Copies have also been sent to libraries, government agencies, churches, schools and civic organizations.

League of Women Voters of PB County to

Coordinate NATIONAL VOTER REGISTRATION DAY

At 23 High Schools in Palm Beach County on

Tuesday, September 25

(West Palm Beach, FL – September 18, 2018) The League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County (LWVPBC) in conjunction with the School District of Palm Beach County is coordinating a voter registration effort at 23 local high schools on National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, September 25.

The day will kick-off at 8:30 am with a special breakfast at the School District’s headquarters, 3300 Forest Hill Boulevard in West Palm Beach. More than 200 volunteers are participating in this voter registration campaign that will happen over the lunch hour in public schools from Boca to Jupiter.

“Our aim is to motivate young people to take the first step toward participating in the democratic process by registering to vote,” says Pam Maldonado, chairperson of the Voting Service Committee for the League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County. “After the close of registration on October 9, the League will concentrate on educating citizens about their three options for voting: by mail, early voting, and on Election Day.”

National Voter Registration Day is a single day of coordinated media and field efforts to raise awareness of voter registration opportunities and register as many eligible voters as possible. As a nonpartisan day of action, this effort is endorsed by the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED) and the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS).

First observed in 2012 to celebrate American democracy, National Voter Registration Day wants to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to vote so volunteers and organization from all over the country will “hit the streets” in a single day of coordinated field, technology and media efforts to reach tens of thousands of potential voters who may not currently be registered.

In addition to the League of Women Voters, national premier partners include the Alliance for Young Organizing, BET, Creative Artists Agency, Carnegie Corporation, Democracy Fund, Democracy Works, Facebook, Fair Elections Center, Google, My Familia Vota, MTV, Military Officers Association of America, National Urban League, Reddit, RISE, Rock the Vote, United Way Worlwide,Vote.org, Voto Latina, WeWork, YWCA and numerous other organizations.

A few days after National Voter Registration Day, LWVPBC will release its 2018 Voters’ Guide. For more information, please visit www.Vote411.org.

Elliot Bostwick Davis Named New Director and CEO of Norton Museum of Art as it Prepares to Open Foster + Partners-designed Expansion in February 2019

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (Sept. 17, 2018) –The Board of Trustees of the Norton Museum of Art announced today that nationally recognized art historian and curator Elliot Bostwick Davis has been appointed Director and CEO to succeed Hope Alswang, who is retiring on March 1, 2019 after leading the institution for nine years. Davis comes to the Norton from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), where for the past 18 years she has spearheaded all aspects of one of the world’s premier collections of the art of the Americas. She will assume the directorship on March 2, 2019.

Davis joins the Norton at a moment of singular transformation for the institution that includes a 59,000 square-foot expansion and new sculpture garden designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster of Foster + Partners. The breathtaking new wing and expanded museum, opening to the public on February 9, 2019, offers new galleries, classrooms, state-of-the-art auditorium, and other amenities. The expansion allows Davis to broaden the Museum’s multiple missions of serving as an inspiring and engaging cultural resource for the region, and an incubator for groundbreaking and meaningful exhibitions, scholarship, and programs.

“It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of Elliot Davis, an outstanding museum leader, as the new Director and CEO of the Norton Museum of Art,” said Harry Howell, Chairman of the Norton Museum of Art’s Board of Trustees. “Widely respected as a scholar and curator, Elliot is also an innovator in making the art of the Americas a more inclusive field and making museums more active and engaged in their communities. As our institution begins to grow into its new wing, we know that Elliot will create a vision for the Norton that meets our aspirations of being one of the nation’s leading art museums.”

“It is an honor to become the next Director of the Norton Museum of Art at this time of historic transformation,” Davis said. “I look forward to working with all members of the Norton community–Trustees, staff, friends, and members—as we strive to broaden the role of the art museum in contemporary culture. I view the Norton as a place of inspiration, creativity and excellence, and one that will nurture even greater connections to audiences of all ages and walks of life, both in Palm Beach County and beyond.”

Since 2000, Davis has led the MFA’s Art of the Americas department as the John Moors Cabot Chair, charged with responsibility for one of the world’s preeminent collections of paintings, decorative arts and sculpture from North, Central, and South America. The Art of the Americas collection of more than 16,000 objects spans three millennia, from 900 BCE to the late 20th century. During her tenure, Davis created a new and innovative paradigm for presenting American art in a global context and expanded the breadth of artistic representation from across the Americas with important acquisitions of art by women, African Americans, Native Americans, folk and outsider artists, as well as paintings and decorative arts from the Spanish Colonial period.

Committed to expanding the MFA’s engagement with new audiences, she directed and led two pilot programs. The first, funded by the Henry Luce Foundation, developed innovative methods of displaying art from the permanent collection. The second created traveling exhibitions for culturally underserved and rural communities throughout the Northeast, as part of the Art Bridges-Terra program.

Davis led the curatorial team that created the critically acclaimed installation of the Art of the Americas Wing (also designed by Foster + Partners, with whom Davis collaborated on the wing’s design) which opened in November 2010 displaying nearly 5,000 objects on view in 53 galleries, representing one-third of the MFA’s gallery space. She also played an active role in the MFA’s capital campaigns.

At the MFA, she has authored 20 publications and curated 15 exhibitions, including Mark Rothko: Reflection (2017); Making Modern (2016); Jamie Wyeth (2014); Loïs Mailou Jones (2013); Edward Hopper (2007), and Things I Love: The Collections of William I. Koch (2005).

Before joining the MFA, Davis was responsible for American, British, and contemporary art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in its Department of Drawings and Prints. She has served on the boards of the Association of Art Museum Curators, Mona Bismarck American Center, Mass Humanities, Groton School, Shelburne Museum, the New York Academy of Art, and the American Antiquarian Society.

Davis received her Ph.D., M.A., and M. Phil in art history and archaeology from Columbia University. She also earned an M.A. in liberal studies from New York University, and her A.B. cum laude in art history and archaeology from Princeton University.

About the Norton Museum of Art

Founded in 1941, the Norton Museum of Art is recognized for its distinguished holdings in American, European, and Chinese art, and a continually expanding presence for photography and contemporary art. Its masterpieces of 19th century and 20th century European painting and sculpture include works by Brancusi, Gauguin, Matisse, and Picasso, and American works by Stuart Davis, Hopper, O’Keeffe, Pollock, and Sheeler.

On February 9, 2019, the Norton will open a visionary expansion designed by architecture firm Foster + Partners, under the direction of Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster. The project includes a new 42,000-square-foot West Wing that doubles education space and increases gallery space for the Norton’s renowned collection. The transformation of the Museum’s 6.3-acre campus, which reorients the Norton’s entrance to the main thoroughfare of South Dixie Highway, restoring the symmetry of the museum’s original 1941 design, will also create a museum in a garden, featuring new, verdant spaces and a sculpture garden.

The Norton presents special exhibitions, lectures, tours, and programs for adults and children throughout the year. In 2011, the Norton launched RAW (Recognition of Art by Women), featuring the work of a living female painter or sculptor and funded by the Leonard and Sophie Davis Fund / ML Dauray Arts Initiative. In 2012, the Norton established the biennial, international Rudin Prize for Emerging Photographers in partnership with Beth Rudin DeWoody, named in honor of her late father, Lewis Rudin.

October 15 at 7 pm (Monday)

BOB WOODWARD

The State of the American Presidency

Everywhere legendary journalist Bob Woodward goes, he says people ask to know what’s really going on in Washington. Their questions fall into four categories:

1) The presidency: How is President Trump doing and surviving? How does Trump compare with the eight presidents – Nixon to Obama – that Woodward has reported on for The Washington Post and in his bestselling books?

2) The investigation of special counsel Robert Mueller: is it like Watergate or will it fade away like Reagan’s Iran-Contra scandal?

3) Conflict: What is the likelihood of a new war? What are the goals with North Korea, in the Middle East, with the Islamic state, and on terrorism? Will there likely be a major escalation in one of the current conflicts?

4) The economy: Is the American/global economy sound or are we headed for trouble? How is Trump’s America First agenda playing out with our allies and enemies around the globe?

In Woodward’s speeches, the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning associate editor of the Post offers some well-reported answers to these questions that audiences won’t learn from any other source. As he reported on previous presidents, for 46 years Woodward has immersed himself in their decision-making, scandals, wars, and economic policy like no other reporter. He leveraged a rich network of sources – applying his signature aggressive but fair and non-partisan reporting method for his book on President Trump, his administration, and its many controversies. As with his 19 bestselling books – 13 of which have been No. One (including his most recent book, FEAR: Trump in the White House) – Woodward provides a behind-the-scenes examination of what’s really going on and what it means.

In 2014, Robert Gates, former director of the CIA and secretary of defense, said of Woodward, “He has an extraordinary ability to get otherwise responsible adults to spill [their] guts to him.” That is Woodward’s true gift and audiences at his speeches leave transfixed by what they’ve learned.

Tickets start at $39.50 plus fees/taxes

About Bob Woodward:

Former CIA director and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates wished he’d recruited Woodward into the CIA, “His ability to get people to talk about stuff they shouldn’t be talking about is just extraordinary and may be unique.”

Therein lies the genius of Bob Woodward – a journalistic icon who gained international attention when he and Carl Bernstein broke the deeply disturbing news of the Watergate scandal. The book they wrote – All the President’s Men – won a Pulitzer Prize.

Watergate’s theme of secret government is a common thread throughout Woodward’s career that has spawned 19 books – all national bestsellers – 13 of them Number One – more than any other contemporary nonfiction author.  His 19th book, FEAR: Trump in the White House, was published on September 11, 2018.

In the process Woodward became the ultimate inside man.  No one else in political investigative journalism has the clout, respect, and reputation of Woodward.  He has a way of getting insiders to open up – both on the record and off the record – in ways that reveal an intimate yet sweeping portrayal of Washington and the budget wrangling, political infighting, how we fight wars, the price of politics, how presidents lead, the homeland security efforts, and so much more.  His work is meticulous and draws on internal memos, classified documents, meeting notes and hundreds of hours of interviews with most of the key players, including the president.

The Weekly Standard called Woodward “the best pure reporter of his generation, perhaps ever.” In 2003, Al Hunt of The Wall Street Journal called Woodward “the most celebrated journalist of our age.”  In listing the all-time 100 best non-fiction books, Time magazine has called All the President’s Men, by Bernstein and Woodward, “Perhaps the most influential piece of journalism in history.”
