An Old Fashioned Downtown Patriotic Explosion

Pie Baking Contest

 

Downtown Lake Worth will be exploding with activity during the entire Fourth of July Weekend.  On July 3rd, the Downtown Cultural Alliance Merchant Association will be taking over the Lake and Lucerne sidewalks and side streets “J”, “K” and “L” and “M” for a full day of old fashioned family fun.  Restaurants and Merchants are offering patriotic sidewalk sales all day. The festivities will take place Sunday from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

The Second Annual Pie Baking Contest will take place on July 3rd at 2:00 PM.  The contest will be judged by four of Lake Worth’s top celebrity Chefs, all of whom prepare some of the most delicious food in the state.  The judges are Chef Angelo Romano, The Paradiso Ristorante, Chef Chrissy Benoit, Havana Hideout, Chef Joseph Angelucci, South Shore Tavern and Patio Bar and Pastry Chef Eric Regnier of La Bonne Bouche.

 

Pie entrys must be registered in advance with Michelle Belle of 531 East Inc., 561-249-2524.  All pies will be accepted for the celebrity judges.  The pies must be delivered to 515 Lake Avenue by 10:00 AM on the morning of the 3rd of July.  They will be stored at Nature’s Way Cafe until the judgement hour.

 

Prizes will be awarded the top winners.  The pies will then be sold for charity. For additional information contact Michelle Bell at 561-249-2524.

Award-Winning Product for Infants from Local Moms

 

Two local moms are named TOP 50 MOMPRENUERS of 2011 according to Babble.com, a well known website for parents!  Caroline Epstein and Carrie Garramone created an award-winning infant product, Time to Play Baby- A Year of Baby Classes in a Box!  
 
Time to Play Baby has also been awarded the iParenting Media Award and the MOMS Best Award!  Both of these selective awards strive to provide the “best” products available today on the market for prenatal, infant, toddler, children, tweens, teens, and for dads, and grandparents. 
 
Caroline is a former Palm Beach County teacher.  Carrie is a realtor at Coldwell Banker- Wellington.  When having their children they encountered the challenges of attending mommy and baby classes because of inconvenient class times or no accommodations for older children while the moms were in the class with infants.  Caroline and Carrie were determined to create a program that allowed all parents to enjoy the benefits of developmental play sessions in the convenience of their own homes.  Whether mom has to work outside the home, can’t afford the classes, has multiple children or has a caregiver to use, Time to Play Baby is a great alternative to those traditional Mommy and Me Classes.  Their goal is help families save time, money and stress.

Roving Bird Naturalist

Every Friday

A refuge volunteer birder will be walking the Marsh Trail with a spotting scope ready to answer any bird question visitors might have.

 Dragonfly Talk

Every Sunday

Come join a refuge volunteer naturalist in the air-conditioned theater of the visitor center to hear a presentation on our amazing summer residents, the dragonflies.    

 

The refuge is located off U.S. 441/SR 7, two miles south of SR 804 (Boynton Beach Blvd.) and three

 

miles north of SR 806 (Delray Beach’s Atlantic Avenue).  The refuge is currently open from 6 am to 8:30 pm, seven days a week.  Refuge hours change seasonally and are posted at each entrance.  The Visitor Center hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., seven days a week.  An entrance fee of $5.00 per vehicle or $1.00 per pedestrian is charged.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the principal Federal agency responsible for conserving, protecting, an enhancing fish and wildlife habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.  The Service manages the 150-million-acre

National Wildlife Refuge System comprised of over 553 national wildlife refuges,

thousands of small wetlands, and other special management areas.  It also

operates 70 national fish hatcheries, 64 fish and wildlife management offices,

and 78 ecological services field stations.  The agency enforces Federal wildlife

laws, administers the Endangered Species Act, manages migratory bird

populations, restores nationally significant fisheries, conserves and restores

wildlife habitat such as wetlands, and helps foreign governments with their

conservation efforts.  It also oversees the Federal Aid program that distributes

hundreds of millions of dollars in excise taxes on fishing and hunting equipment

Part II – The Gals

A new wave of artists has invaded Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery bringing with them Down to Earth works that reflect Florida’s abundance of vegetation and wildlife.  The Guys and the Gals create works that show strength of design and skill that has already attracted an appreciative audience.  The work is both decorative and functional.  This allows for patrons to live with and use “one of a kind” art creations as part of their daily routine.  Part II- The Gals takes place on Friday evening, June 17 from 6-9 PM at Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery, 605 Lake Avenue in Downtown Lake Worth.  There will be a wine and cheese reception.  

 

Lake Worth artist Lee Mortensen has recently moved around the corner from the gallery. For many years she had a successful gallery business in Key West.  Her finely made stained glass creations, mosaics, panels, suncatchers and architectural installations are now prominent in Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery. She loves the way different types of glass react with each other. Sometimes glass combinations alone inspire a design.” Being a bit of a perfectionist”… some of her bright colorful sea life and nautical pieces can take 3 to 4 months to complete to her satisfaction.

 

Boca Raton artist Mary Catello and Boynton Beach artist Teri Salomni are a mother-daughter team who collaborate on sculptures and basketry woven from the leaves, grasses, reeds and the many gifts nature abundantly discards during its growing process.  Adding to their creations are wooden finials created by wood turner Teri. Mary began to experiment with local plants and trees that could be transformed into art.  The material, the preparation and the art form have made Mary acutely aware of the green movement to save the planet. With each woven sculpture she hopes to pass along a “think green” message.  Teri became inspired by her mother’s passion for weaving sculptures from natural resources found locally. She embraced this new medium and start creating her own sculptures. “It’s great when someone says they love my sculptures and I can say it’s created from palm fronds found in your yard. I love working on this project with my Mom.”

Lake Worth Artist Kathleen Kirschner also uses nature’s discards as her found objects in creating wonderful whimsical sculptures which she displays alongside her brother Rick Cohen’s works.  Her swans, lizards and hybrid creatures have been snapped up by afficianados of her designs.  Kathleen’s paintings on silk hang in the gallery.  A talented seamstress and designer, Kathleen will be bringing a line of Art Clothing to the gallery in the near future.  With her brother Rick, Kathleen vocalizes and harmonizes showing off another side of her multi-faceted talents.

Boynton Beach artist Madeline Gallo brings yet another aspect of ceramic sculpture to the gallery.  From monumental lawn sculptures to ceremonial wall hangings Madeline uses a red clay base that she selectively glazes.  A veteran of decades of cooperative galleries Madeline’s works reflect another aspect of the earthy talents of all of the newest gallery artists.  The figurative sculptures invite both indoor and outdoor settings; many require group installations.  They are reflective of the larger megaliths of the ancients as well as an accompaniment to the grasses, reeds and toadstools that spring from the earth.

Lake Worth artist Rick Cohen creates Grandfather Clocks, tables, mirrors and a wide variety of exquisite furnishings and décor from Sticks and Stones, the title of his production company.  Working with his sister Kathleen (Featured in two weeks), their spot in the gallery became immediately popular with a flurry of sales.  New works appear weekly.  Rick is a talented musician playing venues throughout the county.  His virtuosity on the mandolin is called upon as back-up for many local artists.  Rick hosts a Jam Session at the gallery for acoustic folk artists every second and fourth Mondays from 7-10 PM. 

 

West Palm Beach artist Mark Banfield is a wood turned extraordinaire.  He painstakingly pieces a variety of woods together into intricate patterns that appear when the works are turned and shaped on a lathe.  Some of his creations contain as many as 2000 pieces.  These works compete with those made from burls and pieces found on the side of the road.  From these oddly shaped discards come some of his most impressive, sensual works.  Included in his collection are a variety of vases, bowls, time pieces, some monumental in size and others delicately small and compact.

 

In two weeks, June 17, the larger invasion of Part II-The Gals will take place in the gallery.

INFOCUS:

The Palm Beach Photographic Centre’s 15th annual INFOCUS Juried Show will showcase the work of its student members, both inside the Photo Centre and on its Web site, www.workshop.org.  A Best of Show cash prize of $950 will be awarded, as will two Merit Awards for free tuition for a FOTOfusion Passport or a Master Workshop.

The INFOCUS Juror is Kevin Ames, who’s career has included commercial photography, writing books on photographing women, Photoshop and Lightroom, a column (the Digital Photographer’s Notebook) in Photoshop User magazine, teaching engagements through the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. At his studio in Atlanta, Ames works with clients like A.T.&T., Westin Hotels and Honda Power Equipment. His work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Jezebel, Atlanta Sports and Fitness as well as on corporate websites, brochures and capabilities programs. He is currently writing Faces: A Digital Retoucher’s Guide to Photoshop.

 

PICTURE MY WORLD:

Since September 1997, the Palm Beach Photographic Centre’s PICTURE MY WORLD Program has served disadvantaged children, ages 8 – 17, including some students who are under the supervision of the legal system due to abuse, neglect or abandonment. This program teaches an appreciation of family and community, the development of self-esteem, nonviolent means of express and personal responsibility.

PICTURE MY WORLD uses photography exploration combined with strategic journal writing curriculums to promote problem solving skills, and insight into community interaction by creating awareness for each student that they are valued and their voice can make a positive difference in the their lives and the lives of others. In fact, program outcomes have shown that the controlled and directed use of photography and journal writing provides numerous therapeutic, social and career benefits, as well as helping these children to develop positive means of expression while improving academic skills.

Now running through June 18 at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre is PROJECT TANDEM: Two Bicycles, Two Photographers, One 11,000-Mile Ride, with photographs by Morrigan McCarthy and Alan Winslow.

A 50-Pounder Catches a 46-Pounder

 

Ethan Govier begged his dad Brian to take him on one ofethan-kingfish1 his many fishing expeditions. June 4th aboard the Blue Heron II www.blueheronfishing.com out of Jupiter Florida turned out to be the day for him! Ethan only 8 years old weighing in at 50 LBS caught this monster 46 LB. Smoker King Fish. The fight lasted 30 minutes as Ethan struggled with his rod and reel only loaded with 25 LB test line. Finally after several attempts Ethan with the help of the captain land this fish on the boat. The day was as perfect as you could imagine especially when the King fish made it to the smoker for some good eating!

Mounts Botanical Garden to Host Tropical Fruit Festival, Workshops on Backyard Vegetable Gardens, Bromeliads & Orchid Care, Evening Garden Walk and Digital Photography Judging During June & July

 

(West Palm Beach, FL – May 31, 2011)  The Friends of Mounts Botanical Garden today announced three major public events in June and July 2011:
 
Farm-Your-Backyard Vegetable Garden
Saturday, June 4 – 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Members $30, Non-members $40

Now is the time to begin planning a vegetable garden. Mounts Horticulturist Mike Page and Arthur Kirstein, Coordinator of Agricultural Economic Development, will teach this hands-on workshop on how to successfully grow vegetables. The focus of the program is on establishing and managing small vegetable projects, with helpful tips on site preparation, seedling establishment, planting, maintenance and harvesting will be covered. Register early, because this popular workshop has sold out quickly in the past.

 

Tropical Fruit Festival
Saturday, June 25 – 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Admission FREE for members of Mounts and Palm Beach Chapter of the Rare Fruit Council International; $5 for nonmembers

The Tropical Fruit Festival will include special cooking demonstrations by Chef Allen Susser, recipient of the coveted James Beard Award as Best Chef in the Southeast and the author of several best-selling cookbooks; a Tropical Fruit Display by Gene Joyner and Fruitscaping lecture by Dr. Jonathan Crane; tropical fruit samples (limited to the first 500 attendees), plus fruit and fruit trees available for purchase. The Tropical Fruit Festival at Mounts Botanical garden is made possible by the generous support of the Marge & Fritz Bell Tropical Fruit Project.

 

Evening Walk with the Director
Wednesday, July 13 – 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Members FREE, Non-members $5

Enjoy the beauty of Mounts Botanical Garden in the early evening hours.  Garden Director Allen Sistrunk will share information about the Garden’s history and future vision, plus stories of folklore and ethnobotanical uses of South Florida plants. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the evening fragrances of exotic flowers. Meet at the front entrance of Mounts.

 

Versatile Bromeliads
Saturday, July 16 – 9 a.m. to Noon
Exhibit Hall A
Members $30, Non-members $40

Hosted by Jeff Hutchinson and Joe Libertucci of The Bromeliad Society of the Palm Beaches, this popular workshop returns to discuss the basics of bromeliad culture and focus on the plant’s natural, epiphytic tendencies. This program will show how easy and fun it is to be creative with bromeliads and how they complement any garden situation. There will be demonstrations of various mounting techniques using driftwood, trees and rocks, plus the use of containers will be shown. Each attendee will receive a special bromeliad and rare and unusual plants will be available for purchase.

 

6th Annual Digital Photography Judging
Sunday, July – 1 p.m.
Exhibit Hall
Members FREE, Non-members FREE

All of the entries from the photography contest will be projected and commented upon by the Judges, who will collectively choose the best five entries in each of five categories: Scenics, Animal Life, Plant Life, People and Nature Close-Ups.  The judges will also select a Best-in-Show winner.


Orchid Care 101
Saturday, July 30 – 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Mounts Auditorium
Members $30, Non-members $40

Workshop instructors Tom Wells and Sandi Jones of Broward Orchid Supply will explain what orchids need in regard to water, light, fertilizer and temperature. Attendees are encouraged to bring an orchid (up to 6 inches) to be repotted or mounted. Several methods will be demonstrated such as potting and mounting on tree fern, cork bark or grapevine. Orchid supplies will be available for purchase.

 

About Mounts Botanical Garden:

Mounts Botanical Garden is Palm Beach County’s oldest and largest public garden.  Mounts displays tropical and subtropical plants from around the world, including plants native to Florida, exotic trees, tropical fruit, herbs, citrus, palms and more. As a component of the Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Service, and through its affiliation with the University of Florida, Mounts is the place to connect with Extension Horticulturists, Master Gardeners, the Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Program, and professional horticultural advisors. Mounts also offers a variety of horticultural classes, and garden-related events and workshops. 

 

Located at 531 North Military Trail in West Palm Beach, Mounts Botanical Garden is open Monday-Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. The suggested donation for entry to the Garden is $5 per person. In “Cultural Corner,” writer Marla E. Schwartz gets up close and personal with award-winning actress Sharon Gless of “Burn Notice.”  Speaking of acting and the world of theater, there are a couple of special theater events not to be missed in June – Lisa Loeb’s “Camp Kappawanna,” a children’s musical and City Theatre’s “Summer Shorts.”  We’re giving away tickets to both of these to a couple of lucky contest winners! 

 

Thanks to Shawn Thompson for her helpful updates to “Kids’ Corner” and the “Kids Eat FREE” scene Around Wellington!  This month we’ve added a couple of fun things – the schedule of summer kids’ movies at the Wellington Marketplace theater and a little home video of creating your own rocket out of a 2-liter bottle.  OK, something for everyone!

 

And why must we always accept plastic bags, even if we are perfectly willing to walk away “bag-less” after a store transaction?  That’s what Bryan Hayes wants to know in “Living Green” this month.
