Wellington Village Councilwoman Anne Gerwig has filed to run for Mayor. Gerwig, served on the Village Council since 2010, is challenging Mayor Bob Margolis. Gerwig currently serves as a member of the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council, the Palm Beach County League of Cities Education Committee, the Palm Beach County Citizens Advisory Council on Health and Human Services, the Housing Leadership Council of Palm Beach County and the Wellington Landings Middle School Student Advisory Committee (SAC). Gerwig also serves as an Alternate Member of the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO).
Gerwig is a member of the Central Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce and the Wellington Chamber of Commerce.
Gerwig is a former board member of the Binks Forest Elementary School PTA and a former business partner of the Binks Forest Elementary School Advisory Council. Gerwig served as a community build volunteer for the Tiger Shark Cove and Scott’s Place Playgrounds. Gerwig is also the former Area Coordinator for the MOMS Club of Wellington, Southeastern Florida District.
Gerwig is a 47 year resident of Palm Beach County and a 25 year resident of Wellington. She and her husband, Alan, have three children, Jessica, Dane and Luke.

“I am running for Mayor because I want to bring civility and thoughtful decision making back to our council. Wellington is a world class community and deserves leadership that listens to our community, is responsive and works for the best interests of all our residents, said Gerwig.”

Adult-themed food, wine and cocktail event serves up education shaken, stirred and poured

(West Palm Beach, Fla.) As a chaser to last year’s inaugural MolecuBar, leadership at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is preparing for the 2nd Annual MolecuBar. The adult-only event includes creative concoctions and lite bites, all in the name of science education. A peek behind the pour will educate visitors about molecular mixology, exploring concepts such as suspension, viscosity, emulsion and dispersion. On Thursday, November 19 from 6 – 9 p.m., sips are included with science admission.

“As part of our mission to ‘open every mind to science’ we are always seeking new and fun opportunities to engage and educate people of all ages and interests,” said Lew Crampton, Science Center CEO. “MolecuBar was a great success last year – attracting new faces to the Science Center – and we look forward to expanding our reach within the community by growing upon our MolecuBar momentum.”

As a nod to the Science Center’s new traveling exhibit, Dinosaurs Around the World, the signature drink for the evening is a “Green Dinosaur,” courtesy of Blue Martini CityPlace and Tito’s Handmade Vodka. The dino-colored drink is a sweet treat served stirred. In addition to libations, activities include: beer brewing demonstrations, Kahlua karaoke sessions, liquid density brain hemorrhage shots, tequila jalapenos, gin and tonic glow, burning isopropyl, liquid nitrogen merlot ice cream and more. Guests will also have full access to Dinosaurs Around the World and the Science Center’s observatory (weather permitting).

Dinosaurs Around the World invites guests to travel back to an age when dinosaurs ruled the planet – no time machine required. In addition to a pack of more than a dozen animatronic dinosaurs that are on display like a prehistoric zoo, the exhibit also features a multi-layered narrative, fossils, authentic casts, cutting-edge research and immersive design elements. The resulting story is a clearly painted picture about the prehistoric planet and its early inhabitants.

(West Palm Beach, FL – August 10, 2015)  The Friends of Mounts Botanical Garden today announced that Palm Beach County’s oldest and largest botanical garden would be opening the largest exhibition in its 30-year history:

 

NATURE CONNECTS
Art with LEGO® Bricks
 
Opening on Saturday, November 14, and running through mid-February, this dazzling, family-friendly exhibition has been a smash hit in every city in which it been presented. “LEGO exhibit connects humans with nature, learning with play,” headlined The San Antonio Express-News.

 

This new NATURE CONNECTS exhibit is making its Florida debut at Mounts and will feature 15 super-sized structures in 13 different displays made out of nearly a half-million LEGOs. Among the garden-themed items on display will be a birdbath with squirrel, Bonsai tree, girl with watering can, Monarch butterfly, corn spider, deer family, dragonfly, flowers, hummingbird, peacock, sea turtle, wheelbarrow and more.
The admission cost to attend the NATURE CONNECTS exhibit is only $10 for adults; $7 for seniors (65+), veterans and students (with valid IDs); $5 for children (3-12); and always FREE for Mounts members and children 2 and under. Individual Garden Tours led by a trained Master Gardener Docent is only $15. In addition, a variety of LEGO-themed collectibles will be available for purchase in the Mounts Gift Shop.

Children and teens from Palm Beach County are invited to create an original garden-themed holiday ornament made out of LEGOs, such as a flower, plant, insect, animal or gardening tool. The submitted ornaments can be dropped off at either the office or Gift Shop at Mounts Botanical Garden between October 1 and November 25, 2015.
The top 25 submitted ornaments, as determined by a special committee of Mounts supporters and staff, will be displayed at the Garden throughout the holiday season. The creator of the top ornament, as selected by the committee, will win a $500 mini-vacation at Crane’s Beach House Boutique Hotel & Luxury Villas in Delray Beach, including a $100 gift certificate for lunch or dinner at the nearby oceanfront restaurant Caffe Luna Rosa.
The five runners-up will all receive a free one-year Family & Friends membership at Mounts (value; $75 each).
The 25 finalists will be invited to hang their Connecting With Nature holiday ornaments at a special public event on Saturday, December 5, at 10 am at Mounts Botanical Garden.
LEGO Robotics with 4-H
On Monday, December 21, from 10 am to noon, students from Palm Beach County schools will provide a live demonstration and presentation on LEGO Robotics. Through this program, young people will develop knowledge and skills geared toward STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics), while exploring real world applications of technology.

 

Co-sponsored and in collaboration with the 4-H Robotics Program, this fun and informative workshop for designers and LEGO enthusiasts of all ages will be held in Exhibit Hall A at Mounts. The cost to attend is only $15 for Mounts members, $25 for nonmembers.

Wellington residents PJ Rizvi, Visse Wedell and Penny Bradley to chair event to support LLS’ efforts to find a cure.

(WELLINGTON, FL. November 9, 2015) – The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is proud to announce that PJ Rizvi, Penny Bradley, and Visse Wedell, all Wellington residents, will co-chair the Third Annual Polo for a Purpose, and survivor Brandon Phillips, also a resident of Wellington, will serve as Honorary Chairman. The event will take place on Monday, January 18, 2016, at the International Polo Club, 3667 120th Avenue South in Wellington, FL 33414.

“Polo for a Purpose promises to be a signature event with talented and dedicated people at the helm,” said Pamela Payne, LLS Executive Director. “We are privileged that they have chosen to accept this leadership position and support the lifesaving mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.”

In addition to being the mother of four children with her husband Suhail, Co-Chair Rizvi is an accomplished, award-winning Grand Prix Dressage rider, both domestically and internationally. She began riding in 1992 as a form of emotional therapy, after losing her beloved sister, Penny, to a blood cancer. She began competing in her thirties and has since taken over the reins to fulfill her lifelong dream of riding her first Grand Prix. In Saugerties, NY, she won the East Coast Riders Cup FEI Grand Prix, and then continued her winning streak in Florida.

Co-Chair Bradley, an entrepreneur and real estate developer, spent her early life in Yorkshire, North England. A former corporate banker in London, Bradley earned her undergraduate degree in Banking and Finance from the Institute of Bankers. She moved to New York in 1997 as a member of the credit team with Coutts and Co., a British private bank. She obtained her Masters degree in Business from Columbia University and opened her real estate development business in 2000, purchasing townhouses and developing them into luxury single-family homes. She is often called upon to consult for banks and real estate professionals.

Co-Chair Wedell, a realtor associate, has immersed herself in knowing every detail of the real estate transaction, bolstered by her passion for building and creating beautiful spaces of her own. This combination of experience and professionalism gives her a one of a kind approach to her business that easily fits with any client’s needs. Her passion for construction and development, especially in the areas of estate and farm homes and properties, has led Wedell to become a well-rounded agent with unparalleled knowledge.

During his almost 20 years as a professional polo player and 5-goal handicap, Honorary Chairman, Phillips, has captured some of the sport’s most coveted trophies. Even though he has realized his dream to play at the top of his sport, he credits surviving Stage Four lymphoma as his greatest accomplishment. Diagnosed at 14 years old, Phillips was initially given six weeks to live. He endured five grueling months of intensive chemotherapy sessions, beat the odds and went into remission. Once recovered, he vowed to dedicate his life to doing what he loved – playing polo. Since then, Phillips has established himself as one of the world’s most talented polo players.

All proceeds from the Third Annual Polo with a Purpose will benefit LLS’s mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. While this event will raise funds for lifesaving blood cancer research, it will also help support our local patients and their families by providing critically-needed financial aid.

The Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge) is excited to announce that it will be offering a speaker series on select Thursdays throughout the winter season starting November 19th, 2015. Topics for this speaker series will revolve around the Everglades ecosystem and speakers will be leading experts in Everglades research, education and management. Lectures will take place in the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee NWR Visitor Center Theater at 1:30 PM and are open to the public. Funds raised at Science Center’s annual golf tournament go toward $250,000 challenge grant

(West Palm Beach, Fla.) According to leadership at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, the nonprofit’s 4th annual Conservation Cup was a swinging success! A full field of golfers teed off on Monday, October 26 in the name of science education. The tournament took place at Mayacoo Lakes, and included a luncheon, silent auction and awards presentation. Funds raised are earmarked to support improvements to the Center’s science trail and new Conservation Course.

“We are incredibly appreciative of our Conservation Cup chairman Heath Randolph and his entire committee,” said Lew Crampton, Science Center CEO. “Their leadership has helped raise funds toward meeting a $250,000 challenge grant from The Batchelor Foundation for the development of our Florida Forever Science Trail and the installation of our new Conservation Course. We have until July 2016 to raise the matching funds, which will all go toward our continued expansion and improvement plans.”

The Science Center’s Conservation Course, a new 18-hole miniature golf course, is a collaboration between Jim Fazio and Gary Nicklaus, sons of two of the most well-known design icons in the golf community. The Science Center is scheduled to break ground for the project in 2016. The course will educate visitors and locals alike about natural Florida habitats, especially the Everglades. Each hole represents a naming opportunity and will include plaques explaining plants and animals indigenous to South Florida. Sponsorships of the science trail and the Conservation Course are available at all levels.

The Science Center’s fall blockbuster exhibition, Dinosaurs Around the World, is currently on display and features more than a dozen life-size and life-like animatronic dinosaurs. All exhibits will be on display during Dinosaurs Around the World’s special showing, which runs through April 16, 2016.

November 12, 2015: “Water Management and Sea Level Rise: Impacts and Adaptation” by Dr. Jayantha Obeysekera –The evening will focus on the threat of sea level rise in Florida neighborhoods, its impact on our native species and what is being done to address this looming crisis. Guests are invited to enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and Zoo animal encounters in the Tropics Cafe from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. before the lecture presentation. To purchase your tickets online, visit www.palmbeachzoo.org.

 

Kids Day Off Discount: November 16 (embargo until November 15) – It’s a teacher work day which means no school, and that’s a perfect excuse to come see what’s new at the zoo! Story Time at the Zoo is geared towards encouraging children to connect with wildlife through reading. Story Time is included in the cost of Zoo admission.

 

One, Two, at the Zoo Toddler Workshop (3-4 Year Olds): November 21, 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.  

We have two feet, but some animals have more and some less. Practice your numbers as we meet animals with different numbers of legs! Age-specific crafts and activities are designed to excite and intrigue your child. Workshops include up-close animal encounters, stories, song or game, crafts, and admission to the zoo. Workshops for 3 and 4 year olds include a snack. One adult is required to attend the program with children. Pre-registration is required.

 

“Fiesta Cultural” Celebrating Hispanic Heritage: November 22, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. – Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society is proud to present this exciting multi-cultural event! Bring your appetite because our Tropics Café is whipping up a special menu of delicious Hispanic and Latin American cuisines. Other event highlights include a live band/DJ, children’s art activities and lots of family-friendly fun! Regular Zoo admission prices apply during the day.

 

Group Overnights: Scouts, Community Groups & Birthday Parties – NEW this fall: choose your theme for your overnight adventure! Baby Goeldi’s Monkey: New at the Zoo — Have you seen our new baby Goeldi’s monkey on exhibit? The baby monkey can be seen during regular hours, at exhibit #27 on the Palm Beach Zoo map. Goeldi’s monkeys are facing human-induced habitat loss and degradation from logging, farming, oil production and harvesting. One way you can help preserve their habitat is to purchase Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) paper, which was produced using trees that are managed in a sustainable way, preventing mass deforestation.

Kookaburra Exhibit: An Unforgettable Experience –That’s not laughter you hear, that is the Kookaburra welcoming you to Palm Beach Zoo! Known for having one of the most distinct bird calls in the world, the Kookaburra is a huge hit with zoo visitors. As for their loud and infamous ‘koo-koo-koo-koo-koo-kaa-kaa-kaa’ cackle, that is a territorial call to warn other birds to stay away.

Wellington is excited to announce the re-opening of the Green Market at Wellington on Saturday, November 14th at 9:00am, next to the Wellington Amphitheater at 12100 Forest Hill Blvd. Shop for fresh produce, baked goods, and unique wares – many of which are harvested or handcrafted by local farmers and artisans. The Market features a shaded sitting area, lush green space, restrooms, and Scott’s Place; a barrier-free playground designed to meet the needs of all children.

Visitors can relax and spend time with family and friends while supporting the community by shopping local. The Market features a wide selection of produce, ranging from fruits and vegetables to everyday favorites like homemade salsa, baked goods, and local honey. Visitors will find a unique selection of artists and crafters selling jewelry and handicrafts.

The grand opening weekend will feature live music performed by Davee Bryan. A face painter and balloon artist will also be on hand for the kids.

Donors indulge in sweet sampling before “So You Think You Can Dance” show

(WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.) Nearly 200 Kravis Center Annual Friend Members raised their mint chocolate milkshake shots in support of the exciting 2015-2016 season at the Center’s Annual Dessert Reception. Held just prior to the evening’s performance of So You Think You Can Dance, the reception was full of families and delectable confections.  The event was sponsored by Bank of America and offered Kravis Center leadership an opportunity to thank Annual Friend level donors for their ongoing support of the Kravis Center.

“Tonight’s reception is a celebration of your continued commitment to the Kravis Center,” said Judith Mitchell, Kravis Center CEO.  “As a donor, one of your benefits is the opportunity to order performance tickets prior to the general public, but more than that, you can take great pride in knowing that your contribution supports the Center’s nationally acclaimed arts education and outreach programs.  In fact, nearly 60,000 children attended numerous performances through the Kravis Center’s S*T*A*R Series last season.  We applaud you for helping us fulfill our mission and we look forward to another star-studded season with you!”

Kravis Center Annual Friend Members contribute a yearly gift of $100 or more and also receive priority access to Kravis On Broadway and Regional Arts Concert Series, subscriptions to Kravis Center publications, as well as a special memento of the season and an invitation to the Annual Friend Members Dessert Reception.

“We are most grateful to Bank of America for sponsoring our Annual Friends’ reception for the fifth consecutive year,” continued Ms. Mitchell.  “It is significant to note that Bank of America has supported the Kravis Center since 1986 as contributors to the original building campaign. We deeply appreciate their continued commitment to art and culture in our community.”

Before moving on from sugary sweets to So You Think You Can Dance, Annual Friend Members heard from Stephanie Glavin, Palm Beach County Market Manager for Bank of America, who also thanked the donors for their commitment.  She acknowledged that supporting the Kravis Center not only supports the arts, but supports business in our community, as the Center acts as a catalyst to attract new businesses and to spark innovation.

Centrally located in West Palm Beach, the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts is one of the premier performing arts centers in the Southeast with a renowned national and international reputation. Established as a leading force in the social fabric of the community, its many outreach programs are as broad and varied as the community itself. To date, the Center has opened the door to the performing arts for approximately two million school children.

November, 2015- Wellington Hometown Holiday Food Drive

Do you want to help make the holiday season bright for families in need this year? The Village of Wellington is asking for assistance in making sure no Village resident goes without a hot meal this Thanksgiving. This year’s Hometown Holiday Food Drive is a partnership with Wellington’s InterFaith, the Goddard School, Ultima Fitness, Tom and Regis Wenham, and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. Donations will be accepted through Wednesday, November 18th, 2015. Residents are encouraged to donate the following food items:

· Instant mashed potatoes
· Packaged stuffing (mix)
· Cornbread mix
· Cranberry sauce
· Turkey gravy
· Canned vegetables

Donations can be dropped off at the Village of Wellington’s Municipal Complex (12300 Forest Hill Boulevard), Village Park (11700 Pierson Road), Ultima Fitness, Lake Wellington Professional Centre (12133 Ken Adams Way) and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, District 8 Substation.

All food donations will go directly to local families in need in the community. Residents looking for assistance can contact Gregg Harr with Wellington Presbyterian Church at (561) 307-2900, Dee Aubry with Wellington Presbyterian Church at (561) 793-1007 or their local house of worship. All requests must me made prior to Wednesday, November 18th.
