FITNESS TIPS FOR EVERYBODY:  TRY ‘DESKERCIZES’

By Mike May

The ‘Inactivity Pandemic is now impacting more than 80 million Americans, especially those people who happen sit behind a desk all day.  But working at a desk doesn’t mean your time at the office has to be a sedentary experience.  Believe it or not, but you can incorporate exercise and fitness – called ‘deskercizes’ — into your office experience without venturing too far from your desk, which is great news if you are looking to remain fit and supple.

There are ten ‘deskercises’ which can transform the white-collar desk job into a fun, rewarding, manageable fitness frenzy.  One of the underlying messages is that Americans must incorporate physical activity into their lives because sitting is now sabotaging their health.  These ten office fitness tips — compiled by Cedric X. Bryant, chief science officer at the American Council on Exercise, and John Porcari, executive director of La Crosse Exercise and Health Program at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse – are great fitness tips for people who are looking to remain fit and flexible throughout the year, especially during the cold winter months.

  1. Paper Pushups – With your arms outstretched while grabbing the edge of your desk, lean at 45 degrees, and starting doing pushups.  Consider 20 every hour on the hour.
  2. Book Press – Pick up the heaviest book that you can hold with both hands.  Then, extend the book above your head and then lower it down behind your neck.  Repeat the process.  It will help your triceps.
  3. Shoulder Blade Squeezes – To improve your hunched posture, stand up and squeeze your shoulder blades back and forth.  Try holding the squeeze on your shoulder blades for 10 seconds.
  4. Office Yoga – Keep a yoga matt at the office and lay it out on the floor for some impromptu stretching.  Consider getting in the Zen position for a few moments.
  5. Chair Squats – Stand a few inches from the edge of your chair, lower yourself until you are seated in your chair, stretch out your arms parallel to the ground, and keep your back straight.
  6. Tricep Desk Dips – With your back to a desk, reach back and grab the edge of the desk.  Then, bend your arms and lower the body while putting tension on your triceps.
  7. Wall Sits – Stand next to a wall and lower your back along the wall until your legs are parallel to the floor.  Hold that position, then have your back move up the wall to the original position.
  8. Standing Calf Raises – While grabbing the back of your chair, put your feet together, and get up on your tippy toes.  Hold for 10 seconds.  Repeat this process to strengthen your calf muscles.
  9. Leg Raises – While sitting in a chair with your back straight, extend each leg – one at a time – and hold it – parallel to the floor – for 10 seconds.  Repeat 10 times.  This builds your abs.
  10. Phone Pacing – While on the telephone, use a headset and walk around your office while on the phone rather than just sitting at your desk.

And, some people are taking office exercise a step further by removing the chair altogether.

“Having a stand up desk is helpful in maintaining an active lifestyle,” says VJ Mayor, senior director of communications, National Confectioners Association (Washington, DC).  “You don’t realize how much your posture is affected by sitting so much. I find myself doing many of the exercises listed as I feel it helps stimulate my brain and be more productive in the workplace.”

According to PHIT America, the non-profit cause focused on reversing the ‘Inactivity Pandemic,’ more than 10 independent studies confirm exercise energies the brain and is more receptive to learning.

The ‘treadmill desk’ is also gaining in popularity.  It allows the user to walk on a treadmill, at a low level speed, while speaking on the telephone, working on their computer, or discussing business opportunities with colleagues.  And, that’s what a number of golfers do while on the golf course – they walk and talk.

People who exercise in the workplace agree that they are more creative and productive because that moderate level of physical activity generates the release of endorphins that triggers the positive energy.

“The issue of fitness in the workplace is important because physical inactivity in the U.S. is negatively affecting rising health care costs, national productivity, absenteeism in the workplace, scholastic achievement in our schools, and the ability of the U.S. military to attract fit troops,” says Jim Baugh, Founder, PHIT America.

This concept of more movement in the workplace has triggered support from the medical community.

“I think the concept of trying to build activity throughout your day is so important. And it makes you healthier,” says Dr. Jordan Metzl, New York’s (NY) Hospital for Special Surgery.

“As a family physician, I have seen first-hand that exercise is a powerful medication,” says Dr. Robert Sallis, medical doctor/co-director, Kaiser Permanente Medical Center (Fontana, CA).  “My patients who exercise are consistently healthier and live longer and years of research back up this observation.”

1 rep max squat: a future biomarker for brain health?

0

When people think about growing new brain cells and optimizing brain health, they think about playing games like Sudoku or Luminosity. The idea being that we need mental games to flex our mental muscle.

The problem is that mental games like Sudoku and Luminosity have failed to demonstrate any meaningful evidence that it alters brain or cogntive function. They can make you good at Sudoku-related tasks or LUminosity-related games, but that’s about it.

There is one thing that has consistently shown improvements in cognitive, cellular, and neurological measures of brain function:

Exercise

2018 study showed that the dis-use of leg muscles was associated with decreased production of neural stem cells and decreased maturation of the supporting cells in the brain.

While this study was done in rats, it does help to explain some important phenomenon seen in humans.

Neurodegenerative Disease, Leg Exercises, and Stem Cells

Neurodegenerative diseases consist of brain and nervous system illnesses like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, an ALS. One of the big commonalities with this class of neurological disorders is that they they will eventually take away your independent ability to move.

Dr. Danielle Botaii, one of the authors of the study, wanted to investigate whether it was the gradual deterioration or the nervous system compromised muscular function, or if there was a possibility that loss of mobility from these diseases accelerated brain deterioration. [Source]

The study used mice and restricted the use of their hind legs and were compared to control mice who roamed normally. The researchers found that the mice who didn’t have normal use of their legs showed:

  • 70% decrease in neural stem cells compared to controls
  • Decreased maturation of support cells in the brain
  • Decreased expression of key genes for mitochondrial health

All of this to say that simply taking away the function of their legs could have significant ramifications for the ability of the brain to develop, adapt, and repair properly. With compromised stem cell production, less glial cell maturation, and worse energetics, you deal the brain a harder hand to play with. So much of our brain is built to provide action and resistance to gravity, and your legs play a huge role in that.

Squatting Your Way to a Better Brain

So the title of this article was definitely hyperbolic and click-baity. Guilty as charged. But the idea of squatting your way to better brain health sounds pretty sexy when you’re a doctor that lifts.

Working on that Snatch/Overhead Squat…..for brain health purposes

It’s super unlikely that your 1 rep max squat is going to be useful as a brain biomarker (though one can hope!), but there’s growing evidence that moving your legs frequently and often is phenomenal for your brain. One might even be able to make the case that running, jumping, squatting, and any other movement that keeps your legs strong may have more brain benefits than weight loss benefits.

There’s been ample evidence in mouse models that showed steady state running had significant effects on brain cell growth in a key memory area of the brain called the hippocampus. There’s also been compelling studies showing sedentary behavior reduced brain volume in parts of the brain which couldn’t be overcome by casual exercise.

There’s really no human evidence yet that shows that squatting will change the brain, but I feel strongly that preserving leg strength is one of those key things that differentiate those that age poorly and those that age with grace.

It’s definitely way too early, but I say we jump start the movement to 1RM for your Brain and let the evidence come in after the fact. Squat regularly and squat often friends.

7 Healthy Habits for a Balanced Life

7 Healthy Habits for a Balanced Life

#1 – Managing your Digestive Health or Gut Flora. What you eat on a daily basis can have damaging effects to produce bad bacteria in your digestive tract. Some key depletions are antibiotics, fried foods instead of fresh, and sugars that can create toxins. Probiotic supplements can help to produce good bacteria and aid in balanced digestion.

#2 – Your body needs Enzymes to help break down foods. Enzymes like Lipase to digest fats, Protease to break down proteins, Amylase to digest starch, and Cellulase to break down sugars can help since many of our foods that we ea today are cooked and processed. Each person has unique levels of this process that can drop significantly with age.

#3 – Multi – Vitamins help balance you to optimal health. Many vitamins can be found in whole foods or natural source, although they may not be able to absorb properly. Vitamins should be Gender and Age appropriate and not contain fillers or binders that prevent smooth digestion.

#4 – Get plenty of sleep! Getting a lot of Sleep is necessary to restore us after long days of work and play. Herbal supplements, vitamins, and natural caffeine’s like tea can help in this process.

#5 – Antioxidants boosts your immune system. Fruits and Vegetables provide Vitamin C, Vitamin, E, and beta-carotene

which help build healthy cells to prevent many common diseases. Green or Black Tea also have many benefits including

fluoride, which inhibits growth of the bacteria that cause plaque.

#6 – Balance your Acidity and Akeline levels. A good rule of balanced health is to drink a glass of room temperature water when you wake up and before you go to sleep to help balance the Acidity and Akeline in your digestive system. This also helps to kick-start your Metabolism, removes toxins, and

hydrates your body.

#7 – Maintaining your Metabolism. Eating every 3-4 hours helps in balancing blood sugar levels and to not store

fat. A diet consistent in half vegetables, quarter protein and a quarter carbs, along with exercise helps to keep your

digestive system in order.
