Ross JCC starts ‘club’ for women who have survived

 breast cancer, or are being treated for it

Goal is to enhance overall health while contending with the illness   

 

BOYNTON BEACH — In conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the Lore & Eric F. Ross JCC is inaugurating the Pink Ribbon Wellness Club tailored for women who have survived breast cancer or are being treated for it. The goal of this high-caliber wellness program is to enhance participants’ quality of life socially as well as physically. The classes run twice a week for 12 weeks and begin on Oct. 5.

 

Breast cancer treatments can be life-saving, but often cause exhaustion and other health concerns. Research shows that, whether in the midst of treatment or post treatment, the right blend of exercise can help: 

o       Increase energy and strength

o       Restore ease in performing daily tasks

o       Maintain healthy body weight

o       Improve overall cardiovascular functions

o       Boost general quality of life

The Pink Ribbon Wellness Club aims to accomplish all of that.

 

“One of the priorities of the JCC is healthy living, and this new program addresses a vital quality-of-life and health issue for many women in our community,” said JCC Health and Fitness Director Shawn McDougall, whose mother is a Stage 3B breast cancer survivor.

 

The twice weekly 60-75 minute sessions are structured in a group environment with individual goals and limitations taken into consideration. The sessions will be lead by the Lore and Eric F. Ross JCC Health, Fitness and Wellness Education staff. Once cleared to enroll in the Club, participants will go through aerobic, strengthening, flexibility, and relaxation components. Sessions will also include nutritional consultations, and mind and body offerings (massage therapy and yoga), as well as group support.

 

Through physical activity, nutrition education, and behavior modification, the Pink Ribbon Wellness Club creates a holistic blend of components essential to improve an individual’s health and well-being.

 

The Pink Ribbon Wellness Club program is partly funded by the South Florida affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.

When you schedule a BEE, an FPL energy expert will visit your facility for a top-to-bottom examination. When the evaluation is complete, the specialist provides a personalized energy analysis and recommends ways to improve your business’ energy efficiency. Common suggestions include installing a programmable thermostat that automates temperature settings to maximize efficiency according to your hours of operation or adding occupancy sensors that automatically turn off lighting in areas with transient use.

St. Peter’s Church to Hold Community Harvest Fest Saturday, October 16, 2010

 

St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, located at 12200 Forest Hill Boulevard, Wellington, will hold its 4th annual Community Harvest Fest on Saturday,

Oct. 16, 2010, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  It will be an all day affair with fun-filled activities and entertainment.

Harvest Fest will start the day with the Blessing of the Bikes at 10 a.m. and continue throughout the day. There will be a large group of crafters selling their crafts inside the air-conditioned gym as well as a big bake sale.  There will be children’s games, bounce house, rock wall climbing, bungee acrobatics, gladiator jousting, inflatable slide, obstacle course, bungee run, face painting, ponies, petting zoo and more. 

 

On stage entertainment will begin at 10:00 and continue to 4 p.m.  Entertainers will include:

11:00 a.m. – Puppet Show

                HARDSCAPES IN THE LANDSCAPE

         

Bill Reeve is leading off with a presentation focusing on landscape features many of us include in our gardens and that very often lay the groundwork for the overall landscape design.  



 

Landscape Architect, Bill Reeve, will discuss the role that hardscape design and selection play in the overall plan of a residential project. He will review the most commonly used hardscape elements such as swimming pools, patios/walkways, water features, arbors/trellises and art in the landscape.Understanding the order of design and the impact of each hardscape design decision and its relationship with the landscape will be the main focus of this lecture.                         

 

William H. Reeve IV is the president of Botanical Visions, Inc.

He has over twenty-six years of experience in the design/horticulture trade in the South Florida region. He promoted the extension program, and has served on various professional organization boards and communities. He worked closely with the Children Services Council staff on various aspects of the development of the Parenting Education Center. Bill is nationally certified in landscape design by the Association of Professional Landscape Designers. Botanical Visions, Inc. received the Landscape Excellence Award for 2010 in Boca Raton.  Bill’s presentation will show how we can artfully integrate hardscape elements into the design of our own gardens.

BOYNTON BEACHThe Lore & Eric F. Ross JCC is launching the second season of its popular Academy of Continuing Education (ACE) with a Meet-the-Faculty Open House. The Open House is set for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010 in the social hall of the Ross JCC at 8500 Jog Rd., just north of Gateway Boulevard.

 

ACE faculty members will answer questions about the dozens of course offerings, and registration will be available. Faculty member Dr. Jay Goldman will give a short presentation on “Managing Chronic Pain.” ACE classes begin Monday, Oct. 18 with courses, seminars, lectures, and discussion groups taught by retired professors, lawyers, politicians, authors, enthusiasts, and even Holocaust survivors.  

 

The spectrum of classes is broad and wide with offerings as such as, “George Gershwin: The Man,” taught by his cousin; “My Son the Doctor/Astronaut: No, the Space Program Has Not Ended,” taught by the mother of NASA astronaut Garrett Reisman, and musical fare such as “Doo Wop: Music of Baby Boomers,” and “Folk Music: Origins, History, and Enjoyment.” History buffs can check out classes such as “Secret, Suppressed Facts about the Holocaust Revealed at Last,” and “American Jewry and the Civil War.” For lovers of literature there are classes such as “Existentialism: Humanism & Satire in French Literature,” while entrepreneurs can enjoy “Your Crazy Idea Could Be Worth Millions.” The list goes on.

 

Two 75-minute classes will be offered Monday through Friday afternoons, at 12:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., and will run anywhere from two to eight weeks.  The Center will hold three sessions: fall (October –December), winter/spring (January –April), and summer (June-July), totaling 31 weeks.
