WELLINGTON GARDEN CLUB WINS STATE, REGIONAL AND NATIONAL AWARDS

Wellington Garden Club (WGC) members were delighted to learn recently that the club received five first place awards from Florida Federation of Garden Clubs (FFGC), one first place award from Deep South Garden Clubs (DS) and one first place award from National Garden Clubs (NGC) for a wide variety of projects the club had undertaken during the past year.

National Garden Week Awards

The FFGC, DS and NGC awards are presented each year to garden clubs in recognition of the contributions these clubs have made to their communities while promoting the goals and objectives of the state, regional and national garden club organizations. Wellington Garden Club’s projects earning first place awards from FFGC included the installation of the Blue Star Memorial Marker at Wellington’s Veterans Park; the celebration of National Garden Week throughout Wellington; a special children’s program at Village Park as part of National Garden Week; and a unique presentation by Al Salopek called “Bee Understanding” that helps elementary school students understand the importance of bees in our environment.

WGC also received a first place award from Deep South Garden Clubs for the Blue Star Memorial Marker installation and a first place award from National Garden Clubs, Inc. for the National Garden Week celebration. According to Jan Seagrave, WGC President, “It is a great honor that our club’s dedication and hard work within the community have been recognized with these awards.” Added District X Director Carol Coleman, “The support and appreciation our club receives from the community are what make all this possible.”

Wellington Garden Club, established in 1982, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to further the education of members and the public in the fields of gardening, horticulture, botany, floral design, landscape design, conservation of natural resources, civic beautification and to instill in our youth the love of gardening and the respect and protection of the environment.  The club currently meets via Zoom on the first Monday of each month. Spookyville 2020 takes on a new twist

Spookyville to celebrate in a new and different way

 

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The organizers of Spookyville, which takes place annually at Yesteryear Village at the South Florida Fairgrounds, have created a way for the little ones to still get their Halloween fill in a safe and fun way.

Because of COVID-19 concerns, Spookyville will be handled as a drive-through event from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 6 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, October 23-31, at the South Florida Fairgrounds, 9067 Southern Blvd.

 

Known as one of the best family-friendly Halloween events in the Palm Beaches, the event will operate much like the Fair Eats Drive Thru events that the fair offered in July and September. The difference is that this drive through will come alive with entertainment, not-so-spooky décor, and costumed volunteers who will be offering treats and big smiles to the children as they pass by in their cars.

 

“We are encouraging the kids to still dress up in their favorite Halloween costumes for a safe and socially distanced drive through while trick or treating,” said Lorie Stinson, the fair’s exhibits and special events manager.

 

The cost is $25 per vehicle. All passengers must be safely wearing seat belts. Children will be able to enjoy a slow cruise as they enjoy friendly faces, familiar songs, Halloween vignettes, actors, dancers, and lots of candy, while staying in the safety of their car the entire time.

 

“Your young ones will be leaving safely and soundly with smiling faces and a trick-or-treat bag,” added Stinson.

 

After the Spookyville ride, families may take advantage of Fair Eats & Treats, too, which will feature fair food and sweets available for purchase.

 

Spookyville sponsors include Coca-Cola, Storm Tight Windows, Florida Dairy Farmers and Baptist Health South Florida.

DELRAY BEACH, FL – Museums are defined by their collections, each with a unique point of view that is carefully shaped by the mission and vision of the institution. The Morikami Museum is devoted specifically to the acquisition, research, preservation, and exhibition of the story of Sukeji “George” Morikami and the Yamato Colony committed broadly to the visual culture created by Japanese and Japanese Americans. The result of this effort over more than 40 years is not just a catalog of objects, rather a collection of diverse ideas and unique stories illuminated by the objects.

 

Collecting Stories focuses on works drawn from the Morikami’s Permanent Collection and featured in vignettes, or mini exhibitions, representing diverse perspectives for interpreting the narrative of any object (or groups of objects). Explore how Japanese visual culture has reflected changes in society, politics, and modernization. Learn how everyday functional objects can express deep spirituality. Observe how some Japanese artists have responded to international influences over the past 400 years. Consider how the lives of Japanese Americans like George Morikami have impacted non-Japanese communities. In addition, the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens will highlight the positive ways in which it is contributing to a deeper understanding of the Japanese culture through its collecting and exhibition strategies.

Collecting Stories is on display from November 14, 2020 through April 3, 2021.

IMPACT 100 PALM BEACH COUNTY SEEKING NONPROFITS FOR UPCOMING GRANT YEAR

Letters of Intent for high-impact grants are due on October 24

(BOCA RATON, FL.) – Impact 100 Palm Beach County is calling all nonprofit organizations in southern Palm Beach County, between Boca Raton and Lake Worth, to apply for a high-impact grant for the 2020 – 2021 calendar year. Local programs that will be considered should foster positive long-term change; be a new project, expansion or improvement of an existing project; be well-structured and well-thought-out; and impact beneficiaries with great focus. The deadline to submit is October 24 by midnight.

 

Since its inception, Impact 100 PBC has awarded more than $3.8 million in grants to 68 local nonprofits. For the 2020 grant year, the organization had 565 members and was able to grant $565,000 to nonprofits in southern Palm Beach County.

 

“Impact 100 Palm Beach County has strict guidelines in place that nonprofits must complete to be eligible to compete for funding,” said Kathy Adkins, President of Impact 100 PBC. “During the 2019-2020 grant cycle, 110 grant applications were received – meaning that more than $11 million in grant requests came through our doors. There is a huge need in our community!”

 

Impact 100 PBC is a women’s 501c3 nonprofit organization funding local nonprofit initiatives. It is comprised of a growing number of women who donate $1,000 annually, pool all funds and vote to award multiple $100,000 grants to nonprofits in five focus areas: Arts, Culture and Historic Preservation; Education; Environment and Animal Welfare; Family; and Health and Wellness.

Catch a killer from your couch with Wellington’s Virtual “Whodunnit” Murder Mystery Party on Friday, November 6th, at 7:00 PM, sponsored by Florida Blue Medicare. Fun, engaging, and memorable – this is one virtual party you’ll be dying to attend.

When a mysterious murder occurs during a virtual Zoom party, it’s up to the attendees to piece together the clues and identify the suspect! Will your team be able to sleuth the truth or will our corrupt user go undetected? Join us to find out!

This event may not be appropriate for all audiences and is generally recommended for ages 10 and up. While this is a family-friendly, comedy style event, adult content is to be expected (someone dies after all). Parents, please use discretion when determining whether your children attend. Participants under 18 MUST log on with a parent or guardian.

Attendees are invited to help “set the scene” by dressing in their favorite cocktail attire.

Tax Collector Gannon Offers Commemorative Lapel Pins to Palm Beach County’s Vietnam Veterans

Special pins mark 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War

West Palm Beach, Fla. – Constitutional Tax Collector Anne M. Gannon is pleased to offer commemorative lapel pins to Palm Beach County’s Vietnam veterans as a special recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.

“It is my honor to recognize our veterans, especially as our country marks the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War,” said Gannon. “We must never forget their service and sacrifice.”

 

Designed by the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration, a program authorized by Congress, the lapel pins are available to anyone who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces between Nov. 1, 1955, and May 15, 1975,
regardless of location.

 

Veterans may request a lapel pin by submitting a form online at www.pbctax.com. Family members may also request a lapel on behalf of a veteran. The lapel pin will be mailed along with Gannon’s personal note of thanks.

 

Gannon has partnered with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to make the pins available now through Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2020.

Boca Raton Center for Arts & Innovation to Update Boca Raton City Council on Project Evolution

The idea announced in 2018 is making strides in community interest

BOCA RATON, Fla. — (October 8, 2020) — On October 13th at 1:30 p.m., the Board of Boca Raton Center for Arts & Innovation will be updating the Boca Raton City Council on their project development after receiving unanimous conceptual approval from Council in 2019.

The concept for the Boca Raton Center for Arts & Innovation (The Center) was announced by the Boca Raton Arts District Exploratory Corp (BRADEC) in 2018 as a strategic plan to create a hub of culture & entertainment for the Boca Raton community at the north end of Mizner Park, fulfilling a promise made to residents decades ago when Mizner was first developed. BRADEC will request that Council ask their staff to work with BRADEC on the formal documents securing City partnership on the project. This includes a 99/year ground lease for $1, continuation of the City’s current annual allocation for Amphitheater activities, & some appropriate shared services.

 

The Center’s focal point is a multi-form main theatre that is fully equipped with state-of-the-art audiovisual technology & can accommodate up to 1,100 patrons. The shape-shifting architecture of the Main Theatre enables several layouts including retractable seating for a flexible flat floor configuration, allowing for galas, corporate events & conventions focused on the creative industries. This flexibility makes it one of the first of its kind in this region of the US.

 

The Center will also infuse major capital into the existing amphitheater to greatly improve the experience for up to 3,500 attendees through improved amenities, access, parking, ticketing, seating, & weather-proofing with an iconic permanent canopy for shade & weather protection. This canopy has been designed to provide a “third space” by making a space that is outdoors feel indoors through innovative kinetic elements that cool the space. The improvements to the existing venue will also include a “structural curtain” to close the front of the amphitheater, enabling the space to be transformed into an additional climate-controlled performance, event & immersive media space that seats up to 450.

 

The entry to the Center will feature a host of public amenities, including an “Innovation Plaza,” protected from the elements by an extension of the overhead Canopy. The Center’s “Community Center” includes an incubator & workshop space with adjoining cafe storefront, & a signature, freestanding staircase that connects the Plaza level with “cloud corridors” & leads to the Main Theatre’s Balcony level. This Community Center also features a Large Rehearsal Studio that converts into a 99-seat, jewel box performance, education & event space, & is adaptable as a banquet or conference room for private functions.  Lastly, an outdoor lobby & rooftop terrace provides space for performances, corporate networking events, & a casual environment where the community can gather, as well as the addition of a six-story parking garage to accommodate the new venues.

 

Built on a plan that means business, the Center, as a whole, will drive over half a million new annual visitors to Boca Raton, support more than 12,000 jobs, produce over $240M in local spending by tourists & retained locals, & infuse over $1.3B in overall economic impact into the community.

 

“The City of Boca Raton has almost every desirable amenity for its residents, businesses & tourists,” says President of the BRADEC Board, Andrea Virgin. “But the one component that has been out of step is our cultural infrastructure. We hope to resolve this gap by delivering future-forward venues that address the opportunities of our times & anticipate the needs of future generations of residents, artists, & businesses.”

 

Next steps for the project include another meeting with Council in early 2021 to approve the formal partnership. Following that approval, BRADEC would commence fundraising in earnest, in conjunction with further planning & design, with the goal of opening the new Center at the end of 2025 — which happens to be the same year of the City’s centennial — or early 2026.

 

“How wonderful would it be for our City to celebrate its past 100 years as we look ahead to the next 100 with a next-century piece of infrastructure?” added Virgin.

WEST PALM BEACH, FL – October 8, 2020 – Ferd & Gladys Alpert Jewish Family Service (Alpert JFS) has an exciting line-up of events for the 2020-2021 season, from a virtual benefit for Holocaust survivors, to raising awareness about abuse, and its first scheduled on-site event for this season, the inaugural Alpert Cup Golf Tournament and Auction.

On December 3, 2020, the agency’s annual “Never Again” Holocaust Survivors Benefit will be online from 7:00-8:00 p.m. The featured guest will be Matthew Orton, writer and co-producer of “Operation Finale” which is based on the true story of the team of secret agents sent to track down Nazi Officer Adolf Eichmann in Argentina, his arrest, and subsequent trial in Israel. Skip Randolph and Maggie Zeidman, chair and co-chair, respectively, of Palm Beach Fellowship of Christians and Jews are event honorees.

 

On February 16, 2021, the virtual 17th Annual “No Excuse for Abuse” (NEFA) event will be held from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Abduction survivor, advocate, author and foundation founder Elizabeth Smart will be the keynote speaker. Attendees will have the opportunity to shop online, with a percentage of proceeds donated to Alpert JFS.

 

On April 15, 2021, the Inaugural Alpert Cup Golf Tournament and Auction will be held at High Ridge Country Club, 2400 Hypoluxo Road in Lake Worth. The golf event will be from 1:00-5:00 p.m. with play, a boxed lunch and cocktail hour, followed by an auction/cocktail party from 5:30-7:00 p.m., featuring Artist/Entertainer Michael Israel.

 

The “Never Again” and “No Excuse for Abuse” events will have no couvert, though the agency is asking the community to help us reach a fundraising goal of at least $360,000 towards the 2020-21 Annual Campaign, in connection with these two programs.
