April, 2014 – CCE Launches the Discover Series

CCE LAUNCHES THE DISCOVER SERIES

Discover Series Logo

Program will expose third-graders to range of art forms in three-year program

(WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.) – Have you ever wondered if your child is a potential Picasso or Oscar-bound actor? Prima ballerina or concert cellist? Award-winning author or roving reporter? On June 17th, the Center for Creative Education (CCE) will offer 60 rising third-grade students a unique opportunity to discover their passion for the arts.  CCE is launching the “Discover Series”, a signature program that will allow young children to explore music, dance, theater, visual arts and media.  The students do not have to have a specific talent or art experience. CCE is looking for kids with curiosity, a strong commitment to study the arts and the discipline to attend the weekly classes on a regular basis.

Students wishing to apply to the Discover Series must be Palm BeachCounty third-graders willing to commit to the program for the full three years.  Those enrolled will be a part of the program from third through fifth grade.  Tuition for the initial year’s 10-month program is $900 per student per year, but thanks to a $250,000 grant (from a generous donor who wishes to remain anonymous) almost all of the openings are underwritten with full or partial, need-based, scholarships.  Scholarship requests are available on the application. Registration and open houses are free and art supplies are provided.

Weekly classes begin on June 17, 2014 and run through March 12, 2015, with breaks for holidays.  Class sizes are limited and openings are available on a first-come, first-served, application basis.  Classes will take place at 425 24th Street, CCE’s namesake facility in the heart of West Palm Beach’s NorthwoodVillage. Interested parents and their children should plan to attend one of two open house sessions at CCE on either Tuesday, May 13 from 6:00 -7:30 pm or Saturday, May 24 from 10:00 – 11:30 am.  They will be able to meet the arts faculty, see brief demonstrations and take part in hands-on activities in each art area.

“The goal of the CCE Discover Series is to expose children to the arts and to give those who show special interest and commitment the instructional background and opportunity to pursue their passion,” said Robert Hamon, CEO for the arts integration and education organization. “It’s our goal that by their third and final year in the Discover Series, students will have increased knowledge and understanding of the arts, preparing them to take their artistic interest further- for the joy of performance, to apply to an audition school or simply for their own enjoyment.  In the future they may participate in the arts, or may support them as a consumer or a philanthropist.”

The non-profit CCE served nearly 13,000 Palm BeachCounty students last year – using the arts to educate and inspire creative thinking in Palm BeachCounty classrooms and after-school programming. Many of the students involved in CCE’s programming are at risk of educational failure. Through their exploration of the arts, students learn commitment, discipline, open-mindedness, team-building and creative thinking – necessary skills for developing the whole child.

In the first year of CCE’s Discover Series, 3rd grade students will be exposed to piano /keyboard, visual arts, theater/drama, wind instruments /band, dance, voice/choir, media arts and string instruments/orchestra – learning eight different art forms and spending a month exploring each form.  In the second year, the students, now 4th graders, will have more control over their art selections – choosing four of those art forms to explore more closely. In the third year, students will select two art areas for a deeper concentration and level of instruction.  Each year CCE will add a new group of 3rd graders so that by the third year there will be 3rd, 4th and 5th graders in the program.

Students will commit to one of two class times for the year – Tuesdays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. or Thursdays from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.  No auditions or prior art experience is necessary and all materials will be provided.  If the organization receives more applications than there are available spots, a waiting list will be created.

The CCE Discover Series arts faculty will be partnering with other local arts organizations to present a performance or activity every month as a way to wrap up each focus area. Participating arts organizations include:  Gastesi-Bezerra, the official piano-duo-in-residence at Palm Beach Atlantic University; Youth Speak Out International; Young Singers of the Palm Beaches; Locomotion Theater; Ballet Palm Beach; Music Educators Brass Ensemble and more.

“In the ever changing global economy in which we live, we are no longer focused on the three ‘Rs’ of Reading, Writing and ‘Rithmatic,” said Olga Vazquez, CCE’s new manager of in-house programs – a position created to oversee the new Discover Series. “Today’s educators are looking at the four ‘Cs’ – Critical thinking, Creativity, Collaboration and Communication. The arts naturally help develop the four C’s and the Discover Series is designed to improve these skills in students through direct instruction in the arts. Students will ‘discover’ their potential and passion for the arts – first through exposure to these fine and performing arts areas, and then through interactive workshops and guest performances. The opportunity for children at this age to receive instruction in a wide variety of art forms, and then to speak with professional artists from the community and decide which arts make them happy is completely unique and very exciting. There isn’t anything else like this program in Palm Beach County.”

The Discover Series completes the circle of arts education that the Center for Creative Education provides: arts-integrated curriculum, arts-enhanced curriculum and art as curriculum.  They have long been linking arts and academics in their “LEAP” program, in which a CCE teaching artist and a classroom teacher collaborate to teach the content of art and another subject.  Their after-school program, “CADRE”, uses art as a “hook” to reinforce classroom studies.  Now CCE’s Discover Series will offer instruction in “art for art’s sake”, allowing third graders to explore a range of art forms and decide what sparks their creativity.

For information and registration forms for CCE’s Discover Series, visit the Center for Creative Education’s website at cceflorida.org or call at 561.805.9927.

Gardens Brighten the Lives of Seniors

[West Palm Beach, FL] (April 28, 2014) – Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful, Inc. (KPBCB) has awarded a $1000 Great American Cleanup mini-grant to Villa Regina to install a butterfly garden using native plants that their senior residents can enjoy and maintain. Additional products and services to support the garden were also provided by Butterfly Plant Shop and Greenshades Lawn and Landscape Inc. – both in Palm Beach Gardens.

Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup is the country’s largest community improvement program that kicks off each spring and engages more than 4 million volunteers in more than 20,000 communities nationwide.

KPBCB, along with other organizations in Keep America Beautiful’s national network of community-based affiliates, have planned events structured to beautify parks, trails and recreation areas, clean shorelines and waterways, reduce waste and increase recycling, remove litter and debris, plant trees and build community gardens, among other events, to inspire generations of environmental stewards.

In awarding this grant, KPBCB understands the nurturing effect a garden can have and the improved physical and mental well-being that it can provide the senior residents of Villa Regina.  In addition, installation of a butterfly garden using native plants can help provide a habitat for pollinators such as bees and butterflies that are so important to the environment.

A ribbon cutting for the garden will take place on Monday, April 28 at 11:00 a.m. at Villa Regina, 2660 Haverhill Road N, West Palm Beach.

May, 2014 – Top Reasons to Do a Detox

Top Reasons to Do a Detox

By Sherri Mraz

A detox diet is designed to help rid the body of toxins and excess waste. It is imperative for a body to rid itself of the overload. It also helps to retrain your brain and your tastebuds.

This past October I spent a month pouring through research to come up with what I believed to be the perfect detox. I set my goal for three days. Being that I am a holistic health coach I eat clean on a regular basis, so I didn’t think it would be any big deal to do the detox. What I discovered shocked me. My diet may have been good but my body was not clean. I felt my body eliminating toxins during the three days. On the fourth day it was a revelation to feel my body lighter, and more vibrant. I was ecstatic when I had finished.

I began my career in nutrition in 2007 and at that point I was able to heal myself of hypoglycemia and asthma, but still suffered for years with chronic migraines. This was frustrating to me, as I thought I was doing everything right. I am happy to say that after the detox the migraines are gone.

Detox is usually done with the change of seasons. Now is the ideal time to do a spring detox.

Since October I have had almost a hundred people complete my detox program and virtually all of them have said they felt better afterwards.

Some of the benefits I see are:

  1. Eliminated stored wastes and weight loss.
  2. Improved vitality, energy levels and mental clarity.
  3. Improved circulation through purifying the liver, kidney and blood.
  4. You may stop bad eating habits, allowing your stomach to reduce to a normal size for weight control.
  5. People with heart problems may notice a more regular heartbeat
  6. Blood sugar and cholesterol lowered.
  7. Reduced Fatigue
  8. Reduced Bloating
  9. Eliminates Headaches and brain fog
  10. Reduces belly fat
  11. Reduced Joint Pain
  12. Eliminates Itchy Skin
  13. Eliminates Sleeplessness
  14. Safely rids your body of toxins
  15. Boosts your immune system & increases energy

Detoxification is a normal process, your body is constantly trying to neutralize and eliminate toxins through the major organs such as your colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymphs and skin. But, what if your self-cleaning system is overloaded and blocked up?

Research shows that detoxing may be the missing link to disease prevention, especially for immune-deficiency diseases like cancer, arthritis, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome and candida.

Even if you have a great diet, cleansing is the perfect way to boost your immune system and protect yourself from toxins with a good internal cleanse.

I guarantee you that you will feel so much better when you are finished. The best part is that you will be more mindful moving forward. You will definitely think twice before putting garbage into your body after a detox.

Three days is usually just long enough to get rid of sugar cravings and break caffeine addiction.

There is so much conflicting information out there. Everyday our emails are flooded with a new theory, (at least mine is) and the internet bombards us with information and offers. I believe you have to be wise these days and discern for yourselves what works. This is hard for people to do. That is where I come in, I teach people how to listen, really listen to their bodies, and mind. Together we create a healthy relationship with food, your thoughts and your core spiritual beliefs. Each and every person is a unique individual and has to be treated as such. There is no one right way to eat.

I have a huge passion for healthy eating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I teach my clients that it is not only the food we eat, which is super important, but how we eat and our feelings about food that matters. We are striving for homeostasis which can only be achieved when our body, mind and spirit are all being fed.

If you are struggling with health issues or are just looking to improve, email me and mention that you read this article and you will receive $25 off a consultation. I would love to have the opportunity to help you get to optimal health.

May, 2014 – Celebrating Mother’s Day

Celebrating Mother’s Day

By Gabrielle Harris

We’re all well aware of Mother’s Day. It comes around every year, and this year it comes on May 11th, in America to be specific. It’s a day to honor mothers for everything they do 365 days a year and to thank them for all that they do. Being a mother is nowhere near easy and the fact that some mothers are just so great at it means that the mothers deserve recognition for everything that they do.

There is no one way to thank the mothers that live on this Earth for providing a roof over our heads and food on our plates. But, there are some things that you can do to let them know that you love and appreciate them. For instance last year, I woke up earlier than my usual time, which is not an easy task, and even earlier than the time my mom wakes up. I decided that I was going to make my mom breakfast in bed. The breakfast was hectic when I discovered that my mom usually makes the pancakes, and I had no clue how to make them. So, this is when I turned to the one thing I knew that couldn’t let me down – Pinterest. Making pancakes shockingly isn’t as hard as it seems. I made the pancakes, did my best attempt at cutting them into hearts, and then neatly set them out on a plate waiting for my mom to wake from her slumber.

Breakfast in bed is just one of the many options for a mother’s day gift. It brought a smile to my mom’s face and it might just bring a smile to yours. Another gift idea for Mother’s Day can be as simple as getting your mother a bouquet of flowers or a well-written card thanking her for all she’s done. Personally, when I give out flowers to people I give it a do-it-yourself touch. Simply put them into a Mason jar, which can be purchased at most craft stores and outline the top of the Mason jar with lace and secure with hot glue. For a more fun way to make this vase would require paint and a pair of hands and the creativity of whoever is going to design the vase.

Gifts for children to give to mothers can be as easy as just making finger paintings of flowers on a piece of construction paper with the words printed “Love you mom!” or any personalized message.

Mothers Day gifts can be a variety of different things because of the vast majority of mothers who are different. There’s moms that love to cook, moms that love sports, moms that dance, and moms that are just there for you whenever you need someone to talk to.

“Mothers hold their children’s hands for a short while, but their hearts forever.”

Thinking about it, I haven’t even put into thought what I’m getting my mom for Mother’s Day. Give your mother something to remember and to celebrate her for all that she does!

COVERT CIA OPERATIONS OFFICER TO SPEAK AT ANNUAL LUNCHEON

Former Agent Valerie Plame and Philanthropist Frances Fisher Featured At Awards Luncheon
West Palm Beach, FL, April 23, 2014 – Executive Women of the Palm Beaches has announced this year’s keynote speaker is former CIA Operations Officer, Valerie Plame. “We are elated to have a speaker with such a dynamic story,” said Co-Chair of the event Natalie Alvarez, Market Manager and Vice President for the Southeast Florida region of First Southern Bank, of the luncheon. “This annual awards program recognizes exemplary women in Palm Beach County who have demonstrated extraordinary achievements and leadership; Valerie’s story complements these women.”
As a covert CIA Operations Officer, Valerie Plame worked to protect America’s national security and prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Without warning, in 2003 she found herself at the heart of a political firestorm when senior White House and State Department officials revealed her secret status to several national journalists – including a syndicated conservative newspaper columnist who published her name.
Since her covert identity was compromised, Plame has become a public advocate and respected authority on issues of national security, nuclear proliferation, and politics. She is the author of the New York Times best-selling memoir Fair Game: My Life as a Spy, My Betrayal by the White House, which was released as a major motion picture of the same name, and Blowback which was released in October 2013.
Honorary chair for the annual Women In Leadership Awards luncheon is Palm Beach philanthropist, Frances Fisher. “Frances is an extraordinary woman whose kindness has touched us all,” said Co-Chair of the event Charlotte Pelton, President of Charlotte Pelton and Associates, Inc. “Through our Foundation, Frances has funded a scholarship for Palm Beach Atlantic University students.”
Frances Fisher is a dedicated volunteer, advocate and supporter of many charitable organizations in Palm Beach County. She has served in numerous leadership roles in the last 16 years for local organizations including the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, Ryan Licht Sang Bipolar Foundation, Norton Museum of Art, Center for Family Services, YWCA Harmony House, and Historical Society of Palm Beach County. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, Hearing the Ovarian Cancer Whisper, and Palm Beach Day Academy. She is the Founding Chairman of the newly formed Gardens Conservancy at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens and co-chairman of Great Expectations Capital Campaign at Palm Beach Day Academy.  Her outstanding service to the community was recognized by Palm Beach Atlantic University with the “Woman of Distinction” Award in 2006.
Prior to moving to Palm Beach, Ms. Fisher was appointed to serve in the West Wing of the White House as a Special Assistant to the Counsel for President George H.W. Bush and member of the First Lady Advance Team for Barbara Bush. Mrs. Fisher is the co-founder of the National Environmental Policy Institute in Washington, D.C.
The Women in Leadership Awards program raises funds to help promising young women in our community pursue their dream of a college education, and supports the Lois Kwasman Grant for Community Impact. The Grant is awarded to an organization whose work makes a profound difference in the lives of girls and young women in the community.
The luncheon, which is one of the county’s most successful community events, will be held this year on May 1st at the Kravis Center’s Cohen Pavilion. CBS 12 News Anchor, Liz Quirantes is this year’s Emcee, and sponsors for the event includes:  Presenting: Florida Power & Light; Sponsor Underwriter: The Gardens Conservancy at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens; and Grand Benefactors: PANDORA™ Stores, and PNC Bank; Patron Sponsors: Susan L.
