Does your Career Affect Your Health?

By Sherri Mraz

Have you considered how your career affects your overall health? Did you know your career is another component of the body, mind, and spirit connection?

Think about it: you spend 8-10 hours a day, 5 days a week at work. Chances are you spend more time with your coworkers than anyone else in your life. Many of us wear stress as a badge of honor, convinced that productivity requires endless turmoil.

Even if you work for yourself as an entrepreneur you still must take time to honor yourself. Working for yourself does not naturally go hand in hand with good self-care.

As Lori Greiner said, “Entrepreneurs are the only people who work 80 hour weeks to avoid working 40 hour weeks.”

A harmonious and supportive healthy work-life balance is achievable.

Visualizing what’s important and rewarding yourself are great ways to maximize productivity when deadlines are tight and your workload is heavy.

To brighten your space:

  • Bring a picture of a loved one or your child’s artwork to keep on your desk at work.
  • Brighten your space with fresh flowers.
  • Stock your desk with luxurious teas as a treat.
  • Take five minutes each day to de-clutter your space – a clear desk promotes a clear mind.
  • Add spa-like touches, add your favorite color, and maybe an essential oil
  • Try a mid-day stretching exercise to aid circulation and promote relaxation.

Although the modern work world is challenging, it is filled with opportunities. Doing work you love is essential to creating a healthy, balanced life.

According to the title of the book, ”Do What You Love, The Money Will Follow: Discovering Your Right Livelihood,” by Marsha Sinetar, says it best. You must have a feeling of worth from what you do.

There is never a day that I don’t love my work. Sometimes the world of technology makes it more challenging when there are long hours on the computer, but when I ask myself what I would do if given a new opportunity, I would always choose what I am doing.
