Wellington Plants Seeds for Greener Tomorrow
Wellington celebrated National Public Lands Day (NPLD) with approximately 50 volunteers planting more than 700 pine seedlings at the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas Environmental Preserve.
On Saturday, September 27, more than 175,000 volunteers nationwide visited their favorite parks, beaches, wildlife preserves or forests and chipped in to help improve these treasured places. Wellington residents did their part in the 21st annual National Public Lands Day (NPLD), the largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands in the United States. The group included members of the Wellington Garden Club, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Cub Scouts.
The seedlings planted were “South Florida” Slash pines, which are specifically adapted to our local environment. This marks Wellington’s 2nd year planting for NPLD. The Village is pleased to report that 95% of the seedlings planted last year are still thriving. Special thanks to the volunteers who planted seedlings for a greener tomorrow. (See photos below)

November, 2015 – New Dog Obedience Classes in Wellington, FL
Wellington is excited to offer new dog obedience classes for you and your furry, four-legged friends.
Instructor Barb Forgash will lead the classes. She comes to us with a passion for dogs, a wealth of information, and over 35 years of experience in the dog training field, including as founding member and training director of two obedience clubs. Barb’s classes require active participation from handlers, using the praise method of training paired with homework activities. Barb will target specific needs and address requested issues. Whether you plan to show off your prized pal or simply need to control their behavior, this class is for you. Pre-vet students from Wellington High School will also be on site to assist in making sure all participants receive the best, and most successful, one-on-one training experience.
Classes are held on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., beginning November 2, 2015. The program is open to participants ages 16 or older, who have never titled a dog in obedience. Class options include a “Blended” class that combines Puppy Kindergarten (for dogs under 6 months) and Basic Home Obedience (for dogs over 6 months) from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Following this class is the Basic Home Obedience Class (for dogs over 6 months) from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Class sizes are limited. Registration is $40 for an 8-week session, and must be done in person at the Village Park Gymnasium, 11700 Pierson Road. Actual classes will take place in a safely sectioned-off area of the Wellington Municipal Complex parking lot, 12300 Forest Hill Boulevard (nearest Montauk Drive).
For more information on registration, contact Community Programs Coordinator, Julie Strow, at (561) 753-5262. For questions about specific program details, please contact instructor Barb Forgash, at bforgash@bellsouth.net.

October 2015
In September, Wellington’s Council adopted an $85.4 million balanced budget for Fiscal Year 2015 -2016. The Village’s budget is one of the most concrete expressions of public policy, as it sets forth the priorities for the upcoming fiscal year, which runs October 1, 2015, through September 30, 2016. The adopted budget will serve as a road map for how funds will be allocated, and as a checks and balances system to make sure we are spending Village funds properly. With Wellington property values up almost 11% for the second year in a row, and the economic outlook improving, we were able to balance the budget and increase spending on important capital improvements without increasing the tax rate.
This year’s budget calls for total spending of approximately $85.4 million, about $8.5 million more than last year, at the same property tax rate of 2.45 mills. Total Wellington taxes, including ACME assessments and solid waste collection, comprise only 17% of the average resident’s tax bill. I am happy to report that solid waste collection assessment is down by $20, which may mean an overall reduction in the average homesteaded property tax bill.
The Village’s most significant area of expenditures is maintenance of streets, parks, trails, and stormwater management system. Also included in the new budget, is additional spending for law enforcement as we continue to focus on safety and maintaining the outstanding services provided by PBSO. This year’s budget calls for Capital Project spending of approximately $9.7 million, up from $7.7 million in the prior fiscal year. Major projects slated for this year’s budget include paving 120th Avenue South from 50th street to Lake Worth Road, construction of 2 miles of pathways in the Aeroclub community, and a roundabout for traffic control at the intersection of Pierson Road and Stribling Way. The budget also includes $275,000 in contributions to reading and math programs in our local schools, $51,500 for the Wellington Senior’s Club, and $53,000 toward the County paratransit service.
Additionally, we are making progress in the construction of our new Community Center, set to open in 2016. Speaking of next year, the Village will be celebrating its 20th Anniversary in a BIG way. We look forward to sharing stories of Wellington’s history, and celebrating this milestone throughout the community. Wellington Makes Strides at 2015 Palm Beach County Heart Walk
Wellington employees accepted the challenge to help fight heart disease and stroke at this year’s Palm Beach County Heart Walk. The Wellington team raised more than $3,000 toward the promotion of the American Heart Associations’ mission of building healthier lives free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke — the nation’s No.1 and No.5 killers. A few writers for AroundWellington.com joined the Village of Wellington team this year too.
The walk took place in downtown West Palm Beach, where more than 2,000 walkers, donors, and volunteers helped bring awareness to this cause. Wellington team members also learned how to save lives through hands-only CPR training led by Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.
“This is one of my favorite events because people are actually walking the talk,” said Wellington Councilman John Greene, a passionate advocate for the walk. “We talk about getting active and improving our heart health, and this is the event where we actually do that while raising funds at the same time.”
The American Heart Association hosts more than 300 Heart Walk events across the country, with hopes of improving the cardiovascular health of Americans by 20 percent, while reducing deaths from cardiovascular disease and stroke by 20 percent by 2020.
