karolacrawford2ASTROLOGY AT WORK IN YOUR LIFE

February, 2011

By Karola Crawford

Happy Birthday to Aquarius.  Some may call you the Super Sign of the Zodiac as you are a fixed air sign.  You are all about friendships and relationships with groups of people, and hopes, dreams, goals and objectives are foremost in your life.  You are a humanitarian and will break the rules that need to be broken in order to create new advancements for the betterment of mankind.  Some may call you the rebel of the signs for you cannot be held back by any force when you feel the need for action.  Your ruler is Uranus, which is known for its sudden, exciting, unpredictable and restless nature.  You have the ability to persist in a single minded determination and are very resourceful.  Aquarius is very intellectual and you can present what you believe to be the truth to the public.  You are also very independent, eccentric, friendly, impulsive, rebellious, magnetic and strong-willed.  Born under this sign, you pour out to mankind the life-force and spiritual energy under the sign of brotherhood and those whom you befriend have your unswerving loyalty.  Some will see that you are “ahead of your time” and you may find that others are frequently incapable of comprehending your ideas, which will probably annoy you.  You enjoy meeting people and exchanging ideas.

This is a good month to put extra energy into your love life and create a unique experience for Valentine’s Day.  Since you don’t follow the examples shown by others, let your creativity conjure up a once-in-a-lifetime experience that only a Kodak moment will preserve.  Enjoy yourself and give your body and mind a much-needed rest by indulging in a massage and relaxing with friends.  Since you take your work so seriously, nervousness and apprehension can leave you feeling worn out so take full advantage of a luxurious break.

Pisces – Life continues to be unpredictable and your sensitive nature reacts responsively to the thoughts and feelings of others.  You desperately want to do the right thing….Hang in there.  Sometimes you have to go on faith alone.   See what you want now without any objections.

Aries – You are finding new ways to use your creative energy.  Can you be the inspiration for a special Valentine’s Day that you will remember for years to come.  You know that it’s not real if you don’t get to talk about it.

Taurus – Only you know that working with the practical aspects of life will give you spiritual truth.  Focus your attention on those close at hand and recognize the value of sharing with others.  A special someone loves your devotion.

Gemini – All that thinking requires an outlet and you have it.  Remember to keep your words positive and stay in the moment.  Quiet meditation will do wonders on finding ways to give your ideas wheels..

Cancer – Major changes are occurring, however, you have sensed this for a long time now.  The changes made will be permanent, so gear up by letting go and stop controlling the outcome.

Leo – Your desire to be first is rewarded by your generosity and nobility of feelings.  There are still issues that seem foggy, but they will soon become crystal clear.  You love romance, so take advantage of a special night with that significant other.

Virgo – You have changed so many things in your life now that it doesn’t seem that anything else could be turned topsy-turvy.  Create magic on Valentine’s Day by letting your sentimental creativity out.

Libra – Your desire to initiate activities will pay off.  Don’t compromise any principles to gain recognition and you will see results.  Organization is the key to all events and it will pay off to listen to that mentor.

Scorpio – Your incredible energy will pay off if you use the high road.  You know how to make a special night, so take your honey on a special ride for Valentine’s Day.  None can compete with your intensity so start planning.

Sagittarius – Action is the name of the game as your Ruler is energized by Mars.  You have been holding back, waiting, but now your time has come.  Things will come together and move forward, and you have your choice of where to spend your Valentine’s Day.  There are no wrong choices.

Capricorn – Life may be on hold for a bit this month so keep planning, but don’t expect action until later.  Remember, when one door closes, another one opens up.  Valentine’s Day will hold a surprise.

Sexual Dysfunction in Men and Women

By Vanessa Vizcaino, M.D.

What better way to introduce this topic than to add it to the February issue for Valentine’s Day? Sexual dysfunction or sexual problems are defined as difficulty during any stage (desire, arousal, orgasm, and resolution) of the sexual act, which prevents the individual or couple from enjoying sexual activity.  I know there are many questions about libido, orgasms, and sexual function in general, because both my male and female patients of all adult ages ask me on a daily basis. People are often embarrassed to ask questions regarding sex for obvious reasons. I am here to tell you all not to be embarrassed! Sexuality and sex is a major part of adult life, and even as we age, it is important to address the issues that come up.

In a JAMA article from 1999 in a survey of men and women aged 18 – 59 years, about 43 percent of women and 31 percent of men reported some sexual problem. I suspect the numbers haven’t changed much. I found a list on Discovery Health with the following little-known facts (mostly about women):

  1. About 10 percent of women have never had an orgasm.
  2. Painful intercourse has been experienced by almost two out of three women at some time in their lives.
  3. It is common for breast-feeding women to have inadequate vaginal lubrication.
  4. About 15 percent of postmenopausal women experience a decrease in their sexual desire.
  5. The success rate for women’s orgasmic dysfunction treatment by sex therapists tends to range from 65 percent to 85 percent.
  6. About 22 percent of women experience low sexual desire (compared to 5 percent of men).
  7. Some 21 percent of men experience premature ejaculation.
  8. A woman’s level of androgen (a hormone that develops and maintains masculine characteristics) typically falls 50 percent during and after menopause (but it’s unclear whether the drop translates into decreased sex drive in a large percentage of women).

As far as men are concerned, many think the “little blue pill” can fix anything that occurs in this department. This is of course a myth, and any man that has had this problem can attest to this fact. This is mostly because sexual problems can come from physical or psychological issues, and sometimes both. Many chronic illnesses and the medications used to treat them can cause sexual dysfunction at any stage. Sometimes, despite having no physical problems, men simply have a hard time. Emotional factors affecting sex include both interpersonal problems and psychological problems within the individual. Interpersonal problems include marital or relationship problems, or lack of trust and open communication between partners. Personal psychological problems include depression, sexual fears or guilt, or past sexual trauma. These of course can affect women as well, and often contribute to more of the problem with young women than any other physical issue.

Women are often more emotional and we have a hard time separating the sexual act from the emotional component of the relationship. Let’s face it, how often has a couple been at odds over an issue or fight? And even though the man is willing and able to overlook that in order to get sex, the woman just can’t bring herself to get intimate. As with everything, there are exceptions to this, but from clinical experience I can tell you this is often a source of discord in many relationships. I like to refer my patients to counselors or therapists to work on their emotional barriers and issues in order to experience a better sex life. Simple, open, accurate, and supportive education about sex and sexual behaviors or responses may be all that is required in many cases. Some couples may benefit from joint counseling to address interpersonal issues and communication styles. Psychotherapy may be required to address anxieties, fears, inhibitions, or poor body image.

Physical issues also contribute to sexual dysfunction. Some of these include:

·         Injuries to the back (typically the lumbar and sacral spine)

·         An enlarged prostate gland

·         Disease (diabetic neuropathy, multiple sclerosis, tumors, and, rarely, tertiary syphilis)

·         Drugs, such as alcohol, nicotine, narcotics, stimulants, antihypertensives (medicines that lower blood pressure), antihistamines, and some psychotherapeutic drugs (used to treat psychological problems such as depression)

·         Endocrine disorders (thyroid, pituitary, or adrenal gland problems)

·         Failure of various organs (such as the heart and lungs)

·         Hormonal deficiencies (low testosterone, estrogen, or androgens)

·         Nerve damage (as in spinal cord injuries)

·         Problems with blood supply

·         Some birth defects

Treatment exists for sexual dysfunction no matter the cause. Depending on the cause, some issues are easier to fix than others. For people with nerve damage and severe psychological trauma, treatments are not always effective. Listed below are some common treatments:

– Medical causes that are reversible or treatable are usually managed medically or surgically. Physical therapy and mechanical aides may prove helpful for some people experiencing sexual dysfunction due to physical illnesses or disabilities.

-Sildenafil (Viagra) or one of the other drug variations may be helpful for men who have difficulty attaining and keeping an erection. The medication increases blood flow to the penis. Men who take nitrates for coronary heart disease should not take these drugs.

-Mechanical aids and penile implants are an option for men who cannot attain an erection and find the above medications are not helpful.

-Women with vaginal dryness may be helped with lubricating gels, hormone creams, and in cases of premenopausal or menopausal women, with hormone replacement therapy. In some cases, women with androgen deficiency can be helped by taking testosterone. Kegel exercises may also increase blood flow to the vulvar/vaginal tissues, as well as strengthen the muscles involved in orgasm.

-Behavioral treatments involve many different techniques to treat problems associated with orgasm and sexual arousal disorders. Self-stimulation and the Masters and Johnson treatment strategies are among the many behavioral therapies used. ( http://masters-johnson-method.com)

I hope you all find this helpful and I encourage anyone with these issues to seek help. I believe sex is a crucial part of adult life and it is an integral part of romantic relationships. Make time for it, be open to new techniques and ideas and more importantly, ENJOY IT!

Have a wonderful, fun and exciting Valentine’s Day!

February, 2011 – Valentine’s Ideas and More

February, 2011

Dear Around Wellington Readers,

Happy February and Happy Valentine’s Day!krista-joe-tree2

We have quite a few articles that touch upon themes of Valentine’s, romance and sweet things to do!  If you’re willing to travel and make it an extra-sweet Valentine’s Day, check out “Travel with Terri” this month.  From Chicago Chocolate Tours to Max Brenner’s Chocolate Restaurant in NYC to chocolate-covered February in Hershey, PA – Terri Marshall gives us the full decadent chocolate report. And she should know, since she is also the chocolate expert over at Examiner.com.

Speaking of chocolate, our “Visiting Vet” Stephanie Karpf discusses the potential problems for dogs that occur when they accidentally get into a box of chocolates. Do you know which chocolate is more toxic and which chocolate is milder for them?  To understand more of the toxic chocolate issue, read her “Creature Feature” this month.

For some people, roses are the best gift on Valentine’s Day. However, our advice columnist Dr. Z responds to one woman who just doesn’t care for roses. She has some wise words for the “Rose Rebel,” which might come in handy for any couple who has trouble knowing how to communicate better and understand each other’s needs better.

Dr. Lesley Glover, Dr. Vanessa Vizcaino and Heather Loguidice, ARNP

In our “AW Spotlight” story, we feature Family Medical and Wellness Center, which includes the terrific team of Dr. Lesley Glover, Dr. Vanessa Vizcaino and Heather Loguidice, ARNP. What’s new in the world of Family Medical and Wellness Center? First is the addition of Heather Loguidice, who has been a great help to patients and a great fit for their team. Second is their new, more convenient location – in one of the professional offices right behind Wellington Regional Medical Center. By the way, Dr. Vizcaino takes a turn at writing “Ask the Docs” this month and gives some excellent advice on the subject of sexual dysfunction in men and women…just in time for Valentine’s Day.

This month Wendell Abern in “Cantankerously Yours” takes us on a trip down a memory lane of Jewish humor and linguistics, as he delves into “Hebonics” (Jewish English). In this funny and original piece, he reminds us of the roots of Jewish humor and what makes Jewish comedians sometimes so extra funny.

Hey Parents!  Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone keep track of which restaurants offer “Kids Eat Free” nights around Wellington and Royal Palm Beach?  Local Mom Shawn Thompson has been doing just that for us in “Kids’ Corner” and updating it each month. Check it out and save, save, save!!!

When reading “Lighten Up with Lisa” I continue to learn new things and to get inspiration. This month she introduces a concept which was new to me, Munay-Ki, which means “Love Energy.”  It’s a method of healing and of communication; Lisa Dawn Wax shares it with us as her Valentine’s gift to our readers.

Thanks to Jathy Garcia in “Living Green” this month, we have a great list of “Top Green Bathroom Tips for 2011.” These are excellent ideas for your own health and for the overall health of our environment, including a “recipe for non-toxic bathtub cleaner.”

I love our “Teen Talk” writer’s column this month – “Roses are Red, Money is Green.” Stephanie Courtois, who seems wise beyond her years, gives us a nice dose of reality, as well as a beautiful message when it comes to gift-giving on Valentine’s Day.

Don’t forget to enter our easy Contest, which runs from Feb. 1st – 10th! The winner will receive a one-hour massage at Massage Envy in Royal Palm Beach!

Thanks to our AroundWellington® writers who make every month so special!  I can never cover enough ground in these letters from the editor, so just consider it a starting point…with so much more good content to explore.  And thanks to you, our readers, for your valuable input!

Happy Valentine’s Day to you!  Hope it’s a sweet one!  THANKS again to our intern Damon Webb for all of his hard work on helping with this February issue. And thanks to my husband (pictured above with me…in an old photo), who helps so much each month – with accounting, HTML and other jobs that I am not well-suited for.  That’s why we are a great pair!  Isn’t it romantic?

February, 2011 – Ask Dr. Z

Ask Dr. ZLaura Zipris

February, 2011

By Laura Zipris, Psy. D., LMHC

Dear Dr. Z.,

Is it wrong to say that I hate roses?  My husband brings me flowers only one time a year on Valentine’s Day.  For years I have feigned joy and excitement about the dreaded bouquet but I fear that I may not be able to keep up this act much longer.  Not only do I find the purchase a waste of our hard earned money, but I view it as an obligatory gesture and a cop out.  The gift actually makes me angry, but I say nothing to him because I do not want to discourage his one attempt at romance.

Signed,

The Rose Rebel

Dear Rose Rebel,

I am very clear about what it is that you do not want from your husband on Valentine’s Day but you haven’t stated what it is that you DO want.  This is an all too familiar scenario between couples.  In relationships we often assume that our partner’s “SHOULD” know what we like, dislike, want, or desire yet we fail to mention it all to them.   We are then left feeling disappointed when they “fail us”.  In your case, not only have you not expressed your feelings, but you have actually been reinforcing the wrong message (which will only ensure that you receive the “dreaded roses”).  Here is a news flash: “YOUR PARTNER CANNOT READ YOUR MIND!”   It may be your belief that if you tell your husband how he can best demonstrate his love to you then the act itself will become less romantic or hold less meaning.  This is just simply not true!   It is quite romantic to know that your partner wants to please you!   You are doing your relationship a disservice to keep your husband in the dark about your feelings, as you are not honoring his efforts and you are not getting what it is that you ultimately want.

I suggest that you and your husband work on “A Loving Behaviors Checklist.“   Think about which caring behaviors your partner does now, used to do, or has never done that would make you feel loved.   Then exchange your lists so that you will both know exactly how to hit your partners “love button.”  View this checklist as a blueprint on how to unconditionally “gift” one another with meaningful acts that are sure to hit the mark.    May this be the Happiest Valentine’s Day yet!

Signed,

Dr. Z

Lighten Up with LisaLisa Dawn Wax

This Valentine’s Day I Share with you the Love and Light of the Munay-Ki

By Lisa Dawn Wax

Dear Readers,

I just recently took a three-day workshop to further my spiritual learning and understanding. It was a sacred journey of transformation where I learned not only additional ways to heal myself, but to heal others. It was a true gift that I would like to share with you for Valentine’s Day.

Until now all of my spiritual learning as a lightworker has come from various religious teachings, angelic messages and my reiki studies, but this workshop ventured into a new arena for me, Shamanism. Deeper study revealed that by definition, shaminism is an anthropoloigcal term referencing a range of beliefs and pracitices regarding communication with the spirit world. So, in truth, a shaman and a lightworker are one in the same; both being guided by Divine Spirit to help and heal others. Shamanism encompasses many different cultures globally just as religion, but all stem from and lead back to a Divine Source.

I received my introduction to the shamanic way via the Munay-Ki, which are a series of 9 rites of initiation common to the shamanic tradition for someone who wishes to become a person of wisdom and power. Ki, as in Reiki, means Energy. Munay means Love. So true to my divine purpose as a Lightworker and as in most of my columns, I am once again talking about a love energy derived from a divine source that has the power to unify and heal. Although the Munay-Ki rites are fairly new and non- traditional and seem non-traditional, they are based upon the traditions of the Laika, or Light People, who now live in the Andes mountains of Peru but originated some 30,000 years ago when they emigrated from Siberia. Thus, the foundation for these rites of passage have been around for millenium.

Each rite attunement is a transmission of an energetic seed  transferred via a shaman’s loving intention into your luminous energy field with the purpose to heal and transform all past physical and psychological traumas imprinted within your energy field, so that emotional healing can begin. The rites also connect you to a lineage of  luminous beings, past and present, as well a lineage of master healers, archangels and 7 specific Archetypes which are transmitted into each major chakra. These Archetypes are organizing principles of the Universe, so that we may begin to organize our own energy centers and lives with specific purpose. A few examples are:

A.     The Serpent, representative of healing, who teaches us to shed our personal past as a snake sheds her skin and connects us to the primary feminine life force who knows the way into the deepest places inside of ourselves and seeks union and creation.

B.      The Jaguar, representative of transformation, who teaches us to step beyond fear and death and into a world of mystery and connects us with our Luminous Warrior who has no enemies in this world or the next and who can regain hope and bring new balance from chaos.

C.     The Hummingbird, represents courage required to embark on an epic journey, who teaches us to enjoy the sweetness of Life and that we can accomplish even the most impossible task despite tremendous odds. She reminds us to live in the moment and that Life is what it is.

D.     The Condor or Eagle, represents the self-transcending principle, who teaches us to see from a higher perspective of vision, clarity and beauty and to see with the eyes of the heart and spread our own wings so that we may fly with Great Spirit. The energies of the Eagle help us to find the guiding vision of our lives and rise above the trivial day to day struggles. The energies of the Condor help us to see into the past and future so that we know not only where we come from, but where we are going.

Upon receiving the Munay-Ki our chakras (the body’s energy centers) become cleansed so that we may attain what the Laika call a “rainbow body” and we may radiate and emit the colors of the rainbow. This allows higher luminous beings to reach out to us and recognize that we share a common calling. Furthermore, it enables us to step into the ultimate Homo Luminous state, an energy state common to that of Angels and Divine Spirit; however,  we must first shed our old patterns, not reinforce our past, and walk with an open heart, so that we may step into whom we are becoming and whom we see ourselves as being in the future.

Of course, there is quite a bit more to learn from the Munay-Ki. More than can be learned over a weekend and more than I can put into 1000 words. However, at the end of the day what we were taught over the weekend  was to be authentic and always operate from a place of Spirit. Again, this is similar to my past Lightworker lessons of being compassionate and living in alignment with your True Self, Higher Spirit and feeling the Oneness of all life. For me the Munay-Ki are just another method of communication with Divine Spirit. Just as in this world we have a landline, a cellphone, email and Skype; similarly there is more than one way to communicate in the Universe with Spirit. Thus, my Valentine’s Day gift is to inspire you to connect with Spirit and further your own develoment of your own personal spiritual growth.

Until next time, may your days be brighter and your lives be lighter.

Lightworker Lisa

Let me ignite the light in your life!

Sweets for your Sweetie

By Terri MarshallTerri Farris

Last year on Valentine’s Day my beau and I were driving through Texas.  In keeping with the Texas way we tuned into the local country music station on the radio.  The theme for the day, “A Loving, Lying and Leaving Valentine’s!”  Loving, ok fine, but lying and leaving? While it may suit the lyrics of the majority of country music tunes, it doesn’t really suit most relationships!  I thought maybe I would offer some sweeter suggestions for sweethearts this year.  And, if your sweetheart was the lying and leaving type and you are now alone, just treat yourself!

Chocolate is synonymous with Valentine’s Day but anyone can give a box of chocolates.  Why not take chocolate to another level with a chocolate trip?   Chicago offers a sweet solution with the Chicago Chocolate Tours. The tours last approximately 3 hours with guided walks through various neighborhoods. Choose from Lakeview, the downtown loop, Chicago’s Magnificent Mile or the French Market. Sample sweet treats from cupcakes to truffles to hot chocolate in locally owned shops throughout the city. Along the way, you will learn about the neighborhoods, history, architecture and even some fun chocolate facts. All the walking will help keep the sweets from sticking to your hips! www.chicagochocolatetours.com

New York City is always a popular Valentine’s Day destination – remember Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks meeting at the top of the Empire State Building in Sleepless in Seattle?   While you may or may not find your valentine in the city, you can certainly find more chocolate!  Entering Max Brenner’s Chocolate Restaurant in New York’s Union Square your chocolate senses are magnified. The aroma of cocoa is everywhere brought on by the chocolate constantly flowing from the chocolate mixing machine, the cocoa drinks being mixed for eager restaurant guests and all the decadent chocolate desserts ready for you to experience.

These are just a few of the treats for your senses on the menu at Max Brenner’s Chocolate Restaurants:  Pearl Sugar Chocolate Waffles, Key Lime Creamy White Chocolate Crepe, Chocolate Crispy Egg Rolls, O.M.G. Chocolate Chunk Cookies – do I need to go on? With locations worldwide in Israel, Singapore, Australia and the Philippines as well as national locations in New York and Philadelphia, Max is doing his part to promote a new chocolate culture.  www.maxbrenner.com

Hershey's Chocolate & Wine Pairing
Hershey’s Chocolate & Wine Pairing

If chocolate tours and chocolate desserts are not enough to satisfy your sweetie, try the ultimate chocolate destination – Hershey, Pennsylvania!  Each year Hershey celebrates “Chocolate Covered February”.  This month-long town-wide celebration of all things chocolate features events and activities for all ages and tastes.  The Sealed with a Kiss package is perfect for couples and includes accomodations at The Hotel Hershey or Hershey Lodge, breakfast, a rose-petal turndown, champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries, a complimentary seven-ounce giant Hershey’s Kiss and complimentary admission to The Hershey Story.   There are also chocolate and beer pairings, chocolate and wine pairings and unique chocolate inspired dinners offered at The Hotel Hershey and the Hershey Lodge.  www.hersheypa.com

You can literally bathe yourself in chocolate at The Chocolate Spa.  Throughout February The Spa at the Hotel Hershey is offering The Chocolate Spa Sampler.  The package includes a Whipped Cocoa Bath, a Chocolate Bean Polish or Chocolate Sugar Scrub and a Cocoa Massage.  www.chocolatespa.com

After you and your sweetheart have eaten chocolate, drank chocolate martinis, bathed yourselves in chocolate and been scrubbed and massaged with chocolate why not drape yourself in the ultimate indulgence – chocolate diamonds! Hershey has been bringing chocolate diamonds from Le Vian Jewelers to their guests through The Jeweler at The Hotel Hershey for the last 3 years.  In those years, Erin DeLoach, Director of Retail for The Jeweler at The Hotel Hershey, has witnessed many romantic moments.  She tells the story of one couple who visits The Hotel Hershey each year with their children to celebrate their anniversary.  One year the couple stopped in to look at the chocolate diamonds with their children.  A few moments after the couple left the store the husband returned and asked for assistance in choosing the chocolate diamond they thought his wife liked best.   He purchased the diamond and asked for it to be brought to her as dessert while they were dining in The Hotel Hershey’s Circular Dining Room.  The diamond was taken to the chef who created a beautiful dessert display with a chocolate diamond center!  Ah, romance, don’t you love it?

BACK TO NATURE

A Unified Conservation Message

Arthur R. Marshall Foundation, Palm Beach Zoo & South Florida Science Museum Unite to Host Public Events on March 25, 2011 with RICHARD LOUV, Author of Last Child in the Woods

(West Palm Beach, FL – January 26, 2010)  For the first time ever – three of Palm Beach County’s leading environmental and educational nonprofits are joining together for a specific campaign.

marshall-sflscience-pbzooThe Arthur R. Marshall Foundation, the Palm Beach Zoo and the South Florida Science Museum will be co-hosting several BACK TO NATURE events on Friday, March 25, featuring Richard Louv, author of the groundbreaking book Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder.

WHY:

Remember when kids played outdoors after school, on weekends and all day long during the summer?  Playing ball in the vacant lot down the block, climbing trees, exploring nearby fields, hiking and fishing with friends…

Today’s young people are housebound, plopped in front of a TV or computer, growing fatter and more lethargic, completely disconnected from their natural environment.

WHAT:

Deep concern about this worsening generational crisis has motivated these three major nonprofit organizations in West Palm Beach to join forces to host several public events on March 25 with author Richard Louv

The events include a press conference with Mr. Louv at the Palm Beach Zoo with children asking some of the questions, and a special BACK TO NATURE luncheon at the Ritz-Carlton, Palm Beach.

Both events will be co-hosted by the Arthur R. Marshall Foundation, which champions the restoration and preservation of the greater Everglades ecosystem; the Palm Beach Zoo, a zoological organization located in Dreher Park that houses more than 1,400 animals within 23 acres of lush, tropical habitat; and the neighboring South Florida Science Museum, which features more than 50 hands-on exhibits, a digital planetarium, freshwater and saltwater aquariums, as well as natural history exhibitions.

WHEN & WHERE:

Friday, March 25, 2011

+  10 a.m. – Press Conference with Richard Louv

With questions asked by both children and reporters

At the Palm Beach Zoo – Tropics Café Deck

1301 Summit Boulevard in West Palm Beach

+  Noon – BACK TO NATURE Luncheon

    At the Ritz-Carlton, Palm Beach

WHO:

Richard Louv is a journalist and author of seven books about the connections between family, nature and community. His most recent book, LAST CHILD IN THE WOODS: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder, which has been translated into nine languages and published in 13 countries. He is also the chairman and cofounder of Children & Nature Network (www.childrenandnature.org).

In 2008, Louv was awarded the Audubon Medal from the National Audubon Society. He has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Times of London and other major publications, and has appeared on NBC’s Today Show, ABC’s Good Morning America, the CBS Evening News and several programs on NPR, including Morning Edition, Fresh Air and Talk of the Nation.

QUOTE FROM LAST CHILD IN THE WOOD:

“Just as children need good nutrition and adequate sleep, they may very well need contact with nature. Reducing the (Nature-Deficit Disorder) – healing the broken bond between our young and nature – is in our self-interest, not only because aesthetics or justice demands it, but also because our mental, physical and spiritual health depends upon it.  The health of the earth is at stake as well.”
