SCIENCE GETS STEAMY

South Florida Science Center and Aquarium announces next ‘Science on Tap’ – Laws of Attraction: The Science of Sex Appeal

(WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.)  Science is sexy, according to leadership at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, and it will prove this hypothesis at the next Science on Tap event, Laws of Attraction: The Science of Sex Appeal. To be held again at O’Shea’s Irish Pub in West Palm Beach, guests are invited to ‘drink up – get smart’ while taking some cues from guest speaker Dr. Jason Carter, board certified sexologist.  Dr. Carter will dish on how chemistry is part of the equation – detailing why the flip of someone’s hair or bat of an eyelash can be the start of something more.  Starting at 8 p.m. on July 24, guests will leave with tips and tricks to attract a potential mate.

Dr. Jason Carter

“Our first two Science on Tap events were very well received,” said Kate Arrizza, Science Center COO.  “And we know that ‘Laws of Attraction’ will be another big draw.  The science behind sexual attraction is stimulating and provocative, and we look forward to Dr. Carter’s real-world anecdotes.  As we continue to live our mission to ‘open every mind to science,’ we are pleased with the enthusiasm surrounding Science on Tap.  The program is expanding our reach in the community, with practical and interesting topics from world-class scientists!”

Modeled after “Science Cafés,” a trend sweeping pubs throughout the country, the Science Center’s ‘Science on Tap’ is the first registered Science Café between Vero Beach and Fort Lauderdale. According to Arrizza, it will be the only place in Palm Beach County where for the price of a cup of coffee, a quality craft beer, or a smooth glass of wine, anyone can come to discuss the latest trends in science and technology with a world-class scientist. With a motto to ‘drink up – get smart,’ you know you are in for a casual-education session, as the goal of the program is for guests to have fun while learning a little bit more about everyday curiosities.

While offering up scientific secrets to snag a mate, Dr. Carter will indulge the crowd with plenty of racy and behind-the-scenes stories.  He has devoted his life’s work to sexology – working, studying and volunteering his time to be the supreme expert in the matter.  He received a Ph.D from the American Academy of Clinical Sexologists, with a focus on the study of sexual deviance; his master’s degree in marriage and family from Nova Southeastern University; and his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Florida Atlantic University.  Dr. Carter maintains several professional affiliations, including the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists, among others.

‘Science on Tap’ is a free event, and patrons can enjoy O’Shea’s happy hour specials, which include $1 off well drinks, $3 draft beers, $4 bottle beers and $3 Irish Car Bomb drinks (starting at 7 p.m.).  ‘Science on Tap’ is being co-sponsored by the West Palm Beach Downtown Development Authority.

The next in the series will speak (or bark) to those that consider themselves a dog-lover, synonymous to pet-parent, dog-enthusiasts or fur-baby mommy or daddy.  Taking place on Thursday, September 11 at 8 p.m. at O’Shea’s Irish Pub, Dr. Lisa Radosta, a board certified veterinary behaviorist, will deconstruct the assumptions, myths and mysteries surrounding our canine companions, including the science behind a variety of dog traits, such as body language, emotions and general intelligence.

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, recently named the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches’ nonprofit of the year, features more than 50 hands-on educational exhibits, an 8,000 gallon fresh and salt water aquarium- featuring both local and exotic marine life, a digital planetarium, conservation research station, Florida exhibit hall and an interactive Everglades exhibit.  Located at 4801 Dreher Trail North, West Palm Beach, the Science Center is open Monday – Friday from 9am-5pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 10am-6pm.  For more information on the ‘Science on Tap’ series, call 561-832-1988 or visit www.sfsciencecenter.org.  Like the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium on Facebook and follow them on Twitter @SFScienceCenter.

Wellington Works to Keep Neighborhoods Beautiful

Wellington, Fla. – This summer, in an effort to keep our neighborhoods beautiful, Wellington’s Community Services department is rolling out its Trash Can Plan.

This plan, organized in part by a High School Summer Service Program student, will have staff working with volunteers to label trash cans in the White Pine, Hawthorne, Periwinkle, and Goldenrod neighborhoods. Each can in these communities will receive a label that will be tied to the SKU number already present on the receptacle. In the future, if a labeled can is left out past the allowable timeframe, Code Compliance will be able to enforce any applicable ordinances and keep the communities looking great!

The Central Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce Congratulates

Chamber Member, Visiting Angels, for Being Ranked Among

The Best Home Care Companies in the U.S.

Loxahatchee, FL – In a crowded industry where home care has been commoditized, Visiting Angels, located in Delray Beach, is among only three private duty home care companies in the entire state of Florida being recognized nationally for outstanding services to their clients and caregivers, and the only one in Palm Beach County to receive the honor.

Visiting Angels in Delray Beach received this year’s distinguished Best of Home Care Leader in Excellence Award from Home Care Pulse, the leading firm in quality assurance for private duty home care. The Award was given to the select few home care businesses that consistently ranked among the highest in 18 or more, out of 22 quality metrics assessed by Home Care Pulse. As a Leader in Excellence, Visiting Angels is now ranked among the best home care companies in the country.

“I congratulate Visiting Angels, their management, staff and registered nurses and nurse aides for making a difference in the lives of seniors,” says Wayne Burns, CEO, Central Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce.  “Through the voice of the people receiving care from Visiting Angels, this small business has proven they really care about their clients and today stand above all the rest.”

This accomplishment demonstrates Visiting Angel’s long-term dedication to excellent service and quality improvement. To qualify for this award, ten percent of their clients and caregivers were interviewed each month by Home Care Pulse. Over a 12-month period, Visiting Angels has ranked among the top five percent in overall client and caregiver satisfaction ratings in areas such as compassion of caregivers, communication, scheduling, response to problems and overall quality of care. Using feedback from clients and caregivers, as well as quality benchmarks from Home Care Pulse, the Visiting Angels management team continues to set goals to reach the highest level of excellence possible.

“At Visiting Angels, we are experts at solving the difficult challenges facing families of seniors who wish to age in place with dignity,” says Lori Dahan, Director of Visiting Angels.  “The caregivers we refer provide a full range of non-medical, in-home care services and we are proud that they and our staff have been recognized for their compassion, dedication and hard work.  Clients are pleasantly surprised to find at Visiting Angels character counts and family matters.”

The Best of Home Care Leader in Excellence Award highlights the top-performing home care businesses in the nation. Home Care Pulse believes that by honoring these providers, families looking for in-home care for a loved one will be able to recognize and choose a trusted home care provider.

“Our goal at Home Care Pulse is to empower home care businesses to reach their goals and deliver the best home care possible,” says Aaron Marcum, CEO and founder of Home Care Pulse. “We are happy to recognize Visiting Angels as a Leader in Excellence. Study Finds 3 Best Exercises to Cut Upper Arm Flab & Strengthen Tricepts

By Editor of HelpingYouCare.com, Originally posted Nov., 2013

Best Tricepts Exercises - Triangle Push-UpsA study conducted by scientists at the University of Wisconsin has isolated the three most effective tricepts exercises – which are most effective in eliminating upper arm flab.

The study was sponsored by the American Council on Exercise (ACE), a non-profit organization that fashions itself as “the Nation’s Workout Watchdog.”

The study, conducted by John Porcari, Ph.D. and Brittany Boehler, B.S., and colleagues, from the University of Wisconsin/ La Crosse Exercise and Health Program, examined eight of the most common upper arm exercises prescribed by trainers:

  • Triangle Push-Ups
  • Triceps Kickbacks,
  • Dips
  • Overhead Triceps Extensions,
  • Bar Push-downs,
  • Rope Push-downs,
  • Closed-grip Bench Press and
  • Lying Barbell Triceps Extensions.

Test Method

The study included 15 healthy female participants, ages 20 to 24, recruited from the local La Crosse community. All of the participants had prior weight-training experience, to ensure proper exercise technique and limit potential for injuries.

After abstaining from weight training for 48 hours, the participants initially were tested to determine each participant’s “one-repetition max (1 RM) for each of the following exercises: triceps kickbacks, overhead triceps extensions, bar push-downs, rope push-downs, closed-grip bench press and lying barbell triceps extensions. Dips and triangle push-ups were excluded during this first round since both of those exercises use body weight as resistance instead of weights, making the 1RM test inappropriate.”

After “one-repetition max (1 RM)” was determined for each subject, the women returned for a second day of testing.

Following is ACE’s description of the testing method then applied:

“Researchers applied two sets of electromyographic (EMG) electrodes on the long and lateral heads of each subject’s triceps brachii (the back of the upper arm) to record real-time muscle activity. To set a baseline for EMG comparison, subjects first performed a pair of maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC) for the triceps muscle. They then completed one set of seven repetitions of each of the eight different exercises. The exercises were completed in random order with a five-minute rest between each exercise to insure proper muscle recovery. Subjects lifted 70 percent of their previously determined 1 RM for the bulk of exercises; body weight was used for the dips and triangle push-ups. The EMG data from each exercise was recorded and presented as a percentage of the highest EMG readings obtained during the two MVIC trials.”

The Results

Best Tricepts Exercises - Triangle Push-UpsTriangle Push-ups are Best Upper Arm Best Exercise. Based on an analysis of the EMG data gathered by the above tests, the researchers determined that “muscle activity was greatest while subjects performed the triangle push-ups, which made it the gold standard of triceps exercises,” according to an ACE Report on the research.

The extent of muscle activity found in the tricepts muscle indicates the effectiveness of the exercise in strengthening the muscle and burning off upper flab, the ACE report explains.

“All across the board, the triangle push-ups elicited the most muscle activity in our subjects,” said the study’s co-author Brittany Boehler, B.S.

3rd Best Tricepts Exercises - DipsTriceps Kickbacks and Dips are Second and Third Most Effective Upper Arm Exercises. “The dips and triceps kickbacks weren’t that far behind either,” co-author Brittany Boehler said.

2nd Best Tricepts Exercises - Tricepts Kickbacks“Essentially, all three exercises could be used interchangeably,” she concluded.

“Because the triangle push-ups elicited the highest average EMG activity, data for the remaining seven exercises were then represented as a percentage of the EMG activity of the triangle push-up,” the ACE Report explains.

The following table from the Research Report presents these findings…Read on by visiting HelpingYouCare.com.
