Susan G. Komen Florida Teams Up with Chick-fil-A to Fight Breast Cancer

On Monday, April 1st, Two Area Restaurants Will Host “Spirit Day” Events for the Cause

WELLINGTON, FL. – Looking for a fool-proof way to support the lifesaving work of Susan G. Komen Florida?  On Monday, April 1st, just mention the organization when you order your Chick-fil-A favorites at their Royal Palm Beach or The Mall at Wellington Green locations. A percentage of your sale will benefit the lifesaving work the foundation is doing right here in our community. Catering orders that are placed throughout the day and either picked up or delivered (minimum charge applies for delivery) will also have a portion of sales dedicated to the cause.

The effort, created by Royal Palm Beach teenager Talia Fitter, is just one way the community is being creative in their fight against breast cancer. “Watching my mother battle the disease, and win, inspired me to want to do more to help others,” shared Fitter. “If it was not for the grant issued by Komen Florida, my mother would not have been able to receive screenings or subsequent treatment. It truly saved her life and for that we are grateful.”

The Royal Palm Beach restaurant is at 206 S State Road 7, West Palm Beach, FL 33414 in the Home Depot Shopping Center and will be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.: https://www.chick-fil-a.com/Locations/FL/Royal-Palm-Beach. The Mall at Wellington Green location will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at 10300 Forest Hill Blvd, Suite FC108, Wellington, FL 33414: https://www.chick-fil-a.com/Locations/FL/The-Mall-at-Wellington-Green. A PAGE FROM THE LOST DIARY OF TOULOUSE-LAUTREC

A PAGE FROM THE LOST DIARY OF TOULOUSE-LAUTREC

By Don Conway

Emile Bernard 1885 Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec 1864-1901 Bequeathed by Arthur Jeffress 1961 http://www.tate.org.uk/art/work/T00465

For many years there has been speculation that the artist Toulouse-Lautrec (TL) kept a personal diary. Following his death on September 9, 1901 due to the combined effects of syphilis and alcoholism, his personal effects were taken over by his mother. She was determined to promote the artistic works of her unfortunate son. No diary was found however the rumor of its existence persisted.

In 2015 a descendent of Rosa La Rouge, a Parisian prostitute with whom TL had lived from 1886 to1887 came upon his diary among La Rouge’s belongings. The long-lost diary of TL had been found at last.

The last entry in the diary is dated Wednesday, May 19, 1886— a momentous day in the artist’s life as told in his own words. That entry is presented here.

Toulouse-Lautrec

Wednesday

May 19, 1886

Dr. Mathieu has confirmed his original diagnosis. I have the Pox*

I have no doubt that I contracted it from Rosa…not that that matters. I think she does not even know she has it. I must speak to her about this. Poor Rosa. I must also send a personal warning to Oscar.** He is living on the edge.

The Doctor has explained that there is no cure for the Pox, only treatments with Mercury. They sound as horrible as the disease itself and there are high risks for disastrous side effects and early death because of Mercury poisoning.

No! I will not undergo the indignity and torment of these Mercury treatments.

The Doctor says it will take ten to fifteen years for the disease to kill me. And it will be an ugly and unpleasant death. So be it. There is always Absinth and more Earthquakes***.

If I have ten to fifteen years to continue my work then I shall make the most of them.

Of course, I must explain all of this to Momma. She worries about me so and this news will add to her burden. It is bad enough she has had to deal with The Old Fool**** for all these years. It is ironic that I should be the one to come down with the Pox. With all his years of womanizing and humiliating Momma it is a wonder he, who so deserves it, did not catch this disease first. Another of life’s injustices…

Had Alphonse*****, lived and not been a dwarf such as I am, he would have been able to provide Momma with some consolation.

Now I must look to my future with some measure of practicality. Will my dear friends at the near-by brothels continue to service me? I think if I procure a supply of the new rubber condoms they will. In their wisdom they are bound to see that this disease is only one more of the manifestations that sets them, and me, apart from the rest of Society. The world of prostitutes, dancers, dwarfs and circus performers, our world, is so afflicted with damaged human beings that the Pox will not make a significant difference to them.

And so, if I continue to be accepted in our world, I will bear witness, through my work, to the fact that though we are society’s outcasts, we are also human beings.

Ten or fifteen more years of paintings, drawings and lithographs may not be enough to teach this lesson to the world but I have no choice but to try to make the rest of humanity see the real us…and me.

*The Pox was a common term for Syphilis in the 1800’s

** Oscar Wilde whom TL had befriended and who was later tried for homosexuality and served two years in a British prison. He died alone and destitute in Paris in 1900.

***Earthquakes were a drink invented by TL consisting of 1 part Absinth and 1 part Cognac.

****The Old Fool was TL’s pejorative for his father with whom he had a contentious relationship.

*****Alphonse was TL’s younger brother who died at an early age.

Let’s Move

Let’s Move

by Melanie Lewis

I was recently invited to participate in an exciting fitness Challenge.  “The Let’s Move: Commit to Change Physical Activity Challenge is a county-wide initiative that focuses on physical activity, nutrition and healthy behaviors. Palm Health Foundation, in partnership with Joe DiMaggio Children’s HospitalChildren’s Services CouncilWisehaupt, Bray Asset Management and CBS12, sponsors the annual challenge, which takes place throughout the month of March.”  I hope to reap many benefits from it as a family and for myself.

Out of all the activities we do as a family, the physically demanding ones are at the top of the “togetherness-building” list for us.  Experiences we have shared are the most embedded memories.  We have been biking, hiking, water skiing, downhill skiing, swimming and snow tubing and running races.  What a blast to be able to do these activities with the kids. They know their parents can do exciting things too. We grow together sharing each other’s trials and triumphs.

Together we reap the benefits of activity:  strength, flexibility, bone density, increased cardiovascular endurance and health, mental acuity, improved behavior, enhanced sleep and better overall wellbeing.  If any of these things are on your list of health goals and they should be, then Let’s Move!!!!

It couldn’t have come at a better time for me. “Sloth mode” would accurately describe my fitness level.  Maintaining a good level of fitness would make it easier to participate when the special activity arises.  That means for me getting some form of exercise at least 3 days a week at a moderate intensity level.  The goal is to carve out 3 hours a week. There are so many difficulties getting exercise and activity as part of our daily schedule:  Where do I start? What to do? Schedule it? Getting out of bed early?  The answer to all of those is anything that works as long as it gets you moving.

Today’s internet provides the answers to many of life’s quandaries.  I discovered a 30-minute fitness program on at 6 A.M. weekdays.  That also solves my get-out-of-bed problem, because it’s not on any other time, unless I purchase the DVD.  I also have an accountability partner; the cat.  He wants to have some sort of attention early in the day, regardless of my ambition to do it.

Join in on the Let’s Move program:  http://letsmovepbc.org/user/register.  Get an app for your phone, a pedometer or other movement monitor. Recording your time becomes a measure of accountability for yourself. When you see you haven’t entered any activity for a couple of days you realize how quickly sloth-mode takes over.

Without a Word, Little Dill Speaks Volumes

Poetry Series focuses on Social-Emotional Learning and Diversity,

based on the thoughts and feelings of a young boy with disabilities.

A SERIES ABOUT LITTLE DILL

BOOK LAUNCH

April 14th 2019, 2:00 pm

Brookdale Palm Beach Gardens

11381 Prosperity Farms Rd

Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33410

Little Dill cannot hear, speak or see, but communicates better than most. In 31 poems he creates alter-egos and friends that become everything he wishes he could be. At the same time teaches his imaginary friends everything they need to know about the most basic elements of human existence: respect, love, forgiveness, perseverance and fear.

Author Gregory Gidman is a seasoned educator with over 30 years of experience teaching in diverse settings. He has taught in 5 Universities and in both private and public schools in the United States and internationally.  He currently teaches in the Palm Beach School District.

Palm Beach County Visual Learning Specialist, Dr. Dianne Tetreault says, “This series was born in the 24-hour darkness of the Canadian High Arctic while the author taught in Inuit communities. The loneliness and isolation he experienced can be felt in the character of little Dill, a child with disabilities. Little Dill does not see himself as a victim but overcomes his limitations through the creation of imaginary friends and a keen sense of hope. This courageous child has an uncanny ability to teach ageless lessons of life.”

Come to our book launch and visit our website to learn more about the poetry series, which consists of a stand-alone poetry book, as well as a poetry book and conversation guide, which is a perfect resource to fulfill the poetry requirement in any language learning curriculum. The purchase of the book includes on-line access to full audio versions of the poems.
