(West Palm Beach, FL – June 24, 2021) Friends of the Mounts Botanical Garden will be hosting 20 outstanding open-air events in July for people of all ages, including art classes, Orchid Trilogy, Dogs’  Day in the Garden, and the comprehensive Windows Into Wellness Series (Meditation, Qi Gong, Reiki, Walks, and Yoga).

“Palm Beach County’s oldest and largest botanical garden is inviting garden enthusiasts, plant lovers, and proud ‘green-thumbers’ of all ages to come out and enjoy some of our many safe, healthy and happy horticultural activities in July, including our always popular Orchid Trilogy,” says Mounts Curator-Director Rochelle Wolberg.

Orchid Repotting and Orchid Mounting Techniques

Saturday, 10 am to 1 pm

Learn how to repot an orchid, how often should it be repotted, the different potting media to use, and the proper pot or basket to use. Also learn how orchids can be mounted on items such as cork, a tree fern or a branch.

Training Your eye – Orchid Pests

Saturday, 10 am to 1 pm

Learn about pests and diseases that can affect orchids. Bacteria, fungus and insects can all damage your orchids; learn how to spot them early and what to do if you find them. Students will learn how to identify the culprits, what products to use to get rid of them, and how to avoid them in the future. Orchids and Orchid leaves can be brought in for diagnosis, but must be placed inside a sealed plastic bag to prevent contamination of other plants.

The Summer Nature & Art Classes at Mounts are perfect for sharing a love for art with fellow sketchers or painters. Join us for a Nature Walk with artist Marilyn Walter to collect photos from the gardens before moving indoors, where she will share how journals and sketchbooks are exciting tools for exploring nature. Ms. Walter will guide participants through the drawing process, showing how drawing explorations can be recorded and translated into a sketchbook journal.  Attendees should bring a sketchpad and favorite camera device (i.e., cell phone, camera, or tablet).

Summer Watercolor Journal Classes for Adults

Tuesdays, 10:45 am to Noon

Participants will explore and be inspired by the beautiful garden areas at Mounts. Following a Nature Walk with artist Marilyn Walter to collect photos from our gardens before moving indoors, she will guide attendees through the watercolor journal process. Please bring watercolor pads, journals, and favorite photographic device (i.e., cell phone camera or tablet).

Qi Gong

Registration is required; class size is limited to 15

Relieve stress and increase your metabolism, flexibility and strength.  Qi Gong (pronounced chee-gong) is an ancient Chinese exercise and healing technique. The exercises include simple, slow movements (which mimic nature), meditation and focused breathing — similar to Tai Chi. Each class will begin with a gentle walk to the Exhibit Hall, where participants will continue with the exercises. This Vinyasa yoga flow class will stimulate your senses by bringing awareness to all of them through movement. Meet at the front gate just before 9; instructor will walk the group through the Garden to the Exhibit Hall. This 1-hour class is for adults at all levels as modifications will be offered. Vinyasa is a physical practice that also awakens the mental and spiritual beings that we all are. Class will be led by Jess Pfeffer.

Reiki Healing Sound Bowls Meditation Class

Reiki is a powerful healing modality that helps to release energetic blockages, tension, stress, so people can connect with their higher self. The full moon helps us to surrender so we can return to our wholeness. During this event participants will be guided with full moon meditation, Reiki and sound healing. Class will meet at the front entrance and begin with a healing Garden walk to the Exhibit Hall, where we will end with intuitive insight for the collective to help attendees harness the energy of this full moon, and they will leave feeling harmonized and refreshed. Class is open to adults and will be led by Jessica Prestia.

Dogs’ Day in the Garden

This dog-and-family-friendly monthly event is held throughout the Garden. Bring your beloved pooch to enjoy a relaxed garden stroll. There are many great spots to capture family photos for posting online with #mountsbotanicalgarden.

Guidelines:

+ Non-retractable leashes only; retractable leashes are not permitted.

+ No more than one dog per adult will be admitted.

+ Rabies vaccination must be current.

+ Visitors should bring their own and water treats for the puppies.

KRAVIS CENTER PROVIDES 550 DISNEY KIDS CRAFT KITS TO 11 PALM BEACH COUNTY TITLE 1 ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

(West Palm Beach, FL.) – The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts recently made a very special delivery thanks to the support of Disney. Kravis education team members dropped off more than 500 craft kits to Title I elementary school students throughout Palm Beach County.

“At the Kravis Center, we’re committed to enriching the lives of students and educators in Palm Beach County and throughout South Florida by providing engaging and enlightening arts education programs,” said Tracy Butler, Director of Education for the Kravis Center. “The Kravis staff members delivered the craft kits to 11 Title I elementary schools as a way to keep the fun of Disney Musicals alive in the minds of the students and staff.”

Disney Musicals in Schools is an initiative developed by Disney Theatrical Productions to create sustainable musical theater programs in under-resourced elementary schools. An affiliate for DMIS since 2017, the Kravis Center’s participating schools have not been able to produce musicals for the past two years due to COVID-19 restrictions. After receiving a grant to reignite the Disney Musicals in Schools program, the Kravis Center prepared 550 Disney KIDS Craft kits which included supplies to create projects influenced by Lion King KIDS, 101 Dalmatians KIDS, The Jungle Book KIDS and Aladdin KIDS.

Schools served are located from Jupiter to Boynton Beach to Belle Glade and included: Galaxy E3 Elementary School, Jupiter Elementary School, South Grade Elementary School, Westward Elementary School, Egret Lake Elementary School, Forest Park Elementary School, Glade View Elementary School, Academy for Positive Learning, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School, Lincoln Elementary School and Meadow Park Elementary School.

PLACE OF HOPE PARTNERS WITH COMMUNITY LEADERS TO RENOVATE A FAMILY COTTAGE

BOCA RATON, FL – Place of Hope graciously received a donation from Rooms To Go to decorate the interior of a family cottage in its South County campus in partnership with International Materials Foundation.

The Genesis Cottage on the Leighan and David Rinker Campus has served 54 youth since inception and Place of Hope was thrilled to give it a refresh before a new family arrives. Thanks to the generosity of key Place of Hope supporters we were able to make much needed repairs and updates to this cottage that offers safe, affordable transitional and supportive housing for aged out foster youth, otherwise homeless youth and families and human trafficking survivors.

“This is the second year International Materials has partnered with Place of Hope and we could not be more thankful for their compassion for the homeless youth and moms in transition that this cottage serves,” said Charles Bender, Place of Hope Founding CEO. “Rooms To Go has been a faithful partner to our mission and we were impressed by their generous donation of new furniture for this cottage. We are so blessed by these key community partners that want to further the mission of Place of Hope.”

Rooms To Go supported this project by supplying all new beds and bedroom furniture for the cottage. The company provided new full-size beds, dressers, nightstands, and other bedroom essentials. “Rooms To Go has always felt a special affinity for organizations that help children,” said Janis Altshuler, Sr. Vice President at Rooms To Go. “We are delighted to partner with Place of Hope again this year and applaud their efforts in the Palm Beach County communities.”

Provision from International Materials Foundation’s grant allowed the Place of Hope team to make repairs and paint the cottage. International Materials staff also donated their time with fifteen volunteers who cleaned, decorated, and prepared this cottage to serve moms in transition. Tori Thomas with International Materials said, “Our foundation is a proud supporter of Place of Hope and everything they do here.”

THE LEVIS JCC SANDLER CENTER ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF 5th ANNUAL JUDY LEVIS KRUG BOCA RATON JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL (BRJFF)

Boca Raton, FL (June 17, 2021) – The Adolph & Rose Levis Jewish Community Center’s Phyllis & Harvey Sandler Center recently concluded its 5th Annual Judy Levis Krug Boca Raton Jewish Film Festival (BRJFF) and is pleased to announce this year’s winners. The virtual Festival, which ran from January 5 through May 16, featured a diverse collection of over 50 premiere films and 24 webinars and was considered one of the largest virtual Jewish Film Festivals in the country. 

The prize for Best Feature this year was awarded to The Good Traitor, a historical drama inspired by actual events. It is the thrilling story of one man’s impassioned resistance to the Nazis as World War II threatens to engulf all of Europe. Love It Was Not, the tragic story between Helena, a young Jewish prisoner in Auschwitz, and Austrian SS officer Franz Wunsch, won Best Documentary Film, and the 14-minute Israeli drama Only Bibi walked away with the win for Best Short Film.

“We were incredibly proud of our Festival’s line-up this year,” said Lesley Rich, BRJFF Program and Production Director. “Seeing these films get the recognition they deserve brings us tremendous excitement.” 

“This year proved that the industry is resilient and adaptable, and the demand for films that explore the Jewish experience is stronger than ever,” said Wendy Honig, BRJFF Artistic Director.

The 2022 Festival will be in theaters from February 27 – March 20 and is planned as an in-person Festival.

An escape room is a physical adventure game in which players are locked inside a room; they need to resolve a series of riddles and puzzles to escape but within a time limit. These are challenging as well as a great learning experience. It tests your problem-solving abilities in many ways. 

Escape room encourages teamwork and cooperation too. It is where relationships are made, and bonds grow stronger. Teams learn how to work together in critical situations. People get to know their teammates and determine more about them and even more about themselves. Escape room encourages teamwork and cooperation too.

The escape game experiences can be a great bonding opportunity for families as they play together to solve the mission while capitalizing on each other’s strengths. It allows them to spend some quality time together and smack the sac of fun. The non-profit Alliance of Women Executives (AWE) made the college dreams of 19 Palm Beach County young women come true. The organization awarded $28,500 in scholarships to 19 deserving high school graduates at the organization’s scholarship awards ceremony held May18th via Zoom.

These young women come from all walks of life, and with unique stories; 7 of the recipients will be attending Palm Beach State College, 6 will become Florida Atlantic University students, 2 will attend FAU Honors College and 4 will enter the FAU BSN Program – 6 are the first in their family to attend college, and all are accomplished both academically and in their service to the community. Their aspirations are equally ambitious, they plan to pursue a variety of degrees from nursing, law, and medicine to STEM, psychology and the arts.

AWE is a member based nonprofit founded 5 years ago by Vicki Tate. With the inclusion of the 2021 awards, a total of 55 scholarships have been granted to Palm Beach County young women.

“The passion of the women who’ve become AWE members along with the support of our donors has been fantastic. AWE’s mission is important to Palm Beach County, to these young women and to me. I am deeply grateful to our members and donors, without them none of this would be possible,” says AWE founder Vicki Tate.

Obtaining the extra funding alleviates some of the financial pressure the girls face as they seek their higher education. Below are excerpts from 2 of the emails AWE has received.

“I am beyond grateful for this opportunity and I want to thank the Board of Directors of AWE for choosing me for this scholarship. This scholarship has helped me avoid taking out loans or going into future debt. I am so blessed to have received this scholarship and thank you again for investing in my future”, writes Camila who will be attending FAU and studying to become a nurse.

“My name is Makayla and I will continue my studies at FAU Honors College with a major in Biological Sciences as well as follow the pre-med track. The AWE scholarship will reduce my financial burden from University fees and for that I am so grateful and appreciative! “

ABOUT THE ALLIANCE OF WOMEN EXECUTIVES (AWE)

AWE provides a platform to bring like-minded professional women together, sharing knowledge and experiences while making an impact on future generations of young women in Palm Beach County by promoting higher education and making it accessible through academic scholarships. Palm Health Foundation Grants Funding to Increase Health Equity for Breast and Cervical Cancer Care

West Palm Beach, FL Palm Health Foundation, Palm Beach County’s community foundation for health, has provided a grant to the Promise Fund of Florida to increase access to affordable breast and cervical health care services to women in need. The funding will support the hire of a “provider network recruiter” who will identify new and existing community resources to expand Promise Fund of Florida’s Continuum of Care Model throughout Palm Beach County to increase health equity and help reach its goal of ensuring all women, regardless of income, receive affordable, timely, high quality, breast and cervical screenings, diagnostics, treatment, and follow up care. Palm Health Foundation joins Quantum Foundation in jointly funding this new position.

The Promise Fund of Florida was co-founded by Nancy G. Brinker, founder of Susan G. Komen, Julie Fisher Cummings, and Laurie Silvers, three women who have spent decades working to improve quality of life for men and women of all socioeconomic backgrounds in many different areas of need. They founded the Promise Fund of Florida to fill the gaps in access to healthcare and help those in need in Palm Beach County to reduce the number of deaths due to late-stage breast and cervical cancer. Florida ranks last in the United States for the number of women under 65 who have insurance, magnifying their vulnerability to death from cancer because the lack of insurance delays diagnosis and treatment with catastrophic results.

The provider network recruiter will play a critical role in developing partnerships closest to target populations where multiple barriers to care exist, including transportation, language, finding childcare and taking time off from work. The Promise Fund has mapped imaging and screening facilities in Palm Beach County to identify gaps and serve as a blueprint for where the provider network recruiter will create partnerships for affordable cancer care services with physicians, clinics, hospitals, and other providers for Promise Fund participants. The goal is to identify a minimum of 15 health care providers to serve 300 or more women.

“The Promise Fund understands as we do that a person’s health outcomes depend just as much on her ZIP code as her DNA code,” said Patrick McNamara, president and CEO of Palm Health Foundation. “We also recognize the impact the provider network recruiter will have on health equity by creating systems change. Rather than expecting residents to find a way to get to healthcare systems, healthcare systems need to bring their services to the people, especially those with the greatest barriers.”

Palm Health Foundation is confident the new role is poised for success. With the Continuum of Care Model, the Promise Fund of Florida has already formed fundamental partnerships with Baptist Health South Florida, Caridad Center, Marie Louise Cancer Foundation, Community Health Center, Simply-Anthem, Hologic, FoundCare, Palm Beach County Medical Society, Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, Quantum Foundation, Uber Health, Genesis Community Center, Florida Atlantic University School of Nursing, the Northwest Community Health Alliance, and the Health Care District. Through their Patient Navigator Network, which has six partners, over 5,000 women have received outreach and education, and over 1,000 have benefited from navigation services. The provider network recruiter will also work closely with the Promise Fund’s patient navigator coordinator who guides women who have abnormal findings, through the health care system to reduce deaths due to late-stage breast and cervical cancer.

This Promise Fund grant is Palm Health Foundation’s second funding opportunity in recent years to focus on access to women’s cancer care. In 2020, the foundation joined with Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties to provide a grant to Susan G. Komen from its Helen and Harold Bernstein Endowment Fund and Frank & Jennie M. Palen Cancer Support Fund to support a community breast health navigator position in the Glades.

“We are proud to partner with Palm Beach County foundations to support women’s health,” said McNamara. “With almost 2,000 women in Palm Beach County diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer each year, we know the impact on saving lives through our funding is significant,” said McNamara. “No matter where a woman lives, her race or her circumstances, she deserves the care that could save her life.”

WEST PALM BEACH, FL – June 16, 2021 – Ferd & Gladys Alpert Jewish Family Service’s Melvin J. & Claire Levine LifePlanning® program invites people with disabilities, their parents, siblings and caregivers to attend a free virtual workshop to learn about APD: Agency for Persons with Disabilities, and the services and supports that they offer, on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at 2:00 p.m.

Mary Edwards from APD Cares will be the featured guest speaker, covering topics such as eligibility for APD services and iBudget Waiver, the referral and application process, and crisis Medicaid Waiver enrollment. The subject is extremely timely, as Florida’s lawmakers have agreed to spend an additional $95 million annually to provide more people with intellectual and developmental disabilities the access they need to live in communities rather than facilities. This increased funding for the iBudget waiver – the largest funding increase in recent history – will help reduce the iBudget waiting list.

“Sometimes applying for benefits can seem complicated or overwhelming,” said Alpert JFS Director of LifePlanning® Tami Lustig, MSW. “Our goal is to simplify things for community members and provide them with knowledge and easy access to tools needed to assist in best planning for the future.”

Upcoming workshops include “Being the Best Advocate for you and Your Family,” and “Mental Health First Aid” training, with the topics of “Home and Community-based Services,” “Education; Secondary Transition Services and Post-High School Options,” “Caring for the Caregiver,” and “Recreation, Socialization and Independence Skills” under consideration.
