September Marks Hunger Action Month; TBC Corporation Does its Part to Help by Extending Warehouse Space Use to Feeding South Florida

Leader in the tire and automotive aftermarket services industry continues to
invest in communities during unprecedented times

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL – September 10, 2020 – As cars continue to line up for food donations around South Florida due to unemployment and food insecurity, the month of September marks Hunger Action Month, a month where people across the country stand together to fight hunger. More specifically, today, September 10, marks Hunger Action Day, a day where efforts across the country are focused for greater hunger-fighting impact.

Palm Beach Gardens based TBC Corporation, the parent company to Tire Kingdom Service Centers, NTB Tire & Service Centers, Big O Tires and Midas, has joined in the effort by extending the original agreement of its donation of a 24,000-square-foot facility to Feeding South Florida to use for overflow of dry food. The warehouse, located in Pembroke Park, is an unused distribution center location for TBC Corporation.

“TBC Corporation has a long-standing commitment to supporting community efforts across the country,” said Erik R. Olsen, President & CEO of TBC Corporation. “As COVID-19 continues to impact our communities, we’re proud to continue to provide this much-needed resource for our local community in partnership with Feeding South Florida.”

An integral part of TBC and all business units spanning retail, franchise, wholesale, distribution, ecommerce and corporate shared services is corporate social responsibility (CSR). In fact, one of the company’s core values focuses on it — leave everything better. The company has initiatives that are driven by the company as well as initiatives that are Associate-driven, all communicated to associates via a formalized program called TBC Driven To Give (#TBCDrivenToGive).

Building on the underlying foundation of being TBC Driven to Give, the company continues to express appreciation for fellow members of essential business via exclusive discounts at more than 600 Tire Kingdom and NTB locations while also offering customers curbside and stay-in-car service for air pressure check, battery check and installation, fluid check and top-off, and wiper blade replacement.

Wellington and Royal Palm, It’s Almost Time for PapiChulo Tacos

Wellington and Royal Palm, It’s Almost Time for PapiChulo Tacos

ROYAL PALM BEACH, FL – The opening is planned for mid-October, the kitchen is heating up and the patio is ready to party (safe and social distanced, of course) as PapiChulo Tacos prepares to open the doors of their second location. After a short delay caused by the pandemic, the trio-of childhood amigos, Scott Frielich, Angelo Abbenate, and Cleve Mash, are excited to have their chef-driven, Mexican street-style concept open at 1005 N. State Road 7 in Royal Palm Beach, FL.

With influences from Baja, California as well as South, Central and Latin America, the design will be a collaboration of all three partners and will have a laid back, beach-style feel. PapiChulo’s Royal Palm Beach location will be roomier than its sister restaurant with 3,200 feet and filled with 150 seats split between indoor and outdoor areas, an outside, kid-friendly patio complete with games like corn hole, ring toss, ping pong and giant Jenga set up for fun on artificial turf, and an expansive bar. With extra care in place, the restaurant will be going above and beyond all spacing and cleansing procedures to keep guests and staff safe.

The restaurant will serve fresh juices, top-notch tequila, handmade craft cocktails, and house-made tortilla chips. Hungry patrons can look forward to eats such as Smoked Brisket Nachos ($13.50) topped with refried beans, pickled red onions, jalapeno, queso fresco, cilantro, sour cream and scallions ($13.50). Ten different taco selections, priced from $3.50 to $5 each, will be offered with options such as the Pescado with blackened or fried local-caught fish with slaw, pineapple pico de gallo, cilantro, avocado crema and radish, or the always-popular Carne Asada with skirt steak, chimichurri, queso fresco, cilantro, sweet peppers, red cabbage, radish and scallions. Don’t sleep on the Puerco taco filled with pork shoulder, red cabbage, jicama, sweet peppers, cilantro, scallions and aji amarillo. Larger appetites will love the Chicken Mole made with a roasted half chicken, brussels, sweet peppers and mushrooms ($18.50). Be warned; no one can resist the Mexican Donuts dusted with cinnamon and sugar and filled with leche condensada ($9) or the homemade Caramel Flan flavored with coconut and mint ($7.5). Vegetarian and gluten-free options will also be available.

The partners, all with the common love of Florida beaches, tacos and tequila, have an impressive track record of opening and running successful local establishments: Abbenante with Lynora’s Italian Restaurants; Frielich with Dada, Kapow!, Dubliner, Howley’s, and Lost Weekend; and Mash with Pawn Shop, Dirty Martini, Dr. Feelgood’s and one of the longest running nightclubs on Clematis, Monkey Club. They decided to follow their passion and join together to open the first PapiChulo Tacos together in December of 2018 in Jupiter, Fl. And, though combined they’ve opened of over 25 locations throughout South Florida, it will be their first venture west in Palm Beach County.

PapiChulo Tacos Royal Palm Beach location is slated to open in mid-October with  lunch and dinner service. Dine in, or order take out, either way you won’t want to miss the daily happy hour specials, Taco Tuesday or a Margarita Monday.

For those who can’t wait until the opening of PapiChulo Tacos Royal Palm Beach, the Jupiter location is currently open seven days a week for lunch, dinner and a new weekend brunch.  Visit papichulostacos.com for more info and follow PapiChuloTacos Royal Palm Beach on social media for the latest updates.

We Will Stand

WE WILL STAND

By Virginia Guido

My Dearest Sara,

Today is Tuesday, September 11, 2001, the year of your birth. As you remain drifting innocently in your mother’s womb, I am sitting next to her, writing about the most horrific event in the history of our country. I still don’t know you, but I am recording all this for your benefit.

Right now, your mother and I are taking shelter at a Good Samaritan’s house in New Jersey, since we cannot return to New York. Your mom is patting her belly, reassuring you, but worried about your dad, a police officer.

Let me go back to the beginning of our day for you. This morning, your mom and I were on our way to a Space Exploration Simulation seminar in New Jersey. Ironically, we were going to revisit the 1986 voyage of the ill-fated Challenger and “complete” the mission of gathering and analyzing gasses from Haley’s Comet.

It was a beautiful fall day; the sky was blue, and the bright puffy clouds were indicators that the sun would shine on us all day. We arrived at the space center where an instructor dressed in a flight suit briefed us and took us to our “class.”

Within five minutes, that same person returned, announcing that a small aircraft had just hit the World Trade Center. Since this is a simulation workshop based on a tragic setting, we thought this was our assignment; calibrate survivors from the impact. Consequently, another instructor entered the room to report that a second plane had just hit the remaining tower. We still didn’t understand the severity of the situation and continued to work on our calculations.

“People,” the first instructor said, “this is really happening. Both World Trade Center Towers have been hit. We don’t have a TV here, but you can watch it on our computers.”

It was starting to dawn on us. I called my husband to confirm this information. “Are the Towers really on fire?” I asked him.

“No,” he said.

I turned to the rest of the people and told them that the WTC Towers were not on fire.

Then I heard him say, “They’re gone, Babe.”

“What’s gone?”

“The Towers. They just collapsed. They’re not there anymore.”

I clicked off my phone and told everyone that the World Trade Center Towers were no longer standing tall. They were now reduced to rubble.

At this, your mom began to worry. “We have to get home,” she said.

She was seven months pregnant with you and stressing about her unborn baby and your father.

Well, Sara, we weren’t going home this day. All bridges to New York were closed, and we had nowhere to go. I promised your mom that I would take care of her (and you). I just didn’t have a clue where we would go.

Our second flight instructor, Alice, offered her home to us. “I live nearby, and my children are away at college, so I have plenty of room for you, ladies.”

We followed Alice to her house. Alice’s husband, Joe, was already there (having escaped New York), and he gave us a firsthand account of what happened this morning since he worked on the 70th floor of one of the Towers.

After the first plane had hit, Joe went down to the street and refused to return to his office. Later on, he watched in horror as the second plane crashed into the other tower.

“There was crying, screaming, and praying from the people in the street as both buildings (symbols of New York City) burned.

“Suddenly,” he said, “the buildings began to descend. Like they were being sucked into the ground! The dust and debris chased everyone towards the Hudson River, where small boats were waiting to rescue us.”

He continued to tell us that on the Jersey side of the river, people in cars were ready with socks, towels, sneakers, and water for the survivors, who were coated with gray dust. These dazed individuals asked to borrow cell phones to call their loved ones and reassure them. The New Jersey folks told the throng that not only could they use the cell phones, but they would be taken to places of refuge for the night. On this somber day, everyone worked together, helped each other, and tried to cope.

At the end of this day, Sara, over 3,000 souls were lost; firefighters, police officers, plane passengers, and unsuspecting office workers. Two buildings were destroyed, and others were damaged beyond repair. Our innocence, trust, and security had been shredded. As sad as it was, Sara, there was good. Today, there were no racial differences, no biases, and no lines drawn.  Not only was everybody monochromatic by dust, but we were all one people, one city, one nation, Americans!

The next morning, when your mom and I finally got to return home, we crossed the bridge to Staten Island, not daring to look over at the New York skyline and the gap still billowing smoke.

The song, “Proud to be an American” was playing on the radio and, while stuck in traffic, that’s when reality hit. Finally, we sobbed in each other’s arms.

*********************

It is now 19 years later, and you are a beautiful young lady who keeps asking me why on every September 11, your mom and I call each other no matter where we are and cry.  We cry for the friends who left us that day. We cry for people who hate with no remorse. But we also cry for you, Sara, and your generation, which will never know the beauty of the Twin Towers and how they brought a nation to stand together on that fateful day.

Remember, there still is kindness in this world. Honorable people are willing to help others in spite of our “so-called” differences.

Sweet Sara, always be one of those people. With all my love today and always,

Your Aunt Genna

WELLINGTON NATIONAL GOLF CLUB: SOLITUDE BASKED IN SUNSHINE

WELLINGTON NATIONAL GOLF CLUB:  SOLITUDE BASKED IN SUNSHINE

Story by Mike May, Photos by Emily May

It’s a fabulous, fun, and first-class place to unwind, exercise, eat, and play golf.  That’s the best way to describe the Wellington National Golf Club (wellingtonnationalgolfclub.com) in Wellington, Florida.  There are many reasons why the Wellington National GC deserves to be referred to as a first-class venue for golf.  Beginning with the opening tee shot and ending with the last putt dropping on the 18th green, you’ll quickly see that the attention to detail by Wellington National GC superintendent Jeff Smolen and his crew is impressive and commendable.  While the tee boxes, fairways, rough, and surrounding wooded areas are maintained to the highest standards possible, the quality and consistency of the greens are even better.

Perched on 260 acres of pine tree-filled property, this golf course was designed by one of golf’s major champions:  1973 U.S. Open and 1976 British Open winner Johnny Miller.  The course opened for play in 1989 and was originally called the Binks Forest Golf Club.  It changed names in March 2016.  In addition to being a first-class place to play golf, the Wellington National GC is also a first-class place to swim, dine, and exercise.  And, the atmosphere is always welcoming and friendly.

Wellington National’s 6th fairway, looking back from the green

Whether it’s January or June, Wellington National is maintained to the highest and most meticulous standards possible.  At Wellington National, you can see that perfection is always the goal, yet excellence is always an acceptable outcome.

At Wellington National, you’ll see a tribute to Wellington’s strong and vibrant equestrian community.  To that end, the tee markers on each hole are actually small metallic heads of horses that reflect the presence of polo, dressage, and horse jumping in the village of Wellington.  And each tee box is well grassed and flat, just like all horses would prefer.  In fact, the club’s logo features that same horse-head silhouette.

On the course, the fairways are in great shape throughout the year, as if a PGA Tour event was scheduled to be played there the following week.

If you ever wanted to rename Wellington National, two acceptable monikers would be Solitude or Serenity.  Why?  Because it’s very peaceful and quiet on this golf course.  For the most part, on any given hole, the only tee box, fairway, or green that you will see is the one you are playing.  It’s worth noting that one of Wellington National’s clever creations is a rather large double green that services both the par-five 12th and the par-four 14th holes.

Since this golf club’s opening, Wellington National has blossomed into one of south Florida’s pre-eminent destinations for golf, especially in Palm Beach County which is filled with many private and public golf courses that includes the oldest 18-hole golf course in Florida – that being the Ocean Course at the Breakers in Palm Beach.

Wellington National’s 2nd fairway

The sternest test at Wellington National can be referred to as ‘The Formidable Foursome’ — the last two holes of the front nine and the first two holes of the back nine.  Of those four holes, the 8th is the third most difficult hole on the course and the 9th hole is the most difficult.  As for the par-four 10th hole, which is ranked 12th on the course’s handicap system, it’s one of the more testing medium-length par fours as the fairway narrows the closer that you get to the green.  And, the 11th is ranked second on the handicap rating.  There’s no shame in playing those four holes in level bogeys.

Wellington National’s 17th Fairway

In an effort to maintain this course’s natural beauty, golfers are allowed a free drop if their ball finishes in the mulched flower beds on the 18th hole.  Clearly, the superintendent doesn’t want you trying to save par from the petunias!

As a private club, the Wellington National Golf Club does offer membership opportunities at a variety of price points.

According to Wellington National Golf Club General Manager and Director of Golf Ted Strelec, there are a few options and price points to consider.  For instance, the top-tier membership is the Premier Golf Membership, which is ideal for an entire family.  For young families, where the parents are under the age of 40, there’s the Junior Executive Membership.  And, for people who enjoy limited access to the golf course, but want all the social benefits of the club — such as access to the outdoor pool, the gym, and the two restaurants: Wine Bar Restaurant and the Champions Bistro — there’s the Social Membership.

If you are interested in playing first-class golf at a first-class club, contact Kyle D’Andrea at 561-333-5731 ext. 110 or via email: [email protected].
