The Splendor of Painting Foliage: Four Workshops
with Artist Deborah Bigeleisen

Saturdays, 10 am to 12:30 pm

$250 members; $275 nonmembers (includes full Garden admission).

Class size limited to 12 adults; all classes are nonrefundable.

This series of four painting workshops is focused on capturing the splendor of foliage. Deborah Bigeleisen has a comfortable approach to teaching and will demonstrate a variety of techniques. She will explore the elements of composition, color, and technique, and some fundamentals of color theory. Students will work from a reference that inspires them. Students should bring several photographs or (other artists’) paintings of foliage that inspire them. The purpose of this is to give the student a ‘road map,’ a direction or a visual image of what they are aspiring to paint. Students might consider taking photographs at Mounts Botanical Garden prior to the first class – think about framing your composition through the camera lens. The variety of styles adds excitement and energy to the class, and everyone learns from one another. It is advisable to print out reference pictures on photo paper or on a laptop to capture a larger image in more vivid colors; cell phones are not recommended because the image is too small and does not stay visible indefinitely. This series is well suited for students of all levels working in oils or acrylics. For any questions contact Deborah Bigeleisen at info@deborahbigeleisen.com.

Members of the Florida League of Cities Federal Action Strike Team bring local issues to D.C.

0

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Municipal officials representing all regions of the state participated in the Florida League of Cities (FLC) federal advocacy trip known as the Federal Action Strike Team (FAST) Fly-In. More than 50 Florida city officials came together in the nation’s capital to meet with members of Florida’s congressional delegation and advocate for key federal issues that affect municipalities

“The League’s FAST Fly-In trip allows us to have in-person conversations with members of Florida’s congressional delegation and build relationships that will strengthen Florida,” said FLC President Jolien CaraballoVice Mayor for the City of Port St. Lucie. “When local, state and federal officials work together, our residents benefit and our communities thrive. We really appreciate the members of Congress meeting with us to discuss important issues impacting our local communities.”

During their time Washington, D.C., local leaders advocated for reauthorizing the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and simplifying the federal infrastructure grants process. The group also focused its advocacy efforts on discussing key priority issues including cybersecurity funding, community development block grants (CDBGs), tax exemption for municipal bonds and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) loan interest relief.

“Our Federal Action Strike Team had a successful trip to Washington, with the largest group of attendees to date,” said FAST Chair Anne GerwigMayor of theVillage of Wellington. “Each participant brought a unique perspective to our meetings, which helped our congressional delegation better understand how the issues we discussed impact Florida’s cities. The direct communications with federal agencies, including the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Office of the National Cyber Director and FEMA will help our local communities access federal resources and their processes.”

Before heading to Capitol Hill, representatives from the FLC and National League of Cities (NLC) federal advocacy team provided a federal briefing. The group met with most members of Florida’s congressional delegation, including Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott.

FAST members also met with the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, where they heard directly from federal agency representatives on housing resources, infrastructure funding opportunities, cybersecurity and FEMA disaster recovery. Attendees were in Washington during the President’s State of the Union address.

Founded in 1922, the Florida League of Cities is the united voice for Florida’s municipal governments. Its goals are to promote local self-government and serve the needs of Florida’s cities, which are formed and governed by their citizens. The League believes in “Local Voices Making Local Choices,” which focuses on the impact citizens and city leaders have in improving Florida’s communities. For more information, visit flcities.com.

Golden Heart Luncheon Raises Nearly $600,000 for Children’s Health Care

Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. (February 15, 2023) – Celebrating 19 years of inspiring hope and promoting world-class pediatric care, the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation raised nearly $600,000 during its annual Golden Heart Luncheon at The Country Club at Mirasol on January 30.

The 16-time Grammy award-winning composer and producer David Foster, and his wife, American Idol alumna and singer Katharine McPhee, attended the luncheon as special guests, using their music and voices to help raise money for the Foundation. The celebrity couple wowed the crowd after performing iconic music classics such as “The Prayer” and “Glory of Love,” and “For Just a Moment” from the movie St. Elmo’s Fire.

However, 6-year-old Jaxon Budnick stole the show and the hearts of guests. Jaxon was born with metopic craniosynostosis, a rare condition that causes skull and facial deformities. Shortly after birth, he received one of the most complex surgeries for children at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami. Jaxon is now living a happy and healthy life with his family in Jupiter, Florida, and receives ongoing medical treatment close to home at Nicklaus Children’s Palm Beach Gardens Outpatient Center.

“I can’t thank the Nicklaus family enough for everything they have done and continue to do,” said Jaxon’s mother, Dara Budnick. “All the people and lives they are able to touch … it’s something that’s indescribable.”

“From an organizational perspective, what they’ve created has made it so easy for Jaxon to be a patient,” continued Jaxon’s father, Cliff Budnick. “It’s nice to have this extraordinary level of care in our own backyard.”

Jack and Barbara Nicklaus founded the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation in 2004 in an effort to provide families access to the best level of pediatric health care in Palm Beach County and beyond. Raising $170 million to date, the Foundation supports Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, which has helped children from every state in the union and 119 countries. The Nicklaus Children’s Health System includes the main hospital campus in Miami, and 21 centers from Monroe County to Martin County, as well as a pediatric partnership with Jupiter Medical Center.

LEXUS International Gay Polo Tournament Presented by Douglas Elliman Returns for 16th Year!

WELLINGTON, FL. – The National Polo Center, Wellington’sdestination for polo and equestrian sports, will transform into a colorful five-day fete with celebrants coming from around the world to support the LEXUS International Gay Polo Tournament – Presented by Douglas Elliman Real Estate (GPL) from April 6-9, 2023. Creating a culture of community, togetherness, and high fashion, the event inspires and empowers lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals in sports and beyond.

“As our world continues to evolve, we remain a constant at the forefront, working to create inclusiveness and equality in not only polo and equestrian sports, but in the community as a whole,” shared Chip McKenney, founder of the Gay Polo League. “We are honored to have so many friends and allies join us each year.”

The robust itinerary for the 2023 event kicks off with the GPL Polo Players Welcome Reception (by invitation) on Thursday, April 6. Players gather for camaraderie, joie-de-vivre and much fun before the weekend’s festivities fully begin. Everyone’s favorite pre-event, the GPL Polotini Wigstock cocktail reception will take place on Friday, April 7 at The National Polo Center and will feature a hair-raising extravaganza and exciting “to be announced” special guests, cocktails and light bites. Wigs are highly encouraged for this event!

Saturday, April 8 is main event tournament and tailgate competition.  Sixteen polo players from around the world will compete on the Isla Carroll West Field for the prize (and bragging rights) during both The Senator’s Cup and The Founders Cup beginning at 1:00 p.m. Not be missed is GPL’sworld-famous tailgate competition. Tailgaters are already dreaming up their whimsical tablescapes and decor in preparation for the fun-spirited competitiveness that lines the polo field, with each tailgate becoming its own experience that collectively contributes to the overall flare and exhilaration of the day. Coveted awards for Best in Show, Best Cuisine, Best Cocktail, Best Single Tailgate, and Best Multiple Tailgate are up for grabs. All in attendance are anxiously waiting to see what themes tailgaters will bring to this years’ competition. Favorites over the years have included themes from Steel Magnolias, Gray Gardens, Brunch at Tiffany’s, Gay Polo League (GPL) yacht club, Gert’s 1950’s Beauty Salon, Wizard of Oz, and more.

While each tailgater and team might be in competition, it is the desire for equality on and off the field that resonates with all in attendance. The impact that The Gay Polo League has made can be seen in the receiving of the Champion of Equity & Diversity in Sports award from the Palm Beach County Sports Commission in 2022. The first award from a non-gay organization, the recognition symbolizes that GPL has become an instrument of change and oftentimes introduce gay people into the lives and consciousness of people who may not have known gay people firsthand.”

Back again this year after a wildly successful launch is Haute House– an exclusive tent filled with social influencers that addto the stardom of the event’s attendees. The energy from the jovial groups and vibrant scenes will once again uplift the athletes on the field feverishly pursuing title championship.

Acting on its vision of providing equality, pride, inclusion, and confidence for those who face discrimination simply due to having non-traditional sexual or gender identities, the tournament will once again benefit the OnePULSE Foundation. In 2022, this GPL event raised $135,000 for the nonprofitorganization, born after the tragic events that unfolded at Pulse Nightclub, where 49 people lost their lives in 2016. Aiming for even more money raised in 2023, the GPL is working tirelesslyto support efforts by onePULSE to fund scholarships while creating a sanctuary for and to honor the victims who lost their lives.

“While triumphs in financial impact, anticipation, and attendance each year are always highlights, it is the thousands of athletes, supporters, and attendees celebrating diversity together as one that is truly what makes this event so special,” ended McKenney.
