FPL Invites Families this Labor Day to Beat the Heat at Palm Beach Zoo with an Innovative Cooling Station

WHAT: Palm Beach County residents are invited to cool off and join the fun at Florida Power & Light Company’s Cooling Station during the Palm Beach Zoo’s Kids Free Labor Day Weekend event.

Guests will take a moment to “chill” out by walking into a larger-than-life ice cube that refreshes with music and a cold blast of CO2, along with a video souvenir of their experience.

The Cooling Station is the perfect way to recharge the family during a hot day at the zoo. It showcases how customers can beat the heat this summer with FPL’s energy-saving tips and tools – including the new mobile app and the Online Home Energy Survey – and turn themselves into energy experts by taking control of their usage and bill.

This event is free and open to the public.

FoundCare Inc. Hosts 17th Annual Back-to-School Community Health Fair
Thanks To Partnership With T. Leroy Jefferson Medical Society, Local Families Receive Free Care

(West Palm Beach, Fla.) – More than 350 people received health care services at the 17th Annual Back-to-School Community Health Fair over the weekend. The T. Leroy Jefferson Medical Society (TLJMS) and FoundCare, Inc. partnered to host the event at the health center’s West Palm Beach location to kick off National Health Center Week, August 13-19.

Designed to offer free health services to meet the growing needs of the community, the event offered immunizations, screenings, physicals, dental checkups, health education and more. In addition, families who participated in the free medical screenings received backpacks filled with school supplies.

“We are proud to have partnered with the T. Leroy Jefferson Medical Society for another successful year of serving underserved, underinsured and at-risk community members,” said Dr. Oneka Marriott, Chief Medical Officer for FoundCare. “In advance of National Health Center week, we were happy to let people know that our Federally Qualified Health Center can assist families with affordable healthcare and serve as a patient-centered medical home. We are here to offer these services year-round, and are pleased to have helped families who might not otherwise get this opportunity to receive care.”

FoundCare, Inc. is a nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center that offers pediatric and adult primary care, chronic disease management, behavioral health services, dentistry, laboratory services and X-rays, and an on-site pharmacy, all in one location. FoundCare accepts most insurance plans, Medicaid, Medicare and self-pay on a sliding fee scale that is based on family size and income.

“We were thrilled to collaborate with FoundCare to invest in the health and welfare of vulnerable families to cultivate a healthy community,” said Dr. Litzrudy Justinvil, Health Fair Committee Chair for T. Leroy Jefferson Medical Society. “We know that the cost of healthcare can be stressful for families, and access to culturally competent physicians and other clinical specialists can be limited. That’s why we love putting on this event every year.”

FoundCare staff and T. Leroy Jefferson Medical Society members volunteer their time to provide services completely free of charge. TLJMS has been organizing the Community Health Fair for 17 years, offering locals comprehensive primary care at no cost, which they might not otherwise receive, from predominantly minority physicians and other clinical specialists who donate their services.

Sponsors of this year’s health fair included Law Offices of Craig Goldenfarb, Merrill Lynch, UBS Financial Services and Guardians Credit Union. Funders that made the health fair possible included Jack & Jill Foundation of America, Pfizer Foundation, and Quantum Foundation.

Visitors are invited to cool off and join the fun at Florida Power & Light Company’s Cooling Station this Sept. 9-10 at the Museum Plaza of the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in Downtown Miami’s Museum Park. It’s the perfect location to cool down during some of the city’s hottest events including: Free Second Saturdays at the Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), DWNTWN Art Days and the Arsht Center’s ArtsLaunch.

YWCA Seeks Nominations for 2017 Barry Krischer Award

The YWCA of Palm Beach County is seeking nominations for its 2017 Barry Krischer Humanitarian Award. Established in 2008 to honor the then-retiring State Attorney, the award recognizes a law enforcement, social services or health care professional or organizational unit that has gone beyond the normal “call of duty” or what normally would be expected of the current job responsibilities to assist or advocate for a victim of domestic violence.

As State Attorney for the 15th Judicial Circuit, Krischer made domestic violence a priority by establishing the Domestic Violence Elimination Program (DOVE) providing advocacy to battered women upon their entry into the criminal justice system; drafting and lobbying for domestic violence legislation; and helping create the Simon C. Fireman Home Safe Center for Children.

The commended service must have taken place between August 1, 2016 and July 31, 2017. Nominations should include the nominee’s name, title, place of employment with phone number, supervisor’s name with phone number, a one-page description of the activity or activities with the victim, and the name and phone number of the person(s) making the nomination.

The award will be presented during October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The deadline for nominations is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 20, 2017.

Fright Nights Turns Sweet 16 in 2017

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — This year marks the 16th anniversary of Fright Nights at the South Florida Fairgrounds and planning is already underway for the event, which opens Fri., Oct. 6, and continues every Thursday, Friday and Saturday through Oct. 28.

Fright Nights started in a tent on the fairgrounds in 2002, was joined by “The Manor” haunters from Clematis in 2003, and eventually grew into the 40,000 square foot Agriplex and two acres of land on the fairgrounds, where it resides today.

Over the years, Fright Nights has evolved into a carnival of terror that offers four new haunted houses each year. In addition, the event includes scare zones, food, entertainment and midway carnival rides, which makes Fright Nights the largest “Scream Park” in West Palm Beach.

This year’s haunts will include the Cuckoo’s Nest, where twisted patients have taken over the asylum; Shutter, a demented look through a killer’s lens; Necromantia, a sadistic alchemist practicing the forbidden dark art of necromancy; and Occultus, entering the mysterious world of the occult, where witches and shamans practice their craft — on those brave enough to enter!

Wellington, FL – Two local organizations, Dream Sponsors, Inc. and The Essence of Africa, Inc. will join forces with North Carolina based non-profit, One Way Out, Inc. for a volunteer mission trip offering services and delivery of much needed supplies to members of several remote African villages located in Kenya this October. Last summer Emmanuel Tasur, the founder of Sirua Aulo Academy, based in Masa Mara, Kenya, was hosted here in Wellington, by the Dream Sponsors team. Sirua Aulo, the #1 school in the district, has nearly 650 youth enrolled between the primary school and high school. Most of these youth come from rural villages and live in extreme poverty. Education is their only hope of a better life. Many youth live in dorms on campus while others walk in excess of 3 to 5 miles each way to get to school. Emmanuel is in need of support to help raise the quality of life and the nutritional diet for these children. Currently, the school can only afford to provide very minimal food options, with limited choices.


Over the years, Dream Sponsors, Inc. has seen the need to advance their mission to sponsor more self-sustaining projects that benefit a larger number of youth, as opposed to just sponsoring one individual child’s school fees, through individual sponsorships matched with youth in need.
Dream Sponsors, Inc. is seeking donations to initiate a Poultry Farming Project to be housed on the Sirua Aulo High School Campus. The Project budget will include construction of a structure and fencing to contain the chickens, purchase of chickens, start-up feed and instructional materials for the students. The project will cost about $6000 USD total. We believe this is a quality project that will not only benefit the youth at the campus, but also serve the local community. This self-sustaining project will provide eggs for the student meals, while also contributing to a farming curriculum at the high
school. This new project will also provide youth with the means to participate in hands on learning about agricultural farming practices. Further they will learn business skills by marketing and selling eggs in the local Maasai Community.

The team hopes to raise the start-up funds prior to this volunteer visit, so they can personally participate in the launch of this project while in the region. Donations are also being accepted to help with transportation costs for delivery of supplies. The Group is bringing paper, pencils and notebooks for the orphans and village children who attend schools where water and electricity are non-existent; socks and sweaters for the women during cooler temperatures; and baseball type hats for the men to protect them from the sun. Donations will also help support the hiring of a Kenyan-based photographer
to document their journey and share the stories of the Maasai women, men and children. The images will be used for educational purposes with our local schools here in the US, providing valuable cultural learning opportunities.

Does the thought of improving your home landscapes seem daunting? Laura McLeod, certified landscape designer and horticultural professional, will explore the basics of good design and walk participants through each step of the planning process. Attendees will go out into the Garden and see some of the best performers for South Florida landscapes to help them gather ideas for their own landscape. In the final class, McLeod and experts from Mounts will review and positively critique the landscape designs that students created at home.

Celebrate the 13th year of Stories in the Garden by bringing young ones (ages 2-6) to these FREE nature-themed programs co-sponsored by the Palm Beach Library System. No reservations required, except for parties of six or more. A craft activity to culminate each day will be reserved for the first 30 registrants.

WASHED ASHORE:
Art to Save the Sea
December 2, 2017 – March 31, 2018

Grace the Humpback Whale, the first of 10 larger than life sea creatures, all made from hundreds of pieces of plastic debris washed up form the ocean, is already on display at Mounts – the other nine WASHED ASHORE sculptures will arrive later this year. Chief Medical Officer and Advanced Illness Specialist Scheduled As Keynote Speaker

Wellington, FL, August 14, 2017 – Wellington Cares will host its third annual luncheon on Friday, October 6th at Wanderers Club in Wellington. This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Leonard R. Hock, Jr., DO, MACOI, CMD, Chief Medical Officer of Trustbridge Palliative Care and Advanced Illness Management. Dr. Hock is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. His is also a Diplomat of the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and a Member of the American Academy of Hospice/Palliative Medicine.

 

“We are excited to have Dr. Hock as the keynote speaker at our third annual luncheon,” said Wellington Cares Executive Director, Kathy Foster. “Dr. Hock developed a palliative case management model for acute care hospitals that has proven to be successful in decreasing the length of stay and acute care costs, while increasing the comfort measures for the end-of-life patient and support to family members.”

 

In his role as Chief Medical Officer of Harbor Palliative Care and Advanced Illness Management of TrustBridge Health, Dr. Hock has concentrated his efforts on building a physician team and expanding a contracted physician network with much success. He was elected to the Board of the Florida Medical Directors Association and appointed Chair of the Hospice subsection.

Grumman Mohawk Gunship flew in Four Wars

Palm Springs, FL (8/12/2017) – Several years ago a historic WWII Douglas C-47 Dakota Skytrain that flew in Normandy on D-Day in 1944, and one of only five left today, was delivered to the G-Star Studios (www.gstarstudios.com) back lot owned by the G-Star School of the Arts for Film, Animation and Performing Arts (www.gstarschool.org) in Palm Springs, Florida. It has appeared in several movies and numerous videos, commercials and TV productions. This Wednesday, August 16th it will be joined as a permanent fixture on the motion picture studios’ back lot with a Vietnam-era Grumman Mohawk gunship airplane that saw action in Vietnam, The Gulf War, Afghanistan and Iraq. The Mohawk will be towed on its own wheels from the Lantana Airport six miles north on S. Congress Ave. to the G-Star School of the Arts in Palm Springs, three blocks south of Forest Hill Blvd. at approximately 11 AM.  The plane is being donated by Paul Pefley, owner of Mohawk Technologies.  Transportation provided by Kauff’s Towing.
