Koalafied Cuteness! Palm Beach Zoo Announces Exciting New Animal Addition

0

Zoo welcomes Queensland Koala Sydney

WEST PALM BEACH, FL – April 14, 2021 – What has short greyish fur, a boopable nose and the cutest ears you have ever seen? The answer is the latest addition to Palm Beach Zoo’s animal family. Sydney, aptly named after the largest city in Australia, is a two-year-old Queensland koala who has made his way to his new home in West Palm Beach! Sydney is a special new addition, as he is the nephew of both former Zoo koala residents, Oz and Katherine.

Sydney was born at Zoo Tampa in 2018 to parents, Heathcliff (Oz’s brother) and Ceduna (Katherine’s sister). Like all koalas, he spent more than a year with his mom learning all the necessary koala skills, and then it was time to go out on his own. At the same time, Palm Beach Zoo had experienced the loss of the beloved Oz and Katherine and was ready to welcome a new koala.

Koalas are important to Palm Beach Zoo as they help connect visitors with their wild cousins.

“Connecting people to wildlife locally and around the world is the main mission of zoos. We get to inspire people to care for and about the wild, so it will thrive for future generations,” said Palm Beach Zoo President and CEO Margo McKnight. “Having an incredibly cute koala to help share that message only helps our cause!”

Koala Forest, in the Islands section of Palm Beach Zoo, is Sydney’s new home. It features three indoor bedroom spaces with environmental controls to mimic the conditions in the wild and two outdoor yards. One yard is shared with fellow Australian wildlife, a kookaburra pair, and the other features an expansive yard with plenty of room to roam.

“We are so thankful to our fellow zoologists at Zoo Tampa for the love, attention and care they gave to Sydney. He is a joy, and he came to us with a great foundation of behaviors to aid in his own care,” said zoologist Tabbitha Beckens. “The guests are fully enjoying watching him as he moves about the bedrooms freely and eating heartily like a teenage boy.”

Palm Beach Zoo is looking to welcome a potential mate for Sydney as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan® (SSP). The SSP ensures a genetically healthy population of animals for the future.

The plight of koalas in the wild was impacted greatly by the 2019 Black Summer bushfire in Australia. It caused immense damage to the natural ecosystem and the koala population. These fires made their endangered status even more tenuous. Still today, many wildlife conservation champions, including Zoos Victoria, are working to rehabilitate and return injured koalas to their natural habitats. It is estimated more than three billion native animals were injured or killed in the bushfires.

Sydney can be seen every day in Koala Forest, during operating hours; 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. A visit to the Zoo helps save wildlife in wild places by supporting the animals in its care and the work of the zoologists in the field. Visit www.palmbeachzoo.org today to learn more.

Charlie & Joe’s at Love Street Supports a Sustainable Environment

Jupiter, Fla. (April 15, 2021) – On Earth Day and every day, the team at Charlie & Joe’s at Love Street promotes environmentally friendly practices to help preserve the planet. The Jupiter destination is committed to protecting our air, water, and wildlife.

Located on the Jupiter Inlet, Charlie & Joe’s at Love Street has an ocean-first mentality. Not only does the team at Charlie & Joe’s at Love Street participate in regular beach cleanups, they support 4ocean’s mission to end the ocean plastics crisis. The Tacklebox sells 4ocean bracelets that come with the promise to pull 1 pound of trash from the oceans, rivers, and coastlines for every sale.

“We started the beach cleanups before we even opened. In the first three months, we removed more than 180 gallons of trash and debris from the beach,” said Liz Soulen, director of operations at Charlie & Joe’s at Love Street. “We are part of the community and we want to do our part to protect our local waters.”

Lessing’s Hospitality Group, which manages Charlie & Joe’s at Love Street and the Pelican Club, established a company-wide #dogood initiative, which includes using locally sourced products, supporting food banks, participating in clean ocean programs, and prohibiting the use of plastic straws. Charlie & Joe’s at Love Street endorses the approach using 100% compostable straws made from corn at all four venues.

Visitors at Charlie & Joe’s at Love Street will find electric vehicle parking stations on the property. Inside the restaurants, guests enjoy Vero Water. The pure, crisp, filtered water is served in reusable bottles. Locally sourced ingredients from Kai-Kai Farm in Indiantown and Swank Specialty Produce mean every dish is a practice in sustainability.

Observe Earth Day at Charlie & Joe’s at Love Street, where commitment to the environment is as clear as the view of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse.

South Florida Science Center and Aquarium Announces Summer Exhibit: Dinosaur Revolution

(West Palm Beach, Fla.) – The South Florida Science Center announces its summer exhibit, Dinosaur Revolution, roaring into West Palm Beach on April 24 through November 28. The popular exhibit is presented by Minotaur Mazes, the same company that produced Rainforest Adventure, a Science Center favorite which ran in 2019. Ranging over 2,500-square-feet in the Center’s main exhibit hall, Dinosaur Revolution will give visitors an exciting in-depth look at one of their favorite topics, and the opportunity to puzzle and problem-solve while stepping into the skin of their favorite dinosaur.

“This powerful combination of role-play and study creates an unforgettable experience that will inspire older visitors to take a fresh look at this prehistoric topic and encourage young visitors to look to the future as they learn more about this fascinating subject,” said Kate Arrizza, President and CEO of the Science Center. “We are still upholding strict cleaning and social distancing practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since reopening on Memorial Day weekend 2020, we have not had a single case of the virus throughout our programming. Safety is paramount and we can’t wait to welcome visitors to this fun and educational exhibit – along with our acres of outdoor activities and programming.”

At Dinosaur Revolution, visitors will be able to live large with reptilian role-play activities, undertake three Mesozoic missions spanning 150 years and mimic dinosaur behavior. Junior paleontologists will navigate the giant maze and learn why dinosaurs are one of the most successful survivors in Earth’s history. Dino hunters young and old can debunk myths and learn about new discoveries, dig for fossils through the time periods and even make tracks by slipping on life-size dinosaur feet.

The mission of the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is to “open every mind to science” and the indoor/outdoor venue features more than 100 hands-on educational exhibits, a 10,000 gallon fresh and salt water aquarium, digital planetarium, Pre-K focused “Discovery Center,” 18-hole conservation-themed Mini Golf Course and quarter mile long outdoor science trail. The newest addition includes a $2.5 million permanent exhibit, “Journey Through the Human Brain” and features the most advanced neuroscience research and technology in the world. Safety guidelines like social distancing and mask wearing are enforced.

The Science Center is also one of the first to obtain a Global Biorisk Advisory Council® (GBAC) STAR™ accreditation, the gold standard for prepared facilities. Under the guidance of GBAC, a Division of ISSA, the worldwide cleaning industry association, the Center now implements the most stringent protocols for cleaning, disinfection and infectious disease prevention throughout the facility.

Admission to the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium during Dinosaur Revolution is $17.95 for adults, $13.95 for children ages 3 to 12 and $15.95 for seniors aged 60 and older. Science Center members and children under 3 are free.

For more information on Dinosaur Revolution or other Science Center programming, call 561-832-1988 or visit www.sfsciencecenter.org. Like the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium on Facebook and follow on Twitter and Instagram @SFScienceCenter.

The Ultimate Gay Polo Tournament Delivers Fast-Paced Fun Socially Distant And Friendly Competition

0

Wellington, Fla. – With socially distanced and safe precautions in place, the LEXUS International Gay Polo Tournament presented by Douglas Elliman Real Estate  was a rousing success

. Loaded with safe, socially distanced, frivolity, fun, fanciful attire and fancy footwork by ponies and party people alike, it was a day of celebration. On March 27, history was made – the Senator Cup Final was played on Field 1 of the International Polo Club Palm Beach for the first time.  Another first, both teams competing in the Senator Cup Finals were all LGBTQ+ polo players!

For the 11th annual celebration, horses galloped down the field, champagne corks were popped on the sidelines, and fierce competition – both on the field, and off for the renowned tailgate contest – was second to none. High-flying mallets swung by players of all skill levels carried the day, and a spirit of inclusion helped to even the scores. On a day that applauded not only safe practices and good sportsmanship and, more importantly, love, diversity, inclusion, and equality, everyone was a winner.

The final score of the heavily contested match was 8 to 6; Cherry Knoll Farm took home the coveted Senator’s Cup trophy with players Andres La Placette, Gustavo Larrosa, Ryan Cronin-Prather, and Peter Secor, with MVP honors to Ryan Cronin-Prather. First Republic Bank was the runner up team, consisting of Tiffany Busch, Agustin Arellano, Adrian Pia, and Scott Hartzel with Best Playing Pony awarded to Lucia, owned by Tiffany Busch. The action was open and fast in front of a sold out VIP pavilion sponsored by Cherry Knoll Farm. Spectators also watched from their festive and COVID-compliant tailgates. Fun and games continued with the tailgate awards with Best in Show top honors to FlockFest!

In the earlier match, the GPL Futures Cup Finals was played on IPC’s Ilsa Carrol Field East. GJ Racing, with players John Gobin, Tareq Shalani, Darrell Gabel, and Miguel Wilson, won, and Provident Jewelers was the runner up with Hector Galindo, Bruce Schreiber, and Aimee Waters. The Futures Cup Finals score was 4-3.  GJ Racing’s Darrell Gabel scored the winning goal in a tense shoot-out.

“To have two all gay teams play on IPC’s Field 1 was an extraordinary happening.  GPL has come so far and continues to evolve into a highly competitive league and when polo clubs, like IPC, offer us their best field, it is a thrill!” said Chip McKenney, GPL President and Founder. “We are so appreciative to all who supported our event this year. Last year threw us a curve ball, so this year was special for GPL. Thank you to all the players, professionals, sponsors and spectators for bringing our event to life.”

The Gay Polo League (GPL) celebrated the 11th anniversary of its unique polo event this year, and expectations were high to make it the most memorable and safe event in 2021. As GPL is a platform for human rights, the “GPL Polotini Presents ‘Mask-erade’ Party!” kickoff party on Friday, March 26, was a fundraiser for SAGE, the nation’s oldest and largest organization dedicated to serving and advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) elders.

The event would not have worked without the tremendous and tenacious sponsors who helped pull together a wonderful, safe, and much-needed event during the ongoing COVID pandemic.  Team sponsors First Republic Bank,   GJ Racing, and Provident Jewelers plus, Hotel at Sea/Celebrity Cruise for sponsoring the GPL specialty Tailgate Competition, were also key to the success of the weekend.

As future planning for GPL 2022 is underway, please reach out to www.gaypolo.com or contact Chip McKenney at chip@gaypolo.com for more information or sponsorship opportunities.

On the Same Ground

0

By Bryan Haze

We all stand on the same ground

Staring up at the same stars that fill the night sky

We all share in the same air

Taking in the warmth of the sun’s rays

We all need water

To sustain life

We may not all stand on the same grounds

Staring up wishing upon the same stars that fill the night sky

We all don’t breathe in the same air

Or, take in the the sun’s rays

We all don’t drink water

To sustain life

We all stand on the same Earth

Staring up at the same blue hue that fills the day sky

We all share in the same air

Taking in the comfort of the cloud’s reprieve

We all need light

To sustain life

We may not stand in unison on Earth

Staring up as some blue is hidden as the clouds fill the day sky

We don’t all swallow the same air

Or, view the blue hue as something of a dream

We don’t all need the same light

To sustain life
