Murder Mystery Dinner Returns to Wellington November 3rd

Murder mystery dinner theater is back by popular demand in Wellington, and this time, it’s all hands on deck for swashbuckling, pirate-themed entertainment! Dress in your buccaneer best for this deadly adult dinner show on Saturday, November 3rd from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Village Park located at 11700 Pierson Road. The evening begins with a social hour and dinner but steers into deadly waters as a shipload of professional actors portray a “murder on the high seas” scenario. Audience members will then be asked to solve the crime and identify the killer.

Tickets cost $40 per person and are on sale now at Village Park and the Wellington Community Center. A table of eight can also be reserved for a discounted price of $280. The ticket price includes dinner, beer, and wine. Because this is an adult themed event, Wellington will provide free on-site child care for children ages 5 to 12 only, including pizza and plenty of fun activities. The child care room will be separate from the event.

All of Wellington’s murder mystery dinner theater events have sold out, so don’t be marooned – reserve your seats today!

The Omphoy Spa – Sumptuous on Every Level

By Frannie Sheridan

Most of us have had the frustrating experience of having paid for fantastic high-end procedures that were administered by cranky estheticians or masseurs, have been met by less than welcoming receptionists, and been overcharged for services. A spa experience where one comes not only to relax and be vulnerable but to be rejuvenated, must be holistically satisfying or it ends up being about as nourishing as the flue! I’m delighted to report that my experience at The Spa at the Omphoy was deeply satisfying. All parts and players worked together in a glorious symphony of external and internal beauty!

I came to obtain their signature facial, which is called the Hydra Facial. I was greeted by an upbeat gracious young woman, who told me that I would be attended to shortly. She offered me a drink while I waited in the Omphoy Spa’s lounge. I thoroughly enjoyed sipping tea while sitting on a comfy sofa, serenaded by the tinkle of a rhythmic waterfall, in the calming Asian themed lounge infused with exotic stone sculpture and surrounded by soothing ocean blue glass paneling.

Within minutes, I was ushered into the procedure room by Linda, my gracious European-trained esthetician. She offered me a cover up and suggested I recline on the heated bed as she began the process. This talented lady, applied state of the art machinery to my face, nimbly vacuuming my pores, and massaging my skin with fingers that literally danced across my face in some high tech massage pattern. A technique which is unique to the Hydra Facial is that the pores are simultaneously being cleaned and hydrated, so there is no downtime. And unlike dermabrasion, the process is noninvasive.

One happy Omphoy spa customer

Although Linda checked in from time to time to see if I was experiencing any discomfort, I felt absolutely none.

A skin plumper called Dermabuilder was used during the treatment. Afterwards, I actually looked like I’d had Juvaderm or Botox injections. My skin was plumped up in all the spots that needed to be and I glowed like a healthy pink-faced teenager, even though I’m practically seven hundred and fifty! As somebody who never leaves the house without a little something-something on make-up-wise, for the first time in years, I resisted dampening my dewy youthful look with an ounce of make-up!

My Omphoy Spa experience was sumptuous on every level. Guess what all my lucky girlfriends are getting for their birthdays?

This Palm Beach SpaDiva has the dreaded job of being waited on hand and foot by masseuses, facialists, pedicurists and other skilled spa employees. She then wets our appetites by reviewing the most sumptuous of their services. When she isn’t being pampered, she siphons her 20+ years experience performing solo shows internationally and locally; Confessions Of A Jewish Shiksa…Dancing On Hitler’s Grave!(The Kravis Center Oct 28), The H-Word(The Arsht Center/Next@19th Nov.5), I Tried To Be Normal But It Was Taken(The Beat Cup/Delray Nov. 8) www.franniesheridan.com. November, 2012 – The New American Dream

Dare To Dream

The New American Dream

By D. Gatekeeper

Hello Dreamers!

With the presidential election right around the corner, there are many issues on top of mind for many people. The middle class and the American dream are some of those very issues. They both go hand and hand with each other.

Once upon a time, all one needed to secure the foundation for this ideal dream was to receive a college diploma (there are many ways one can achieve a dream but going to college was the one that was guaranteed) and they were on their way to achieving a better quality of life. In today’s world, that guarantee is no longer written in stone.

In this brave new world, it is up to each individual to take responsibility for their life and navigate it to the desired destination. This concept is opposite of what we witness in today’s culture at large. We become complacent with the status quo and go on auto pilot through life. With this type of mindset, someone’s life is bound to stay the same and never aspire to knowing other people, places, or things. If you want that new American dream, you are going to have to fight for it and make it happen. However, the key is not to lose sight of what is important and lose focus. Besides, half the fun is the journey and the people you share it with.

“Everything in life is a choice. You can choose to be happy, you can choose to take a proactive stance and get your autonomy back. You are driving the bus.”

–Caryn Beth Rosenthal

Afterthought: In these times of uncertainty, it is even more important to stay dialed into the life that you desire. There are many things that can distract us and consume our time until we become stuck in a monotonous routine. The white picket fence might not be the ideal standard that everyone once aspired to, but that doesn’t mean new ideals can’t be created and obtained. A new American dream is out there if you Dare to Dream.

Maya the Jaguar to Celebrate Fourth Birthday at the Palm Beach Zoo

maya_the_jaguar_-_palm_beach_zoo2_-_photo_by_budge_jamison-pr

WEST PALM BEACH, FL., October 24, 2012 – The Palm Beach Zoo has announced plans to celebrate the fourth birthday of Maya the jaguar on Sunday, October 28th from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. Guests in attendance will be able to make a birthday card at the Jaguar Craft Station located under the Tulé Tree in the Zoo’s Mayan Plaza.  All children making a card for Maya will receive a special Halloween-themed gift from the birthday girl. Completed cards will then be displayed in front of the Zoo’s Jaguar Habitat throughout the duration of the event.  At 11:30 A.M. there will be a special Jaguar Talk, featuring Maya, where visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about jaguars and jaguar conservation

A virtual baby book will be created and available for viewing on the Zoo’s Facebook Fan page (https://www.facebook.com/palmbeachzoo1301) showing photos of Maya since her birth. Visitors to the Zoo’s Facebook page may tag or post photos of Maya that they have taken over the years to include in the album. The Zoo will also be accepting photos of Maya from supporters not on Facebook via email at [email protected]. Additional information regarding the virtual baby book is available at http://tinyurl.com/mayababyalbum.

Maya was born on October 28, 2008 to parents Nabalam and Muchacho, both of whom still reside at the Palm Beach Zoo. Maya currently weighs 100 pounds and like all jaguars at the Palm Beach Zoo, is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP), of which the Zoo’s own Keith Lovett is the Vice-Chair. Any plans for Maya’s future, including possible breeding opportunities, will be determined by the SSP to ensure a viable and genetically healthy population. Maya earned the nickname of “Diva” early on due to her love of attention and her high levels of mischievous playfulness. Zoo staff members say she continues to live up to that reputation to this day.

Maya’s Birthday Celebration will take place during Boo at the Zoo, which is scheduled from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, October 26th – 28th and on Friday evening (10/26) from 5:30 – 9:00 P.M. For more information on Boo at the Zoo, please visit www.palmbeachzoo.org.

November, 2012 – Candy War!

CANDY WAR!

By Cheryl Alker

It actually occurred to me the other day why I love this time of year so much, and it wasn’t just that the weather is starting to change and we can all finally take a walk without needing a cold shower and a change of clothes on our return, but it is all the wonderful food that the next few months will bring!

The first big temptation and spoke in the wheel of any well intentioned diet plan has got to be the Halloween candy that your cupboards are no doubt overflowing with as we speak.  Are there any good guys in amongst all the bad?  Well here at Around Wellington, we would like to provide you with some basic facts so you can make a more educated decision before you pop that candy in your mouth. Here’s how to survive the first round of the Holiday temptations, let the battle begin!

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups v Snickers?

Winner: Snickers

Even though Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups actually have more protein in the fun size equivalent of the two brands, Snickers contain less fat, less saturated fat and 10 fewer calories per two pieces.

Peanut M&M’s v Skittles?

Winner: Peanut M&M’s

Skittles have only 61 calories per snack-size bag, compared to 90 in Peanut M&M’s but peanut M&M’s release their sugar slowly into your bloodstream and will satisfy longer. Skittles will spike your blood sugar and leave you craving more. Almond M&M’s are also a good choice as almonds are well-known for lowering cholesterol and the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Twix v Kit Kat?

Winner: Kit Kat

While neither of these treats offer any great nutritional benefits, a Kit Kat will save you 20 calories and rack up less saturated fat and sodium. In fact, Twix packs three times the sodium, 90 milligrams, in three fun size pieces than you would get in a comparable serving of Kit Kat.

Candy Corn v Tootsie Rolls?

Winner: Neither

At 20 million pounds consumed annually, candy corn wins the popularity contest, but in the nutrition competition, this one’s a draw. Though you would need to eat 26 pieces of candy corn to rack up the same number of calories, 140, as in 6 Tootsie Rolls, both candies contain artificial color and flavor. Vegetarians should go for Tootsie Rolls, however, since candy corn contains gelatin (an animal by-product).

Butterfinger v York Peppermint?

Winner: York Peppermint Patty

Two fun-size Butterfingers will cost you 200 calories, 8 grams of fat, and 100 milligrams of sodium. Meanwhile, three mini York Peppermints have 150 calories, 3 grams of fat, and 15 milligrams of sodium. Another plus with the York Peppermint is that when someone has a strong mint flavor they are not likely to go back for more because it would ruin the flavor of another piece of candy.

Starburst v Jolly Rancher?

Winner: Jolly Rancher

While Starburst candies win the calorie comparison (43 calories in three pieces as opposed to 70 calories for three Jolly Ranchers), there is a significant benefit with the Jolly Rancher in the fact that it takes longer to suck on and finish it, and you are therefore not likely to eat three in a row. On the other hand it is almost impossible not to eat more than three Starbursts at one time and still be coming back for more.  Starbursts are also far more likely to stick to your teeth, which can raise your risk of developing cavities.

Smarties v Sweetarts?

Winner: Smarties

Smarties have about half the calories and sugar of an equivalent serving of Sweetarts (25 calories and 5 grams of sugar per one of those little Smarties rolls compared to 50 calories and 13 grams of sugar for eight Sweetarts). Smarties are also smaller, so it feels like you get more, and they take longer to eat.

Milky Way v PayDay?

Winner: Milky Way

Milky Way has less than 50 percent of the fat and sodium for two fun-size pieces. The peanuts in a PayDay obviously do offer some heart-healthy benefits, but they also come with 90 milligrams of sodium and 9 grams of fat.

Almond Joy v Mounds?

Winner: Neither

These chocolate-and-coconut delights are basically twins, weighing in at 80 calories per fun-size bar with an equivalent amount of fat (4.5 grams), saturated fat (3 grams), and carbohydrates (10 grams). The Almond Joy does have the added benefit of the healthy Almond, but really this battle would ultimately boil down to preference.

Caramel Apple v Candy Apple?

Winner: Candy Apple

These Fall treats are both winners in a way, because they’ve got fiber and vitamins under those sugary disguises. But caramel is made with butter as well as sugar, which boosts its calorie and fat content. In contrast, a typical medium-sized candy apple will run 70 fewer calories than a caramel apple, and it contains no fat.

So there you have it, happy hunting, and if your favorite isn’t listed above, let this be a rule of thumb, if you LOVE them so much and know that once you start you won’t be able to stop then it’s definitely not a winner for you and should be avoided at all costs!
