Inaugural Olympia Community Run

Inaugural Community Run for Olympia Residents Brings Neighborhood Together

On Sunday, December 5th, Olympia residents laced up their sneakers for the First Inaugural Community Run.

After nearly two years of pandemic isolation, AJ and Christina Bachmann wanted to get back to doing what they loved – running. But this time they wanted to run with their community.

The Bachmanns usually run a half marathon every year, but weren’t able to during COVID. They had the idea to run with their community members and when they first presented the idea, over 100 people responded. The HOA took notice and got involved helping the Bachmann’s to organize road closings, mass communications, and incurred some costs.

They registered 467 residents and even had to turn people away unfortunately when registration closed a few weeks ago.

They held 4 different races, all circling around a 2.7 mile loop (Fatio Circle) and ending at the Olympia Clubhouse.  These included: The Family Fun Run (1 mile), a 5K, a 10K and a half marathon.

Thanks to sponsors like PCSI (Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Disorders Institute of South Florida), they provided runners with some amazing medals, shirts, bags, and other goodies.  “Sponsors like PCSI have been instrumental in keeping the costs low for residents which encourages entire families to register,” said AJ Bachman.

The attention to detail and enthusiasm for this inaugural event made it a smashing success.

The event brought residents together and helped them network.  “People that had never met previously are now friends,” AJ Bachmann noted.

AJ and Christina have enjoyed watching their neighbors training/preparing for this event…seeing them get outside and go for a run as a family.

They plan to do this yearly and are excited to watch the event grow each year.

Gift Ideas for Nature Lovers

What’s the most unusual Christmas gift you’ve ever received? For me, it was Christmas 2019 as I eagerly unwrapped one of the gifts from my husband, Greg. Always full of surprises, I had no idea what he’d added to the gift bags surrounding our tree. Imagine my surprise when I saw that he’d chosen to give me a Freshette. For those who have no idea what that is (neither did I!) it’s an environmentally sound, palm-sized, reusable, anatomically-designed funnel with a 6” retractable extension tube. Or, as I now call it, a “pee-pee cup.” I was speechless.

Two years later I must say, it may have been the best gift ever. Since COVID invaded our world, Greg and I have logged well over 350 miles of hiking trails all over New York and surrounding areas. With the pee-pee cup, I never have to worry about finding a restroom, dirty outhouses, or exposing my entire bottom while trying to answer nature’s call. I know it’s TMI, but now I can relieve myself just like a man. What a gift, literally!

I share this story not to be tacky but to give you a few ideas for the nature lovers on your gift list. Don’t worry, they’re not all about bodily functions. Here are a few of my favorites.

Vasque Hiking Shoes

Vasque Hikng Shoes
Walking on Water in my Vasque Hiking Shoes

Good shoes make all the difference for hiking or walking long distances. I have hiking boots that I love but this year I tried out the Vasque Breeze LT Low GTX. Made from 50% recycled content and featuring Nature-Tex waterproof technology. This is just one of the many styles Vasque offers. I highly recommend this line – these are hands down the most comfortable, lightweight active shoes I’ve ever owned and I wear them on the trails, walking around New York City and pretty much everywhere.

SCOTTeVEST

Think you could use more pockets when hiking or sightseeing? The SCOTTeVEST solves that problem. Available in several styles for men and women, the motto for these storage-focused vests is “It’s not rocket science, it’s pocket science.” I tried the featherweight eVest for women. This fascinating garment boasts a total of 16 pockets. Features include a tablet pocket, change pockets, water bottle holder, detachable key holder and a removable RFID blocking pocket. The biggest issue I had was remembering where I put everything!

Crampons by Hillsound

Crampons and trekking poles for winter hikes
Winter Hikes with Crampons & Trekking Poles

Like you, I lived in Florida for many years. When I moved to New York it took years for me to master the art of walking in snow without falling down. I never dreamed I’d one day hike through snow but now I’m a big fan. Yes, it’s cold, but as they say in Norway, “there’s no bad weather, only bad clothing.” I was in Norway the first time I tried crampons. Unsuccessfully attempting to walk up an icy hill, my friend, Lisbeth handed me a pair of these metal contraptions with spikes and instructed me to strap them onto my boots. I walked up that ice-covered hill like a boss! It was the best thing EVER (before the pee-pee cup, of course.) Now that I’ve added winter hikes to my weekend activities, I have a pair of my own. If someone on your gift-giving list has the inclination to hike through the snow, they’ll love you for getting them a pair, seriously.

Black Diamond Alpine FLZ Trekking Poles

Black Diamond Alpine Trekking Poles

Some people love trekking poles, others don’t. But I know this from experience – sometimes you need them. While I don’t use mine for every hike, I love having them with me just in case I’m faced with a rock scramble or a trail with rocks that require me to step up to heights equal to my leg length – an unfortunate consequence of being vertically challenged. My Black Diamond Alpine FLZ Trekking Poles are fabulous because they’re lightweight and can be folded to fit in my hiking backpack. Someday when I’m even older than I am now, I’ll use these poles instead of a walking cane. It’s much cooler, don’t you think?

Meet the nomadiQ

nomadiQ

As spending time in nature continues to be a priority, camping has stepped into the spotlight too. Although I’m not a fan of sleeping on the ground, I do enjoy waking up surrounded by trees and the sounds of the great outdoors. Living in New York City, there’s no place to park an RV, so I’ve limited my camping pursuits to glamping, tiny house camping or cabins. With camping, grilling is the only authentic way to dine, right? And, of course, grilling over the fire requires you to actually know how to build a proper fire. Realizing this is not part of my skill set, I chose to try a new approach: the nomadiQ.

This portable gas grill weighs in at an impressively light 12 pounds. Small but mighty, it offers dual temperature control with two independent grilling surfaces. It’s super simple to use and even easier to transport. The folded size is only 16 inches wide, 14 inches high and 6 inches thick. Take it along to campsites, parks, the beach or RVing. We even took ours along for the ride on a Midwest road trip. I’m happy to report, my grilled campsite burgers no longer look and taste like hockey pucks.
You can find nomadiQ on Amazon or at Lowes.com.

Happy Holidays to You and Yours!

Public is Invited to Free Opening Reception and Lecture on December 13; Exhibition Runs Through February 12

Visions & Views of Two Great Photographers

Gary Hershorn

The New, New York City Skyline

“Since the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, New York City has undergone an amazing construction boom transforming an iconic skyline known to people the world over into a completely new look. The city has added supertall skyscrapers to Lower Manhattan, to the west side of midtown with Hudson Yards, and to 57th Street with the addition of the pencil towers along the new Billionaires’ Row. I have spent the last 10 years documenting this change, trying to incorporate the old with the new as the old gets harder and harder to see. With the help of the sun and moon, I try to show the endless beauty of the worlds most desired destination and capture renowned structures like the Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building,” says Gary Hershorn.

A Canadian photographer and picture editor based in New York City, Hershorn’s 40-year career includes stints at UPI and Reuters, where his titles included Senior Photographer, Picture Editor-Americas, and Global Sports Pictures Editor. He led major event coverage of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, Hurricane Katrina, the Haiti Earthquake, as well as 17 Olympic Games, 24 Masters Golf tournaments, 24 Academy Awards, along with various Super Bowls, World Series, Stanley Cups, World Cups of Soccer, US Opens in tennis and golf, Wimbledon, Grammy Awards, and Emmy Awards.

Adam Stoltman

New York City Parks and People

New York City’s system of parks, occupying nearly 30,000 acres of land, numbering more than 1,700 parks and playgrounds, and serving more than 8 million people is one of the most complex, diverse and extraordinary in the world. “Delicately interwoven into the fabric of the city, natural spaces and city parks are inextricably tied to the health of an extremely diverse series of communities and constituencies across the five boroughs,” says Adam Stoltman, who will preview select images from his 6-year ongoing project documenting the many ways in which New Yorkers interact with, utilize and enjoy these parks each day.

A photographer and editor for more than 30 years, work by Adam Stoltman has appeared in Newsweek, LIFE, Sports Illustrated, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, New York, Stern, Paris Match, and numerous other publications. He has covered 12 Olympic Games, and most major sporting events, some as a photographer and others as an editor. Parks and People is a photographic exploration of New Yorker’s relationship with their parks, green spaces and playgrounds. With 1,700 parks covering more than 30,000 acres, it is as much a social ecosystem as a natural one.

Free Opening Reception and Lecture

Both Gary Hershorn and Adam Stoltman will speak at 5 pm on Monday, December 13, followed by the free opening reception from 6:30 to 8 pm.

TBC Corporation Gives to Three Local Non-profits

Leader in the tire and automotive industry donates $30,000 in office furniture

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL — December 03, 2021 — TBC Corporation, a leader in the tire and automotive service industry with several trusted well-known brands, including retail brands Tire Kingdom Service Centers and  NTB Tire & Service Centers, and franchise brands Big O Tires and Midas, along with many companies around the world adopted new ways of working brought on by the pandemic.

The organization, headquartered in Palm Beach Gardens, took this opportunity to reimagine their office space reflecting a commitment to hybrid work and accommodating associates who work remotely. This provided an opportunity to re-home solid wood furniture – desks, credenzas, wall units, filing cabinets, conference room tables and chairs – which was donated to several local nonprofits, including Wounded Veterans Relief Fund (WVRF), Adopt-A-Family and Boys and Girls Club.

“Wounded Veterans Relief Fund is grateful and excited to receive this amazing furniture donation from TBC. Our office furniture desperately needed an upgrade. Thank you!” stated Mike Durkee, Executive Director for WVRF whose mission is to provide emergency financial assistance and professional services to qualified Florida disabled veterans in order to save lives and keep families together.

WVRF was founded in 2009 and has proudly built a history and reputation for placing veterans first. During October 2021 alone, the organization was able to assist 54 veterans and 107 of their spouses and children providing assistance for housing, emergency vehicle expenses and dental assistance across the state of Florida.

“A huge thank you to TBC Corporation for such a generous contribution,” said Adopt-A-Family CEO Matt Constantine. “This donation of office furniture is a big help to our agency and ultimately our mission.”

Adopt-A-Family of the Palm Beaches’ mission is to support families with children in their efforts to achieve stability and self-sufficiency by providing access to all-encompassing services. To achieve its mission, the agency provides an emergency shelter, 112 housing units, rental assistance, case management, afterschool care for elementary school students, mental health services, and job coaching.

Furniture was also donated to three Boys & Girls Clubs centers in Riviera Beach, replacing pieces that needed to be refreshed. Project Fathers And Children Together (FACT) is a Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County program that helps fathers become more involved in their children’s lives and also helps to strengthen relationships in the community.

Project FACT Manager, Shamus Gordon said, “Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County’s Project FACT is grateful for the generous donation of office furniture from TBC. It’s such partnership between for profit and not for profit organizations that help to strengthen the social fabric of local community. Thanks, TBC for your contributions!” said Shamus Gordon, Program Manager.

The donation aims to support TBC’s corporate social responsibility (CSR), an integral component of the corporation and all business units spanning retail, franchise, wholesale, distribution and ecommerce. Delivering on one of the company’s core values – leave everything better, TBC re-homed office furniture with a replacement value of approximately $30,000.

“We feel strongly about supporting our local communities,” said Brian Maciak, EVP, General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer of TBC Corporation, who oversees social responsibility. “We are thrilled to promote sustainability by extending the useful life of our furniture while helping these non-profit organizations accommodate growth and the services they provide by furnishing their spaces.”
