West Palm Beach, Fla.– On December 2, 2022, Palm Health Foundation’s 2022 scholarship recipients had the opportunity to meet and thank the donors who are supporting their education and their career goals in the nursing and behavioral health professions. Over 100 guests gathered at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens in West Palm Beach, FL, to honor the 61 undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate students, and listen to the heartfelt stories of the generous donors who are making their dreams come true. Frances Fisher generously underwrote the scholarship reception at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens where she serves as chairwoman.
Mrs. Fisher kicked off the evening by sharing how grateful she is to support local students dedicated to the health of the Palm Beach County community through The Frances Fisher Scholarship Fund at Palm Health Foundation where she serves as a board member and philanthropy committee chair. Fellow foundation board member and immediate past chair Denise Bober emceed the evening, sharing her personal story about what inspired her family to create The Sutton Kailey Nursing Advancement Fund. Named for her granddaughters, born just 24 weeks into her daughter Melissa’s pregnancy, Bober shared how “Kailey shined her presence on this earth for a mere 24 hours before God called her to come to heaven. Baby Sutton remained brave and strong, survived heart surgery, and spent 111 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.” Eight-year-old Sutton joined her grandmother at the lectern to recognize her family’s scholarship fund recipient, Victoria Ugalde.
Michael Dolce was invited to share the story behind The Joseph Dolce Surgical Nursing Scholarship Fund, named for his grandfather who was a doctor who served the poor of Palm Beach County, providing his medical services for free. With his son Luke by his side, Mr. Dolce spoke of his grandfather’s commitment to his patients and the deep respect he had for nurses. Luke held photos of his great-grandfather as his father spoke, sharing the image of the man whose legacy lives on through the Palm Health Foundation scholarship in his name.
Several other scholarship donors were recognized at the event, including Pam Gladstone and Elizabeth Rosenthal representing the B.J. & Paula Harris Fund Scholars, Jill Merrell and the John T. Merrell Scholarship Fund, and Charles Keys, representing the Valley Bank Scholarship Fund. Scholars also received awards from several other funds at Palm Health Foundation, including: The Andrew P. Barowsky Scholarship Fund; The Samuel & Sylvia Lamstein Nursing Education Fund Scholarship; The Debra Coffman Howe Nursing Scholarship Fund; The Charles Norton Adams Nursing Endowment Fund; The Helen K. Persson Nursing Education Scholarship Fund; The Peter and Elinka Ordway Nursing Scholarship Fund; and The Palm Health Foundation Nursing Advancement Fund.
Patrick McNamara, president and CEO of Palm Health Foundation closed the evening by thanking the donors who collectively awarded over $400,000 in scholarships in 2022 and recognized the importance of the scholars’ dedication to health care. “Our community needs care that only professionals, like all of you, can provide,” he said. “You are here because you’ve demonstrated dedication, perseverance, and a true desire to serve your neighbors. Palm Health Foundation is proud to support, honor, and uplift you as you continue your journey. Thank you for your service to our community.”
Palm Health Foundation has granted more than $3.5 million in nursing scholarships to over 1,000 nursing students for advanced education since its founding in 2001 and recently expanded its scholarships to include the behavioral health field. The scholarships are administered by the George Snow Scholarship Fund and encourage individuals with financial need to enter and advance in the nursing and mental/behavioral health professions. AW: Tell us about your plans for Read It Write It this year. What’s the goal of the event?
HH: Read It Write It’s mission is to bring together authors and readers of all ages and backgrounds and foster a love of reading and writing in our local community. We achieve this during our one day event by offering panel discussions/workshops, book signings, poetry readings and a book swap. In addition to that, we are also aiming to increase the number of Little Libraries in Wellington. Currently, there are five. Our goal for this year is to add at least two more.
AW: Why did you decide to move it to Wellington this year?
HH: Read It Write It is a Palm Beach County centric event. Wellington has such a wonderful community. It seemed like a natural fit.
AW: Who are some of the writers who will be exhibiting their work?
HH: USA Today Best Seller Lynessa Lane will be joining us, as well as Sheila Fowler, C.A. Miconi, Edward Laden Sr., and Steve Altier, just to name a few.
AW: Who are the publishers who will be there?
HH: We have three publishers joining us: Neon Sunrise Publishing and Wayward Cat specialize in prose, and Cosmic Times specializes in comic books and graphic novels.
AW: What kind of panel discussions will happen?
HH: I try to mix up the panel discussions. There will be something for everyone. You can expect panels for novices that range in topic – on the writing process and how to become published, to panels for writers already on their journey speaking specifically about how to market your books and branding as well as writing in specific genres.
AW: Is there still time to sign up as an author? Publisher?
HH: There is still time to register. I have a few tables left. Registration will remain open until I run out of tables or a week before the show- whichever comes first. Early Bird registration has been extended until January 15th. To register go to HeidiCreates.net
AW: Is it free to attend?
HH: Yes. General Admission is free. This year we have added two additional experiences. The Avid Reader and The VIP Experience. For more information about these experiences go to HeidiCreates.net.
AW: What inspired you to launch a book festival?
HH: I am a voracious reader and writing is my passion. I wanted to build a large festival environment that was free for everyone to attend and celebrates those things.
AW: Tell us about your writers group too.
HH: The Read It Write It – Writers Group is a casual low key writing critique group that meets the second Tuesday of every month. Copperpoint Brewing Company is our current location. We meet at 7pm.
AW: Tell us about your recently published book “The Short End of Madness.”
HH: The Short End of Madness is my first published book. It’s a genre spanning collection of short stories all centered around varying degrees of madness. It was a labor of love and an absolute blast to write.

Starting in January, Wellington’s popular Thursday night Food Truck & Music Series returns to Wellington’s Town Center. The events will be hosted on the Town Center Promenade (12150 Forest Hill Boulevard) while the Wellington Amphitheater remains closed due to ongoing construction for the Town Center Phase 2 project.
The Thursday night series will feature approximately 10-12 food trucks each week, accompanied by live music tributes and performances by local bands. Saturday and Sunday concerts will remain at Village Park (11700 Pierson Road) and are scheduled on select dates each month.
For additional information on the Town Center Phase 2 construction, visit the “Capital Improvement Projects” page at www.wellingtonfl.gov.
Stay up to date on events and activities coming up in Wellington by signing up for the monthly Play Wellington Newsletter at www.wellingtonfl.gov/PlayWellington.
As another way to stay informed on the latest news and updates from the Village, residents are invited to sign up for Wellington information and updates at www.wellingtonfl.gov/Newsletter.
January is the time of year that we reset ourselves with thoughts of doing or being better. I am no different than anyone else. I’m setting goals and reflecting on my health and fitness. Caring for an aging mom who obviously deposited her genetic code on me is making me more reflective. “Move it or lose it” is my statement for 2023! Join me if you will, by making lifestyle changes that make us stronger as a community.
Fireworks at Village Park in Wellington. Photo by Elien Boes.
Events coming up in the Village are exciting too. Casino Night on the Promenade is happening on Saturday January 14th. Tickets are available on the website and it’s a new use of the Promenade (casting it as a boardwalk as in Atlantic City). You may have noticed that more 21 and up events are being planned. This is by request and response to the residents. Our popular Amphitheater events have been moved while we continue to expand that venue, and the Promenade is a great way for us to continue to Gather at the Town Center Complex.
Also the Father/Daughter dance returns at Village Park (instead of the community center) on January 28th. Tickets sold out in record time this year, but because its at Village Park gym we may be able to accommodate more. The Theme this year is Boogie at the Bayou. Check back with the website in case there are additional tickets available. This has become a very popular way to celebrate the Father Daughter relationship in a time where that has never been more important.
Lakeside Market continues on Friday evenings on the Promenade too with local vendors that offer unique items. Food and beverages are available too so come out and make an evening of it.
The Equestrian Events are really the star of the January Show in Wellington! Polo at the Nation Polo Center (formerly International Polo Club) Show Jumping at the Wellington Equestrian Center and Dressage at Global Dressage are what makes us the Winter Equestrian Capital of the World. (krista: can you add the links to these venues??) There is no place like our Great Home Town to enjoy the best of these international events. If you haven’t been to all of these, make it a New Year’s Resolution! There are affordable ways to attend all of them and it is exciting to watch each one.
Just In Time for the Holidays, U.S. Army Veteran Honored With a Brand New, Mortgage-Free Home in South Florida Agrihood
South Palm Beach County, Fla. (December 16, 2022) – On December 16th, former U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Jose Jimenez and his family received the holiday gift of a lifetime: a brand-new, mortgage-free home at Arden, South Florida’s first agrihood community. In a dedication ceremony on their front lawn, representatives from Lennar and nonprofit Operation Finally Home presented the Jimenez family with the keys to their new house.
“This is surreal,” said Jimenez. “I still can’t find the words to express how grateful and appreciative we are to Lennar and Operation Finally Home for giving us a place to plant our roots and raise our son. This is life-changing for our family, and I cannot thank them enough.”
Sergeant Jimenez enlisted in the U.S. Army in October 2005. While serving in Afghanistan in 2010, Jimenez suffered a traumatic brain injury, temporarily losing his sight and the use of his legs. Nonetheless, he remained dedicated to his platoon and returned to duty one month after the incident.
Jose met his wife, Alex, also a veteran, while they were both serving in Afghanistan. They married in 2012 and have a young son.
Jose was honorably discharged in 2013 after having served for almost eight years, including two combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. For his service, he received countless military awards including a Purple Heart, two Army Good Conduct Medals, an Army Achievement Medal, an Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two campaign stars, and a Combat Action Medal.
In July 2022, Jose and his family were surprised by Lennar Palm Atlantic Division and Operation Finally Home with the news that they would be receiving a new home. Five months later, escorted by a motorcade of the local patriotic motorcycle group Freedom Riders, they were welcomed into their newly furnished house that will provide a stable future for their family.
“The homebuilding industry gives back in a meaningful way and provides homes to people every day across the country,” said Operation Finally Home President Rusty Carroll. “But today, they provided hope and a stable future to this incredible family. Beyond their military service, they have done everything they can to provide a sense of home to their son. Home is where the heart is, and now that heart has an address.”
Lennar Palm Atlantic Division President Michael Meyers added: “I have had the privilege of getting to know the Jimenez family over the past few months. This dedication is a genuine thank you for what they have done for our country; to protect us and our freedoms and to allow us to live the lives that we live.”
