Spicy Weekend Heading Your Way at SalsaFest!

 

More than 20,000 people are expected to attend Palm Beach County’s spiciest event, SalsaFest, on November 19th through the 21st at Greenacres Community Park, located on Jog Road just north of 10th Avenue. 

 

salsafest3In its fourth year, SalsaFest will heat things up with three world-renowned salsa musical acts lined up to be on stage Saturday night including international sensation Puerto Rican Power (8:30pm), Ray Castro y el Conjunto Clasico (6:30pm), and Hansel Y Raul (4:30pm).  A full schedule of music is planned for the two days.  “We invite everyone to visit our official SalsaFest website (www.SalsaFest.net) for a full listing of all of the entertainers,” said Jaene Miranda, CEO of the Palms West Chamber.   “The website also provides a complete schedule of many other fun activities happening at the event.”

 

The festival is expanding this year from a one day to a two and a half days.  Friday November 19th (5pm to 10pm) is preview night – as the festival vendors prepare for the grand opening on Saturday morning, visitors will be able to enter the festival at no cost and enjoy the carnival rides and food.  In addition to the main entertainers featured on Saturday night, the weekend (Saturday 11am to 10pm & Sunday 11am to 6pm) offers something for everyone searching to add a little spice to their life.  Appearances by costume characters throughout the day, Chihuahua races and costume contests, carnival rides, bounce houses, domino competition, arts & crafts, stilt walkers, dance competition, activities for the kids, community performances, safety fair and a business expo will round out the flavor of this annual Latin festival.

 

Back for the third straight year is the Sizzling Salsa Cooking lineup that includes La Cucina de Ninos – the Kids Kitchen – competitions by young chefs from the Palm Beach County School District and Salsa Cooking Demonstrations.  The fiery competition peaks as the event features mayors and officials from Greenacres, Wellington, Royal Palm Beach, Loxahatchee Groves and the Indian Trail Improvement District in a Sizzling Salsa Caliente Showdown. 

 

This year’s event was made possible by the generous support of our presenting sponsors, Royal Palm Toyota, Optimal Wellness Institute, El Bodegon Grocery and Independent Imaging plus many other supporters of the chamber and its Hispanic initiative. 

 

“Not only do we have Grammy winning acts, this Hispanic targeted festival provides an opportunity for business owner who are searching for creative ways to reach into the community we all serve,” said Dr. Harvey Montijo, founder of Optimal Wellness Institute. 

 

Expanding on the thought, Ira Greenbaum, General Manager for Royal Palm Toyota adds “SalsaFest puts us face-to-face with our customers and allows us to give back to the community.”

Halloween is such a festive holiday, bringing friends and neighbors together for some laughs and good treats. And although Trick or Treating is such a great American tradition, there is always that concern of eating too much candy!!

 

Every year, immediately after Halloween, there is a significant rise in the number of children going to the dentist due to toothaches. Most parents tend to struggle with the issue of what to do with all that candy and how to explain to the child that he or she should not eat all of it.

 

For the past three years, Dr. Haik’s office has brainstormed with different ideas on how to encourage the children of the community to give their candy away. This year seems to have been most successful.

 

Dr. Haik offered children of the community to bring their candy to their office and trade it in for CA$H. 1 pound=$1 and a toothbrush with each trade, and Dr. Haik also committed to match all dollar amounts to the school to which each child attends.

 

On Tuesday, November 2nd, children from around the community came to Dr. Haik’s office with bags of candy and big smiles. 21 schools were represented throughout the evening, and the room was filled with excitement, smiles and laughter. Both Elmo and Toothy dropped by to say hello, and Dr. Haik simply kept clowning around.

 

A Total of 417.5 pounds of candy were collected in three hours. The two top schools with the most collected candy by weight were:

 

1. Equestrian Trails Elementary (179.75 lbs)

2. Panther Run (79 lbs.)

 

All the candy will be arranged to be shipped to our service man and women overseas, with the hopes that they do not forget to brush and floss.

Free Kids Painting Activity Encourages Young Artists to

“Eat Your Art Out” With ArtStart at the

West Palm Beach GreenMarket November 20

Wellington, FL – ArtStart, a Palm Beach County nonprofit dedicated to making the arts accessible to everyone, invites parents to bring their young artists to the West Palm Beach Green Market on Saturday, November 20th from 9am – noon for a fun-filled art activity.

This free activity will allow kids to paint holiday cards – using nontoxic acrylic paint and vegetables instead of paintbrushes.  ArtStart’s table will be between the fountains and the great lawn at the east end of Clematis Street, and we encourage kids of all ages to come out and get creative. “Picasso said that every child is an artist, and we truly believe that,” said ArtStart founder and president Jeannette Pomeroy Parssi, “and kids always have a blast painting with carrots, broccoli and kale!”

 

ArtStart will be offering boxed holiday cards, painted with rosemary and carrots, to raise money for its arts education programming. 

 

“CANS FOR CAKE” – Bring a Canned Good and Decorate a Cupcake

Market goers are asked to donate a canned good in exchange for a cupcake to benefit NewsChannel 5 WPTV Food For Families Thanksgiving Food Drive. And you are ‘cake boss,’ so bring your best decorating ideas along with a canned good.

MDA IS PUTTING WEST PALM BEACH LEADERS BEHIND BARS FOR GOOD

 

[WEST PALM BEACH, FL, OCTOBER 29, 2010]— The Muscular Dystrophy Association will be hosting the West Palm Beach Lock-Up beginning 9 a.m., Thursday, November 4th, at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in City Place. At the event numerous local business and community leaders will be volunteering to go behind bars for MDA.

These participants will be raising funds to provide services for local families living with muscular dystrophy, according to the Executive Director of MDA, Brandy Miller.

“The Lock-Up is one of my favorite events,” Miller said. “It’s a great opportunity for community leaders to show their support for all the children and adults that MDA serves. The best part is that they get to take an hour of their day to come out and have fun with other local business leaders all for a great cause.”

Approximately 300 “jailbirds” are expected to participate in the annual MDA Lock-Up.  Representatives from various industries will be present, including city officials, realtors, doctors, attorneys, bankers, and members of the auto and leisure business to name a few.

During the event jailbirds will have the opportunity to continue to raise bail, dine and have a good time set to the music of DJ Carlos Leon from World Class Entertainment,  who will be there keeping everyone motivated and having fun.

As an added incentive, those who raise their bail will get to do a live check presentation during the Annual MDA Telethon in September. Those who raise over $5,000 become eligible to be in the Jailbird All Star Club, which receives national recognition.

Jailbirds are raising bail by receiving donations from friends, family and business associates. Bail for the jailbirds is set at $3,200—the cost to help send four children to MDA summer camp. Last year’s West Palm Lock-Up grand total was over $90,000.  This year, with the incredible support of the Sales Manager Heyden Hernandez of Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, who is graciously hosting this event, the bar has been raised and the goal has been set at $100,000. The money raised at the MDA Lock-Up will help fund MDA services in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast.   

MDA is a voluntary health agency working to defeat more than 40 neuromuscular diseases through worldwide research, comprehensive services and far reaching professional and public health education. Clean out your closet and make a difference!  We are collecting coats and jackets for Families in Belle Glade who might not have a jacket this winter without your generosity.  Please launder before dropping them off. They will be distributed through a Belle Glade Elementary School.

Moon Phases for October 2010

 

The New Moon this month will be on Saturday the 6th, then the First Quarter Moon will occur on Saturday the 13th. The Full Moon will come on Sunday the 21st, and the Last Quarter Moon on Sunday the 28th.

 

Planet Lineup for November 2010

 

November will see the return of Saturn, which will be visible early in the morning before sunrise. The gas giant’s rings will be in an increasingly tilting position and will make for some stunning sights of the ringed planet.

 

Also in the morning sky is Venus as it shines brightly in the low eastern sky. You can begin to see it at the end of the first week in November just below the star Spica.

 

Jupiter continues its shiny spectacle being quite visible just as the sun goes down. By 8:00 p.m. it is pretty high in the southern sky and lies just below the Pegasus constellation.

 

Jupiter’s magnitude will decrease slightly by the end of November, but nonetheless, the planet will remain a big highlight of the night sky throughout the month.

 

Mercury and Mars can be found, preferably with binoculars, by looking to the low western horizon before the sky gets fully dark. The two can be seen close together on November 20th when they will be just 1.7 degrees apart.

 

Stars, Constellations and Galaxies to view in October

 

The Saggitarius Constellation can be spotted low in the southwestern sky at sunset on November 20th. Looking just below it you may be able to spot the Scorpius constellation as it lies just to the left of Mars and Mercury.

 

The great square of Pegasus is quite relevant high overhead by mid-month at about 8:00p.m. and it can be easily detected by its big square shape.

 

The Pleiades star cluster is coming back to the night skies this month appearing on the lower eastern skies at around 10 p.m. in the beginning of November. By mid-month it is a bit higher in the east and easier to spot. It looks like a very small dipper that becomes more apparent the more you look at it.

 

Look to the east of the Pleiades by mid-month to catch the Orion constellation as it begins to make its way back to its winter sky. It will be on the lower eastern horizon at around 8 p.m. by November 18th and by 10 p.m. it will be quite apparent to the southeast.

 

Look on up and smile!
