HONDA CLASSIC LEADER DISCUSSES REBRANDING WITH KRAVIS CENTER CORPORATE PARTNERS

Corporate Partners members and guests treated to special discussion by Kenneth Kennerly(West Palm Beach, Fla.)

Kenneth Kennerly, Executive Director of The Honda Classic, received an impressive round of applause recently when he provided an overview and lively question and answer session at the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts’ Corporate Partners Business and Breakfast Series. Held in the Khoury Family Dance Rehearsal Hall, Kennerly gave an in depth presentation of one of the premier events on the PGA TOUR.

With more than 27 years in the sports marketing industry, Kennerly founded his own firm IGP Sports & Entertainment Group in 1996, which was acquired by IMG Worldwide in April 2013. IMG is the global pioneer and leader in the sports, fashion, media and entertainment industry with more than 3,500 employees operating in more than 30 countries around the globe.  In addition to serving as the Executive Director of The Honda Classic, Kennerly also oversees the new IMG Golf Palm Beach office, and is the Senior Vice President of IMG Golf and Director of the North America Event Group.

Judith Mitchell, the Kravis Center’s CEO, introduced Corporate Partners Executive Committee Chair, Jeffrey Stoops, President and CEO of SBA Communications and Kravis Center Board member and welcomed Corporate Partners members to the second and final breakfast specifically targeted to that membership. More than 110 guests attended, including George Elmore, Life Trustee and Corporate Partners Executive Committee Honorary Chair; Bill Meyer, Board Treasurer, immediate past Board Chair and immediate past Corporate Partners Executive Committee Chair; Jane Mitchell, current Board Chair, and additional Board members, John Jenkins and John Kessler

After being introduced by Jeffrey Stoops, Kennerly began his presentation by saying, “We are in the entertainment business, which is why it is great that we are here today at the Kravis Center – we are in the same business.” He then continued by explaining how he transformed The Honda Classic into more than just a professional golf tournament, ultimately rebranding the event to an annual “must attend” Event.

In 2006, Kennerly was recruited by the PGA TOUR to resurrect The Honda Classic, which benefits 135 charities.  Since rebranding the event, the attendance has soared to a record breaking 160,000 spectators in 2013, with more than $8 million in charitable contributions given in the last seven years, including the primary beneficiary, The Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation.  While continuing to rebrand, The Honda Classic has received numerous awards, including the 2014 Providencia Award, which acknowledges tourism impact.

Kravis Center Corporate Partners members are the corporate and professional leadership in Palm Beach County whose mission is to support and enable the Kravis Center to continue its extensive educational and community outreach programs. Corporate Partners membership offers business leaders the opportunity to act as an integral part of the Kravis Center, building awareness of the Center within the business community. The breakfast series is one of many benefits for this sponsorship level.

Centrally located in West Palm Beach, the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts is one of the premier performing arts centers in the Southeast with a renowned national and international reputation. Established as a leading force in the social fabric of the community, its many outreach programs are as broad and varied as the community itself. To date, the Center has opened the door to the performing arts for approximately 2 million school children.

For general information about the Kravis Center performances and events, or to inquire about Corporate Partner membership, please visit www.kravis.org or call 561-651-4320.

Leaky Pipes

By Bryan Hayes

“You have a fountain in your front yard?”   He said as I opened the door.

What? I thought.  “I don’t have a fountain.”

Stepping outside, I noticed the water gushing in the middle of my yard.

“You do now.”  From behind me, he said.

The fountain was the product of an underground busted pipe.   When they came to fix the issue, it became a rather interesting learning opportunity for me.  I was educated not only about my problem, but the issue of the deteriorating infrastructure that is not only a local but national issue.

With time there is the normal wear and tear that affects everything.  When it comes to water mains, pipes crack and eventually break as was the case in my yard.   My fix though, luckily, was rather simple.  They replaced the piece of pipe that had cracked and eventually burst.   There are also other options available, according to fellow Living Green writer Jathy Garcia who provided additional insight.

Often times, home owners do not realize the consequences of planting trees close to their house, according to Jathy.   As the Vice President of Hi-Tech Plumbing and Air, Jathy sees it all too often.   Often times it is out of sight, out of mind.

We have beautiful trees growing throughout Florida and on both residential and industrial property.   Those same trees can be problematic, because trees are living organisms.  Trees need four things in order to survive:  sunlight, soil, water and air.

While trees provide incredible benefits, they also can pose a potential danger when planted close to homes.  As I have witnessed firsthand at another house I was living at, the roots of trees will literally seek out water.

We had a rather large ficus tree in our front yard.   The tree stretched outwards providing some much pleasant shade.   While the tree was rather beautiful, it also had a hidden secret.

Below ground the tree was thirsty and literally sought out a water source.   The water came in the form of the pipes where when they dug they found that the roots had literally encircled the pipes in one area to the point where they had cracked them.   What was most surprising to me is how far away from the base of the tree the roots had traveled underground.

The sewer pipes were made out of clay, and the combination of their age coupled by the root intrusion were too much.  It was an older home, and it is a pretty simple equation.  The older the home is the more likely that the sewer and water pipes are also old.

The most common types of water pipes are made out of PVC, CPVC, PEX, Copper, and Galvanized.   Each has its advantages and disadvantages.  If you have new or older property, a recommendation is to contact a trained professional to ensure that your underground infrastructure is sound.

In the event that your pipes need replacement there are options.  One is to have the pipes lined. This is a process whereby the existing pipe is fitted with an epoxy liner that seals and reinforces thereby strengthening the pipe.   This is not a budget-friendly option, but does offer a long-term solution which may be beneficial especially in commercial developments where cost is not as much an issue.

For the more traditional fix, Jathy Garcia with Hi-Tech Plumbing & Air, understands the dynamics and complexities of plumbing and can provide further insight.    They can help not only by diagnosing an issue but by resolving it in the most professional manner.   So if you are wondering if your trees may be posing a potential danger to your infrastructure, give Your Plumber in a Skirt a call at Hi-Tech! (561) 232-3288.

(WEST PALM BEACH) – Karen L. Steele has been named interim executive director of the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, according to David Miller, president of the organization’s board of trustees. In this role, Steele will be responsible for overall strategy and operations for the Gardens, including oversight of its art, gallery and garden, financial development, human resources, programming and execution of its mission.

The historic Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, Inc. is a recognized 501 (c) (3) operating foundation established in 1977 by the prominent sculptor Ann Weaver Norton (1905-1982). The rare palm and sculpture gardens, exhibition galleries and artist studio are located at 2051 South Flagler Drive in West Palm Beach.

According to Miller, Steele’s experience as an independent marketing and communications consultant and executive with corporations, government-regulated entities, advertising agencies and nonprofit organizations is a great fit for this leadership position.  Her long-time relationship with the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens made her an ideal candidate for the role.

“Karen’s more than 25-year association with the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens as a member, donor and volunteer will allow her to easily jump into this leadership role,” said Miller. “She brings tremendous strength in strategic planning and management, marketing and communications skills through her professional background. Her nonprofit expertise has been showcased with a series of workshops she developed and presented for the Community Foundation, Nonprofits First and other organizations. Her love of art and antiques, gardens and historic homes is a great fit for us. ”

Steele has past experience serving in interim management roles for companies in transition, and has developed full-service marketing departments for multiple organizations.

“It will be a privilege to honor the important legacy of Ann Norton through this very special garden and museum,” said Steele. “I look forward to working with the great staff here, a wonderful board of committed trustees, a dedicated executive committee, the community-minded patrons of the Gardens Conservancy and the Gentlemen of the Garden, and all of the Gardens’ donors, members and volunteers to explore continued opportunities for the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens.”

In addition, Steele has served her community in volunteer roles with the El Cid Neighborhood Association, Rosarian Academy and St. Andrews Episcopal School, South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, Bethesda by the Sea, the Norton Museum and the American Red Cross.

The West Palm Beach resident received her BA from Rider University in New Jersey. Her husband J. Rodman Steele, Jr. is an intellectual property attorney, former president of the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens’ Board of Trustees, and long-term member of the Gentlemen of the Garden.

The 1.7-acre Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens are currently open to the public Wednesday through Sunday, from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. For more information about the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, visit www.ansg.org or call 561-832-5238.
