December, 2012 – Palm Beach PlayMakers Appear in BOXer SHORTS at Delray Beach Playhouse

boxershorts

(Delray Beach, FL – December 17, 2012) Newly formed playwriting collaborative, Palm Beach PlayMakers, is pleased to announce its debut production, BOXer SHORTS, a showcase of original 10-minute plays to be presented at the Delray Beach Playhouse on Saturday, December 29 at 2:00 P.M.

The use of stackable boxes to suggest scenic elements and visual movement, will set the stage for the six brief plays, which feature dynamic characters with exceptional chemistry and unique stories to tell. Playwrights Todd Caster and Lisa Bankert each contribute three pieces that toggle between comedy and drama, sometimes blending the two genres in unexpected fashion. Each play includes a cast of 2-3 characters, one holiday theme, and one specific “mystery object” that audiences will be challenged to identify during a talk-back panel discussion with the Palm Beach PlayMakers following the performance.

Playwright Todd Caster serves as director to two of the six plays and is joined by fellow directors who are also award-winning actors, Michael DeGrotta and Richard Zavaglia. The cast includes well-known South Florida stage veterans DeGrotta, Michael Beecher, Marcie Hall, Jim McConville and Catherine Windecker. Rounding out the cast are local stage actors Calvin Bankert, Susan Emley, Eric Salas, Thomas Spencer, Cindy Thagard, Dan Thagard and Isabella Werber.

The BOXer SHORTS line-up includes:

AMERICAN DREAMER  (written & directed by Todd Caster) –  It’s Thanksgiving dinner and an opportune time for Daniel to introduce Bobby to his bride-to-be, Sasha. With Daniel in the kitchen, Sasha and Bobby get acquainted, clear the air and learn a few things in the process.

CHILLERS (written by Lisa Bankert & directed by Richard Zavaglia) – Grocery stock boy Conrad becomes an unwitting human shield for the recently-jilted Barbara, who fears a run-in with her ex-boyfriend during a New Year’s Eve shopping errand. But what exactly is Barbara hiding from on this day of auld lang syne?

COLD HANDS, WARM HEARTS (written & directed by Todd Caster) – Two lovers take refuge in a rustic shack after a blizzard has left them snowbound on the way to their Valentine’s Day destination.

CUTS (written by Lisa Bankert & directed by Michael DeGrotta) – There are just four hours left before the holiday hiatus, and the slings and arrows are flying fast between a jaded leading lady and her ingénue scene partner, until they discover common ground on the pages of a lackluster script.

THE SIGNPOSTS OF PROVIDENCE (written by Todd Caster & directed by Richard Zavaglia) – Hannah and Ellis were lovers when they were in college and haven’t seen each other since their bad break-up following a 4th of July weekend years ago. Now Hannah is the mother of one of Ellis’ students and the two unsuspectingly reunite for a parent/teacher meeting in Ellis’ office.

UPSHOT(written by Lisa Bankert & directed by Michael DeGrotta) – While searching for their misplaced Buick, two university students stumble upon a cantankerous cloaked figure perched on a park bench in the wee hours of an eerie Halloween morning.

Tickets are $10 and can be reserved through the Delray Beach Playhouse Box Office by calling 561-272-1281 ext 4.

Local Walmart Hosts Red Kettles & “Fill the Truck” Toy Drive to Support The Salvation Army

Initiative to Help Provide a Cheerful Christmas to Local Children

West Palm Beach, Florida (December 3, 2012) – Walmart and The Salvation Army announced today that they are partnering this Christmas season to help provide new toys and coats to local children on Christmas as part of the 122nd Annual Red Kettle Campaign. The “Fill the Truck” toy drive will be hosted at:

          Walmart Store # 1589 (16205 S Military Trail, Delray Beach, FL 33484)

          Walmart Store # 2176 (2144 W Indiantown Road, Jupiter, FL 33458)

          Walmart Store # 5882 (2765 10th Avenue N, Palm Springs, FL 33461)

along with more than 2,500 other Walmart stores across the country, on Saturday, December 8, 2012.

In addition, Walmart and Sam’s Club stores will host The Salvation Army’s iconic red kettles and bell ringers this holiday season from Friday, November 23 to Monday, December 24, to collect much-needed funds to support the Army’s social service at Christmas and year-round. Last year in Palm Beach County, Walmart and Sam’s Club stores helped The Salvation Army raise $305,000 locally, and more than $46 million nationally—nearly one-third of the record $147.6 million raised. All donations made to the red kettles will remain in Palm Beach County, and help The Salvation Army provide food, clothing, shelter, financial assistance and other services to thousands of people a year.

The “Fill the Truck” event will begin at 9:00 a.m. and run until 5:00 p.m. EST on Saturday, December 8, and is open to the general public who would like to donate new toys and coats to children who take part in The Salvation Army programs year-round. Upon arrival, shoppers will receive a list of suggested gifts to help fill the truck at the store. Once the donation receptacle is full, The Salvation Army will bring the donations to West Palm Beach, Lake Worth and Boca Raton and distribute the gifts to local children in need. The collection is expected to provide gifts to more than 6,000 children.

“This holiday season, we’re proud to work with The Salvation Army and help provide basic need items like food and clothes to our neighbors in need,”, Sylvia Mathews Burwell, president of the Walmart Foundation. “With strong support from our generous shoppers, we know we can bring smiles to more children this Christmas.”

This year, the Walmart Foundation also made a $1 million donation to The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. The donation will be split among the four Salvation Army Territories and support feeding programs, including meal programs for youths. Last year, The Salvation Army helped serve more than 125,000 meals to local children and adults in need.

Notably, 81 percent of Salvation Army programs saw an increase in need from families with children due to the recession in 2011, according to “Growing up in a Downturn,” a Salvation Army report from earlier this year. The report also found that 56 percent of Salvation Army youth programs were operating at or beyond capacity, which includes feeding, education, athletic, artistic and religious programs. As a result of the recession’s lingering impact, The Salvation Army expects the need to continue with this Christmas season.

“The Salvation Army is excited to partner with Walmart. Each year, Walmart is there to help us meet demands and provide a special Christmas to families and individuals who may not otherwise have a Christmas to celebrate,” said Major Thomas McWilliams, Area Commander for Palm Beach County.

From its humble origin as a fundraiser started by a Salvation Army captain in San Francisco in 1891, the Red Kettle Campaign has grown into one of the most recognizable and important charitable campaigns in the United States. As part of the campaign, more than 25,000 Salvation Army workers and volunteers spread throughout the country to ring bells daily and solicit spare change donations to the iconic red kettles from holiday shoppers. In 2011, the campaign raised more than $147.6 million nationwide, a new record supported by the public’s nickels, dimes, quarters, dollars, and credit cards (and the occasional diamond ring or gold tooth) all collected and used to help people in the communities where they were raised. Last year, the funds helped The Salvation Army provide food, clothing, toys and other assistance to 30 million Americans in need.

Wellington, FL, december 9, 2012: Six students from Genbu-Kai Karate recently tested and advanced to their first 10th kyu (level) ranking. A journey that will take them at least 4 years, before being potentially invited to test for their first black belt level. Most traditional Japanese Martial Art Dojo (schools) start ranking at either 10th, or 9th kyu and progresses through to 1st kyu. Time between ranks slows down as the student advances. This is to make sure the students not only retain and comprehend the physical requirements of their training, but also the mental aspects, including improvement in maturity levels.

Today, martial arts schools offer a variety of color belts to denote different rankings. Typically, white, yellow and orange belts denote beginner students; purple and green belts denote intermediates; and blue, brown and red denote advanced students. Usually, stripes are added either within the belt itself, or as tips on the end of the belts for additional kyu ranking. In our schools, red belts are reserved for our junior black belts (7-12). Being these students typically do not achieve the required maturity levels, as required for our adult students.

Genbu-Kai Karate teaches traditional Shito-Ryu Karate, and not only emphasizes self defense, but also incorporates methods in preventing bullying either at school or other social encounters. Most importantly, Genbu-Kai Karate teaches valuable life skills which students learn to incorporate in their school, family and social lives respectfully. Conveniently located next to the Wellington movie theater, Genbu-Kai Karate offers the finest in traditional Japanese martial arts in Palm Beach County. All ages are welcome to come in and try one complimentary week. For more information, please call 561.804.1002 or visit our website at www.floridagenbukai.com.
