Wycliffe Stiffs’ Opening Day

A Message from the Wycliffe Stiffs (Stickball League)

Photos by Ira Abramson

Our 18th Opening Day was awesome, steeped in the tradition of broomsticks, spaldeens and memories of being a kid playing in the streets of the Bronx and Brooklyn, having fun. Our players range in age from 50 to 93, all members of the Wycliffe Country Club. Of course, Stickball wouldn’t be complete without delicious Egg Creams served with love by ex -Stiff, Norm Negrin. The Wycliffe General Manager Rob Martin and Wellington Mayor Anne Gerwig threw out the ceremonial first balls, continuing a long-standing Wycliffe tradition at Stickball Blvd. at   Wellington Village Park. The first game pitted the Long Island Whalers vs. the New York Egg Creams. Rookie Jeff Potok lead the Whalers to a 12 to 4 victory with a towering home run. The second game was also a blow out with the Brooklyn Bums trouncing the Syracuse Nationals, 13 to 4, with veteran Stan Ginsberg hitting, 3 doubles in as many at-bats and driving in 5 runs.

Florida Collectors Association Supports Junior Achievement of the Palm Beaches

and Treasure Coast

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL. – With monies raised through donated wine and bourbon from a bottle auction during its annual conference, the Florida Collectors Association (FCA) is supporting programs across South Florida that enhance financial literacy in children and teens.

The donation of $2,650 will benefit Junior Achievement of the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast (JA) and their programs which focus on preparing young people to succeed in a global economy through programs that center on work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy. JA programs build partnerships between the business and education communities to provide the curriculum and volunteers who serve as role models to students to help prepare them for their future.

“Our organization is one that believes strongly in supporting organizations who are teaching our next generation financial skills that set them up for success in the future,” shared Matt Kiefer, President of the Florida Collectors Association. “JA embodies what we believe in and is making successful students and businesspeople who lead us in the very near future.”

Melissa Nash, immediate past president of FCA has challenged its members and their almost 9000 employees statewide to volunteer 1,000 hours and created a “collector challenge” for most hours donated by region. Additional monies raised through this and other efforts will also support JA.

Book Signing Event and Launch with Denise Marsh

Denise Marsh is a “Cultural Corner” writer for AroundWellington.com. She is also an Elementary school teacher in Lake Worth, Florida.  But many people do not know that she is also a writer and a poet. Writing has always been a strong catharsis for her and holds great relevance in her life.

It was just 3 ½ years ago that Denise was diagnosed with Stage 3 Breast Cancer.  Although she “won” the battle, her life was altered forever. During her journey with cancer, she wrote over 35 poems highlighting this painful yet powerful journey.  Quiet is the Fire, Silent is the Flame: My so called “relationship” with cancer is the culmination of this journey.  Writing the book gave her the healing she needed both spiritually, cognitively, and physically.

Please come join her on November 14th at 6:30PM for a book launch and signing at her favorite venue, Village Music and Cafe in Wellington.  The book is only available on Amazon (and cannot be resold privately). Bring your copy for her to sign!  Stay afterwards, enjoy relaxing Jazz music, have a delicious dinner prepared by the famous Chef Chris Paul and celebrate with a drink. Hope to see you there!

3rd ANNUAL SCULPTURE IN MOTION STEERS INTO THE ANN NORTON SCULPTURE GARDENS WITH SPECIAL GUEST CLASSIC CAR STAR DONALD OSBORNE AS GRAND MARSHAL

More than a dozen classic pre- and post-war automobiles on display on Saturday November 16th

(West Palm Beach, Fla.) – The 3rd Annual Sculpture in Motion – The Art of Pre- and Post-War Automobiles will park itself at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens on Saturday, November 16. Presented by 2019-20 Special Events Partner of the Season Sentient Jet, the day-long event will be chaired by Frances and Jeffrey Fisher, Audrey and Martin Gruss, and Lisa and Sam Lehrman. Classic car star Donald Osborne of CNBC Primetime’s weekly show Jay Leno’s Garage will be the Grand Marshal and John Barnes, founder of Cavallino Magazine and The Cavallino Classic, will once again serve as the guest curator and Honorary Chair for the exhibit.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sculpture in Motion welcomes visitors of all ages to experience the history and design of more than a dozen one-of-a-kind, classic pre- and post-war automobiles. Guests will have the chance to cast their votes for ‘Most Artistic,’ ‘Most Elegant,’ ‘People’s Choice’ and ‘Young Connoisseur.’ In addition, guests can partake in special tours and presentations about the automobiles, hosted by experts. Children, accompanied by their parents, will have the opportunity to be engaged with STEAM activities in the Gardens’ Environmental Classroom from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Sculpture in Motion has quickly become one of the most well attended and beloved events of the season,” said Frances Fisher, Event Co-Chair and ANSG Board Chairman. “We are thrilled to be bringing this unique one-day exhibition back for a third time with even more rare and stunning automobiles for the public’s enjoyment.”

In addition to his television work, Grand Marshal Donald Osborne is an author, car historian, host, consultant and an Accredited Senior Appraiser (A.S.A.) member of the American Society of Appraisers. Osborne works for clients across the world on the acquisition, sale and valuation of classic vehicles and travels all over the world attending major events, rallies and auctions. He has served as judge or emcee at many leading automotive concours events. On Jay Leno’s Garage, Osborne co-hosts recurring segments ‘Assess & Caress with Donald Osborne’ and ‘Behind the Bowtie,’ sharing his knowledge on classic car values with Leno and the viewers.

Donald Osborne

Osborne will be signing and selling copies of his book Stile Transatlantico / Transatlantic Style- A Romance of Fins and Chrome, from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., and a portion of the proceeds will go to ANSG. Osborne’s book brings to light the depth and range of the creative exchange in automotive design between Italy and America in the decade following the end of World War II.

“Any true review of 20th century design and the effect of World War II on automotive design must include a close look at this dynamic and fascinating period of creative exchange between two automobile loving nations,” said Osborne. “Automobiles designed and built in the decade and a half spanning the end of World War II through 1960 represented much beyond mere function. They served as the tangible expressions of progress, personal freedom, style and prestige for both the manufacturer and the consumer who drove them. As Grand Marshal for Sculpture in Motion, I look forward to relaying this message to the visitors that attend.”

In addition to his book, Osborne will be posting live to social media from Sculpture in Motion and encourages all car-lovers to follow the event’s festivities by watching a preferred hashtag and on his Instagram at @osbornedonald and his Facebook at @automotivevaluationservices.

During the evening, Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens will be transformed into a unique outdoor showroom for a special VIP cocktail reception with more intimate viewing of the cars from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and awards will be presented to collectors at the reception that evening.

“Sculpture in Motion is an extraordinary showcase for both automobile collectors and visitors of all ages,” said Barnes. “I am proud to support an event with this caliber that passes on the value of history and artistic design of automobiles, while supporting a cultural gem in our community.”

In addition to Sentient Jet, sponsors to date include Gunster, Key Private Bank and Palm Beach Illustrated.

The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, Inc. is a non-profit foundation established in 1977 by resident sculptor Ann Weaver Norton (1905-1982). An urban sanctuary of almost two acres, the compound comprises Norton’s historic house with exhibition galleries, her studio, monumental sculptures and tropical gardens of rare palms and cycads.

Located at 253 Barcelona Road in the historic El Cid neighborhood of West Palm Beach, the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens will have special admission pricing for the entire day on Saturday, November 16, 2019. GreenMarket Kicks off 25th Season, WPB Celebrates 125th Anniversary

0

It’s “thyme” to celebrate! The City of West Palm Beach kicked off its 125th Anniversary during the recent opening of this season’s GreenMarket, celebrating its own 25 years! Chartered on November 5, 1894, the City has a full calendar of celebrations to culminate at the Fourth on Flagler 2020.

At the recent GreenMarket celebration, Mayor Keith James spoke as local dignitaries put sentimental items and artifacts into a “thyme” capsule. Items included current zoning maps of the city, T-shirts, newspaper articles and postcards. Former mayors including Rep. Lois Frankel, Mayor Nancy Graham and Mayor Jeri Muoio were on hand to celebrate, as well as city commissioners and former city commissioners.

“This is an exciting time for the City as we celebrate the legacy of 125 years of West Palm Beach and 25 years of the GreenMarket,” said Mayor James. “Our city has come a long way since 1894, and there is so much for all of us to celebrate. I invite the public to come out and participate the many free and fun anniversary events scheduled for this next year.”

One of the largest markets in the region, the GreenMarket features 90 vendors offering a variety of products, including fresh produce, exotic plants and flowers, herbs and spices, baked goods, gourmet and specialty foods, coffee and teas, and much more. In addition to the local vendors, the GreenMarket also features live music, unlimited mimosas for $10, and plentiful green space and seating, which creates a morning full of fun and relaxation.

Due to Phase II of the Clematis Streetscape project to widen sidewalks and add shade trees, GreenMarket vendors will be temporarily located along Flagler Drive for part of the season. It is expected that the GreenMarket will return to its popular regular location in December, once road work is finished.

Events and activities of the 125th Anniversary include a comprehensive exhibit at the Historical Society of Palm Beach County, lectures at the Mandel Public Library, special boardwalk tours at Grassy Waters Preserve, neighborhood bike tours, an anniversary-themed light show shining on the Banyan/Quadrille parking garage and much more! Some of the celebrations will be a part of the City’s heritage events, such as Clematis by Night, and community leaders have rallied their support as well.
