Susan G. Komen Reaches Metastatic Breast Cancer Community in Innovative Ways During Pandemic

Although COVID-19 has created an unprecedented disruption, Susan G. Komen has found ways to serve the women and men who need them most. The organization recently launched a virtual Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) Impact Series to share the latest scientific discoveries improving breast cancer treatments, information that those fighting this disease are desperate for.

It is estimated that an estimated 154,000 women in the U.S. and a countless number of men are living with metastatic breast cancer – the most advanced stage of breast cancer that has spread outside the breast, often to the brain, bones, liver and lungs. Currently, there is no cure for metastatic breast cancer, and it is responsible for almost all the 42,000 breast cancer deaths in the U.S. each year.

Having up-to-the-minute information and support for facing the unique challenges and concerns of living with MBC available is more critical than ever. With concerns about visiting doctors and going out in public any more than you have to, the organization added extra layers of protection for its immunocompromised constituency by bringing this information to them in the comfort and safety of their own home.

“We believe that our present and future situations will allow us to drive even more impact for more people than ever before. Accessible technology and an increased desire to find new ways to fight MBC is something that impacts the lives of more than 154,000 women and an unknown number of men in the U.S.,” shared Kate Watt, Regional Vice President, Development Southeast for Susan G. Komen. “We are growing our digital footprint to ensure that even though we cannot be with our Susan G. Komen family in person, we can gather together virtually to continue moving forward.”

In the past, community-based events connected people living with MBC, and their caregivers, with the latest research and medical news, information on complementary therapies, and community support. The organization has added event live streams to ensure people unable to attend in person could still benefit from the information pertinent to their health. In the last twelve months, Komen has hosted 52 live events, including 26 conferences, 16 educational events, six retreats, and numerous Facebook Live sessions/webinars/online learning series. This new MBC Impact Series is available at no cost and will be accessible to all.

“Komen works with partners in thousands of communities to unlock the scientific discoveries and deliver the support needed to help people with MBC,” added Watt. “We are excited to present this regularly-updated listing of virtual events and speakers and have nearly a dozen events in this series already scheduled.”

Susan G. Komen’s Metastatic Breast Cancer Impact Series begins on Wednesday, September 12th and runs through Sunday, November 15th. A full schedule is available on the new https://mbc.komen.org/#mbc-impact-series website.

“In this increasingly interconnected world, events like our MBC Impact Series enable us to meet people where they live and access care. Working together, we will achieve our goal of reducing breast cancer deaths by 50% by 2026,” ended Watt.

Wellington Moms Bring the Children’s Series “The Adventures of Lucky” to Life

Wellington Moms Bring the Children’s Series “The Adventures of Lucky” to Life

An Interview with Andrea Brockman

Here in Wellington a talented family, two sisters and their mom, collaborated to create an interactive children’s book series. We interviewed Andrea Brockman, who handled the concept and design details of the books.  Her sister Jamie Edelson handles the business side of the project.  And their mother, Barbara Jackson, a former school teacher, is the author of the stories.

AW: Tell us about the inspiration for “The True Story of Lucky.”

AB: In the summer of 1992, my sister brought Lucky, her FAVORITE stuffed animal, on a family vacation, and he went missing! He got twisted in the bedsheets and washed with the hotel’s laundry. After many tears, he was found and they were reunited! This true story was the inspiration for our series and is retold in our first book, Lucky’s Island Adventure. When my daughter, now 5, was a baby, we were playing with some toys and I wished there was a book that went along with them. My mom and I immediately came up with many ideas, and then it hit us, Lucky was the perfect character to tie them all together! The Adventures of Lucky® was born!

AW: How many books do you anticipate having in the series?

AB: Our first two books, Lucky’s Island Adventure and Lucky’s Outer Space Adventure are available now. Lucky’s Farm Adventure is coming soon, and there is a holiday one in the works. My mom has written many more, and each is just as cute as the next. Lucky is always getting into some sort of mischief, and there are endless possibilities for his adventures. We have BIG plans for Lucky!

AW: Why is reading a book with your preschoolers so important for parents to do?

AB: From birth, it is so important that we read to our children. It helps them with language, development, and is wonderful bonding time. Snuggled up and reading together are some of my favorite and most precious moments with my children. My mom was a preschool teacher for over 20 years, and has made the stories interactive and educational, including sight words, counting, and modes of transportation. Lucky is a fun and lovable character we know you and your little one will enjoy!

AW: Tell us about your background, your Mom’s and your sister’s.

AB: My mom is our author and our rock! She retired from teaching preschool to help watch my daughter (and now her 3 other grandchildren). She has always had a love for teaching, and that passion shines through in all she does, including each of her books.

My sister was the inspiration for our series, and manages most of the business side of things. She has a background in marketing and management, and worked in retail management for many years.

As a Physician Assistant in Family Medicine, I have always had a passion for science, learning, and helping people. Developing the concept and many of the design details for The Adventures of Lucky® has allowed me to indulge my creative side as well.

AW: And how has it been working together on a project like this?

AB: It is a dream come true to be working together on a project that is so dear to our hearts. The many ups and downs of this journey have been softened and celebrated by our strength together. We each bring different talents and personalities, which make us productive and effective, and of course, our mom really helps hold everything together! She always had a longing to write children’s books and we work hard to help share Lucky with the world.

AW: What’s something you love about Wellington?

AB: I have lived in Wellington for 9 years, and practiced medicine here for that long as well. My family loves going to the parks and all the wonderful events the city offers, especially the Lakeside and Holiday events, Food Trucks, and Saturday Night Lights. Wellington has a sense of family and community, which gives it an almost small-town feel.

AW: Where are the books available?

AB: Building The Adventures of Lucky® from the ground up, starting in our local community and spreading out from there, has been part of our mission and business plan. We launched right before the pandemic, so just like everyone else, we have had to make some adjustments. The book sets are available on our website, TheAdventuresofLucky.com. Also, thanks to a warm reception and wonderful community support, we are excited to be in a number of local businesses, including Schaefer Drugs Wellington, The Breakers Palm Beach, Cardsmart in Lake Worth, Pineapple Kidz in Palm Beach Gardens, Hand’s Office and Art Supply in Delray Beach, Little Town Play in Delray Beach, and a number of others, with many more to come.

AW: Tell us about the packaging and the plush toys – that come with each book.

AB: We wanted the packaging to be cute, colorful, and convenient, so each set comes in a carrying case with a removeable and customizable luggage tag for any little adventurer. They each include 3 interactive plush toys:  Lucky (dressed for his adventure), his mode of transportation, and another element from the story. The toys squeak, rattle, or crinkle, which again help the child engage more with the story and capture the attention of even the littlest of readers.

AW: Tell us about your family.

AB: My sister and I each have two young children, and we are blessed to have the help and support of our wonderful husbands and parents. Life can be very hectic, but family always comes first. We love a good family competition, travelling together, going to the beach, and our favorite family tradition is our big Sunday night dinners. Being a mom, working, and starting a business is hard work, but with the help of each other we keep smiling, laughing, and growing.

AW: Anything else you’d like to add?

AB: Giving back to our community has been important to us from the beginning. Prior to the pandemic, we volunteered at the Quantum House, a wonderful foundation for children and their families. There, we read stories, played, and did crafts with the remarkable children. We hope to go back there and to Children’s hospitals when restrictions are lifted.

Also, your support is much appreciated, you can follow us on Facebook and Instagram @theadventuresof_lucky to check out the latest with Lucky.

We hope Lucky finds a loving place in your homes and hearts as he has in ours for many, many years!

8 Proofs That Social Media Can Seriously Harm Your Mental Health

8 Proofs That Social Media Can Seriously Harm Your Mental Health

By Michael Gorman

Keeping your mental health under control is a very important part of functioning well as a human being. Thus, it is important to understand the pros and cons of behavioral tactics that can lead to positive or negative impacts on your health. While social media is a useful tool most times, it can have a serious impact on the long-time well-being of certain individuals. Health experts, psychologists, nutritionists, and psychiatrists all agree on one thing; that social media can become quite damaging for society as a whole, if not used properly. Today, we will discuss some of the most important reasons why social media can affect mental health – and how we can stay aware of these issues.

  1. Social media can become addictive

Social media can become addictive because it has the environment to thrive in. Its role in this digital era is extensive; with the Internet being used anywhere and everywhere at a super-low price, content can be loaded way easier than ever. This causes social media to be the number one rising trend on the market. Let’s be honest: social media is available wherever you go, with (almost) whomever you interact with.

Because of the tools that social media is using (e.g. ‘Like’ button for Facebook or the heart button for Instagram), people are contributing to the system to the point of addiction. They want to post about their affairs, travels, marriage statuses, etc., yet most times, these so-called life adventures are less gleeful in real life than they seem to be in pictures. Just as freelancers need essay writing reviews to prove that their work is worth it, social media addicts need approval from their social media friends to live a seemingly “happy” life. But an inflated ego can cause further addiction and serious brain damage to a certain extent.

  1. It triggers sad feelings instead of happiness

The more we scroll on social media, the less happy we become. This is because social media platforms such as Facebook or Instagram trigger a perception of social isolation in a different sense than other solitary activities do. For instance, painting or writing are solitary activities that require movement, creativity, and joy. They take something abstract and express it in the real form; people who take up on such activities can become more creative and joyful as a result. On the other hand, social media, even if a solitary activity, doesn’t bring any real benefits. Online interactions are not real, communication is not authentic, and social isolation protrudes. Research shows that the more people spend their time on these social media platforms, the more isolated they perceive themselves to be.

  1. Comparison is not healthy

One of the reasons why social media makes users feel isolated and alone is because it is a “perfect” tool for comparison. People fall into the bad habit and routine of comparing themselves to others and then, drawing conclusions on those comparisons. Scrolling through your Facebook feed doesn’t help at all with this issue. In fact, it only makes it worse. Users are now starting to use online assignment help services to develop better bios and descriptions to generate jealousy onto others. This cannot be healthy.

Studies have long shown that human beings will always try to compare themselves to other human beings in one way or another, and this can lead to serious brain imbalance and depression; having a platform that enhances these feelings of isolation is not at all beneficial for any of us.

  1. Jealousy can be damaging

It is easily inferred that comparison leads to jealousy, which can lead to further comparison and thus, jealousy. This never-ending cycle can be damaging for many reasons yet one of the most important ones is negative attitudes toward others. When we are jealous of other people, it means that we want what they have; we want more than we own. And we want it because we are not satisfied with where we are. This is not a damaging concept if handled smartly. However, most people in the social media community do not stop here.

“They don’t understand that they are lacking something, and then, go on to start reinventing their lives. Instead, they wish harm to others and develop negative attitudes based on fear,” argues Christina Palfrey, law essay writing service expert. This can seriously damage relationships of all kinds and pose further conflicts between individuals. Jealousy will, in turn, lead to sadness, which can further accentuate our need for belonging. As you can see, now we’re back to social isolation again, which is one of the worst mental health issues to be experienced.

  1. Social media feeds into our illusions

The worst thing about social media is that it gives out the illusory impression that it might actually be helpful. That is because our instant gratification needs are fed while we scroll or post on it. Social media functions like a drug – the more constantly we use it, the more constantly we’ll want it. When we are held back from having it, we want it even more. It is crazy how illusionary this online world can be yet how desperate we are to be part of it.

  1. Loneliness vs. popularity

We might think that having numerous friends on social media makes us more popular, but this is just another delusion we feed into. Having more friends on social media doesn’t mean you have a better social life; it means you’re actually spending more time making friends on these platforms than you do in real life, which makes you a rather lonelier individual. It takes real social interaction to connect with people from around the world and expand connections. Feeling like you are “social” on Facebook or Instagram does not make you social in the true sense of the word. This illusionary popularity can impact you as soon as you realize the truth about social media connections and loneliness.

  1. Real human connection ceases to exist

Unfortunately, real human connection can cease to exist with the new online platforms promoting “connection between people.” We have to remember that as human beings, we have social needs and an urge to feel like we belong. Personal connections are therefore extremely important and a lack of them can be detrimental to our health. Having real connections can be hard to do when we are glued to our screens, which can play a crucial yet negative role in our mental health overall.

  1. Anxiety and depression rise

Last but not least, comparing ourselves to our friends can be damaging because it further activates the idea of not being enough. If you’re not enough, you’ll continue judging yourself in any way possible, which will program your brain to fail at whatever it is doing – at least, in the long run. If you are not enough, you cannot be successful because you’re never going to be enough to stand out; or at least, that’s what your perception will tell you. Thus, your anxiety will rise, and your depression will skyrocket. If you are not enough, you are afraid of failure, which actives the fight or flight brain mode. This will, in return, activate anxious and depressive emotions within you.

Conclusion

While social media can provide helpful means of communication and interaction with those who are dear to us, it can also form bad habits and addictions. These damaging routines can be hard to get rid of and can, thus, impact our health. Please stay aware of the do’s and don’ts of social media use to ensure that your mental health stays intact.

Real Bodies Exhibit Coming to the Science Center Explores COVID-19

0

(West Palm Beach, Fla.) – No bones about it! The South Florida Science Center is announcing the fall blockbuster exhibit, Real Bodies: The Exhibition presented by the Stiles-Nicholson Foundation. Opening September 28, 2020, the exhibit will be on display until April 11, 2021.

Appropriate for all ages, Real Bodies goes beyond skin deep to reveal the mysteries of human anatomy, exploring the body through physiology, culture and emotion. Visitors will tour real, preserved human bodies, digging deeper into what it means to be alive.

This powerful exhibition, produced by Imagine Exhibitions, Inc., displays 20 real, perfectly preserved human bodies and more than 200 anatomical specimens throughout 11 galleries. Each of the specimens featured in Real Bodies has been carefully and respectfully preserved by a team of experts using a scientific method known as polymer preservation, or plastination. This revolutionary process uses liquid silicon rubber to prevent the natural process of decaying.

The exhibition pushes boundaries while blending art, science and emotion. When visitors explore different systems of the body, they will see the deeper connection between breathing, hunger, heart rhythm, love, motion and thought that makes each person unique.

“We are thrilled to bring Real Bodies to Palm Beach County,” said Kate Arrizza, Science Center President and CEO. “We know our guests will love seeing the science beneath the skin and learning about human evolution through time. This is a rare opportunity to see the human body from the inside, which we hope will spark an interest in children to seek careers in science and medicine.”

The exhibition will also feature a new COVID-19 component, encouraging visitors to learn more about the pandemic’s impact on the human body. Designed by Imagine Exhibitions, Inc. in consultation with emergency medicine physicians and epidemiologists with experience in emerging infectious disease preparedness, this new content showcases the latest science-based information about the novel coronavirus.

To continue with the theme of the historical, cultural and emotional context of the human body, the exhibit addresses efforts related to treating COVID-19 as well as the effects of the pandemic on human health and the healthcare system, including the challenges workers are facing in treating and preventing the virus. Interesting facts about how it affects each of the different body systems—from respiration to digestion to circulation—and other related topics will be found throughout the exhibition. Social distancing floor decals will continue the education as will a short film that illustrates the journey of the virus inside the human body. Visitors will also experience a dramatic display of dozens of 3-D printed virus models as part of the exhibition.

“The human body is a magnificent machine capable of wonderful things, and the exhibition will showcase how amazing anatomy is,” said Kate Arrizza, President and CEO of the Science Center. “The new COVID-19 component is an excellent and timely resource that adds value to the educational impact.”

“I am excited to share with the public the amazing work that our team collaborated on to create and enhance the exhibition in an effort to answer everyday questions about COVID-19,” said CEO of Imagine Exhibitions Tom Zaller. “Our goal is to share with people the current findings about how this new virus affects the different systems of the body in an easy to digest form. The hope is that we all come out of the exhibition knowing a little more than when we went in.”

Real Bodies is presented by the Stiles-Nicholson Foundation and sponsored by Lew and Kathleen Crampton, Comcast, Cultural Council for Palm Beach County, Discover The Palm Beaches, Frances and Jeffrey Fisher, Gast Construction Group, Matthew and Helene Lorentzen, Northern Trust, Outfront Media, South Florida Science Center’s Board of Trustees, Christine and Robert Stiller and Tobacco Free Florida.

The mission of the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is to “open every mind to science” and the indoor/outdoor venue features more than 100 hands-on educational exhibits, a 10,000 gallon fresh and salt water aquarium, digital planetarium, Pre-K focused “Discovery Center,” 18-hole conservation-themed Mini Golf Course and quarter mile long outdoor science trail. The newest addition includes a $2.5 million permanent exhibit, “Journey Through the Human Brain” and features the most advanced neuroscience research and technology in the world. Safety guidelines like social distancing and mask wearing are enforced.

Admission to the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium during Real Bodies is $17.95 for adults, $13.95 for children ages 3 to 12 and $15.95 for seniors aged 60 and older. Science Center members and children under 3 are free.
