West Palm Beach, FL – Florida Senators Gayle Harrell, District 25, and Darryl Rouson, District 19, recently visited with Palm Beach County community leaders who are at the forefront of launching Open Table, a national model that brings together faith organizations, government, business, healthcare, non-profit and other sectors to help individuals and families experiencing poverty.  Mayors of Belle Glade, South Bay, Pahokee and Jon Katov, CEO and founder of Open Table, joined with other leaders to share with the senators how the model brings together a “table” of approximately ten individuals to invest their time, personal connections, and skills in the life of an individual or family on a weekly basis over the long term, becoming a team of advocates to move them out of poverty, permanently.  It is the first time the Open Table model has been launched in a rural, low income Florida community.

The idea to bring Open Table to Palm Beach County emanated from the Southeast Florida Behavioral Health Network as a promising practice.  It was first embraced in the Glades by Veree Jenkins, CEO and founder of the Federation of Families and Reverend Willie Lawrence, Pastor of St. Matthews Missionary Baptist Church in Belle Glade who also co-chairs Palm Health Foundation’s Healthier Glades initiative. The two brought the concept to community leaders throughout the Glades, including Mayor Joe Kyles, City of South Bay, who became the first mayor in the U.S. to sponsor an Open Table in his community.  Mayor Wilson, City of Belle Glade and Mayor Babbs, City of Pahokee quickly joined as well.

Also key to the initiative’s success has been the involvement of the faith community, with pastors of ten African American churches unifying in the Glades and signing on to commit their support.  Funders include Children’s Services Council of Palm Beach County, Quantum Foundation and Palm Health Foundation.  Palm Health Foundation serves as the “backbone” organization for Open Table, providing managerial and administrative oversight, and is the first foundation in the U.S. to take on a funder and leadership role as an active partner with senior staff members serving on Tables in the Glades. The foundation itself is launching a Table.

Community leaders at the meeting with Senators Harrell and Rouson shared their early experiences about their own training for becoming a “table member,” one of approximately ten people who will come together weekly to form a table with an individual or family who needs personal guidance and support to help them develop connections and tools to succeed.  Guidance is provided for education, employment, behavioral health or other areas of need where the table members have expertise to provide a comprehensive, integrated system of support.

Andy McAusland, director of grants and evaluation for Palm Health Foundation, became one of the first members of a table and shared his thoughts with Senators Harrell and Rouson at the meeting.  “Open Table gives us a proven model for creating a network of support and pathways out of poverty,” said McAusland.  “All members of a table come with the sincere desire to give of themselves and help that one person or family develop a life plan for their vision of a successful life.  We help them get there.  It’s love thy neighbor—it’s no more complicated than that.”

The first Open Table in the Glades launched June 2019.  Individuals or families for Open Table are selected by members of the Glades STAR, the children’s mental health partnership group.  Table members come largely from the Glades community and have been trained to serve.  Forty people have been trained to become table members and have started tables.

Senators Harrell and Rouson heard of the great promise of Open Table and wanted to know more for their own communities.  Their interest and that of the Glades is how the Open Table model can provide wraparound supports—from mental health to employment—to develop their own strengths and transform their lives from poverty to self-sufficiency and stabilization.

“The Glades is a demonstration of how our country can reclaim the human potential of all people, said Jon Katov, founder and CEO of Open Table. “A nation where human potential is divided – one part powered through economic mobility and the other using its energy to battle poverty – will never end poverty. But the fruit of the combined human potential of all of us will.”

Top 5 Superfoods You Should Eat Everyday

Top 5 Superfoods You Should Eat Everyday

By Erika Long

In the ongoing pursuit for a healthier body and mind, superfoods are growing increasingly more popular. This category of nutrition consists of mostly plant-based foods, although there are some fish and dairy, that are thought to be nutrient rich and great for our health. The health benefits of superfoods range from being a deterrent of cancer and heart disease to improving digestion and reducing the risk of diabetes. They also hold anti-aging properties that help protect our minds from memory loss and cognition problems. Given that superfoods are packed full of what our bodies need to perform optimally, it’s smart to consume at least one of these top 5 superfoods daily.

Top 5 Superfoods You Should Eat Everyday:

  1. Turmeric: Turmeric is made from the ground roots of a tall plant that grows in Asia and Central America. The active ingredient, curcumin, is widely used to reduce inflammation and chronic pain. Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties can help with arthritis and other causes of joint pain while the antioxidants it contains can improve liver function and aid in healthy digestion.

  1. Leafy Greens: Leafy greens such as kale, spinach, collards, and Swiss chards, arugula, are both low in calories and carbs while having amazingly high amounts of fiber. They contain a variety of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and are a great way to get a feeling of fullness that is helpful when attempting to lose weight. Besides the health benefits for your body, they are also known to promote mental alertness and reduce the onset of cognitive decline.

  1. Hemp Hearts: Also known as hemp seeds, hemp hearts are the nutrient dense seeds of the hemp plant. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids, hemp hearts can promote hormone regulation, bone health, and the maintenance of our metabolism and reproductive system. Besides fatty acids, they are a complete protein, which make them a perfect protein source for vegans. Plus, their mild nutty flavor is delicious.

  1. Matcha: Matcha means “powered tea”. The unique process of making matcha brings with it unique health benefits. When consuming matcha green tea, we are ingesting the actual tea leaves and thus, the abundance of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that come with it. Its health benefits include the risk reduction of heart disease and cancer, blood sugar regulation, blood pressure reduction, anti-aging benefits, and more. Matcha has caffeine but also L-theanine so it gives energy but not the jitters that can come with coffee. Regardless, it’s best to consume matcha at least six hours before you plan to go to sleep.

  1. Blueberries: Besides being delicious, blueberries are packed full of vitamins and nutrients. It is thought that blueberries have one of the highest levels of antioxidants of all fruits and vegetables, making it the ultimate superfood. Protecting us from DNA damage, cancer, and the aging process, the health benefits of blueberries stretch far and wide. They have been linked to causing a reduction in the effects of diabetes, the maintenance of brain function and memory, and the ability to help muscles recoup after exercise.

When eaten daily, these top 5 superfoods can have amazing effects on our health. They assist in the everyday prevention against inflammation and digestive problems, as well as acting as protecting against serious health issues like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Superfoods can be a delicious way to help the mind and body perform at its peak potential.

For My New Class

A poem for my new class

This is a new year for you.
This is your time to be true.
It is a fresh new start
so give it all your heart.

I am so proud of you already.
I know that you will hold steady.
But should you forget and feel blue,
know that I am here to cheer for you.

As you read these words of care,
remember that I will always be there.
Reach for the sky
and you will learn to fly.

Mama Lucy’s All-Pro Ribs

MAMA LUCY’S ALL-PRO RIBS:  A SUNSHINE STATE STANDOUT

By Mike May

There’s a BBQ restaurant in Miami, Florida that is taking ‘finger lickin good’ to a new level.  And, it’s not the latest KFC franchise to open in Miami-Dade County.  It’s Mama Lucy’s All-Pro Ribs.  Located at 2201 NW 119th Street in Miami, Mama Lucy’s is owned and operated by Jack and Sheila Holmes.  Their restaurant has been serving food to hungry customers since 2000.

At Mama Lucy’s All-Pro Ribs (305-687-8782), you should read the sign on the front door that says Where The “Soss” Is The “Boss.”  You would expect nothing less from a BBQ joint!  The quality of the food at Mama Lucy’s All-Pro Ribs is so good that you are wasting your time if you don’t show up with a big appetite.  Open every week from Wednesday through Sunday, the portions are generous and are guaranteed to end any and all hunger pains.  While Mama Lucy’s is a restaurant, all of the food is served ‘to go.’

While Mama Lucy’s is known for its barbecued ribs, the quality and diversity of the other items on its menu, especially the side dishes and desserts, are second-to-none.

“People love our food, especially our ribs,” said Jack Holmes.  “You should have seen the number of people lined up for our food on the 4th of July.”

If you don’t eat meat, you will still enjoy what Mama Lucy’s has to offer.  The list of side dishes is huge and includes baked beans, candied yams, collard greens, macaroni & cheese, pigeon peas & rice, yellow rice, potato salad, black eyed peas, lima beans, okra & tomato, corn, string beans, French fries, and souse.  Yes, if you are a vegetarian, you can order a vegetable plate.  But, it’s important to note that the vegetable side dishes really deserve a better moniker:  Soul Food, Southern Comfort Food, or Super Duper Fixins’ might be a better way to describe those side dishes, which taste just like Mama Lucy used to prepare, according to Jack Holmes.

But, who is Mama Lucy?  Jack revealed that she was his late grandmother, who lived long enough to see her name attached to the name of the restaurant.

“She was a great cook,” remembered Jack.  “And, the barbecue sauce that we use is her recipe.  That’s why the “Soss” Is the “Boss,” always has been and always will be.”

Owner Jack Holmes and writer Mike May

The deep fried seafood — conch, shrimp, catfish, grouper, tilapia, and red snapper — at Mama Lucy’s is also highly acclaimed.

The quality of the desserts and their portion size will dictate that you will have to return in order to sample every dessert, which includes sweet potato pie, peach cobbler, red velvet cake, bread pudding, banana pudding, and sweet potato pound cake.

While Mama Lucy’s is known for its ribs, its other main courses have earned my ‘blue-ribbon seal of approval.’  They include delicious pork chops, mouthwatering chicken wings, homemade meatloaf, terrific turkey wings, and out-of-this-world barbecue chicken.  As for the ribs, they are cooked outside in one of three large covered barbecue pits which are used to barbecue the ribs and chicken.  Each morning around 10:30, Jack Holmes fires up the grills with wood and charcoal.  Ribs are ready to eat by lunchtime.  And the grills keep cooking meat until well after dark, sometimes as late as 1:30 in the morning on a Friday night.

It’s fair to say the locals in Miami must feel that it’s always great to eat late, especially on the weekends at Mama Lucy’s.

“Every item on the menu is so good that you don’t know where to start,” said Joel Dunn of nearby Hollywood, Florida.  “Starting with dessert and finishing up with the ribs is a novel idea.  The ribs are delicious.  They are better than advertised.”

Some of the more well-known clientele at Mama Lucy’s have been so well treated and fed that they have left their shirt behind as a thank you.  Those shirts are actual jerseys worn by many pro athletes who have been customers at Mama Lucy’s and whose autographed jerseys are hanging on the wall in a frame.  That list includes former Miami Heat superstar Lebron James and a number of former University of Miami Hurricanes football players who also found a home playing in the National Football League such as former New England Patriots All-Pro nose tackle Vince Wolfolk, former Buffalo Bills running back Willis McGahee, former Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson, and former Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Vernon Carey.

The number of star athletes who have sampled and enjoyed the cuisine at Mama Lucy’s All-Pro Ribs is not limited to those athletes whose jerseys are currently hanging on the wall.

“I have another 30 jerseys which still need to be put in frames,” added Jack Holmes.

So, if you want a true ‘finger lickin good’ dining experience, go see Jack and Sheila at Mama Lucy’s All-Pro Ribs.  And, if you want to leave one of your autographed jerseys behind as a thank you, that’s OK, too.

How do you Prevent Injuries?

How Do You Prevent Injuries?

It is well documented that exercising and playing sports regularly has countless health benefits but unfortunately as with most things in life there are always risks involved and in this case it is the risk of injuries. Speak to any athlete and they will be able to reel off at least one injury or another ranging from minor sprains to more serious tears or even broken bones.

Fortunately for many of us minor sports injuries can be taken care of at home and do not require professional attention.  The actual length of time before you are able to return to normal activity after such an injury is dependent on the injury itself and the person’s medical history.  For example, a recurring injury may take longer to heal than a new type of injury and could be the difference between a few days recuperation as opposed to a week or so. Obviously if pain persists or increases over time or extreme swelling is present it is time to seek professional medical advice.

So What Is the Best Method for Avoiding Injuries?

Prevention. Sounds a little too obvious doesn’t it? But prevention as with most medical issues is ultimately better than cure. So how do you go about preventing an injury? Because let’s face it, it’s not as if you are ‘trying’ to injure yourself is it?

Overuse is a huge factor.  Repeating the same type of movement over and over again, day in, day out, month in month out will ultimately lead to injury. For instance a study from the Radiological Society of North America found that young baseball pitchers had a higher risk of an overuse injury which increased the likelihood of further problems such as torn rotator cuffs.

Researchers studied 2,372 pitchers who ranged in ages from 15 to 25 years of age. Those most at risk for shoulder injuries were those who threw more than 100 pitches per week. Study author Johannes Roedl reports “More and more kids are entering sports earlier in life and are overtraining.  It is important to limit stress to the growing bones to allow them to develop normally.”

Warming up is essential before you undertake any form of activity, so many people miss this vital step to preparing their body for the activity they are about to perform.  We are often too impatient and want to get on with the ‘main’ activity or sport not realizing that the warm up will assist, not only, with performance levels and ultimately end results, but also help prevent injury. A focused cool down is just as important.

Increasing intensity gradually is also an important step, not going full out at the start and abstaining from excess is another major step in the prevention of injuries.

Overtaxing your body day in day out is a body begging for an injury. Alternating your more rigorous workouts with more leisurely ones avoids overtaxing the body.

Correct technique is not only vital to results but essential for prevention as well as using safe and good equipment and fitting yourself out with correct shoes and attire to match the activity.

MIND/BODY! We hear this term continually these days, but it is probably your biggest compass to the prevention of injury. Listen to your body, understand what feels normal and what doesn’t. You are the only one who can ultimately make a decision for yourself.  By all means listen to your coach or trainer for advice, knowledge, motivation and correct technique but NEVER let them make a decision for you.

I am sure we have all heard the phrase “No Pain, No Gain.”  So my personal thoughts on that saying? I am not sure I can print it!!!! But needless to say I do not agree. Yes you must push to overload to gain improvement, so definitely expect to feel discomfort but never pain. Pain is your body telling you something is not right it is a warning and you should take notice.

As I said, prevention is always better than cure!

The Lost Diary of Elizabeth Cady Stanton

A PAGE FROM THE LOST DIARY

 OF ELIZABETH CADY STANTON

From Wikipedia:

Elizabeth Cady Stanton (November 12, 1815 –  October 26, 1902) was an American suffragist, social activist, abolitionist, and leading figure of the early women’s rights movement. Her Declaration of Sentiments, presented at the Seneca Falls Convention held in 1848 in Seneca Falls, New York, is often credited with initiating the first organized women’s rights and women’s suffrage movements in the United States. Stanton was president of the National Woman Suffrage Association from 1892 until 1900.

Susan B. Anthony is often credited with founding the woman’s rights movement in the United States. However she and Elizabeth Stanton were lifelong friends and co-workers in both the slavery abolitionist movement and woman’s rights movements. Following the end of the Civil war in 1865, they focused their attentions on woman’s rights. It may be said that Elizabeth Stanton provided the philosophical and legal direction to the movement while Susan Anthony was its visible face.  Susan Anthony was often quoted as saying, “Elizabeth developed the thunderbolts which I fired.”

Elizabeth Stanton was married and had a husband and several children to look after. Susan was unmarried and free to travel and represent the cause at meetings around the country, before the U.S. Congress and, when necessary, going to jail for her activities.. This difference in their circumstances probably accounts for the public’s perception of Anthony as the principal representative of the Suffragette movement.

Stanton’s father was a lawyer and Justice of the New York Supreme Court. It has been said that he sometimes wished he had had a son. Perhaps it was this wish that caused him to coach young Elizabeth in the rudiments of the law and allowed her to mingle with the other lawyers and law clerks in his office.

By the age of thirty-three, in 1848, she was a seasoned advocate for both the abolition of slavery and the nascent woman’s rights movement. In that year she joined a group of Quaker women in Seneca Falls, New York in organizing “a convention to discuss the social, civil, and religious condition and rights of woman.” It was held in Seneca Falls on July 19 and 20, 1848, two years before Elizabeth met Susan B. Anthony.

The Seneca Falls Convention is generally identified as the start of the woman’s rights movement in the United States.

As a principle speaker, Elizabeth Stanton delivered a, now famous speech, and a document, entitled A Declaration of Rights and Sentiments   which was modeled after the U.S. Declaration of Independence. The convention adopted her Declaration and one hundred participants signed it. Following the convention, Fredrick Douglas promoted the Declaration as a, “grand movement for attaining the civil, social, political, and religious rights of women.”

Perhaps because of her awareness of the inflammatory nature of the Declaration Stanton kept a secret diary in which she contemplated the importance of the document, its possible social consequences and the potential effect it might have on her life and family situation. The diary was lost and not seen again until after her death in 1902. The entry presented here is dated July 16, 1848, three days before her presentation at the Seneca Falls Convention.

***

Sunday

July 16, 1848

Most of the preparations for the convention are completed. Only the construction of the speakers platform and its patriotic bunting remain to be finished. The Quaker-ladies are even now preparing the refreshments we will serve following the speeches.

For the tenth time I have reread my own presentation. I am satisfied that I have copied the structure of the Declaration of Independence. I believe that by doing so I have added strength and justification to the grievances I am claiming and the resolutions that I will be proposing. But I keep wondering if it is too aggressive? Have I unjustly criticized all men? Certainly, I know there are good men in this world. And yet, even the best of men, or should I say the most of men, have fallen into the mind-set of oppressing women. I blame the social pressure of our times as much as any overtly malicious interest in doing harm to women…still,  they continue to see us as less than full citizens…almost as slaves. This cannot continue!

My sincerest hope is that my Declaration of Rights and Sentiments will be taken seriously and given full consideration. If we can persuade the New York state legislature to accept and act upon some of the resolutions I am presenting, which should result in changes in the voting, divorce and property rights of women in this state, then perhaps it will serve as a model and legal precedent for other states to follow. This will be a long and arduous fight. It is not likely that I will live to see the miracle of universal suffrage for women in the United States.

More immediately, I am concerned for the consequences that releasing the Declaration may hold for my family and me.  Will local women, even some of our friends and family, consider my husband, my children and me as outcast of society? Are there some hidden financial punishments that local banks and businesses can inflict upon us?

Yes, I worry about these things…but the cause of woman’s rights is too great…I must go on.
