Casey Cares Foundation Brings Community Together (Virtually) To Symbolize Support for Critically Ill Children

While we still cannot gather in person, Casey Cares Foundation knows how much togetherness means to critically ill children. To bring a sense of community to those in need, the organization has created a Cinco de Mayo virtual walk for a little fun, a little exercise and the chance to help the critically ill children who need us most.

The virtual event will take place on Tuesday, May 5th and can be done at any time and location convenient to participants. Participants are encouraged to register for the Casey Cares Cinco de Mayo 5K each participant will receive a festive race shirt, finishers medal and race bib! Registrations can be made by visiting

https://www.caseycares.org/events/cinco-de-mayo-virtual-5k.

“For every registration we will be able to provide one family with a movie and pizza night to create memories, some possibly the last memory for their family, that last a lifetime,” shared Casey Baynes, founder of Casey Cares Foundation.

Baynes created the foundation twenty years ago with the mission to bring smiles to critically ill children and their families. From leukemia and brain tumors to sickle cell disease or organ failure, the treatment of these illnesses has far-reaching impacts, not just on the child, but on the entire family. Casey Cares provides families support for their well-being via psychosocial palliative care.

“The most vulnerable children and their families rely on our programs, now more than ever,” continued Baynes. “Our typical programs include tickets to baseball games, the circus, amusement parks, mini-vacations, birthday gifts, assistance with grocery bills, and so much more. Obviously, most of these programs have come to a standstill amid this pandemic. What has increased exponentially are the requests from our families for support to ease the toll of prolonged isolation as well as financial support for food and grocery bills. We need the community’s support to help our most vulnerable and ill.”

Each registration will provide a care package for a Casey Cares family which includes a gift card for groceries, a meal delivery, and movie rental or video streaming service. The package will also include snacks, pajamas for the children and small toys.

Participants are asked to tag @CaseyCares to share their pictures from walk day and tag their finish line photo with #irunbecauseCaseyCares. To learn more about ways you can donate or participate in this event, or to receive services, please visit caseycares.org or call (954) 821-0191.

About Casey Cares Foundation: Casey Cares knows how difficult life can be for families with critically ill children. We focus on the entire family, not simply the sick child. We help keep families’ spirits high by arranging bi-monthly programming – whether it’s a movie night and a fresh pair of pajamas or the chance to attend a major sporting event. Founded 20 years ago, Casey Cares makes life a lot better for families in eight states including Florida and D.C. Rather than once-a-lifetime or once-a-year, we believe the best palliative care comes from continuous, ongoing support. Learn more at caseycares.org.

Essential business appreciation offer available at Tire Kingdom and NTB locations:

  • 20% off Service

Our friends, our neighbors, possibly some of us, have had hours and income cut. Some have been laid off and some have lost their health insurance. All are at a greater risk due to compromised immune systems.  Ensuring we continue to provide life-saving services throughout the state is my priority and my mission.”

Wellington Thanks Frontline Heroes Through Creative Community Project

Wellington Frontline Heroes Thank You Project

Wellington is working with Schaefer Drugs, the Neil S. Hirsch Boys & Girls Club, and local schools to deliver Thank You cards to healthcare heroes at Wellington Regional Medical Center and Palms West Hospital.

Throughout the week of April 20th, the Village will hold a friendly competition between local elementary and middle schools to see who creates the most Thank You cards. The schools with the most submissions will be treated to an Ice Cream Social once school returns and social distancing orders have been lifted.

Wellington’s Community Services Department staff will also encourage young residents to participate in this community gratitude project by providing construction paper, crayons, and pencils to children at the Wellington Boys & Girls Club.

At the end of the week, Wellington’s Council will join Schaefer Drugs to deliver the cards to Wellington’s two area hospitals. The goal is to flood both hospitals with gratitude and words of encouragement.

Village residents who wish to join in this gratitude project may mail their thank you cards to Village Hall (12300 Forest Hill Blvd., Wellington Fl, 33414) or drop them off at the designated drop-box outside of the building, now through April 24th, 2020.

Residents may stay informed on the latest news and updates from the Village, by signing up for Emergency Alerts at wellingtonfl.gov/Alerts and following Wellington’s Social Media Pages.

The Village has created a Coronavirus webpage that contains preparedness information that will be updated regularly.

Barcello & Limoncello Join the Supper Club

Both venues create a special one-night menu for curbside delivery

NORTH PALM BEACH, FL — (April 14, 2020) — As many restaurateurs in South Florida continue adjusting to the new normal of doing business curbside, brothers Robert and Victor Ghini, owners of Barcello and Limoncello, continue to be proactive.

This month the brothers are participating in the Supper Club, a local group that came together to help local restaurants during these uncertain times. Run by blogger Cristyle Egitto, founder of Eat Palm Beach, the Supper Club gets local restaurants in the North Palm Beach area to create a special menu for one night.

The Supper Club’s Facebook members (2500 and growing) can find the featured restaurants on the group’s Facebook page and can place orders 24 to 48 hours prior to the featured restaurant’s assigned night via phone or online. All sales go directly to the featured restaurant.

“I started Eat Palm Beach seven years ago. The local food community has become a second family to me,” said Egitto. “I saw the huge impact COVID-19 has had on the industry and felt compelled to help keep restaurants open and employees employed.” Egitto just launched the Supper Club earlier in April and thus far, has had many area restaurants join in.

Barcello will be featured on Friday, April 17. The restaurant’s “Socially Distanced Supper Club Menu” offers appetizers [Caesar Salad, Crispy Cauliflower and Roasted Brussels sprouts] along with main course selections of Veal Flank Steak, Haddock with Horseradish Crust, Chicken with Smoked Gouda and Bacon, and Rigatoni with Vegetables. Dessert options include Coconut Tres Leches Cake and Peanut Butter Cheesecake.

Limoncello will be featured on Tuesday, April 21. The special menu will include a selection of antipasti: Rollatini di Melanzane [eggplant stuffed with ricotta and fresh basil and marinara sauce), Polpette (meatballs, chef style) and Vongole Posillipo (clams with garlic, white wine and a touch of tomato). Main course options include Scaloppine di Vitello, Salmone Grigliato, Pollo Lombardia,  Vitello Parmigiana or Pollo Parmigiana. The menu also offers two salads: Insalata di Cesare and Insalata Limoncello, mixed baby greens with walnuts, gorgonzola, heirloom cherry tomato and a lemon vinaigrette. Dessert options include tiramisu and cheesecake.

Both Barcello and Limoncello offer a wine selection and will introduce their new Cocktails to Go program. Each 12-ounce bottle serves two. Barcello is offering its Hibiscus Margherita and Manhattan and Limoncello is offering its 561 Manhattan and Limoncello Martini for the Supper Club.

“We are grateful to the community, from our customers who continue to order curbside service, to people like Cristyle, who are jumping in to help restaurateurs in any way they can. We will get through this and are grateful to those who continue to support Barcello and Limoncello,” said Robert Ghini, co-owner of Barcello and Limonello.

To learn more or to view the menus, go to The Socially Distanced Supper Club on Facebook.

To place an order for pickup on April 21 from Barcello, call 561.660.8222. To place an order for pickup on April 21 from Limoncello, call 561.622.720.

April, 2020 – Six Feet Apart

April, 2020 – 6 Feet Apart

By Krista Martinelli, Editor

Travel Planning after COVID-19 on Travel with TErri for Around Wellington
One World Trade

Hope everyone is staying safe and staying six feet apart.  It’s a different world now that we’ve been quarantining for a month.  Everyone is recommended to wear masks when we go out.  It can be very isolating, especially for those who live alone.  But we still want to bring you some good news and some food for thought this month, in the midst of the pandemic.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Victoria Jolson, former Rockette and award-winning singer.  She was originally married to Al Jolson’s son and went on later to have a relationship with comic Red Buttons.  Read her story in this month’s “AW Spotlight” story.

I’m happy to introduce you to a new writer this month, Joyce Gropper who is the owner of My Animal Palace in Wellington.  She is taking turns with Cristina Anzures, owner of Anzer Animal Hospital, and writing “Paws-itive Press” for us.  Read her tips for keeping your pet safe this summer.

In “Cultural Corner,” Denise Marsh interviews the members of one of my favorite local bands,  Americana Jones. While their gigs are cancelled for the moment due to COVID-19, there’s a video that shows off some of their songs inside the story.

If you need a little diversion from the harsh reality of self-quarantining, read “Cat Talk” by Jon Frangipane. In “Hairballs,” he goes off on a tangent with his neurotic cat Berkel and dips into Berkel’s “crass form of jocularity.”

In “Living Green” this month, Bryan Hayes writes about Environmental Protection during Precarious Times. The need for clean air and clean water is always essential, but especially needed now.

Our terrific “Teen Talk” writer is always thinking outside the box.  In this month’s article, Summer Wadleigh explores the affects of COVID-19 on xenophobia and the experiences of Asian Americans right now.

I was worried about our travel writer, Terri Marshall, who tested positive for COVID-19 a couple weeks ago and is living in NYC.  Thank goodness, she has recovered and did not have a fever that reached high enough to require her to go to a hospital (105 degrees and above).  I learned a lot about the symptoms and the painstaking precautions she had to take in dividing up a one-bedroom apartment with her husband, who works for the NY subway system.  Anyway, she is back to normal!  And she writes on a particularly apropos topic, “Dream Today, Travel Tomorrow.”

And that is just the beginning as there are many other articles to explore this month.  And Terri is right – all we can do right now is make plans for tomorrow and be safe today.  So stay safe, my friends!  And if possible, support local businesses.  Here’s a list of Delivery & Take Out options for the Wellington area, compiled by the Village of Wellington. https://www.wellingtonfl.gov/768/Delivery-Take-Out-Options?fbclid=IwAR0gPlRiMwwtCN16u9LIc5AbkY8huyiy59UVSwwBbKiZpAXqmLI1vwZXjfI

Casey Cares Foundation Inviting Families to Join Them For

National Wear Pajamas To Work Day

South Florida – Looking for a fun way to give back while you are quarantined? Casey Cares Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating memorable experiences for critically ill children, invites families to participate in their pajama party on April 16th.

“We know that families are homebound during this time,” shared Casey Baynes, founder of the organization. “For Casey Cares families, this is life for them on a regular basis. Our organization works to make life just a little bit better for them and to break up the monotony of hospital stays and doctor visits. We all know how good a new pair of pjs feels and we are excited to see everyone wearing theirs!”

Community members are invited to take pictures of their families wearing pajamas and post them to Facebook on April 16th and tag @CaseyCares using the hashtag #CaseyCaresBiggestPJParty.

Those who can, are invited to also make a $40 donation to Casey Cares to provide a movie and pizza night to the family of a critically-ill child in need.

Added Baynes, “for so many of our families, these nights provide a reprieve and create lasting memories, even a final memory for some. It is such as easy way to make a huge impact.”

To learn more about ways you can participate, receive, or donate, please visit caseycares.org or call (954) 821-0191.
