January, 2016 – A Mom’s Advice for the New Year

A Mom’s Advice for the New Year

By Pam Kresse

So I was struggling to write an article about how to make our children be more respectful of adults in this age of technology.  I was trying to figure out how to make them look up from their cell phones and actually answer questions and have conversations again.  And to be honest, I didn’t figure this one out yet.  It’s just a whole new world – sometimes a dangerous one and sometimes an annoying one when children have all the information and entertainment in the world at their fingertips.  So I (Krista Martinelli) was lucky enough to stumble on some words of wisdom from my friend and neighbor Pam.  She shared this advice and I found it to be very helpful.  I hope you do too!

In hopes for a sweet 2016, here is my version of how I try to manage my world today and advice for my teenage girls I dish out regularly. (Mommy-isms).

Be kind and brave – always. It’s a line from Cinderella; afterall we all have inner royalty.

Be loyal and trustworthy – always. But this should never translate into being a doormat. Anyone who betrays this has given us a gift of wise advice: Run far away.

Stay away from people who are pretenders and takers. They have their own agendas and making you feel good is not on the list.

Narcissists only have room for themselves and are quite pleased with their own companionship. Don’t choose them as a friend or lover. For it will be too crowded in any room with them.

Even if you are having a crappy day, smile. After all, you are living and breathing; sad/bad thoughts take away time from happy/good thoughts.

Believe in something. When considering how vast our universe is, we are all unique miracles. I am convinced we are not here by chance.

True friends show up in times of difficulty, not necessarily when things are easy.

Always choose quality over quantity in all you do whether it is selecting fruit, new clothes or friendships.

Listen with your ears, not your mouth.

The truth is the simplest answer and will always reveal itself over time. Lies only cause pain.

Love and self-respect are what make us different from animals. Nurture it always.

A handwritten note in the mail is much sweeter than a text or email.

The art of conversation will become extinct if we don’t make an effort to show our kids how discussions really take place in a healthy manner.

The only place crap belongs is in the toilet.

Many teenaged arguments with mom can be resolved by just making your bed. Try your best to do the small things in making someone happy.

When my kids smile, my heart skips a beat.

Enjoy the time in the car with your kids. This is when you can have each other’s undivided attention. Soon enough they will be driving without you and you will miss this time together.

Lastly, you will have times in your life when the only one you can count on is yourself, so be kind and gentle to yourself – always.

Have a happy and healthy New Year everyone!

(West Palm Beach, FL) – Florida is one of just seven states that includes Holocaust education in its state standards, and recently more than 1,500 Palm Beach County students in grades 7-12 attended the ballet LIGHT/ The Holocaust & Humanity Project, in support of educators’ efforts to enhance understanding of human rights. The special performance, held at the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, was the result of a partnership between the Kravis Center and inSIGHT Through Education, Inc.

LIGHT/ The Holocaust & Humanity Project explores the devastating outcomes of unlearned lessons revealed through the story of a Holocaust survivor. The internationally acclaimed dance work by Ballet Austin’s Artistic Director/Choreographer Stephen Mills, which debuted 10 years ago, brings heartbreaking beauty to the stage and a timely reminder that injustice to one is injustice to all. The full-length contemporary ballet is a multidisciplinary human rights project that also includes art, education and public dialogue. LIGHT seeks to promote discussion against bigotry, hate and bullying among all community groups.

Mills, inspired by the true life story of Holocaust survivor Naomi Warren, created LIGHT as an artistic response to 9/11 and the idea of individual response to social injustices throughout the world. As he discusses in Ballet Austin’s Footnotes educational materials, “My hope is that this (ballet) sparks your interest, which in turn starts a conversation. People engaging in dialogue begin the process of positive change.”

As part of the program, Mills conducted a Master Class with ballet students at the Dreyfoos School of the Arts the day before LIGHT debuted at the Kravis Center, critiquing their technique and providing instruction. This was a special opportunity for local students studying the performing arts to train with a world-class artistic director and choreographer.

Centrally located in West Palm Beach, the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts is one of the premier performing arts centers in the Southeast with a renowned national and international reputation. Established as a leading force in the social fabric of the community, its many outreach programs are as broad and varied as the community itself. To date, the Center has opened the door to the performing arts for approximately 2 million school children. Please see the Kravis Center’s 2015-2016 education brochure by visiting: http://www.kravis.org/educationbrochure. January, 2015- Wellington Seeks Volunteers for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Service Project

Wellington’s Community Services Department is looking for youth volunteers to participate in a service project for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 18, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Volunteers will have an opportunity to earn community service hours by beautifying the Wellington Dog Park through painting the restrooms and spreading mulch. Space is limited, so be sure to reserve your spot early by contacting Meridith Tuckwood at 561-753-2476 or mtuckwood@wellingtonfl.gov.

In 2015, residents across all 50 states delivered meals, refurbished schools and community centers, and collected food and clothing. Volunteers also recruited mentors, supported job-seekers, built homes, provided other services for veterans and military families, and helped residents improve their financial literacy skills.

Last year, the MLK Day of Service inspired hundreds of thousands of Americans to come together to make 2015 a Year of Citizen Action, and we hope to inspire our youth to continue to serve their community in 2016.
