(West Palm Beach – July 18, 2016) Communities In Schools of Palm Beach County, Inc. AT&T is no stranger when it comes to supporting Communities In Schools. AT&T staff spend time each year at a school sharing job readiness activities with high school students. “With this AT&T support we will be able to continue our critical and proven work of providing students with whatever it takes for them to achieve,” said Margaret Bagley, Executive Director.

The So-Flo Tap Fest August 19 & 20, a Whole Lotta Tapping

The So-Flo Tap Fest, a Whole Lotta Tapping

Interview by Krista Martinelli

I had the chance to ask co-owner of That’s Dancing Andrea La Maina about the annual So-Flo Tap Festival, which she founded.  This is a two-day event that brings together several of the most accomplished tap dancers in the country to celebrate the art of tap dancing and sharing its rich American history in a studio setting with a new generation.

Processed with VSCO with e3 preset

AW: Why did you decide to start the So-Flo Tap Festival?

I had been talking about doing this for years.  Our future generations can learn about America’s art form without traveling to NY or LA.  In a studio setting, the classes are intimate…it is like getting a boutique tap experience!  I felt it was something that was needed in our community, and it’s my passion.

AW: How many years has it been happening?

This will be the 3rd Annual So-Flo Tap Festival.  We also have had some smaller tap events happen throughout the season.  The big event is in August every year.  This year it will be August 19 and 20.

Check out this short video from last year’s tap festival, held at That’s Dancing in Lake Worth.

https://youtu.be/h3Kg3wJLzgg

AW: Is tap your favorite kind of dance?  What makes tap dancing special, in your eyes?

Each genre of dance is extraordinary, but tap holds a special place in my heart.  The fusion of the movement and rhythm is magical when your feet hit the floor.  It’s exciting and invigorating for me.

Processed with VSCO with e5 preset

AW: Are there any other tap festivals in Florida?  How can people register?

There’s one other small festival on the West Coast, the Tampa Bay Tap Festival, a one-day event in June.  People can register for our 2-day event online at Register.ThatsDancing.com and use the keyword:  “So Flo”. Those who are interested should act quickly because it will sell out.

AW: Tell us about the instructors.

TapFest2016

The faculty line-up for this 2016 event is super-exciting.  All of them are extremely active in the tap dance community.  Their resumes are all outstanding.  These instructors provide a plethora of information and they really embody that link to the history of tap, bringing it to this future generation.

Dormishia Sumbry Edwards – She has been a part of every tap dance routine in major movies since the 80’s.  She was also the private tap instructor to Michael Jackson for over 11 years.  Her experience includes acclaimed runs on Broadway and off-Broadway shows.  Most recently, she was part of a performance at Jacob’s Pillow, a dance festival – “And Still You Must Swing,” along with Derick Grant and Jason Samuels Smith (who are both also on the 2016 So-Flo Roster!)

Derick Grant – He was an original company member of Bring in Da Noise and Bring in Da Funk.  Derick recently recorded a new hip hop single that meshes the rhythms of hip hop music and tap dancing.  He raps to tap sounds using his rhythms as inspiration.  He is one of the So Danca sponsors (based in Florida), and So Danca is a sponsor of the 2016 event.

Alexis Juliano – She is best-known as a finalist on So You Think You Can Dance in season 10. Alexis is local and grew up training in South Florida.  She won three gold medals at the Tap Olympics.  Most recently, Alexis toured with STOMP and performed on “Grease Live”.   She has also done an internet release of tap dance choreography to the  Chainsmokers.

Anthony Morigerato – Most recently he was nominated for an Emmy for his choreography on So You Think You Can Dance. He is the current Guinness Book of World Records holder for the most tap sounds in one minute – 1,163 taps.  He serves as faculty with NUVO Dance Conventions and is the founder of the online tap experience OPERATION TAP.

Jason Samuels Smith – He’s a performer, choreographer, director and has emerged as a multi-talented leader in the art form of tap.  He received the Dance Magazine award, won an Emmy and choreography award for outstanding choreography, a tribute to the late Gregory Hines.  He is the founder of the L.A. Tap Festival.  He’s been on So You Think You Can Dance as a choreographer, and as an associate choreographer for Dancing with the Stars.  He designed a tap shoe made by Bloch Dancewear, Bloch is a 2016 sponsor of our event.

Aaron Tolson – He is a national spokesperson for So Danca.  He is a consultant and writer for Dance Spirit Magazine.  He performed with River Dance for 6 years and was featured as a soloist and dance captain. He is the creator of “Sole Power Fitness” which combines tap dancing and fitness and was featured on LIVE with Kelly and Michael promoting his brand.  He teaches at Broadway Dance Center and for several tap festivals around the country and abroad.

AW: Describe the classes that will be offered.

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset

The great thing about this festival is there are 3 different levels of classes to enroll in.  Intermediate/Advanced (7 and up) is for our “Aspiring Rhythm Makers”.  Advanced (recommended for 10 and up) is for our “Breakthrough Rhythm Technicians”. And Pre/Professional is for our “Dedicated Professional Rhythm Track,” specially designed for professionals and teachers. Younger dancers get to be surrounded by tap dancers with a lot of experience – it’s one big tap community.  Classes start Friday, August 19th with three offerings for each level.  On Saturday, August 20th, we are offering 4 more classes per level from 10am to 5pm.  This is immediately followed by a Rhythm Jam for all students and faculty.

schedule

AW: Yes, I heard from one of the participants last year that the final “Tap Jam” is a lot of fun!  Tell us about that.

The Tap Jam is an amazing way for all the tap dancers come together and do just that – “jam”.  It is awesome!  It’s done in such a fun way – it’s not intimidating, it’s exciting.

AW: You run a busy dance studio, That’s Dancing.  How many students come through your classes in a year?  How do you juggle motherhood with the dance life?

About 850 dancers pass through our hallway each season.  I have an incredible support system, the faculty and staff treats this business as their own.  They take pride in our mission.  I feel honestly blessed to be surrounded by so many positive hard working people.  They believe in That’s Dancing.  It’s like having a puzzle that fits perfectly together.  It works.  And that is precisely what allows me to continue balancing the life as a Mama, a successful business owner, a dance teacher and a choreographer.

AW: When do the fall classes begin at That’s Dancing?

August 29th.

Processed with VSCO with e1 preset

AW: What’s the best thing about the So-Flo Tap Festival?

The best thing is that a whole community of tap dancers come together.  This year we have tappers from all over Florida and coming as far as New Hampshire.  We are coming together to share the love of the great American art form of tap dancing.  That is just so cool.  And knowing that I have created an environment with this festival where dancers from all over the state and the country feel welcome is an amazing feeling.

AW: Anything else?

I have to note that I couldn’t have put this together without the help of the incredible faculty member Nicole Gonzalez.  She started with us as a student, then joined our Fusion Force dance company.  She received her B.A. from University of Central Florida. She went on to perform with several theme parks and production companies.  She toured as Elmo with Sesame Street Live.  She returned back “home” (at our studio) and became faculty.  She helped me to produce the 2016 So-Flo Tap Festival.  She’s been integral in securing many sponsors for our event, as well as planning and organizing the festival.  Seeing Nicole go from a student to a faculty member and now a co-producer of a national event has been rewarding in itself.  She remembers me talking about how I wanted to start this festival back when she was 13!  I know she believes in the worth of this festival just as much as I do.  We have the same passion.

I want to thank So Danca – in addition to being a sponsor, they are housing two tap artists and provided two full tuition scholarships.   They also provide a sling bag for each participant. Bloch Dancewear is donating two pairs of the Jason Samuels Smith tap shoes for an auction/ raffle.

The sponsorships from local businesses are what allow us to continue to get the high-quality faculty to instruct at our tap festival.  We are grateful for the support of Dancewear Corner from Orlando, Dancers Haul and Fastfoot Portable Tap Floors for their contributions to the event.  If your local business wants to find a way to be part of the 2016 So Flo Tap Fest or future events, contact Andrea at [email protected]  It is going to be an incredible event!

Eau Palm Beach’s Chef will be Featured Chef at the James Beard House in NYC

ANGLE CHEF DE CUISINE MANLEE SIU TO BE FEATURED CHEF AT JAMES BEARD HOUSE AUGUST 8TH

Local residents can watch Le Cordon Bleu graduate in the kitchen via “chef cam” as she prepares a menu of Florida-inspired flavors at famed New York City venue

PALM BEACH, Fla. – Manlee Siu, Chef de Cuisine of Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa’s Angle restaurant, will be the featured chef at the James Beard House in New York City on Monday, August 8th. This is Siu’s first invitation to cook for dinner guests at the prestigious New York City culinary venue that was once the home of legendary American Chef James Beard.

Local fans of Chef Siu will be able to watch her at work during this special evening by accessing an online “chef cam” set up in the kitchen at the James Beard House, available at www.jamesbeard.org/kitchen-cam. The video feed will be live on August 8th beginning at 6:15 p.m.

Siu, a native of Hong Kong and a graduate of both the University of California and Le Cordon Bleu, has helmed Angle since May of 2015. She joined the resort’s culinary team along with award-winning Executive Chef Thomsen, who has called Siu his “best ingredient” in their culinary collaborations over the years.

“I am thrilled to have the incredible opportunity to cook in the kitchen of the James Beard House,” said Siu, who will be joined that evening by Angle Pastry Chef Robert Bellini. “All chefs owe so much to the culinary inspiration of James Beard and the mission of this foundation, and we are honored to be chosen to represent Angle and Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa next month.”

Since joining the team at Eau Palm Beach, Siu has debuted elegant, Florida-inspired dishes such as her butter-poached Florida lobster with “caviar” – pearl pasta poached with squid ink – served in a signature caviar tin. Always a passionate advocate of locally-grown and sourced ingredients, Siu has established a pickling and fermenting process at the resort that preserves the best flavors of each season for use in Angle’s menus throughout the year.

For the Beard House event, Siu has curated a decadent “Palm Beach Panache” dinner of locally-inspired dishes, featuring ingredients such as Key West shrimp, Loxahatchee alligator and eggs from Lake Meadow farms in Ocoee, FL. (To view the complete menu, visit www.jamesbeard.org/events/palm-beach-panache).

“All of us at Eau Palm Beach are extremely proud of Chef Siu for having earned this invitation,” said Thomsen. “It’s truly a testament to not only her culinary skill, but also her dedication to the mission of the Beard Foundation to ‘celebrate and nurture’ America’s diverse culinary history. Chef Siu is the embodiment of that idea.”

Becoming a chef was a major life change for Siu, who earned a bachelor’s degree in managerial economics from UC Davis before joining her family’s restaurant operations. After 10 years she knew her true passion was cooking – taught to her as a child by her mother after the family moved to northern California when Siu was 4 – and decided to formally study cooking at Le Cordon Bleu in San Francisco. Upon graduating, she immediately joined the staff at the awarding-winning Gary Danko restaurant in San Francisco. Not long after, she met rising star Chef Josh Thomsen, and the two collaborated to open the Meritage restaurant at the Claremont Resort & Spa in Berkeley, CA, where Siu was Chef de Cuisine.

Following her time at Meritage, Siu became Chef de Cuisine at Revival Bar & Kitchen in Berkeley. There, she began exploring and teaching the concept of “snout to tail, root to shoot and farm to table,” a restaurant philosophy that seeks to provide guests with the highest-quality, freshest food while eschewing waste and non-seasonal ingredients.

Siu joined Thomsen in re-locating to the east coast to launch a true farm-to-table restaurant, Agricola, which operates its own 120-acre farm in Princeton, New Jersey. Agricola was named one of the top restaurants in just its first four months of opening and one of the Ten Best New Restaurants in the United States in 2014 by Gayot.

When she is not in the kitchen, Siu can be found unwinding with a new cookbook or seeking out a local farm to find new ingredients for Angle. She is a supporter of the James Beard Foundation, the March of Dimes and Meals on Wheels.

Mounts Botanical Garden of Palm Beach County

Mounts Botanical Garden of Palm Beach County To Start Construction This Fall on New Permanent Exhibit Windows on the Floating World Beautiful New Tropical Wetlands Garden will Enthrall and Educate Visitors on Critical Importance of Conserving & Protecting Fresh Water

Rendering of the proposed Windows on the Floating World exhibit at Mounts Botanical Garden

(West Palm Beach, FL – July 13, 2016)  The Friends of Mounts Botanical Garden today announced that construction will start this fall on a new permanent exhibit, Windows on the Floating World, a series of see-through walkways and permanent and moveable aquatic plants that will allow visitors to feel and connect to the tropical wetlands around them.

“The immersive installation of Windows on the Floating World will reveal a full spectrum of the Wetland Garden at Mounts,” says Polly Reed, President of the Friends of Mounts Botanical Garden. “Boardwalks, benches and displays constructed over and around the wetlands will allow visitors to relax, reflect, and learn about ecology and our critical need to conserve and protect fresh water.”

“Demands for clean, fresh water continue to grow so there is an urgent need to educate the public, young and old, on the importance of practices that will better help us to protect this extraordinary natural resource,” she adds. “A wetlands is a land area that is saturated with water, either permanently or seasonally, and takes on the characteristics of a distinct ecosystem that serves as home to a wide range of plant and animal life”

Windows on the Floating World will feature transparent, open-gridded, 3-foot wide walkways on the surface of the wetlands to give visitors the feeling of walking on water. Within these walks are four windows that will be planted with aquatics and changed out with rotating and seasonal botanical exhibits growing from submerged containers. Additional highlights will include waterfalls flowing over natural stone, an area for wading birds, and a wall covered with Bromeliads, offering some of the best foliage colors in the plant kingdom.

“Most importantly, our Windows on the Floating World exhibit will be a place for demonstration and education,” says Rochelle Wolberg, Director of Programs and Interim Operations Manager at Mounts. “This environmental installation will provide an immersive experience for visitors, prompting them to more closely examine the nature surrounding them and its inner workings. For school children and their teachers, it will be an exceptional model to educate on water quality and usage, and the role each one of us can play in water conservation.”

Presented in cooperation with Palm Beach County’s Art in Public Places program and projected to cost about $500,000, Windows on the Floating World is generously funded in part by Margaret Blume, The Batchelor Foundation, Palm Beach County and the Friends of Mounts Botanical Garden.

Wellington, FL (July 14, 2016) — Dressage riders from around Wellington, Florida came together on an especially hot Florida morning this weekend to hone their skills with USDF Gold Medalist Devon Kane at a clinic hosted by Gold Coast Dressage Association (GCDA) and sponsored by Choice of Champions International. The riders, of varying levels, were able to learn valuable information from the international competitor at her own Diamante Farms, which is a year-round, top notch training facility just minutes from the Adequan Global Dressage Festival and Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington.

Kane, who hosts successful clinics across the United States, was thrilled to host this event at Diamante Farms, which she and her mother Terri Kane own. “I think that clinics are great because you can really help people with a specific issue,” said Kane after the Saturday morning clinic. “It is a unique opportunity for me to really make a difference for the participants and give them something to take home and work with.”

Kane has trained under three Olympians, and has earned a slew of impressive titles in prestigious dressage arenas around the world all before the age of 30. She has been unstoppable in the show ring ever since she stepped into the spotlight as the Individual Gold and Team Bronze medalist at the North American Junior and Young Rider Championships in 2007. Kane earned the title of 2014 U.S. Dressage Finals Grand Prix Champion with her self-trained horse Destiny, and represented Team USA at the Nations Cup CDIO5* in Falsterbo, Sweden, in 2015. She is currently bringing several other horses up the ranks, with whom she has been scoring over 70 percent at major U.S. horse show venues this year.

As well as being a successful rider and sought-after clinician, Kane is the head trainer at Diamante Farms. The property was perfectly suited for hosting the GCDA clinic, with a naturally bright and airy covered arena that looked over the impeccably manicured property. Kane was happy to spend her day with the horses, riders, and auditors that took part in the GCDA clinic. “It’s always fun to work with different people and horses and meet new combinations,” she said.

Rider Anna Niehaus and her horse Ziggy, a 10-year-old Oldenburg gelding, received even more than Kane’s instruction by participating in the clinic. Neihaus, who is well known in the area as a local realtor, and Ziggy had a difficult start to their hour-long session with Kane, as Ziggy adjusted to his new surroundings. The pair finished on a high note, though, and Niehaus was named the Most Improved Rider of the clinic. As Most Improved Rider, she earned a Choice of Champions International gift basket complete with an embroidered saddle pad, hat, and popular Choice of Champions products like Super Joint Solution® and Easy Does It®.

“Anna’s horse was a little hot and tricky and she really stuck with it and got him through some of the issues he was having,” said Kane. “She did a great job at exposing him to new things while still keeping him calm, and throughout the ride she achieved some really nice results.”

Kane was grateful to her own sponsor Choice of Champions International for donating the Most Improved Rider award, and to the Gold Coast Dressage Association for partnering with her to host the clinic. The GCDA is an educational organization dedicated to supporting local and national amateur dressage, as well as growing the knowledge and public awareness of animal care and welfare. GCDA’s efforts include providing educational programs, clinics, shows, and seminars intended to promote classical riding. The Kane family was proud to host a GCDA clinic at their family farm, as giving back to the Wellington community has always been an important part of Diamante Farms’ mission.
