2011 Challenge of the Americas Raises $275,000 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation

Wellington, FL – March 22, 2011 – The tenth annual Challenge of the Americas competition and Gala were held Saturday evening, March12, at the beautiful International Polo Club Palm Beach. Held as a benefit for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Play for P.I.N.K., the event raised approximately $275,000 in support of research to help find a cure for this disease that has affected so many lives.

The Challenge Gala got underway following an exciting evening of equestrian competition that included the first ever four-on-four polo match, where Team Vanderbilt-Ingram proved victorious.  Following polo the musical quadrille team challenge commenced with Team Purina USA earning the winning score in this fantabulous event.  This year’s gala, a sold-out affair with almost 600 in attendance, featured an evening of dinner and dancing and was held in the New Nespresso Lodge just off Piaget Field at the International Polo Club Palm Beach.  The sit-down dinner, silent auction and dancing was enjoyed by top riders, trainers and judges from the equestrian world of dressage and polo, along with generous sponsors and supporters.

Held as a benefit for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation over the last ten years, the Challenge of the Americas has raised over 1.5 million since its inception in 2002. This year they will once again add a generous donation to that total. President of Play For P.I.N.K., spoke at the Gala and acknowledged all that Challenge of the Americas has done for breast cancer research. Play For P.I.N.K. (Prevention, Immediate diagnosis, New technology, Knowledge) is a grassroots organization dedicated to raising funds to fight breast cancer, by creating and promoting awareness of breast cancer through sporting and lifestyle events. They contribute 100% of all funds raised to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Play for P.I.N.K. President Laura Lassman stated, “Thank you so much to all of you  for your generous support, which goes to fund an army of the most incredible researchers in the world.  We support 172 researchers in 12 countries and have worked to make great strides to fight this disease.  Sixteen years ago we were working to see if we could cure cancer, now we are working to figure out when!  I hope that one day soon we will have this fabulous event to celebrate the breakthrough that we have beaten this disease!”

Mary Ross, who lost her mother to breast cancer, and created the event in memory of her mother ten years ago, created the Challenge of the Americas.  She, along with a talented committee put together this fabulous event.  New to this year’s event, was a four-on-four polo match which was organized by Georgette Escobar.  Escobar, wife of 7-goal polo player Luis Escobar, is a breast cancer survivor and spoke during the event about her battle with the disease.

Escobar stood in front of the evening’s crowd with seven of her closest friends to speak about her fight.  “I stand here in front of you with seven of my closest friends to show you that one in eight woman is diagnosed with breast cancer.  I was the one of eight, and with the help of research, my cancer was detected early.  Because of such advances in technology and research, I was able to fight the disease.”  Escobar’s 91-year-old grandmother, also a breast cancer survivor, was in attendance to show her support for the cause and Escobar’s recovery.

“I also would like to thank Mary Ross for all she’s done for the fight against Breast Cancer.  She is an incredible woman and has done so much for this disease!”

Many companies and organizations came together to help support the Challenge of the Americas through their sponsorship. Generous sponsors included: The International Polo Club Palm Beach; SSG Gloves – Team Can/America; Purina Mills – Team USA; The Seley Parker Group of Merrill Lynch – Team International; Polo Sponsor: Arenus; Event Sponsors: USDF; Cunningham & Cunningham Livestock Insurance; , MatchnRide.com, Back on Track, Wellington Classic Dressage, Palm Beach Equine Clinic, Red Barn Feed & Supply, The Tackeria, Ecogold, Bethesda Women’s Health Center, Dover Saddlery, King Ferry Winery, Jamaica Tent, Boca West Country Club, EQLS and Sunbelt Rentals.

TAI CHI HEALTHY CHOICE FOR PEOPLE WITH ARTHRITIS

Arthritis Foundation Offers New Joint-Safe Activity

[W.P.B.] – For centuries, Tai Chi has been practiced in China as an effective exercise for physical and mental well-being.  Now, the Arthritis Foundation is launching a new joint-safe Tai Chi program designed to improve the quality of life for people with arthritis, as more and more people turn to alternative approaches to address chronic conditions.

Tai Chi from the Arthritis Foundation is designed for people of all ages seeking a joint-safe exercise routine, but particularly those with mild to moderate arthritis.  Research shows moderate physical activity helps people with arthritis feel better and relieves pain.  Tai Chi may be especially suitable for people with joint problems because its movements are slow and gentle, and the level of exertion can be adjusted to suit each person’s physical condition.  In addition, the movements in the style of Tai Chi used by the Arthritis Foundation are performed at higher stances, which make it easier and more comfortable to learn.

The benefits of Tai Chi may include reduced pain and stiffness, improved concentration and memory, greater balance, increased flexibility, enhanced muscle strength, along with improved ability to cope with stress and depression.

Tai Chi from the Arthritis Foundation will take place on Wednesdays & Fridays – beginner class 10:00 am, intermediate class 11:00 am  beginning April 6, 2011 at the Arthritis Foundation, 400 Hibiscus Street, West Palm Beach.   The sessions will run for 5 weeks, and the cost is $66.   All classes are taught by instructors who have undergone a special Arthritis Foundation instructor-training workshop.

To register for Tai Chi from the Arthritis Foundation or for more information, contact Susie Rhodes at 561-833-1133.

THE YWCA TAKES A STAND AGAINST RACISM
Over 250,000 individuals expected to take a Stand Against Racism

“Today, the YWCA of Palm Beach County is calling on all local organizations, corporations, churches and other houses of worship, government agencies and individuals in the county to join the YWCA by participating in the 2011 “Stand Against Racism,” taking place on Friday, April 29, announced Suzanne Turner YWCA Chief Executive Officer. “Any group of any size that believes in a society free of racism is invited to join us.”

In 2010, this event attracted over 2,000 partnering organizations across the nation that became participating sites by hosting local “Stands”. Over a quarter million individuals took a stand against racism at one of the participating sites. They committed themselves to a lifetime of promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all people in their community and in the world. This powerful, unified, effort helped to raise awareness that racism hurts everyone. Participants ranged from school-age children to elected officials, executives of large corporations, church leaders, and others. Racism affects everyone.

Any organization or group of individuals can become a participating site by signing up through the “Stand Against Racism” Web site: www.StandAgainstRacism.org., says Turner.  A participating site will host their own “Stand Against Racism” event at its individual location (which can be private or open to the public). Participation in the “Stand Against Racism” is free and becoming a participating site is very simple.  The YWCA will provide all the necessary materials and documents, including a How to Run the Event Template that can be customized to meet the organization’s needs. Each organization’s “Stand” will range from gatherings at work to larger scale “Stands” like rallies and marches. No matter what shape each “Stand” takes in each participating site, all activities will echo the theme “racism is unacceptable.” Organizations are urged to visit www.StandAgainstRacism.org to join this important movement.

The YWCA’s “Stand Against Racism” a collaboration of over 70 YWCA Associations nationwide, is an annual event managed by the YWCA Trenton and the YWCA Princeton in New Jersey. The YWCAs in America and around the world have a rich history of advocating for racial justice. Throughout its history, the YWCA has been at the forefront of most major movements in the United States as a pioneer in race relations. The YWCA with its mission to eliminate racism intends to affect real change in the lives of families, friends and co-workers through a process that identifies and eradicates the barriers that divide us and that perpetuate racism and other forms of oppression.  As individuals learn what has kept us apart, they will develop new ways of working cooperatively by creating new models of shared resources and perspectives. In October 2009, the YWCA of Palm Beach County launched the “Community Chats for Action” program consisting of 6 weeks of dialogue among persons of various races resulting in a number of recommendations for further activity in this community to help make us more united. “Stand Against Racism” was one of those selected actions.

For more details, please visit www.StandAgainstRacism.org.  For local information, please contact YWCA of Palm Beach County, 561-640-0050, Ext. 137. The YWCA of Palm Beach County seeks to bring people together across communities for one common goal—greater community unity through the elimination of racism—thus all businesses, and organizations in Palm Beach county are being asked to make their  voices heard by joining the “Stand Against Racism”.

March, 2011 – Laughing Out Loud

“Laugh Out Loud” Comedy Series Is

Infecting The Crowds With Belly Laughs

WEI Network and “Peter’s Livingroom” in conjunction with the Village of Wellington presented a comedy show Friday night, March 11th, 2011 at the new Wellington Amphitheatre along W. Forest Hill Boulevard.

The evening started with a faulty microphone and Emcee Neil Berliner asking the popular Verizon phone service question, “Can you hear me??”  Then moving a few steps and asking, “Can you hear me now???”  After a big “Yes” from the audience and some warm up jokes from Neil, the comedians started performing their acts.

Laughter echoed throughout the area as comedians (who perform at the Improv, Bonkers, NY Comedy Club, National Lampoon, and other clubs across the country) presented their acts.  They included the following: Neil Berliner (Emcee), Joe Duwayne, Teresa (Lady T) Poulos, Joey Novick, Anthony Monte, and Dougie Almeida (Headliner).

Chrissy Henley, a resident of Wellington who attended the show, was up front by the stage laughing louder than any other person in the audience.  During his act, Anthony Monte stopped, pointed to Chrissy, and said he loved her and her very loud and continuous laughter.  Chrissy stated after the show that this was her first time attending a LOL event. She also said that she was pleasantly surprised that the performance was live and not video as she had expected.

As always, there was audience participation.  Although the comedians involved in this ongoing series are used to performing to adult crowds in clubs, they still delivered much laughter for everyone. As advertised, it was a “G” to “PG” rated show that adults enjoyed as much as the kids.  The audience brought blankets and seating, plus coolers with drinks and munchies.  There was ample free parking and restrooms on the grounds.

The “Laugh Out Loud” shows are an ongoing series which occur the 2nd Friday of each month.  The next show will be Friday, April 8th, 2011 from 7:30 – 9:30 P.M.  Go to Peterslivingroom.com for more information or call Peter at 561.827.4223.  Dates are also listed on The Village of Wellington’s website. Or check back at AroundWellington.com on the Calendar page or the Press Releases page.

April, 2011 – Four Young Stars at That’s Dancing

Four Young Stars at That’s Dancing to Compete at Nationals

Highlighting Shari Mittenthal, Alec Mittenthal, Jillian Medero and Rachel Squire

By Krista Martinelli

It’s remarkable when a dance company has one of their young dancers win the state competition and go on to compete for the national title at the Dance Masters of America convention. When it happens to four dance students from the same dance studio, “it’s a once in a lifetime” event, according to co-owner of That’s Dancing Andrea LaMaina. Andrea LaMaina runs the popular dance studio with her co-owner sister Michele Walsh. This July twins Shari and Alec Mittenthal, Jillian Medero and Rachel Squire will aim for capturing the national title at Gaylord Palms in Orlando.

Training is already underway for July. “As of now, we’re pretty thick into our competition season,” says LaMaina. The students are constantly training in their various technique classes. They also add onto their group lessons with private lessons. All four students are also active in the dance company that rehearses at That’s Dancing for three hours each Saturday afternoon, Fusion Force Dance Company. The four star students go to Nationals in July, and the action-packed competition will last an entire week. Dance Masters hires a choreographer to come in and rehearse a big grand opening number with all of the participants. The young dancers get exposure to many different nationally-renowned teachers and their different styles. To say the least, “it’s a very busy week,” explains LaMaina.

4starsShari Mittenthal, 9, was crowned Petite Miss Dance of Florida 2011, after impressing the judges with her lyrical dance solo.  Her brother Alec Mittenthal, 9, was awarded Petite Mister Dance of Florida 2011 after his terrific tap solo.  He also won a Junior Tap scholarship. Shari and Alec are twins who attend Sunset Palms Elementary School in Boynton Beach.  This year’s state competition took place in Cape Coral. The dancers must submit a resume and also go through an interview, in which they are asked questions based on their resumes. Shari and Alec both scored the highest in their category for dancers twelve years old and under.

Jillian Medero was Mini Miss Dance of FL in 2005; now at fifteen she’s Teen Miss Dance for FL.

Jillian Medero as Mini Miss Dance of FL in 2005 and as Teen Miss Dance of FL in 2011.

She found an old photo of herself from her days as “Mini Miss” and put it next to her recent Teen Miss photo on the That’s Dancing Facebook page. She currently attends Dreyfoos School of the arts and performed a contemporary lyrical piece in the state competition. “She’s been my student for 13 years.  She’s the definition of dedication. She’s young and talented,” says Andrea LaMaina. Jillian won the overall scholarship for the senior division – in jazz, ballet tap and acrobatics class.

Rachel Squire, a senior at Dreyfoos, performed a contemporary lyrical piece to win the state championship title. “She’s another dancer who’s been with us forever and ever,” says LaMaina. She was crowned Senior Miss Dance of Florida and was also awarded the overall ballet scholarship. She plans to attend Marymount Manhattan College in N.Y.C. on a dance scholarship.

Dance Masters of America, which is over 100 years old, is considered to be one of the best dance competitions in the country. It’s a non-profit organization that truly gives back to students who excel. There’s an entry fee at the state competitions, but those entry fees are used to pay the winning students’ entry fees at Nationals. “They hire fantastic teachers at Dance Masters. At the end of the day, it’s a learning experience. It’s all about education – more so than winning,” says LaMaina.

It’s the same way at That’s Dancing, which is located at Lantana and Jog Road in Lake Worth. The teachers strive to give their students the tools, confidence and encouragement they need. They push their young dancers to their potential. Andrea LaMaina, who happened to choreograph all four of the winning dance routines at the state competition this year, says “The bottom line is that it comes from within. You’re not going to convince anyone else that you’re good if you don’t believe you’re good.” She jokes that she would love to take credit for her students’ successes, but it ultimately comes from the dancers themselves. LaMaina, Walsh and the other dance instructors are just happy to be a part of each dancer’s journey.

If you’d like to see these four rising dance stars perform, your best bet is this June at the That’s Dancing gala at Royal Palm Beach High School. Call That’s Dancing for showtimes and tickets at (561) 642-9677.
