January, 2016- South Florida Fair announces 2016 entertainment lineup
West Palm Beach, Fla. –– The 2016 edition of the South Florida Fair, which will be held Jan. 15-31 at the South Florida Fairgrounds, 9067 Southern Blvd., West Palm Beach, will host a variety of music from country and Christian rock to alternative and classic rock. The classic rock bands are Starship featuring Mickey Thomas, The Guess Who, The Grass Roots and The Buckinghams. The national country acts are Emerson Drive and The Brothers Osborne, the alternative rock band is Hoobastank and the Christian group is Tenth Avenue North. In addition, The Rat Pack Now will feature impersonators Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin.
Tenth Avenue North will kick off the national entertainment schedule at 8 p.m. on Sun., Jan. 17. The group, which formed while in college in West Palm Beach and made its national debut in 2008, won the Gospel Music Association Dove Award in 2009 for New Artist of the Year and in 2010, “By Your Side” was named Song of the Year. They recently released their fourth studio album, “Cathedrals.”
The versatile L.A. band, Hoobastank, will perform at 8 p.m. on Tues., Jan. 19. The band’s “Fight or Flight” album marks the beginning of an important new chapter in the nearly two-decade run. Described as musically and emotionally intense work, the LP is Hoobastank’s initial release on their own Open E Entertainment label following a productive decade on Island Records during which they ruled the modern rock charts, sold 10 million albums and crossed over with the iconic smash “The Reason.”
Next up, at 8 p.m. on Wed., Jan. 20, Emerson Drive will perform. This Grammy-nominated country band has a decade of music and more than a million miles of life on the road behind them as they look to a bright future. The band has been a part of the country music scene since they signed their first record deal with DreamWorks Records Nashville in 2001. The Decade & Driving Tour celebrates the 10 years of music that began with their debut single, “I Should Be Sleeping,” and continues today with their most recent single release, “Let Your Love Speak.”
Starting at 8 p.m. on Thurs., Jan 21, the first of two Bike Nights, The Guess Who takes the stage, a group that’s connected with a hit parade spanning 14 Top 40 hits, including “These Eyes,” “Clap For the Wolfman,” “Hand Me Down World” and “Share the Land,” as well as fellow classics and double sided singles like their #1 rock anthem, “American Woman” and “No Sugar Tonight,” plus “Laughing” and “Undun.”
At 1 p.m. on Mon., Jan. 25, “The Rat Pack Now” will feature impersonators Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin. Then at 7:30 p.m. on Tues., Jan. 26, The Buckinghams, one of the most beloved and respected Chicago bands to burst onto the national scene, will entertain guests with familiar pop rock tunes from the 60s and 70s. Since 1985, original Buckinghams Carl Giammarese and Nick Fortuna and their band have continued to deliver fast-paced, solid shows that bring crowds to their feet to dance along. Their #1 song, “Kind of a Drag” is a standout favorite that first made them famous. Next came seven national chart hits, 15 singles, and 8 acclaimed albums. The Grass Roots, one of pop music’s most memorable bands, will follow their concert. The band set a record between 1967 and 1972 by being on the Billboard charts an unbelievable 307 straight weeks and they hold the all-time record for a one act, US concert, by performing for 600,000 people on July 4,1982 in Washington, DC.
At 8 p.m. on Wed., Jan. 27, the stage sounds will return to country with The Brothers Osborne. Two sons from a working class family, John and T.J. Osborne form a twang-and-crunch duo that blends equal parts country and rock into one of the freshest, most identifiable sounds to come out of Nashville in recent years. Their debut album, “Pawn Shop,” will be released on the fair’s first day and features their current Top 15 single, “Stay A Little Longer,” which has already garnered over 19 million total streams.
The main stage lineup will conclude with the fair’s second Bike Night at 8 p.m. on Thurs., Jan. 28, with Starship featuring Mickey Thomas, the venerable San Francisco band behind several of the 20th century’s biggest pop and rock anthems—“We Built This City,” “Sara,” and “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now.” The band’s new album, “Loveless Fascination,” is the group’s first studio record in more than 20 years. The band has one of the most storied histories in rock ’n’roll. While forming as Jefferson Airplane in the 1960s, the current incarnation of what is now Starship began in 1979 when Thomas joined Paul Kanter to resurrect JA’s follow-up group, Jefferson Starship.
General seating is free with a Fair admission ticket (which is required). Reserved seating is also available for purchase online atwww.southfloridafair.com for $10 for all concerts, which is in addition to the Fair admission ticket. December, 2015 – Happy Holidays!
December, 2015 – Happy Holidays and Happy Peak Season!
It’s a great time of year in Florida, especially in Wellington as the season begins. Holiday season, equestrian season, peak season – all of these things.
I’ll keep this letter short, as everyone seems to have too much to do in December anyway – and probably less time for reading or relaxing.
Welcome to our new writers Angela Shaw (who will write Cultural Corner every other month and also wrote our Poem of the Month this month) and Sandy Axelrod, who takes over as our food reviewer as “Saucy Sarah” has moved to the west coast of Florida. Sandy’s monthly article will be called “The Discerning Palate.” Looking forward to more great articles from both of these talented women!
Welcome also to our new advertisers the Kids Wonder Lab, Cricket Cleaners and ITEX! Check out our “AW Spotlight” story this month about the Kids Wonder Lab, located at Lantana and 441 (in the space where the former Lab was located). Read the story and find out what’s new at the Kids Wonder Lab, including robotics, building circuits, coding and much more! #WonderWhy #KidsWonderLab
Somehow in the madness of all the shopping, baking, holiday card sending and parties, I hope you find a few moments of peaceful quiet for yourself to reflect on the past year and look forward to 2016.
Just click around on AroundWellington.com to find the latest articles, posted by our wonderful new Managing Editor Sabeen. I hope you enjoy our content! Gala supporters will enjoy reception and trends from elite designer Naeem Khan
(PALM BEACH, Fla.) Neiman Marcus Palm Beach, a longtime sponsor of the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts’ annual Gala, will host a designer kickoff reception on Wednesday, January 13 in honor of the 2016 benefit, its leadership and its supporters. The special invite-only fashion show will feature current designs by world-renowned designer Naeem Khan.
The Kravis Center’s Gala will be chaired by the mother-daughter team of Dorothy Kohl and Lori Gendelman, both of Palm Beach.
“We are very grateful to partner with Neiman Marcus Palm Beach and Beth Pine, their Vice President General Manager again this year,” said Mrs. Gendelman. “Their sponsorship and support continue to have a meaningful impact on the Kravis Center’s annual Gala, which raises funds for performing arts programming in our local community. And we are especially excited to see current fashions by famed designer Naeem Khan. His line is consistently beautiful, featuring flattering silhouettes and bright patterns. Hosting the kickoff with a designer showcase at Neiman Marcus is the perfect opportunity to thank the Gala supporters and get them excited about the Gala!”
Grammy award-winning solo artist Patti LaBelle, fondly referred to as the “Godmother of Soul,” will take the stage for a spectacular performance when the Kravis Center holds its annual Gala on Wednesday, February 3, 2016. LaBelle’s effortless ability to belt out rhythm and blues renditions, pop standards and spiritual sonnets has fueled her popularity for more than 50 years. The Philadelphia-born star entered the pop charts in 1962 as lead singer of The Bluebelles and went on to receive worldwide acclaim with the trio, Labelle. An award-winning solo artist since the ‘70s, the soulful singer’s classics include “On My Own,” “New Attitude,” “Lady Marmalade” and “If You Asked Me To.”
“The Gala is an extraordinary evening on the town – with a performance, dinner and dancing – and has earned the enviable reputation as a gala where guests of all ages are guaranteed to have a very memorable evening,” said Mrs. Kohl. “We encourage supporters to buy their tickets early, as the Gala is always a sold-out success!”
Monika Preston and Kathryn Vecellio are serving as Honorary Chairs. Gala committee members are Eileen Berman, Michael J. Bracci, Robert L. Fromer, Irene Karp, John H. Kessler, David S. Mack, Ted Mandes, William A. Meyer, Jane M. Mitchell, Laurie S. Silvers, Jeffrey A. Stoops, and Dom A. Telesco.
Gala sponsors include: Dr. Nettie Birnbach, The Breakers Palm Beach, Alex and Renate Dreyfoos, Sanford and Isanne Fisher, Alec and Miriam Flamm, Lori and Bruce Gendelman, Diane and Bruce Halle, Harless & Associates, JPMorgan Chase & Co., Henni and John Kessler, Dorothy and Sidney Kohl, Ingrid and David Kosowsky, Sondra and David S. Mack, Jocelyn and Robin Martin, Jack and Goldie Wolfe Miller Fund, Jane M. Mitchell, Neiman Marcus Palm Beach, Monika and John Preston, SBA Communications Corporation, Laurie Silvers and Mitchell Rubenstein, Carolyn and Richard Sloane, Susan and Dom Telesco, Kathryn and Leo Vecellio and Lois Silverman Yashar and Dr. James Yashar. Tiffany & Co. is providing special support and media support is being provided by Palm Beach Illustrated.
Ticket sales and rental revenue alone do not cover the cost of operating a not-for-profit facility like the Kravis Center. It is only through generous contributions and benefit events like the Gala that the Kravis Center continues to succeed in making the best of performing arts available to the entire community.
Centrally located in West Palm Beach, the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts is one of the premier performing arts centers in the Southeast with a national and international reputation. Established as a leading force in the social fabric of the community, its many outreach programs are as broad and varied as the community itself. To date, the Center has opened the door to the performing arts for approximately 2 million school children.
Tickets for this year’s Gala are $750 for the Gala Patron and $375 for the Young Gala Patron (45 and younger). Dress is cocktail attire. For more information or to purchase tickets please visit kravis.org/gala or call (561) 651-4320.
December, 2105-SCIENCE CENTER SEES SNOW IN FORECAST
DECEMBER, 2015- SCIENCE CENTER SEES SNOW IN FORECAST
Seasonal line up promises snow and other seasonally-themed activities, camps and special events
(West Palm Beach, Fla.) Leadership at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium knows steamy temps won’t ruin their winter wonder, as science is on their side. Using chemical reactions, the education team has created a lineup of seasonal offerings, including “Make-N-Take Snow” and “Grow Crystals” to keep elves of all ages merry this month and through January 4. Offerings include special weekend events, holiday camps during school closures and “Noon Year’s Eve,” so even small celebrators can get in on the fun.
“Families don’t need to travel too far this season to experience snow and all of the wonders of winter,” said Science Center CEO Lew Crampton. “The Science Center is a constant hub of informal science education and themed events during the holidays, keeping small scientists engaged and excited. In addition to snowfall in our forecast, guests can also visit with a paleontologist on select weekends, which is a thrilling complement to our current blockbuster exhibition, Dinosaurs Around the World. ‘Tis the Season for Science!”
Dinosaurs Around the World invites guests to travel back to an age when dinosaurs ruled the planet – no time machine required. In addition to the pack of more than a dozen animatronic dinosaurs that are on display like a prehistoric zoo, the exhibit also features a multi-layered narrative, fossils, authentic casts, cutting-edge research and immersive design elements. The resulting story is a clearly painted picture about the prehistoric planet and its early inhabitants.
Holiday activities include a daily showing of Let it Snow planetarium show at 3 p.m., along with a variety of hands-on crafts and activities on the weekends and during school closures. Freezing fun includes growing crystals, crafting geometric snowflakes and watching snow form during the Make-N-Take Snow activity.** For young Einsteins ages 4 – 14 looking to stay and play all day, the Science Center’s “Winter Wonder Science and Tech Adventures” is available on December 21 – 23, December 28 – 30 and as a one-day camp on Monday, January 4, 2016.*
Admission to the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, which includes Dinosaurs Around the World and the Science Center’s permanent exhibits, is $16.95 for adults, $12.95 for children aged 3 to 12, $14.95 for seniors aged 60 and older. Science Center members and children under 3 are free. Planetarium shows and miniature golf are not included in general admission pricing. The Science Center is home to the only planetarium in Palm Beach County, which recently went through a major modern-day technology upgrade to feature the latest in quality advancements. The upgrade was courtesy of a $250,000 gift from the Marvin and Elsie Dekelboum Foundation.
The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is located at 4801 Dreher Trail North, West Palm Beach and is open Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. For more information about the Science Center’s seasonal offerings, please call 561-832-1988 or visit www.sfsciencecenter.org.
