Loggerhead Marinelife Center breaks all-time sea turtle nest count record

Juno Beach, Florida: As of Tuesday, August 6th 2019, Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s (LMC) research biologists recorded an all-time record breaking sea turtle nest count of 19,580 nests (and counting). The Center’s last record breaking nesting season was recorded in 2017 with a total of 19,085 nests. Sea turtle nesting season in Palm Beach County runs from March 1 to October 31 annually. Although the Center has experienced record breaking nesting numbers in previous years, other years have shown a lower yield. For comparison, the 2018 nesting season resulted in a total of just over 11,900 sea turtles nests. With three months left of nesting season, our researchers expect the nesting numbers to continue to increase by a few more thousand nests. LMC’s research biologists will continue to mark and monitor sea turtle nests until the end of nesting season, which ends on October 31st.

LMC biologists estimate that over 1,367,489 sea turtle hatchlings have been produced from nests laid thus far on our beaches. With four full-time members of the research staff, seven seasonal morning technicians, two night technicians, five morning interns and one night intern, LMC’s research staff members are able to monitor a 9.5-mile stretch of beach in Palm Beach County, Florida. This specific stretch of beach is one of the most densely nested sea turtle nesting beaches in the world. LMC, a nonprofit sea turtle hospital, research, education and ocean conservation institution is located in Juno Beach, FL.

Director of Research, Dr. Justin Perrault commented on the success of LMC’s research efforts and the record breaking nest count, “This news is quite exciting, especially since season is nowhere near over, and we are still expecting a few thousand more nests this season. The recent rise in sea turtle nest counts are worth celebrating and are likely due to protection measures, enacted several decades ago. We have to remind ourselves that there is still much work to be done to combat existing threats to sea turtles, including reducing plastic pollution, assessing habitat loss, and improving water quality.”

While nesting numbers are at an all-time high this year, it’s vital to remember that sea turtles continue to face threats, namely plastic pollution. Currently, one hundred percent of post-hatchlings who are admitted to The Sea Turtle Hospital at LMC have ingested plastic. In addition to plastic pollution, sea turtles are faced with threats of record heat temperatures. The record heat may skew sea turtle hatchlings’ gender to female, thus reducing the number of males.

How to Help:

To help LMC celebrate the record breaking sea turtle nesting season:

  • Blue Friends Society Beach Cleanup: Join LMC staff and volunteers on August 17th at 8:30 a.m. on the Center’s back deck for our monthly Blue Friends Society Beach Cleanup where you can help reduce debris on one of the world’s most important sea turtle nesting beaches
  • Adopt-a-nest: To celebrate this year’s record nesting season people are encouraged to adopt-a-sea-turtle-nest, for more information on this program please visit: https://marinelife.org/help/adopt/

Additionally, please remember to practice sea-turtle-safe protocol when visiting our local Florida beaches during nesting and hatching season:

Do:

  • Throw away debris left behind on the beach.
  • Fill in holes in the sand, knock down sand castles and remove foreign objects that may obstruct a sea turtle’s path to and from the ocean.
  • If you come across a nesting sea turtle, observe at a distance from behind.
  • Look out for disoriented hatchlings on trails and roads near the beach.
  • Keep your lights out near the beach and install sea turtle-friendly lighting where needed.
  • Bring weak or disoriented hatchlings to Loggerhead Marinelife Center. Hatchlings can be placed in a bucket with damp sand, no water, for transport.  They can be placed in the 24-hour drop-off cooler located outside the Center’s entrance (14200 US Highway One, Juno Beach, FL 33408).

Don’t:

  • Interact with or disrupt a nesting sea turtle.
  • Release balloons (deflated ones resemble jellyfish, a common prey item for sea turtles).
  • Use lighting on the beach at night including flashlights, lanterns, flash photography and cell phones.
  • Touch hatchlings on their way to the ocean.
  • Take or touch empty egg shells, or exposed, un-hatched eggs.
  • Harm or harass sea turtles, their nests or hatchlings.
  • Use shovels to dig on the beach during nesting season.

It is illegal to harm or harass sea turtles, their nests or hatchlings, which are protected by the U.S. Endangered Species Act of 1973 and Florida Statute Chapter 370. For more information about sea turtle nesting, visit marinelife.org/nesting or marinelife.org/research.

Disney Musicals in Schools

THE RAYMOND F. KRAVIS CENTER

FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS ANNOUNCES

FOUR NEW SCHOOLS SELECTED FOR 2019-20

DISNEY MUSICALS IN SCHOOLS PROGRAM

Palm Beach County Public Elementary Schools

To Produce a Disney Musical at No Cost

For Release (August 7, 2019): The Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts is pleased to announce the four Palm Beach County public elementary schools that have been selected to participate in its 2019-2020 Disney Musicals in Schools program. The program is an outreach initiative developed by Disney Theatrical Group to create sustainable theater programs in under-resourced elementary schools. The four schools selected are Galaxy E3 Elementary in Boynton Beach, Jupiter Elementary, South Grade Elementary in Lake Worth and Westward Elementary in West Palm Beach.

The selected schools will participate in a 17-week musical theater residency, led by a team of teaching artists trained by the Kravis Center and Disney Theatrical Group, at no cost to them. Each school will receive performance rights, education support materials and guidance from the teaching artists. The program features a professional development focus, through which participating school teachers partner with Kravis Center teaching artists to learn how to produce, direct, choreograph, and music direct, culminating in their first 30-minute Disney KIDS musical at their school. As a capstone to the experience, the Kravis Center will host a Student Share Celebration on April 9, 2020, in which each school performs one number from its show on the Marden Stage in Dreyfoos Hall for an audience of students, teachers, family, and community members.

“We are so excited to see this program’s growth as it enters its third year, creating sustainable theater programs in more of our local under-resourced elementary schools,” said Tracy C. Butler, director of education for the Kravis Center. “Using the unique world of musical theater, Disney Musicals in Schools helps to foster positive relationships between students, faculty, staff, parents, and the community.  Students and teachers work in teams, developing the wide spectrum of skills needed when producing a piece of musical theater, including: critical thinking, problem solving, ensemble building, communication, self-confidence, and interpersonal skills.”

Seven other Palm Beach County schools are currently enrolled in the program and will continue producing Disney musicals at their schools this academic year: Academy for Positive Learning in Lake Worth, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary in Riviera Beach, Egret Lake Elementary in West Palm Beach, Forest Park Elementary in Boynton Beach, Glade View Elementary in Belle Glade, Lincoln Elementary in Riviera Beach, and Meadow Park Elementary in West Palm Beach.

Disney Musicals in Schools was launched in 2010 in response to Disney Theatrical Group’s concern that under-resourced public elementary schools were not afforded equitable access to the arts. After successfully offering the program in New York City schools, Disney Theatrical Group began partnering with organizations in other communities across the United States.

Disney KIDS musicals, created in partnership with Music Theater International (MTI), are 30-minute musicals designed for elementary school performers and have been adapted from the classic Disney films 101 Dalmatians, Aladdin, The Aristocats, The Jungle Book, The Lion King, and Winnie the Pooh.

ABOUT “MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000”

For more than 30 years, the award-winning comedy television series “Mystery Science Theater 3000” (MST3K) has been known as one of the top cult TV shows of all time. The story of a human host and his robot sidekicks trapped aboard a satellite and forced to watch cheesy movies by their captors, MST3K has maintained its reputation thanks to its fervently devoted fan base, known as “MSTies.”

Created by Joel Hodgson, the first season of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” aired in 1988 on KTMA-TV in Minneapolis. Set on the Satellite of Love, the series follows a hapless host trapped by mad scientists on a satellite in space who is forced to watch some of the most outrageously unfortunate B-movies ever created. To keep sane, he’s built two robot sidekicks and together they do a running commentary on the films, affectionately mocking their flaws with inspired wisecracks and acting as a lively movie theater peanut gallery.

MST3K’s national broadcast life began in 1989 on the Comedy Channel (later to become Comedy Central), where it ran for seven seasons. The show’s final three seasons aired on the Sci-Fi Channel. Series creator Hodgson originally played the stranded man, Joel Robinson. When he left in 1993, series head writer Mike Nelson replaced him as the new B-movie victim and continued in the role for the rest of the show’s run. The format proved to be popular, and during its ten seasons and 197 episodes on Comedy Central and the Sci-Fi Channel, it attained a loyal fan base and critical acclaim, including a Peabody Award and two Primetime Emmy® nominations.

In late 2015, Shout! Factory and creator Joel Hodgson formed a new partnership, known as Satellite of Love LLC, to acquire the global IP rights to MST3K with the aim of producing new episodes and managing and developing the IP in other areas. The highly successful MST3K Kickstarter campaign to #BringBackMST3K, spearheaded by Shout! Factory and Hodgson, surpassed its goal by funding the production of 14 new episodes and set the world record as the highest-funded film and video crowdfunding campaign in history. The new episodes of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” debuted as a Netflix original series on April 14, 2017. Later in 2017, Netflix renewed the series for another season.

ABOUT JOEL HODGSON

Joel Hodgson started in show business as a stand-up comedian during college, headlining in comedy clubs in Minneapolis. After graduation in 1982, Joel moved to LA and became a regular at The Comedy Store on the Sunset Strip.

In 1983, Joel was booked for his first network television appearance on “Late Night with David Letterman,” and HBO’s “Young Comedians Special with John Candy.” The following year, Joel became a series regular on both “Letterman” and NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” with four appearances on each. When he wasn’t on television, Joel was performing his act in comedy clubs and theaters across the country.

In 1987, Joel was invited by Jerry Seinfeld to co-write Seinfeld’s first HBO special, “Stand-Up Confidential,” where Joel began to take an interest in other aspects of production. In the period after this, Joel began doing ensemble work in the Minneapolis area producing two stage productions, Heavy Levity and Spookfest 87, while continuing to invent and design props, toys, and robots.

It was in 1988 that Joel created “Mystery Science Theater 3000,” the ground-breaking movie riffing series, which premiered on St. Paul’s local UHF station, KTMA, in Minnesota. The show migrated to cable on the Comedy Channel, then to Comedy Central, then Sci-Fi and ran for a total of eleven years, producing nearly 200 episodes and a feature film. It also collected several Emmy® nominations and a Peabody Award along the way.

In 1995, Joel explored more work in Hollywood, including creative development for The Jim Henson Company and Walt Disney Television. As a writer, Joel co-wrote the Disney feature “Honey We Shrunk Ourselves” with Nell Scovell, as well as Cartoon Network’s “Space Ghost Coast to Coast.” Joel also was a magic consultant for the series “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” and for Penn and Teller’s Sin City Spectacular. HBO also commissioned Hodgson’s experimental comedy special “The TV Wheel,” which premiered on Comedy Central.

With the background and experience Joel’s career had provided, he developed and began performing his one man show Riffing Myself at theaters and comi-cons. He also started performing again with the original cast of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” in a show called “Cinematic Titanic,” which Joel refers to as a “readers’ theater” version of MST3K. The group’s run spanned nearly seven years with over 100 live performances.

In November of 2015, Joel created the #BringBackMST3K Kickstarter campaign, and along with the show’s “backers,” raised over six million dollars to fund new episodes of MST3K while setting a world record for the most successful crowdfunding campaign for a film and video project ever.

The first new season after the Kickstarter was titled “MST3K: The Return” and featured an all-new cast as well as cameos by the original MST3K cast and writers. It launched on Netflix in April 2016 and received critical acclaim, including “100% Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes.

Netflix commissioned a second order for the series, which was called “MST3K: The Gauntlet,” and it also met with critical praise, including another coveted Rotten Tomatoes “100% Fresh” review.

Joel is currently the Chief Creative Officer of his company, Alternaversal, which is the company responsible for the creating the new IP for MST3K. This includes the #BringBackMST3K Kickstarter campaign, 20 feature-length episodes for Netflix, two national tours of Mystery Science Theater 3000 Live, and a six-comic mini-series on Dark Horse Comics.
