Call of Africa’s Native Visions Galleries Opens in Palm Beach Gardens

Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. – The new year 2020 is going to be wild! Call of Africa’s Native Visions Galleries is now open in PGA Commons. It’s an artistic adventure of wildlife and nature.

The Palm Beach Gardens gallery is the newest location for owners Kirsten and Ross Parker. They also operate a gallery in Naples, Florida. Parker, who is originally from Zimbabwe, has had a lifelong passion for the art of his homeland. His interest in conservation inspires him to exhibit environmentally themed artwork by artists from southern Africa, as well as from around the world.

“Along with helping to build the collections of wildlife art enthusiasts around the world, I have been a part of building the careers of emerging artists,” said Parker. “When you can look at a sculpture or painting and can sense the movement and intensity of the depicted moment, you know you are in the presence of a great artist. That is the kind of lifelike work you will find in our galleries.”

Native Visions Galleries will host a grand opening celebration on Friday, February 21 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Guests will enjoy South African wines and hors d’oeuvres, and meet world-renowned wildlife sculptor Mopho Gonde. A native of Zimbabwe, Gonde creates carvings of Africa’s wild animals from leadwood – a hard, almost rock-like wood. Gonde will share his inspiration and techniques that bring animals to life from fallen trees. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Artisan Program at The Arc of Palm Beach County.

In March, Native Visions Galleries will host the exhibit “From Africa to the Everglades,” featuring the works of David Langmead and John Seerey Lester. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida. The exhibit runs from March 12 through April 14, 2020.

One of the most successful family theater tours in history, in Peppa Pig’s Adventure!, Peppa Pig gets ready to go on an exciting camping trip to the woods with George and her school friends, including Pedro Pony, Suzy Sheep and Gerald Giraffe. Exploring Fairbanks: It’s Worth the Layers

“I hear there’s a polar vortex hitting the lower 48 this week. You know what we call that here in Alaska? Tuesday.” I heard this more than once from the residents of Fairbanks, Alaska. With winter temperatures dipping as low as minus 40 or more, these hearty souls know a thing or two about cold weather. And while bundling up in the layers necessary to combat those frigid numbers seems cumbersome, it is absolutely worth the effort.

Snowy Banks of the Chena River in Fairbanks

One of the last real frontier towns in the country, Fairbanks offers a unique travel experience in any season, but winter brings a sense of wonder with a snowy landscape, reindeer, ice carvings and, if you’re lucky, the spectacular aurora borealis. Last winter, I layered up and headed north to check it all out. Here are just a few of my favorite experiences.

Breakfast of Champions at The Cookie Jar!

Breakfast at The Cookie Jar

The folks at The Cookie Jar in Fairbanks say, “You can eat at a chain, or you can eat with family.” I don’t know about you, but I choose family—you can get a McDonald’s bacon, egg & cheese biscuit anywhere. What started as a micro-bakery featuring fresh baked cookies, muffins and cinnamon rolls has morphed into a family-owned and operated tasty treasure serving three meals a day. The extensive breakfast menu guarantees a good start to your day whether your style leans savory or sweet.

Discovering Alaska’s Unique History & Lifestyle

Fairbanks began as a mining town after gold was discovered by an Italian miner, Felix Pedro. One hundred years later, this boomtown still serves as a gateway to the Arctic. But the history of Alaska’s interior stretches back thousands of years. Discover the stories of the Native Alaskans, learn about their cultural history, languages and lifestyles at the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center downtown.

Also, at the University of Alaska Museum of the North, you’ll find exhibits highlighting the intrepid souls who settled in Alaska’s interior. Other highlights include a 36,000-year-old mummified bison in the Gallery of Alaska. Now that’s something you don’t see every day! Don’t miss the extensive art collection displayed in the Rose Berry Alaska Art Gallery.

Buttercup at Running Reindeer Ranch in Fairbanks on Travel with Terri
Buttercup!

Hiking with Reindeer

I’ve hiked a fair amount in my life but hiking with reindeer was an entirely new thrilling—and yes, somewhat terrifying—experience. The reindeer herd at The Running Reindeer Ranch isn’t responsible for transporting Santa around the world which means they have more time to hike with lucky guests. We set off in the snowy boreal forest with the herd—well most of the herd. Rocket was taking a time out for bad antler behavior. Spending time with these magnificent creatures and getting to know their personalities was truly an unforgettable wildlife encounter.

Borealis Basecamp in FAirbanks Alaska
Borealis Base Camp

Sleeping Under the Alaskan Sky

Fairbanks sits in the auroral oval, a ring-shaped area around the North Pole, making it one of the best places in the world to see the Northern lights. They’re often visible from August to May, becoming more intense between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. While there are many places to experience the Northern Lights in the Fairbanks area, one of the most intriguing is the Borealis Base Camp.

Situated on 100 acres in the snowy boreal forest just 25 miles outside of town, Borealis Basecamp feels as if it’s on another planet…or maybe the moon. Guests stay in geodesic domes with expansive clear ceilings that provide unobstructed views of the night sky and, if you’re lucky, the aurora borealis. Spending a night at Borealis Base Camp offers a win-win scenario: catch nature’s stunning light show from your warm cozy bed. Although this lunar-like landscape remains off the grid, that doesn’t stop the chef from whipping up delicious cuisine. Served in a stunning yurt with floor to ceiling windows, our three-course meal included the choice of flat iron steak, Alaska sockeye salmon or Alaskan king crab. Pretty impressive!

From nature’s grandeur to talented local artists to a thriving food and beverage scene, Fairbanks’ attractions are vast and varied. Isn’t it time you bundled up and headed north?

Happy New Year, Happy New Decade

Happy New Year, Happy New Decade

January, 2020

I hope your first few days of 2020 have been wonderful!  This month we celebrate the new year with a fun interview with an author.  Read “Cultural Corner” this month with “2020…as Unpredictable as Trading Sardines.”  See Lori Baumel’s interview with Linda Raschke.

I’m happy to say that Mayor Anne Gerwig will be serving as our mayor of Wellington for 4 more years!  Check out her January Mayor’s Column to see what’s going on in the Village of Wellington.  We thank Anne for coming to our last mixer.

Speaking of mixers, we hold a networking mixer that’s free and open to the public the first Thursday of each month at Village Music & Café at 6:30pm.  So the next one is Feb. 6th, 2020.  And we will be celebrating AroundWellington’s 14th anniversary in business!  Come for the cake and the connections.  Stay for the jazz, which always follows our mixers, by the Wellington Jazz Cats.

We have a new humor writer who’s been entertaining us with his tall tales of his talking cat Berkel.  Check out Jon Frangipane’s “Cat Talk” this month.

And Melanie Lewis dedicates this month’s “Mommy Moments” to grandmothers.  We had the fun of having my mother in town to visit us for the holidays.  There’s nothing like a grandmother’s connection with her grandchildren!

Writer Mike May has been on the move again.  He takes us to a scrumptious sounding restaurant in Seattle – Duke’s Seafood.  Check out “On the Move with Mike.”

In other delicious news, the Sweethearts take us to a bakery in London this month. They devour a few pastries at the Dominique Ansel Bakery over tea. See Frannie and Dani in action in their video.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, as there are many other stories to explore.  Just go to AroundWellington.com and click around to see what’s new.

Wishing you a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year and New Decade!  Thanks for being a part of AroundWellington.
