YWCA Seeks Nominations for 2016 Grace Dodge Award

YWCA Seeks Nominations for 2016 Grace Dodge Award

The YWCA of Palm Beach County is seeking nominations for its 2016 Grace Hoadley Dodge Award. The award is presented annually to a woman residing in Palm Beach County who has overcome adversity and in the process has not only empowered herself but also created opportunities for and led other women toward their own empowerment. These accomplishments have been achieved with dignity and a commitment to peace, justice and freedom.

Grace Hoadley Dodge benefited greatly from the wealth and business acumen of her family. In 1874 at the age of 18, she dropped out of Miss Porter’s School, determined that her interests were not in the program offerings but in helping people in need. She began her career as a social worker and philanthropist teaching Sunday school and sewing classes. She taught for five years at the Children’s Aid Society in New York. She initiated tenement reform in 1879 from her position as Chairperson of the Working Girl’s Society’s Committee on Elevation of the Poor. She was instrumental in the development of the Kitchen Garden Association in New York, later reorganized into the Industrial Education Association that in 1889 became Teachers College. The college became a part of Columbia University in 1889. In 1886 she was given one of the first two seats for women on New York City’s Board of Education. She help establish the Girls’ Public School Athletic League in 1905, acted for six years as the first President of the YWCA of the USA, and was influential in the consolidation of church groups into the New York Travelers Aid Society in 1907 and in the organization of the American Social Hygiene Association in 1912.

Information required on the application includes the nominee’s name, address phone number, and current occupation as well as the adversity she has overcome, how she overcame it and how she has helped empower others. The name and contact information about the person making the nomination is also needed.

The award will be presented at the YWCA’s “Purse & Passion” Luncheon on June 7, 2016, at Bear Lakes Country Club, West Palm Beach.

Applications must be received by the YWCA no later than May 20, 2016 at: Grace Dodge Award Committee, YWCA of Palm Beach County, 1016 N. Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach, FL 33401.

For the 13th year the Wellington Chamber of Commerce presented their signature event Flavors on Friday, April 8. While dining and imbibing guests enjoy the music of Studio 54 Band which consists of 10 seasoned musicians who have toured some of the greatest musical artists of our time. They also got to do a little shopping for artwork from CJR Fine Art and Frame and Clothed 4 Purpose Boutique. The evening culminated with the announcement of the event winners for the evening judged by the Flavors Celebrity Judges Nic Roldan, Mayor Anne Gerwig, Michael Stone, Mike Ferreira, Stephanie Mitrione, Roxanne Stein and Debbie Crompton.

And the winners were Bolay for Best Display, Bolay for Best Plate Presentation, Bolay for Best Dessert and Chef Shannon Atkins of Grand Champions Events for Best of Taste. Bolay owner Chris Gannon was ecstatic as was Chef Shannon who was literally jumping for joy. I would have to agree that Chef Shannon’s Chicken and Waffles was pretty darn tasty.

Each year I wait with avid anticipation for the South Beach Wine and Food Festival. On Thursday, February 25 my trusty husband and photographer, Steve, and I were lucky enough to be invited to the Opening Cocktail Reception by Lee Schrager founder of the event. The weather was perfect for a rooftop party atop the Betsy on Ocean Drive. The evening started off with glasses of Whispering Angel Rosé and Fifty Pounds Gin and was quickly followed by more sushi and hors d’oeuvre than I have ever seen at a party since we were catering. The sushi was so fresh that it was made right in front of us. It doesn’t get any fresher than that. We ate so much that when the party was over we said we couldn’t eat another bite. That was until one more tray of ahi tuna was offered and, well, we just couldn’t resist! On the ride back through Miami Beach on our way home there were banners of every Food Network Star lining the streets.

On Sunday we attended the Bloody Mary Brunch which was actually held at the Ritz-Carlton in Ft. Lauderdale. The weekend long event has gotten so popular that it has grown to encompass venues in Ft. Lauderdale as well. This brunch was hosted by the Chopped Host Ted Allen and all of the Chopped judges. It was delightful to mingle with the likes of Marc Murphy, Marcus Samuelsson, Alex Guarnaschelli, Amanda Frietag, Geoffrey Zacharian and Scott Conant to name a few. And the food and Bloody Marys were never ending! There were eggs prepared many ways, waffles, pancakes, sliders and so much more. We actually ate so much for brunch that we weren’t hungry for dinner.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. —The Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society has renamed an upcoming event for tiger conservation in honor of beloved Zookeeper Stacey Konwiser.
A plaque for the ‘Stacey Konwiser Memorial Save The Tiger 5K’ was unveiled during a Wednesday evening press conference. The race will honor Konwiser’s work at Palm Beach Zoo with four critically endangered Malayan tigers. It is part of the Zoo’s annual ‘Big Cat Series,’ and it will be held on May 14, 2016.

Tuesday evening, friends and family held a private memorial to celebrate the life of Konwiser at Palm Beach Zoo. The following statement from Konwiser’s husband, Jeremy, was released to the media in hopes that the family’s request for privacy and peace is respected.

“Last night we held a beautiful ceremony at the Palm Beach Zoo to celebrate my wife’s life. Stacey would want me to ask that everyone please stand with the Palm Beach Zoo at this difficult time. We spent the last three years working with an amazing team of people and I know Stacey would want our Zoo to be full of visitors and supporters who understand how important our work is on behalf of wildlife.”

The Zoo also announced it has created a ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ page at www.palmbeachzoo.org to keep the community, media and supporters updated on the ongoing investigation.

SCIENCE CENTER GOES “GROSS” FOR SUMMER EXHIBITION “Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body” to open on May 7

SCIENCE CENTER GOES “GROSS” FOR SUMMER EXHIBITION
“Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body” to open on Saturday, May 7

Grossology_Imp

(WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.) What is and is not snot – that is the question – and many more that will be answered by the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium’s summer 2016 exhibition, Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body. Based on the best-selling book, the exhibition is described by leadership at the Science Center as fun, exciting and educational. It will open to the public on Saturday, May 7 with the goal of educating children ages 6-to-14 and their families about why their bodies produce mushy, oozy, crusty, scaly, stinky things, which many people consider gross.

“Kids love gross,” said Lew Crampton, Science Center CEO. “The more gross, the more engaged in learning they become, which is why we selected Grossology as our summer exhibition. Grossology is incredibly interactive and is aimed at educating kids about their bodies and how they function. We are committed to doing whatever it takes to engage young Einsteins to show an interest in science – including getting ‘gross’ for the summer. It is also important to engage kids when they are naturally curious, so they continue to be curious. This is how future problem solvers are born, and we are happy to meet that need in our community as the leader for informal science education.”

Grossology takes visitors on a tour of their bodies, by way of Magic School Bus-style, as they literally step through the mouth of the exhibit. Once inside the exhibit, “Nigel Nose-It-All” will explain why people have runny noses, allergies and sneeze; “Tour Du Nose” takes guests on a tour through a nose replica – standing at 10-feet-tall; “Burp Man,” a larger than life cartoon character, who drinks from a three-foot-tall soda can pumped by visitors, details the cause of burps; and “Click Ick” allows visitors an opportunity to play nine different activities, including exploratory labs, puzzles, games and more. As visitors wind their way through 5,000-square-feet of human science, they will also learn about skin issues, “gas attacks” and vomit.

Grossology is based on the best-selling book by science teacher Sylvia Branzei. The colorful exhibit incorporates sophisticated animatronics and imaginative exhibits to actively engage visitors. Learning is achieved through the use of interactive experiences, challenges and just plain fun. Grossology was developed by Advanced Exhibits in collaboration with Science World British Columbia. Grossology will run through October 10, 2016.

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is located at 4801 Dreher Trail North in West Palm Beach and is open Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Admission to the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium during Grossology is $15 for adults, $11 for children ages 3 to 12 and $13 for seniors aged 60 and older. Science Center members and children under 3 are free. Planetarium shows are not included in general admission pricing. The Science Center is home to the only planetarium in Palm Beach County, which recently went through a major modern-day technology upgrade to feature the latest in quality advancements. The upgrade was courtesy of a $250,000 gift from the Marvin and Elsie Dekelboum Foundation.

For more information about Grossology, or other Science Center programming, please call 561-832-1988 or visit www.sfsciencecenter.org. Like the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium on Facebook and follow them on Twitter and Instagram @SFScienceCenter.
