October, 2015 – Mom-denity Crisis

The “Mom-denity” Crisis

By Briana D’Andrea

Finding your own identity in a world of spit up, changing diapers and no sleep can be a tough feat. You used to be this strong and career driven woman who would stop at nothing to get that big promotion and impress your boss, but once you have a child, priorities shift. That huge project you once had your heart set on is now being pulled on string by string, by the little hands of your budding baby. Sure, you may go back to work and eventually get to work on that said project, but the feeling of knowing there’s that little special someone waiting at home for you changes things.

Someone once told me that this is “just a moment in your life.” I live by that sentiment every single day. The truth is my little man won’t want to hold my hand or give me one last kiss before bed someday. So each and everyday I promise to capture the moment I am in. Hold still, turn off my phone and relish in the pure bliss of being mom.

However, every mom at one point or another poses the question, “Who am I, other than mommy?” It can be tough to find the time to be yourself and enjoy the things you once loved, when you immerse yourself into being the mommy and wife you think your family wants you to be. You have the constant burden of what to make for dinner, is my child getting in enough time with me, there’s loads of laundry and dishes with my name on it. Let’s not forget how many more questions enter your psyche when another child pops into the equation. The truth, is often times, your child is more than fine, because you’re questioning it. Order takeout, put the chores on hold and do what you love, what defines YOU. Whether it means joining a book club, taking a dance class, going for a run or even just writing in a journal. These things are important to keeping true to who you are and in the long run if you’re happy, then your family is happy for it!

Try to find a sense of community. This year I took it upon myself to become my son’s room mom for his class. Only two weeks in and I feel a sense of purpose in my community. Volunteering my time for my son and his pals has meant so much to me already. I’ve been able to connect with the other moms, find partnerships and make new friends. We all have one thing in common and that’s to ensure our children are getting the nourishment and education we had always hoped for, so that they can someday become positive contributing members of our society. So why not join the PTA or help with a major school event? You’ll be glad you did.

Next time you get down and out about your friends on Facebook, who are enjoying a nice glass of pinot by the lake and that fact that you haven’t taken a shower all day, relish in the fact that you are making one of the hardest sacrifices out there. To give up your dreams and aspirations for “just a moment in your life,” and before you know it, you’ll only have the memories to look back on.

The original “Oktoberfest” occurred in Munich, on October 12, 1810, for the commemoration of King Ludwig I and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen marriage. Now, two hundred and five years later, Palm Beach County is host to one of the largest Oktoberfest’s in the country. Held the second and third weekend in October, the American German Club, on Lantana Road in Lake Worth, brings this German tradition to life for its 42nd year. There is something to delight everyone in the family. Oktoberfest at the American German Club is one of my favorite ways to celebrate my German heritage and fall. If you haven’t been, it is worth a visit.

oktoberfest1

Love food? The American German club offers traditional Oktoberfest fare such as giant hot dogs and brats. Want serious German dishes? They’ve got them. Try some Sauerbraten, Schnitzel, Goulash, or Red Cabbage. Don’t forget to save room for a sweet like a slice of black forest cake or the ever-popular apple strudel. They also offer many eats for those not so adventurous. Have a giant pretzel or dill pickle! Beer may be the highlight of the festival with many imported varieties to try, but the German club also offers an impressive wine selection. You can also try a selection of fruit flavored schnapps.

Oktoberfest9

As you stuff your face, enjoy the authentic German music by bands flown over from Germany to perform for you. There are also Bavarian dance groups and even a Beerstein holding contest. For the young and young at heart, there are many midway rides and carnival games to keep you entertained.

oktoberfest10

The festival runs Friday through Sunday the weekends of October 9th and October 16th this year. Plan to spend the day with the family celebrating the Royal Wedding of King Ludwig I and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen! Visit the American German Club’s website for more information about Oktoberfest.

Don’t Gag at Garlic

By Sabeen Faquir

Garlic, however pungent, is medicinally wonderful. Imagine, it is as aromatic as it is beneficial for arterial health, free-radical scavenging, and immunity.

Garlic is known to hinder blood clot formations and relax blood vessels. Like aspirin, garlic utilizes the COX enzyme pathway. It prevents the formation of thromboxanes which are used in clotting and closing blood vessels.  This is an irreversible effect of garlic. Garlic also dilates blood vessels (Phaneuf). In one study, they found taking 2 capsules of 240mg capsules of aged garlic lowered blood pressure by 11.8+/-5.4mmHg over 12 weeks (Ried et al). Garlic is also known to lower total serum cholesterol (Pande, Srinivasan).

Garlic is a powerful anti-oxidant.  It is these abilities which attribute garlic to help prevent the start of cancer (Phaneuf). It was found that garlic with the highest amount of allicin (an important sulfurous molecule of garlic), flavonoids, and phenolic compounds helped hinder tumor growth in mice when the mice were “injected intraperitoneally with fresh, microwaved, 3-month-old, leaves, and boiled garlic extracts, respectively, at 20 mg/kg/0.2 mL.” It was found that fresh or microwaved garlic proved to shrink tumor size more effectively than other forms of garlic. Heating reduced its effects by a large margin. Garlic’s antioxidant capacity is correlated to its anticancer activities (Shirzad et al). For those who may not know, allicin breaks down into the other beneficial molecules of garlic (Phaneuf).

Allicin is even a potent anti-microbial. In vitro studies of allicin proved it can inhibit Eimeria tenella sporozoites which cause Chicken coccidiosis (Alnassan et al).  Chicken coccidiosis is a parasitic infection of chickens that can damage their gut wall and lead to death. Chicken coccidiosis cannot be transmitted to humans. Another antimicrobial molecule of garlic, ajoene, was found to inhibit communication of pathogenic Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This inhibition prevented the growth of the bacteria in vitro and in vivo (Jakobsen et al). Other constituents of garlic have effect against sepsis. Particularly, they can inhibit reactive oxygen species and proinflammatory cytokines like TNF- alpha, Interleukin 1Beta and Interleukin 6 (Lee et al).

If you are interested in doing garlic to benefit your health, try taking an oral supplement with allicin, the aromatic compound attributed with garlic’s effectiveness. But, deodorized or odor free supplements may not do the trick because in order for allicin to be produced from garlic, a molecule called alliin has to be converted by an alliinase enzyme. The enteric coating of deodorized or odor free supplements prevents the conversion of alliin into allicin (Phaneuf). Also, garlic oil supplements do not contain allicin so don’t take them under the misconception (Allicinfacts.com). Aged garlic may be a good alternative but know the aging process reduces the antioxidant capacity of garlic (Shirzad et al).

October 2015 – Important Facts about Pet Pain

Important Facts about Pet Pain

By Dr. Mark Planco

Pets are often stoic about their pain. They don’t want to burden us with their discomfort. It is natural for them to deal with the way they feel and continue doing their normal routine despite being in pain. In nature an animal that shows pain or weakness is targeted by predators, so they mask their pain as best as possible.

Our domesticated pets are far from wild animals but determining if they are in pain is often difficult. Acute pain is obvious, usually involves a vocalization and may be a serious injury. Chronic pain that comes on gradually with age is more difficult to recognize. Changes in behavior are often a good indicator of pain. Dogs or cats who uncharacteristically avoid contact or become aggressive when pet a certain way or on particular area may be in pain. Cats that don’t jump onto surfaces or dogs who won’t walk up stairs or get on their favorite couch or bed are likely to be avoiding that movement due to pain.

There are many ways to manage pet pain. Diet and exercise are important. Overweight animals with arthritis have more pain when painful joints are carrying excess weight. Low calorie food measured to appropriate amounts and limiting fatty treats will help weight loss and reduction of pain. Exercise in moderation keeps muscles strong and help support the joints. Over activity or inactivity will make the arthritis worse by either causing too much pain or causing muscle atrophy.

You can also provide assistance to your painful pets by providing them with accommodations at home. Ramps, steps to get into bed, raising the food and water bowl for large dogs, feeding cats on ground (assuming you don’t have a dog who’ll eat it) will make normal behavior easier.

Thankfully we have numerous very good and safe medications to manage chronic pain. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) are good pain mediators and don’t affects dogs or cats normal stomach protection. Joint supplements are made for dogs and cats and help to keep the joints as healthy as possible. There are additional stronger medications available when needed. Some cats and dogs are hard to medicate. We have several methods to medicate dogs and cats whether it is inside a flavored treat or given transdermally (through their skin). Thinking that you can’t give the medicine to your animal is not acceptable. Human medications are usually dangerous to pets and should never be used before consulting your veterinarian.

Acute or chronic pain affects our pets no different than it affects people. See through the language barrier and if you think your animal family member hurts, consult your veterinarian to help relieve their pain.

Beyond Man

Conquer Ourselves

 By Kelly McNulty/Delesandro

KellyMcNulty

Lives seem valueless

So easily diminished

Vanishing are the sprawling forests

Limited are the great beasts of the lands

Suffering of animals is so rampant

But, their cries are ignored

Silenced by their economic benefit

Backs are turned

Society refuses to know of the horrors

If it benefits a human,

Does its life even count?

Not in this world that we exist

Lives are only but the price on their head

No more and no less

Are we savages of just a higher form?

Oceans are stripped of creatures

Vanishing are the ancient reefs

Murky is the vast sea

Air is but a polluted fog

Misty with the souls that disconnect

Disconnect and isolate themselves

Do we care of other life that exists?

Lost in this concrete jungle

We seek to exist

Build our corporate empires

Dominate the lands

Can we find our way home?

Back to the nature that calls

Whispering its soft, fresh breath

Asking for mercy

Wanting our souls to open their doors

See the lives beyond

Rebuild the damage

Preserve the little that is left

Rid the greed

Conquer ourselves

Joey’s Outback Adventures – Indoor Fun for Children and Parents

By Krista Martinelli

For parents with young children, Joey’s Outback Adventures is a wonderful, indoor haven. It’s fun for the kids and very accommodating for the parents.  Joey’s Outback turns four years old, as a business, in February of 2016.  Meanwhile, owners Francesca and Michael Friedman just celebrated their son Joey’s 8th birthday.

They have a special place in their hearts for foster children and offer a FREE foster children day at Joey’s Outback once a month, when foster children and their families get free admission.  When he was thirteen months old, the Friedmans adopted Joey. As a mom, Francesca started looking for good places for him to play.  “We had no kids in our neighborhood, and he needed to socialize. I noticed that there was a lot of potential for more family-run indoor play places in our area.  I wanted to compile everything that was fun and put it under one roof,” she explains. Of course, this new play place needed to be fun, safe and have air conditioning.  She also envisioned a place that served both traditional “kid food,” as well as more interesting food choices for adults.  Since the adults need to make themselves comfortable while their kids bounce and play, she thought of leather chairs, massage chairs and WiFi.  And so, they built Joey’s Outback, located in the Fresh Market plaza on Forest Hill Boulevard in Wellington, naming it after Joey.  It’s approximately 14,000 square feet, so there’s a lot of room to run, bounce and play indoors.  Also, they added flat screen TVs and there’s even a treadmill, for anyone who would like to get some exercise while their kids are getting exercise.  For the children, there are a variety of bounce houses, slides, arcade games and a special area for the toddlers to play.

party

Almost four years later, they have nearly perfected the birthday party.  They have put on over 1,000 birthday parties.  “Our birthday parties are great!” says Friedman. “It’s so easy for the parents.”  They just have to walk in and remember “the three C’s” she says – cake, candles and the children.  Joey’s staff does everything for them, so parents can simply enjoy their guests and enjoy the day.  They have a very well-timed schedule. Each party gets two hours in a party room, a visit from the character (mascot) Joey, and then party guests can continue to play for the rest of the day. Francesca Friedman is Italian and creates some delicious meals for the parties, liked baked ziti, always cooked fresh the same day.  They also order pizzas and wings from Lutina’s Pizza.  Francesca’s wants the birthday food to be good-quality, not just mediocre.

Joey’s Outback is also beginning to franchise.  They recently awarded their first franchise to a group of four women business owners.  They are currently finding the perfect location, which will probably be in Stuart, Florida.  Most importantly, the Joey’s Outback name will continue to be family-run, family-oriented in its added locations.  “Once people find us, they seem to never go back to other indoor play places,” says Friedman. “We work hard to make people happy!”

Through franchising, the owners of Joey’s Outback are excited to create more public awareness about what a great place Joey’s is for indoor play.  “We are going to be getting Joey’s Outback all over the map with these new locations!”

bounceHouse

Joey’s Outback posts a monthly calendar of activities on their website, as well as via AroundWellington.com.  There are always specials and there’s always a lot going on!  They offer a discounted “Special Needs” Day on Wednesdays.  There’s also discounted admission in general on Wednesdays.  Every Friday, during the day, there are discounts for foster children and homeschool children.  On Friday nights from 4pm to 8pm, it’s Family Night, when the adults and the kids can come enjoy the bounce houses together.  For Halloween, they will be doing some seasonal crafts and will have a costume contest.

Joey's Outback Adventures, where the parents and kids both have fun!
Joey’s Outback Adventures, where the parents and kids both have fun!

I asked Francesca about some of the best things parents say about Joey’s Outback.  “It’s the atmosphere here,” she says. “Our employees are very sweet and truly enjoy being around kids.”  She explains that she’s “very fussy” about selecting employees, as it’s so important for them to be good at interaction with children.  Parents are also quite pleased with the variety of food and the quality of the food in the café.  Instead of “just pizza,” this is a place where you can order meatball subs, Italian subs, grilled chicken salad and now beer or wine too.  You can order a veggie platter, a fruit bowl or eggplant parmesan. “We’re adding some Spanish dishes to the menu too,” says Francesca. The space is very comfortable to relax or to get work done for a few hours.  A lot of parents will come in with a laptop, a brief case and get to work, happy that their kids are having a great time.

“What are some of the best comments you hear kids say about Joey’s Outback?” I asked Francesca.  Here’s her response.  See the video!

Joey’s Outback is known for giving back to their “around Wellington” community. They give a lot of donations to fundraisers, raffles and schools.  Once a year they hold a big celebration for the Kids Cancer Foundation. “We give back wherever we can,” says Francesca.  Around the holidays, they put a donation box out for toy donations for foster children.

Check out their weekly specials at Joey’s Outback. You can also purchase Frequent Hopper Cards, which give you ten hops (ten visits) for $90 and they never expire.  They offer seasonal discounts on the Frequent Hopper Cards and their gift certificates.

Let’s face it.  South Florida is almost always too hot for outdoor play.  When it’s not too hot, it’s raining.  Finding a place like Joey’s Outback to bring your children to play is a wonderful thing!  Children can get their exercise and get away from their electronics for a few hours. They also have the opportunity to socialize with a lot of different kids.  If you have children and haven’t made it to Joey’s Outback yet, you really should stop by.  It’s truly fun for the whole family.

Beauty in Wellington

Story and Photos by Bryan Hayes

Wellington offers so much majestic beauty.  There is so much to behold, and it was my goal to get out and see some of its natural wonders.   I had never been to The Wellington Environmental Preserve at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Everglades Habitat, so I looked at it as a great opportunity to see it for myself.

I knew it was going to be an adventure when my GPS told me to turn right on “Flying Cow Road” on the way.   Immediately after, I lost cell signal on the dirt road that was leading me to the preserve (I took the scenic route).  Once back on pavement, the entrance came up quickly.  With no cars, it looked like I was going to have the entire place to myself, which I did.

Getting out of the car, it was noticeably quiet.  The only sounds were of birds off in the distance.   While I knew of the preserve, I did not prepare with any background research prior to leaving.  Instead, I wanted to explore it with a fresh perspective.

IMG_6210

The walking trail has a map at the beginning and others throughout.  What I realized not only from the map, but from the overall landscape, is how large it is.  The observation tower, often in the distance, is under construction and will be available again to the public in October.

IMG_6208b

Even if it was open, I would not have made it that far.  While listening to the birds chirping, I also started hearing thunder off in the distance and knew that rain and my camera do not mix.  So if you go, check the weather forecast beforehand.

Other points to consider are that there are restrooms throughout the walking trail.   Also, bring water with you.   If you have young children, know that they are in for a good walk.  If you have a horse, you can also ride.

IMG_6225b

There are also two parking areas.  One north, and one south.  On the walking trail it is marked, so you know if you are heading towards parking 1, or parking 2.

In the end, it was more than I had expected, but it was not until I got back home that I was able to truly appreciate how massive it really is and what I was seeing.  The equestrian trail is 3.6 miles.  Included on the walking trail are seven learning areas. The observation tower is six stories high. The area itself is 365 acres and is a rainwater storage area. In 2010, the Palm Beach County Chapter of the American Society of Civil Society of Civil Engineers named it the “Project of the Year.”

IMG_6217b

“In compliance with the 1994 Everglades Forever Act, rainwater from Wellington must be cleansed of phosphorus before it enters the Florida Everglades. The southern half of Wellington (Basin B) has 9,230 acres of storm water runoff (rainwater) that is now routed west to Section 24. It leaves Section 24 via the C-1 canal heading north to the C-51 canal that runs along SR80 before finally entering the Everglades.

IMG_6213b

In order to accomplish this, seven storm water Pump Stations were built or renovated along with the widening of nearby canals. Approximately one inch of rainwater from Basin B was also re-routed to reach Section 24. It is then naturally cleansed as it flows through over two miles of combined wetland/marsh area, littoral shelves and deep water sediment traps.”

If you haven’t been there, it’s a beautiful spot to visit.

IMG_6212b

“There are no other Everglades in the world. They are, they have always been, one of the unique regions of the earth; remote, never wholly known. Nothing anywhere else is like them.” – Marjory Stoneman Douglas

October, 2015 – Three Reasons Salespeople Suffer

0

Three Reasons Salespeople Suffer In Small Businesses

By Donald C. Kelly, the Sales Evangelist

DonaldKelly2

As a small business owner, you have a lot of things to worry about. One of the most important things is sales. Sales is the lifeblood of any organization. You have to bring in revenue to grow the organization, keep the doors open, pay people and put some change in your pocket. Without sales, your business will fail.

So why is it that most businesses have a hard time with the most vital part of their organization? Many times it’s because they don’t know what they’re doing. Oftentimes, they have never received formal sales training. Typically, the entrepreneur is the one who started the organization.

She may have had a really cool idea and saw some initial success, but when it came to selling, she wasn’t able to do it. So she hired someone to come in. This new salesperson had a great personality. The salesperson may have been a cousin or a friend, a son or daughter, a niece or nephew, or maybe it was her hairdresser’s brother.

Whoever it was, they too were inexperienced when it comes to sales and simply worked off the cuff. Take it from someone who was that friend hired because of an “outgoing personality.” It doesn’t work! Here are three of the most common reasons why selling suffers in small businesses

1. They don’t know who to go after.

As a small business, many times the entrepreneur or salespeople takes whatever they can get. I saw this in a particular company I worked for. Many times the customer wasn’t our ideal customer. But since we needed the money, we bent over backward and said, “Yup, we can do that.” We were chasing the dollar as opposed to chasing and developing solutions for our ideal customers.

Because of that, the company never grew. We remained stagnant and, eventually, the salespeople left. A lot of people were fired and horrible things happened. I saw another company actually shut down because of that problem. As entrepreneurs, you’ve got to make sure your business is focused ONLY on your ideal customers. But how do you find the ideal customer to go after?

If you’ve made one sale to that ideal customer, then maybe you can go ahead and evaluate them. Question them. Do an interview with them. Take them to lunch. Really understand their business and why they elected to go with your company.

The other thing you can do, if you don’t have a customer, is to look at your competitor’s customers. Learn why they chose your competitor. Why did they have a need in the first place? How much do they earn in revenue annually? How many employees do they have? Start developing a customer persona.

The more you can understand, the better you will be at crafting your ideal customer and making a message to approach them. Make sure you understand how they make money and how your product or service helps them to do so.

2. The fear of rejection holds them back.

The fear of rejection holds a lot of salespeople back in small to mid-sized companies. It’s just the fact that they have never done this before. They’re afraid that people are going to say no. They are worried the product is not going to be effective. They are concerned that maybe they’re not the greatest seller in the world. All of this holds them back.

The other thing that you need to understand about fear is that it is not real. Fear is usually something that we put in our minds that has never occurred. But because we tell ourselves about this fear so much, that it’s so true, we paint this picture in our minds and we start to believe it.

We then start to act upon it. The fact is if you think people are going to reject you when you prospect, then that fear is going to cripple you. So our solution is to role play — to practice. Get rid of the idea of fear. Get rid of the false ideas in your mind by actually doing it.

Go out and get someone who you can practice with, somebody you can practice selling with. A colleague, your spouse, brother, sister, whoever. Just sit down with that person and do a role play of the situation you fear the most. Role playing is a fantastic way to increase confidence. The more you can practice, the less fear is going to be there.

3. They don’t have a process to convert sales.

The third reason small businesses sales suffer is because they don’t have an effective sales process. They don’t have a way of converting prospects into paying customers. They don’t have a way of finding people. As I mentioned earlier, many entrepreneurs find an outgoing person and say, “Hey, come be a salesperson for my organization.” That person comes in and, since the business has no process or real training, does whatever he thinks is best. Again this does NOT work.

However, here is a breakdown of an effective process that can help your organization:

  1. Focus on getting the ideal customer.
  2. Develop an effective message that will speak to your ideal customer about true business challenges which you can solve.
  3. Make sure you are selling to the decision maker – the person who can say yes in the end. Find out if this person has the money or budget to buy from you. You’ve got to get all of that in your discovery.
  4. Before you go any further, once you figure all that out – they have the pain, they have the budget, they are the decision maker – you can move forward with the process and do a demonstration of your product or service.
  5. You then can create and present the proposal. Present it to them. Don’t just send it in an email. Work with them. Go through it with them. More than likely, if you did everything upfront, that deal’s going to close.

This is a very simple process and may sound too elementary. However, if you don’t follow it, you’re going to waste a lot of time and money. A typical salesperson will just go out and show a product. They demonstrate it. They don’t qualify the customer. And in the end, they have nothing to show for it. They will lose a lot of business. The key is to create an effective process.

Seeing Success

As a small-business owner, sales are important to you. You can’t dodge that fact, or your business will not become successful. If you have someone else selling for you, do your best to make sure they succeed. Take time to make sure you and your salesperson develop an ideal customer, learn to overcome your fear, and develop a simple, effective process. If you do this you will see success.

I’ve worked with small businesses. I’ve been on management teams. I’ve been the “typical” salesperson. I’ve learned the things that make small businesses effective. I know how to make them become a lean, mean selling machine. If you’d like to sit down and have a 30-minute session and bounce some ideas off of me, feel free to reach out to me. I’d love to chat with you and assist in any way I’m able.

Royal Palm Beach, FL– Western Academy Charter School (WACS)  is currently collecting peanut butter and jelly for the Palm Beach County Food Bank.  This is the WACS Parent Teacher Committee’s first community service project of the school year.  The first drop off last week weighed 144 pounds.  The food drive continues through the month of September with the goal set to deliver 500 pounds.

There is a high need for the food banks at this time of year.   All donations from this collection will stay here in Palm Beach County to help feed some of the 64,000 children that go to bed hungry each night. The children love PB&J and it is a great source of protein.
