Annual Food Drive Benefits 15 Charities

Fifteen community charities were the recipients of 1,000 bags of food purchased and filled by the Knights and Dames of the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem Knights Hospitaller, Commandery of the Palm Beaches. The agencies in turn distributed the bags to needy families throughout Palm Beach County. This year’s recipients were: The Academy of Nursing & Health Occupations, the Ascension Catholic Church in Boca Raton, Boca Helping Hands, the Children’s Home Society, Delray Beach CROS Caring Kitchen, the Farmworkers Coordinating Council of Palm Beach County, the First Haitian Baptist Church in Belle Glade, Matthew 25 Ministries, Operation Hope, Place of Hope, St. Mary’s Catholic Church Pahokee, St. Vincent Ferrer’s Care Ministry, The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd Tequesta, Urban Youth Impact, and the YWCA Child Care Centers.

This year’s annual drive was chaired by Chevalier Austin Bohlman whose late father, Chevalier Chris Bohlman chaired the first food project in 2003. Nearly 50 members of the Order and friends participated in the two day process of handling over 10,000 pounds of dry and canned goods. “Each bag’s contents is sufficient for a family to have three meals a day for 1-2 weeks. Our Moms were overjoyed to tears to receive them”, stated Suzanne Turner, CEO of the YWCA.

Mushroom Gruyere Quiche

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. For the crust: Use a 9-inch whole wheat ready-made crust.

Preparing the filling: Heat 2 teaspoons of oil in a large nonstick pan over a medium-low heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and caramelized, about 20 minutes. Transfer the onions to a bowl. Add the remaining 2 teaspoons of oil to the pan and heat over a medium-high heat. Add the mushrooms and cook, stirring occasionally, until they begin to brown, about 5 minutes. Add the onions back to the pan, stir in the salt, pepper, mustard and thyme.
In a medium bowl whisk together the eggs, egg whites and evaporated milk.
Sprinkle the cheese into the pie crust. Top with the mushroom-onion mixture and pour the egg mixture on top. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees F. Bake for 35 minutes or until knife inserted in the middle comes out clean. Let stand for 5 minutes.


For the filling:
4 teaspoons olive oil
1 large onion, sliced thinly into half moons
8 ounces sliced mixed mushrooms, such as cremini, oyster, shiitake
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme leaves (or 1 teaspoon dry)
3 large eggs
3 egg whites
1 cup evaporated fat-free milk (not condensed milk)
2/3 cup grated Gruyere cheese (about 1-ounce)

Artisans On The Ave Gallery

This is a free event, refreshments will be served.

 

The male artist creates with the determined focus of his vision and the strength of his talented hands. A potter uses a gentle touch to form his clay and molds it into a perfectly formed vase or bowl. When the piece is finished he will then decide on a glazing color from a vast spectrum of choices.

The painter is inspired by his surroundings and dreams that dance in his head in an abstract manner. He then gently or boldly holds his brush and applies the strokes to his choice of canvas, paper or other mediums. The photographer holds the camera with his hands and sees the image through his eyes and then transfers them onto a selected background.

The poet and writer gently holds his pen as the words flow to the paper grabbing the reader’s attention and taking them to a distant place as their eyes read his thoughts. The pen was made by the artist’s creative hands.

The artist who makes one of a kind wearable art such as jewelry, or fiber pieces precisely uses his hands to make his art sometimes applying jewels and gems to his pieces. The powerful touch of the artist can turn steel into sculpture with the torch and fire used to sculpt raw beams into works of art. His powerful hands work along his massive body as he welds together heavy pieces that can also transform found objects into functional art, such as mirrors and lamps.

The woodworker carves works of beauty into the bare pieces of a trees limbs or trunk that might be found in the woods or given to him by friends. His hands touch the sometimes exotic patterns and grains and he sees the object it will become. His hands grip the tools he needs to make intricate designs into his choice of wood. The hands of the wood-turner work the wood on a lathe and the raw wood transforms into an object of beauty. The scars and lines on the male artist’s hands reveal the true passion and struggles he might go through to allow each of us to enjoy and be thankful that he is an artist.

FoundCare’s Medical Director Urges Prevention to Combat Heat Stroke, Sunburn

(West Palm Beach, FL) – Friday, May 27th kicks off the Memorial Day weekend holiday, but it’s also National Heat Safety Awareness Day, a time when Florida residents need to be particularly aware of the dangers present when enjoying the beach, barbecues and other outdoor activities.

Dr. Katina Bonaparte, Medical Director at FoundCare’s Federally Qualified Health Center in West Palm Beach, says prevention is the best way to stay safe and have fun over Memorial Day weekend and all summer long. Following are some of her best practices and tips for preventing heat stroke and sunburn:

Heat stroke: Heat stroke is the last stage of overheating, which can start with cramps and then become heat exhaustion. Symptoms to watch for include headaches, dizziness, nausea and vomiting.

The best ways to prevent heat stroke include:
Avoid outdoor activity in the middle of the day, when temperatures are highest
Hydrate frequently with water and sports drinks to replace electrolytes, and supervise children to make sure they do the same
Wear loose, lightweight and light-colored clothing
Avoid drinks containing alcohol or caffeine when outside, as these accelerate dehydration
Never leave children or pets in cars, even for a minute (Dr. Bonaparte suggests leaving a baby bottle or diaper bag in the front of the car as an extra visual reminder that a child is in the back seat.)

If you think you or someone else is experiencing heat exhaustion or heat stroke, call 9-1-1 immediately, seek shelter inside an air-conditioned building or in the shade, apply ice wrapped in a towel or article of clothing to armpits or neck, hydrate with water or a sports drink and spray the skin with cool water and sit in front of a fan.

Sunburn: “There’s strong evidence linking sun exposure to skin aging and skin cancer, so it’s important to use sunscreen every day in Florida,” said Dr. Bonaparte. However, spending extra time outdoors at the beach or enjoying other summer activities means adding a few extra steps:
Make sure to use a sunscreen rated SPF 30 or higher, that is also labeled “broad spectrum” to protect against both UVA and UVB rays
Apply sunscreen to all exposed areas 30 minutes before you go out and then every two hours. “Even though a lot of sunscreens say they’re ‘water-resistant,’ you should reapply if you’ve been in the water,” Dr. Bonaparte explained.

“Prevention is the key to enjoying a safe and fun summer,” summarized Dr. Bonaparte. “We all have very busy lives and we’re constantly multitasking. So the trick is to practice a few basic prevention tactics to prepare yourself and your children for the summer ahead.”

Wellington and the American Legion Chris Reyka Memorial Wellington Post 390 will honor all veterans with a Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 30th, 2016. Veterans are invited to walk in a Memorial Day Parade beginning at 8:15 am at Village Hall located at 12300 Forest Hill Boulevard. The parade ends at Wellington’s Veterans Memorial located on the corner of Forest Hill Boulevard and South Shore Boulevard, and will be followed at 8:30 am by the Memorial Day Ceremony.

Wellington has also partnered with the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration to thank and honor all of our Vietnam Veterans, including those held as prisoners of war and those listed as missing in action. Veterans will be recognized for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the United States on this 50th year of remembrance. Wellington has also received a proclamation recognizing its approval as an official Commemorative Program Partner. The Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge) has the largest active wading bird colony in the Everglades this year, with over 7,000 active nests, primarily of White Ibis. Scientists from the South Florida Water Management District recently came out with their survey as monitoring of wading bird nesting and foraging is currently underway. The Refuge is important foraging and nesting habitat for wading birds, and because of the Refuge’s location as the northernmost Everglades, is particularly important foraging habitat during pre-nesting periods. Wading bird nesting in the Everglades, in general, is not off to a strong start this season because of high water levels resulting from the unusually wet dry season. High water levels also delayed the start of nesting season and the survival of chicks in this colony will greatly depend on maintaining stable water depths through mid-summer. Working with our partner agencies to manage water levels to support nesting wading birds (and other taxa) is a priority for Refuge management.  This priority is balanced with other priorities and partner goals, such as flood control and water supply. If you want to learn more about wading birds, the Everglades, or the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, please visit the Refuge Visitor Center. The Refuge is located off U.S. 441/SR 7, two miles south of SR 804 (Boynton Beach Blvd.) and three miles north of SR 806 (Delray Beach’s Atlantic Avenue). The Refuge is currently open from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week. Refuge hours are posted at each entrance. The Visitor Center hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., seven days a week. An entrance fee of $5.00 per vehicle or $1.00 per pedestrian is charged. A variety of annual passes, including a $12.00 Refuge-specific annual pass, are available.
