YWCA Launches “Start with the Y” Breakfast Series on Critical Issues for Women – First Breakfast October 16 Features Naomi E.  Ackerman Play Addressing Domestic Abuse

For Immediate Release – September 27, 2013. The YWCA of Palm Beach County is pleased to announce the inaugural breakfast of a four-part series to be held on Wednesday, October 16, 2013, 7:30 a.m., at the Airport Hilton Conference Center, 150 Australian Avenue, West Palm Beach.

The event will feature nationally-known actress, educator and activist Naomi E. Ackerman who will present her one-woman show, Flowers Aren’t Enough, which she wrote, directed and has performed around the world.  The play addresses the topic of domestic abuse, an appropriate theme for October, National Domestic Violence Month.

The Event Sponsor is FPL, and the Coffee Sponsor is A-1 Moving and Storage.

“We are so excited to begin this series that will educate and inform the community about issues critical to women of all ages,” said Gayle A. Landen, YWCA Board President.

Upcoming dates and topics for future breakfasts in the series include:

  • January 1, 2014 — racial justice through the eyes of a panel of intergenerational local women to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday;
  • March 12, 2014 — landmark moments in women’s history to highlight Women’s History Month; and
  • May 12, 2014 — human trafficking:  modern day slavery.

All breakfasts will be held at the Airport Hilton Conference Center with registration at 7:30 and the program at 8:00 a.m.

Proceeds from these events will support the programs of the YWCA including:  Harmony House, a 63-bed shelter for abused women and their children; two Child Development Centers; transitional housing for homeless women and their families; and Y-Girls, a leadership and mentoring program for girls ages 8-13.
