialized media rooms and master bathrooms built en suite or even two master suites.”

Miles says that mother-in-law suites are more popular than ever, with aging parents – or even kids back from college – moving in with Baby Boomers whose own retirement plans may be on hold.

“The economy has reunited families, that’s for sure,” says Miles. “People are no longer willing to shell out big bucks for assisted living facilities when a small ‘apartment’ added to their existing home is so cost-effective.”

Like many other builders in the area, Miles is looking forward to the end of the recession.

“I really don’t want to be the ‘last builder standing’ so I hope the recent reports of an economic turnaround are more than a just a panacea,” he said. “There are such great real estate deals out there right now that people can buy where they want and then remodel to get the exact amenities they want.”

Estimates, as always, are done at no charge. Call Wellington Remodeling Inc. at (561) 722-7195.

“It never hurts to talk to a professional,” concludes Miles. “We’ve seen a lot of homes over the last 35 years and we can share some great ideas with you because of it.”

Heroes in Medicine

SALUTE THE HEROES AMONG US!

Heroes are men and women who place the needs of others above self and view personal responsibility from a global perspective. The term Hero is often preceded by the adjective “unsung”, but on this day we will sing!

The Palm Beach County Medical Society Services, a non-profit organization, is hosting the 8th Annual Heroes in Medicine Awards Ceremony. These prestigious awards honor individuals, organizations, and businesses throughout Palm Beach County that use their skills and resources in the field of healthcare to provide outstanding services for the people of our local, national, and global communities. In addition to properly recognizing our Heroes in Medicine, this initiative serves to encourage and stimulate future heroes by promoting a commitment to community service.

Proceeds from this event benefit Project Access, providing healthcare for low income, uninsured residents of Palm Beach County; and the Medical Society’s medical scholarship fund. The awards will be presented at the Heroes in Medicine luncheon at the Kravis Center’s Cohen Pavilion on Wednesday, May 11, 2011. To be considered for an award, nominations must be received by March 1, 2011. If not a self nomination please inform the nominated as they may be called for clarification of the application and/or for an interview. Winners and sponsors will be recognized in a special section in On Call, the journal of Palm Beach County Medical Society and in all post event press releases. Finalists will be interviewed in person on Saturday, March 12, 2011 between 8:30 am and 12 Noon.

April, 2011 – The Easter Bunny and Tax Time

April, 2011img_9570

Dear Readers,

Happy April!  April stirs up a strange combination of occasions – April Fool’s Day, Tax Time, Earth Day and Easter. And for me, it’s stirring up something else – insomnia!  I’m grateful to our “Ask the Docs” experts for writing a very helpful article this month on the subject – thank you, Heather Loguidice!

In our AW Spotlight article, we take a look at a great fundraiser that’s happening at Village Park on April 30th – the Great Strides in Curing Cystic Fibrosis walk.  I interviewed Linda Windsor of PrePaid Legal, who has a special place in her heart for this cause. There’s still time to join her team if you’d like to – the PrePaid Legal South Florida team. The battle against Cystic Fibrosis has come a long way and many people involved in the cause believe we are getting very close to the cure!

This month poet Mary Oliver comes to town on April 9th and will do a reading of her works at Lynn University in Boca. Our “Cultural Cornerwriter Marla E. Schwartz interviewed Oliver to see what’s going on in her world of poetry and publishing.

What can you do to ease the tension when you bring a new baby home and your dogs are anxious about it?  Our “Creature Feature” writer Stephanie Karpf gives us some very helpful tips this month!

Hey Parents!  Don’t forget to check out our “Kids’ Corner” where local mom Shawn Thompson updates the “Kids Eat Free” information around our Wellington/RPB area.  It’s very helpful in this economy to keep track of which nights are freebies!

Thanks also to Shawn Thompson for taking a photo of our newbanner-wellingtonelementary2 banner, which moms and dads get to see every day while waiting in the car line to pick up their children at Wellington Elementary.  (Insert photo here)  Do you have a good place in mind for an AroundWellington.com banner or flyer?  Let me know – (editor@aroundwellington.com) and I’ll get to work!

In “Lighten Up with Lisa,” Lisa Dawn Wax asks the soul-searching questions, “Have you ever wanted something so badly you thought you would die if you didn’t get it? Have you ever wished for something for so long that your heart ached with anticipation?” She gives us a glimpse into the importance of self-worth and self-esteem with her concept (and poem) “YouTopia.”  It’s a beautiful message, so don’t miss this article.  And don’t forget that you can listen to Lisa on her weekly radio show “The Youtopia Hour” on W4CY.com Mondays at 2PM ET.

April, 2011 – YOUTOPIA

Lighten Up with Lisa

YOUTOPIA-Because personal perfection begins with YOU!

By Lisa Dawn WaxLisa Dawn Wax

I wrote the following poem several years ago in college. I think I was only 18 or 19 years old but, unbeknownst to me at the time, my innate “lightworker” wisdom was already blossoming. Ironically, or maybe not so ironically, several years later I used “Youtopia” as the name of my massage/reiki/personal training business. It seemed appropriate because I believe in a mind-body-spirit energy connection and when you honor and balance these three elements you honor yourself, and therefore can achieve personal perfection or “Youtopia.” Many more years later, bringing us to the here-and-now, I have a weekly radio show, The Youtopia Hour with Lightworker Lisa. So, I guess, you could say that I am committed to this concept of Youtopia; committed to teaching and helping others to lead healthier, happier lives; and committed to inspiring others to find their Youtopia. My personal goals also include helping my audience identify and clarify areas of stress and sources of pain, as well as to redirect negative focus into positive channels. Over the past two years I have written several columns that have focused on reaching out to you, the readers, with the intent to help you to find your true passions, your true happiness, your peace, your faith, your inner strengths, and your inner truths. I’ve shared lessons of love, compassion and gratitude. I’ve talked of relationships with others and relationships with the self. I’ve written in poetry. I’ve written in prose. I’ve narrated and I’ve scripted Q&A. With all that I’ve written, all that’s been discussed, I can’t think of that which I have NOT touched upon. This poem, I believe, brings it back full circle, to the beginning. This poem brings it back to YOU!

Have you ever wanted something so badly you thought you would die if you didn’t get it?

Have you ever wished for something for so long that your heart ached with anticipation?

Whatever it may have been, this person, place or thing meant instant and complete gratification and happiness.

Well, if so, what did you do once you got it? If, in fact, you did.

Did it mean as much as you thought it would?

Was it as perfect as it should have been?

Were you as happy as you thought you would be?

Did it give you instant life? Make your heart stop aching?

Did the Angels start singing above?

Most probably the answers are, “No,”

But if there are “Yes,”

How long did the relationship last before it fell apart?

How often did you use it before you threw it away?

Or how long did you admire the scenery before you moved?

If you stop to think about it, you’ll realize…

There is only one person who can give you meaning;

Only one place to find all that is wonderful and good;

And only one thing that can make the difference between a Utopian way of life and one lived in misery.

The person is YOU!

The place is within YOURSELF!

And the thing is your own SELF-WORTH!

Don’t be an April Fool and accept anything less than discovering the Youtopian nature of your own personal perfection. Be the best you can be and then beam with pride of the person you’ve become. When looking for love, first look within your own heart. When seeking acceptance, start by accepting yourself. Then as you radiate the glow of Youtopia and personal happiness all may bask in your glory.

Until next time, may your days be brighter and your lives be lighter.

Let me ignite the light in your life!
