Seagull Services Lunch at Café Boulud

On Wednesday, March 9 Seagull Services held a fundraising luncheon at Café Boulud in Palm Beach. Seagull Services is beginning its 35th year assisting people to live with dignity and realize their life potential through education, training, employment, residences, transportation and support service. Their mission is to help unemployed workers with barriers to employment and adults and students with disabilities to find success and fulfillment.

The setting for the luncheon could not have been more beautiful. As you enter the Brazilian Court Hotel you face the courtyard gardens. If you walk a few steps to your left you are in the intimate dining room of Chef Daniel Boulud’s jewel of a restaurant Café Boulud. And a from that you enter the ballroom where the luncheon was held. Just about filled to capacity the ballroom is still elegant and cozy.

The anteroom was filled with arriving guests who mingled and bid on a fabulous array of Silent Auction items. And raffle tickets were being sold for even more great items. As we all entered the ballroom the tables were set with our Caesar Salads of hearts of Romaine, marinated avocado, herbed croutons, parmesan tuile and black pepper vinaigrette. We were graciously welcomed by Seagull Services President and CEO Barbara Nuremberg. There were also a few brief words from the event sponsors and by that time our second course was served.

The entrée was a gorgeous and delicious plate of Scottish Salmon with carrots, endive, and tangerine emulsion. The salmon was buttery and delectable but I would expect nothing less of Chef Boulud!

For our entertainment we had a delightful demonstration by Pastry Chef Alexander McKinstry. As an American growing up in a military family, Alex spent his youth traveling the globe. This helped him develop an appreciation for different cultures and a passion for cooking. He discovered his adoration for culinary arts in Tokyo and returned to the states to  pursue his love at the Culinary Institute of America, receiving a degree in Baking and Pastry.

Alex began his professional culinary career in New York City at Payard Patisserie, where he trained for six months in order to fully learn the haute cuisine pastry world. Following that he honed his skills at Tabla, Le Bernadin and 10Arts before bringing his skills to the Ritz-Carlton in Palm Beach where he garnered the experience in large-scale banquets and leading a team. Following this he joined the team at Café Boulud Palm Beach as the Pastry Sous Chef under Arnaud Chavigny. After stints in Hong Kong, Singapore and Melbourne, Australia, Alex is back here and thrilled to return to Café Boulud in Palm Beach as Pastry Chef!

Chef Alex demonstrated how to make all of the components of our artfully plated dessert Banoffee Pie which consisted of Chocolate rice pudding, banana bread and coffee ice cream. A perfect ending to a fantastic luncheon.

Entitled “The Colors of Music,” the concert promises to be especially engaging, as this performance features conductor Lorraine Marks-Field’s young students from the Childrens’ House of Boca Raton Montessori Schools participating in a special arrangement of “Sing a Rainbow” and “The Colors of My Life.” This special work will be sung by “The Skipper” and children from the school, ages 3 to 6. It was arranged by the world-renowned musical arranger, Hector Garrido, especially for this concert. Mr. Garrido has arranged for Gloria Estefan, The Miami Sound Machine, and numerous other celebrities. The concert will be filled with other colorful music such as Over the Rainbow, Blue Moon, Blue Tango, Blue Danube. Also featured will be vocalist Vince Zabik singing in his own engaging style, which is usually full of surprises.

This remarkable orchestra comprised of musicians spanning the ages of 9-96 has delighted local audiences for more than eleven years. The gifted conductor, Lorraine Marks-Field, semi-finalist this year for the American Prize in conducting a Community Orchestra, deftly blends the different abilities of the members of the orchestra. (The American Prize in Conducting recognizes and rewards the best orchestral, choral, band/wind ensemble, opera and musical theater conductors in America in 2016.)

Florida Intergenerational Orchestra concerts are engaging and fun for the whole family; everyone leaves with a smile and has a great time.

Mikala Gundersen Wins Second People’s Choice Award Presented by Ann Cook Properties at Palm Beach Derby CDI-W

Mikala Gundersen Wins Second People’s Choice Award Presented by Ann Cook Properties at Palm Beach Derby CDI-W

Mikala-Ann

Wellington, FL (March 6, 2016)  At the Palm Beach Derby CDI-W, Mikala Gundersen became the first person ever to win a second People’s Choice Award presented by Ann Cook Properties. Gundersen is a beloved competitor at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida, known as a great supporter of the sport and her fellow equestrians. With My Lady, Gundersen has been showing a fan favorite freestyle featuring music from the movie Burlesque.

For her exceptional results, incredible horsemanship, and outstanding sportsmanship, Gundersen was again named the People’s Choice Award winner presented by Ann Cook Properties. Ann-Louise Cook is a successful dressage rider and realtor at Illustrated Properties (a company specializing in equestrian and luxury real estate sales). Cook established the People’s Choice Award as a way to give back to her equestrian community.

Cook explained to Gundersen that the People’s Choice Award recognizes top riders who serve as an example and inspiration to amateurs in the sport. She commented, “You always look so elegant in person as well as on the horse.” In accepting the award, Gundersen graciously remarked, “I want to thank you so much for the award. It is, for me, very close to my heart and it is a very big award for me to win.”

Gundersen is based in Florida, but rides for her native country of Denmark. This season, she is fighting for an individual place at the Olympic Games on behalf of Denmark. Based on her scores this season, it is expected to be announced soon that she has earned that position. However, earning the start for Denmark does not guarantee Gundersen will be selected to compete in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

Gundersen and My Lady have again qualified for the Reem Acra FEI World Cup Finals which will be held later this month in Sweden. However, Gundersen has decided not to put her partner through the stress of an additional transatlantic trip, opting to focus on preparing for the Olympic Games instead. She and My Lady will travel to Europe this summer to vie for a position on the Danish Olympic Team.

My Lady and Gundersen have made a convincing case in their campaign for Olympic glory. Together, they have earned many top placings at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival, including a win at the CDI 5* in Week 5 – the biggest week of competition at the popular show circuit. This past week, Gundersen and My Lady once again proved their mettle at the Palm Beach Derby CDI –W, finishing second in both the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Freestyle.

The Palm Beach Derby holds special meaning for the duo as it was founded in part by My Lady’s owner Janne Rumbough more than thirty years ago. “I could not have done this without her and her continuous support,” Gundersen said of Rumbough. Rumbough followed, “We couldn’t do it without each other!”
